Chapter 14 [Strange's Sanctum]
Strange reappeared in his sanctum. Questions peppered his mind over the current situation. He knew of the timestream's fragile nature. May Oshtur the All Seeing grant peace for us all now. He trusted that Peter would've seen Osborn back to the brownstone. Furthermore, without the envelope or its contents, Jameson would never find out about Spider-Man's secret. He'd never bring the police into the matter either.
Tea still steamed to draw him in.
He smiled. "The benefits of time travel." He observed the cup remained the same temperature. The liquid refreshed Thirst's parch.
"Stephen?" Clea knocked at his ajar door. "I have the most odd feeling. May I come in?"
"Always." He smiled. "I had a most urgent errand elsewhere." He took another mouthful from the wooden cup. "How is our guest?"
She raised an eyebrow. "Guest?" She glanced out into the hall. Then she turned back to him. "I do not understand. Wong, you and I have been here all evening. There's been no one else. Were you expecting one of our friends?"
He shook his head. "Forgive me. Yes. I was thinking that Val would be joining us again."
Her face lit up. "She is always very pleasant. I would like that." She rubbed his shoulder. "You're so tense. Now I know something is the matter. Perhaps you should rest?"
He sucked in a deep breath. "Yes. Sleep would be a most comforting thought. You always seem to know what's best for me."
"I love you, Stephen. Never forget that." Her lips brushed across his cheek. "Good night."
"Good night, my Love." He watched her step out of the chamber and close the doors behind herself. "Although I sense there are other things to be done."
What other things, Dr. Strange? You have done enough!
Strange stiffened. "You are speaking to me here?"
I can reach your mind anywhere, Mortal, the Living Tribunal pressed. You are quite fortunate. I do not tolerate interference with the balance. By luck, you found the proper point to prevent the tragedy. I am forced to compliment you in this regard. Remember only you will have knowledge of this night's events. Talk to others about them at your peril. But one day your luck will run out. If it does where the balance is concerned, you will not like the result. That is my warning to you. Remember I still hold your promise.
With that, the voice went silent.
The balance has been maintained. Events are back to where they should be. Strange glanced out the window. He took in the few passersby at that hour. Dawn and the early morning traffic remained a few hours away. May you be happy in all things, Peter. Until our next meeting may Gwendolyn, your aunt and you be well. He walked out of the sanctum toward his waiting chamber and a well-earned rest at that...
