"Have any of you seen our new attending?" Jessica asked as her and Lauren crowded the nursing station.

I raised my head up from my charting. "Are we getting a new attending?" I asked.

"Oh Bella, you're always so late to the party. Yes, we are getting an ER Doctor. I heard that he had an interview last week." She twirled her hair around her finger absentmindedly.

"How do you know it's a he? You haven't even seen him. Also, I wouldn't say we are getting an attending if he's only in the ER." I shook my head before refocusing my attention on the charts.

"What are y'all talking about?" Alice bounced up to the nursing station and handed me another patient's file. Alice is not only my best friend but also happens to be my roommate.

"The bobble head twins think that another doctor is starting soon." I used my pen to gesture between Jessica and Lauren.

Alice had a thoughtful look on her face. "How fun. It would be nice to change things up around here. I wonder what kind of doctor he is." She tapped her finger against her chin before shrugging.

I can understand where she was coming from. There wasn't much change in our tiny hospital. We were so small that we could only provide certain medical services. Our main features were a small ER, a labor unit, and 3 OR rooms. There were a few other mentionables here and there, but overall we were small.

Our hospital was only a few steps above a private practice in size. Our strongest features did include the labor until and the ER, not only because they brought in the most money but also set us higher in the hospital rankings. Many women have said that they prefer our hospital's birthing suites since they have more 'hands on care'…. But I might be a little biased.

Overall the size of our hospital didn't stop us from doing anything. Our much larger, sister hospital was only 45 minutes away. If anything, our staff had a better connection since we were constantly with one other.

"Not you too. Why does everyone assume that the doctor is male? Maybe we could be getting a kick ass lady doctor." I rolled my eyes and let out a brief sigh.

"I don't know. Gut feeling maybe." I knew I was being a little dramatic, but we already had plenty of male doctors.

Jessica looked at me as if I was disturbed. "Oh Bella. Wouldn't you rather it be a hot guy then some women." She can't be serious.

I turned my attention away from them. I really needed to focus on these charts if I wanted to leave at a reasonable time. I'm supposed to drive out to Forks for the weekend. My mother had called me earlier in the week and made it seem urgent although they were probably just readjusting their will. Again.

"Hey Bella, do you have any plans tonight? We can grab margarita mix on the way home." Alice looked extremely hopeful

"Sorry, I can't. I told you that I was going to Forks." She let out a small huff as she remembered my plans. "But you can come with me if you want. My parents would love to see you again."

"Thanks Bells but I can't. My cousin is coming into town tomorrow and my parents want to have a family reunion." She wrinkled her nose at the thought.

I stood up and filed the charts away so that we could go to lunch. As we started walking towards the cafeteria, I began questioning her.

"Your cousin? Do you mean Emmett? He doesn't live far from here." I looked at her with my eyebrows pulled together.

"No, not Emmett. Although it is Emmett's brother, Edward."

"I didn't know Emmett had a brother. Are you close to him?"

"No, not really. We were as kids, but Edward started drifting away from me when he entered high school. Said I was too 'young' to hang with him." She sounded a little bitter about the age comment. "Then when he graduated he moved far away for college and I haven't seen him since."

"Wow, that's kind of harsh. He didn't even visit for holidays?" A frown formed on her lips as she thought about it.

"He did in the beginning. Then he just stopped. I haven't seen him in ten years and haven't spoken to him in about four."

"Do you know why he is coming back now?"

"I'm not sure." She grabbed an apple off the fruit basket as we moved down the line towards the registers.

I had just cranked my car when my phone started ringing "Hello?" I answered as I pulled out of my parking spot.

"Bella, it's mom. I just want to make sure that you are still coming home tonight." My eyes rolled at her worry.

"Yes mom. I just left work and should see you in three and a half hours."

"Good. Good. I'll see you soon. Drive safe." She hung up on me before I could return my love.

It makes me a little worried that she is so adamant about me coming the weekend while refusing to tell me why….. she's not sick...is she?

I wish that Alice could have joined me on this trip. She has alway made Forks more interesting. I first met Alice when I moved to Seattle in order to attend college. We ended up not only being roommates our Freshman year, but we were also presuming a career in nursing. We roomed together for the rest of college and she quickly became my best friend. When we graduated, we found a cute apartment that was only ten minutes from the hospital that we both worked at.

I work in the labor and delivery unit, specialized as an OBGYN nurse, I also assist in delivering babies both through vaginal and cesarean. Alice, however, is an ER/trauma nurse. She originally chose it so that she could get closer to the cute paramedic, Jasper, but she quickly fell in love with the high pace chaos that our ER has. Her and Jasper are now going three years strong as we are just about to start our third year working for the hospital.

Only Alice, Mike Newton, and I are from our original nursing class. The rest of the students chose different hospitals when they graduated. Lauren and Angela were the class behind us. Angela is currently married to Ben Cheney, who works in pathology at our hospital. Jessica moved here a year and half ago and quickly made friends with Lauren, another nurse, and Tanya, a gynecologist, the three of them do nothing but gossip all day long. That and spread STIs around the hospital.

It was 9 o'clock by the time I pulled into my parents driveway. I quickly shut the engine off and grabbed my duffel. My mom wrapped me in a tight hug as soon as I walked through the door.

"Oh Bella, it's so good to see you!" I patted her arm that was wrapped around my shoulders. I was just here two weeks ago, but good to see you too.

"It's good to see you too. I miss y'all when I'm in Seattle. I'm gonna shower and go to bed. I'm extremely tired. I'll see you in the morning." I kissed her cheek and started to walk towards the stairs.

"Wait Bella. Your father and I would like to talk to you."

"I'm sure it can wait until the morning. Charlie is probably already asleep." I let out a small yawn.

"Actually, I don't think it should wait for the morning" She gestured her hand towards the couch.

I dropped my bag with a sigh and walked over to the couch. I plopped myself down and rested my head on my arm. Twelve hour shifts kill me. My eyes had drifted closed as my father walked into the room.

"Bella, I'm glad you're home." I willed my eyes to open as my father sat down in his recliner.

"Hey Dad. What's so important that it couldn't wait until the morning."

"I need to start off by asking you to listen to everything I'm about to say without interrupting me."

"Why would…" He held his hand up to stop me.

" I need you to hear me out before you say something. Okay?" I nodded my head for him to continue.

"When your grandfather was still alive he made a deal with a family friend. This family is still considered good friends of ours." I raised my eyebrow at him. Almost urging him to continue on with the story. "Although your grandpa has been dead for a while, this family friend has brought it to our attention that the deal was still in place."

He paused as he took in a shaky breath.

"Your grandfather promised your hand in marriage to the eldest son of this family. Your wedding is scheduled for next Saturday." The room went silent enough to hear a pen drop.

"HE WHAT?" I was pissed. The need for sleep completely left my body as I shot up and off the couch.

"Bella, I know this is unorthodox but the deal was made a long time ago. It ensures that both you and this boy receive your trust funds."

"You can' t think that I would be happy about this. You can't even expect for me to go along with this. Grandad is dead and arranged marriages aren't something that happens anymore. Also, who cares about a trust fund if it means that I'm being forced into this. How does money even relate to marriage?"

"Bells, legally they can still happen and they were more common when your grandfather made this deal. I also don't know all the details between the elderly, just that you both need to be married…. to each other to receive your funds. It might have something to do with a third party loner… but I'm not sure since I wasn't there."

'What If I refuse?" I raised an eyebrow at him.

"You can't refuse." A huge breath left my body and I sunken back into the couch.

...MMHW...

"Bella, please say something." It was my mother who spoke this time. Her voice was filled with worry.

"I'm not sure what you want me to say. Oh I'm fine and dandy! Oh thank you grandad, I can't wait to get married to a stranger." My voice began to rise. "OH MY, I just can't wait. What do you want me to say?" My eyes snapped to hers and I let out a large sigh. "Someone has made a deal involving my life without consulting me." I frowned at her.

"Maybe you should sleep on it. You could wake up in a better mood tomorrow and have a better outlook on this."

"Maybe I'll wake up and be sooo thankful that I'm being married away at the tender age of 25." I rolled my eyes before shoving my body off the couch. "Goodnight." I rushed up the stairs so that I could be alone with my thoughts.

This seemed crazy. It just felt so surreal that my parents would marry me off without even consulting me. How was I supposed to be ok with this? How long have they known?

I was eternally screaming. What was I supposed to tell Alice? "Hey thanks for being a great roommate, but I'm gonna have to break the lease. Why you ask, well you see, I'm getting married. Oh you don't know him. Hell, I don't even know him."

I was still frustrated when I got out of the shower. My head was spinning and I couldn't grasp that I was really in this situation.

I didn't wake up early as I usually do. Instead I laid in bed while wallowing in self pity. I woke up hoping yesterday was a nightmare. That thought was quickly crushed by the note my mother left on my nightstand.

Bella, you know I love you a tremendous amount.

I just want what's best for you and the family.

You might not be happy right now, but one day you might thank me.

I do everything out of love for you.

I think you should approach this with an open mind, it might be good for you.

Here is your future husband's number. (899)4465-xxxx

You should take this week to get to know him.

Either way, buck up buttercup cause you're getting married next week.

Love you, Mom

I groaned into my pillow. Is there truly no way to get out of this? What type of man is ok with marrying a random girl?

I grabbed my phone and straightened out the slightly crinkled note. I slowly typed his number into my phone before realizing that she never left a name. Weird. Did she not know his name, just marrying me to a complete stranger. Was she hiding something?

I'm not moving cities. I am staying close to my friends and family. -B

I typed out a short message before hitting send. If I was nice enough, I would have included some more details. Maybe even have included who I was and provided him with my name. Or did he know my name? Was I the only one who was left clueless?

You either have the wrong number or you must be Isabella.

He didn't sign his message which still leaves me clueless to who he is. He even used Isabella. Ew. Only my grandmother ever called me that. At least it answers my question that he knows who I am.

I'm happy where I'm at. -B

Ok. I will move to Seattle then, that's not a big issue. We will have our honeymoon in two months, plan accordingly while requesting time off work.

Why do you even want an arranged marriage? Is there something wrong with you? -B

I really bit the bullet and sent my top question without a second thought.

My family wanted this and it makes them happy. It also doesn't hurt my job to have a wife hanging from my arm. Why are YOU in this marriage?

I'm NOT going to become a trophy wife or whatever it is that you are wanting. I have a job which I like. I WILL continue to work. -B

I didn't choose to participate, I've not been given a choice. -B

He seemed completely arrogant with his replies. He wanted a wife to hang off his arm. Does that mean that he has a high class job? I am definitely not high class material.

That's fine.

My mother interrupted my messages by knocking on my door. "Bella, you need to get up. Kathrine will be here soon with some dresses to try on."

Katherine was the wedding planner who was in charge of getting everything in order by next Saturday. I sighed a little before rolling out of bed. I left my phone on the nightstand before begrudgingly traveling down stairs with my mother.
