I am back, and the reason for my absence from fanfiction is because i needed to get some things right between me and the Lord before I could continue writing, and the stories I write will no longer contain gender-bending or any of that rubbish, the series I will use in writing are ones that I definitely should not have read, but I believe God has allowed me my sin in their instance so that I could write on here about any misconceptions they might have caused to those who viewed them, and any adult-like content or inappropriate behaviors will be immediately addressed in story as improper and wrong. -Update 4/24/2020- I have a lots of stories going at the same time, and I am a bit of a fair weather writer, so updates will probably be sporadic at best, and so you know, some times I like the ideas of the source material in my stories, but not the implementation, DxD is a good example of this. The way both me and a friend described it was as a good looking train wreck. -Update 7/11/2020- Series Rambles (essentially where I as an author go over what I like about the series I use in my stories, and where I believe they fall short of being good or interesting stories) · High School DxD: 1. Good Points – The Sacred Gears are a rather obvious good point (I mean, humans and human hybrids getting a specific power that they could personalize through experience is a pretty big up). The magic systems and how they work. The reincarnation system. The various different races, their individual characteristics, and their interactions with each other are an interesting thing that I wish there had been more of. The political aspects of the different factions. The philosophical questions the series raised with just about every aspect of the show and books that didn’t have to do with Issei provide for interesting thought experiments that have kept me thinking off and on for a long time. This is also a universe that makes for a good crossover anime with a lot of potential to go in multiple different directions. 2. Problems – It should be fairly self-explanatory why this show has issues, but I will take a crack at it anyways, and I will save the big rant about the main problem for the end. A lot of the philosophical questions the series raises never get answered. Like, “What does it mean for a race that is supposed to be pure evil and a race that is supposed to be pure good acting exactly like humans and even making an alliance with one another?” Another good one is, “Was the creator of the angels truly God if he could die to multiple representations of Satan?” The series is mainly a poke in the eyeballs to any Christian (or any other religious “descendent” of Abraham). It equates them and Satanists as all being the same religion, just different facets of it. It is not by mistake that in the series the being considered to be God is dead. Essentially all other religions are valid because their gods are alive and powerful, but “Christianity” is essentially invalid and grasping to hold on to any semblance of life possible (devil reincarnation eventually adopted by the angels and fallen). The system that “God” used to govern things is in the hands of an incompetent but powerful angel. That same system was also flawed in the first place. It does a similar thing to Fate in that the gods are sustained by the faith of their believers, and it places the Almighty God on the same level as those other gods. There is more to this that I could get into, but this isn’t the rant I want to go on. The main problem though is the perversion in the series. The very thing that keeps the series going is the main problem with it. The main character never truly experiences any growth because about the only thing he has to him is his perversion. There is no nuance to his character. The relationship he has with the different girls of the series is literally only skin deep and is based off of their mutual inability to keep it in their pants. Many here in the west are constantly disparaging the so-called power of friendship, but that is honestly one of the greatest draws for me to anime like Fairy Tail. This series has moments that could have been awesome, but instead of Issei fighting for the sake of his friends or something noble. He gets power creeps (yes I used that on purpose) because of his perverse nature. The girls of the show are literally only there to fulfill the author’s and reader’s mutual desire for voluptuous female flesh to be able to possess it (again I used that on purpose). There is no real reason for them to like him, nor to even be his friend. The entire basis of their relationship as the story goes on is sexual in nature, and that is not conducive to any sort of relationship. 3. Use in my stories – In my stories I will be addressing the series faults and trying to look at the missed opportunities for philosophical discussion. I will be keeping some things the same, i.e. I will not be going hog-wild with the Sacred Gears, and I will be trying to keep them as true to the original as possible, while fleshing out their use in the setting or settings of my stories. · Ranma : 1. Good Points – The Jusenkyo curses provide for an excellent piece of world-building that can be deeply explored. The various Martial Arts are also hilarious, and the philosophy of Anything Goes specifically is the philosophy used by the best MMA fighters. The way magic behaves is unique and not at the same time. When looking at each piece of magic in the series, you get a real understanding of the humor that was part and parcel of the series. This series is also a good “example” of Murphy’s Law in action. The main character and his/her struggles are also very engaging, but… 2. Problems – The main character suffers from what could be looked at as a severe case of not actually being the main character. Some may scratch their head at this, but the one for whose sake the story was written was Akane and not Ranma. Despite not being the strongest of the martial artists, she is allowed to get away with what would kill normal folks. I went through the series, both manga and anime, and not once does she say “Sorry” and actually mean it. She is allowed to get away with abusing her Fiancé and blaming everything on him. I will not argue that Ranma helped his situation any, because he usually didn’t, but the situation was usually already beyond repairable before it was placed in his socially incompetent hands. The poor man is always blamed for everything, when usually he is just trying and failing at fixing the situation. Other’s actions usually have already broken the situation beyond repair (usually by the fat oaf called his father), and the responsibility to do something with it is usually placed within the hands of a boy who is confused and “enlightened” by the curse of gender swapping, whose only role-model for the formative years of his life was a lazy, dishonorable, and stupid excuse of a human being. Also, if you look at the “humorous” elements of the story without the goal of laughing at them, the series suddenly fits more into an abusive horror film than the “romantic comedy” genre. Not only that, but this series actually does an injustice to human beings by presenting gender as something that is fluid and can change depending on the weather (yes the pun was purposeful). Whether you like hearing it or not, there are fundamental biological differences between males and females. The transgender movement as a whole is closer to being a fad that people aren’t willing to look into the long-term ramifications of. Most likely, if the series was following a more scientific than a fantastical bent, then Ranma would at any given time be only a second from madness, considering the fact that it is demonstrated in the series that the change is complete and functional. Those who suffer from true “gender dysphoria” if that is even what it really is, they need help, not a knife cutting off their ability to grant life to another human being. Those who do not suffer from it and merely have different tastes than the majority that they are similar to should not be told that they might have a little boy or little girl in them that is trying to come out. I could continue down this vein of thought for a long time, but I will leave it at this. At some point probably almost everyone wonders what it is like on the other side of the fence, it is merely a natural part of our development not something that we should be risking our future for. 3. Use in my stories – The character I will use the most will most likely be Ranma, though I will be including others. I will be using Jusenkyo and exploring the implications of it. The other magic and martial arts elements will also be in use. Word of warning, if you like Akane, Genma, Soun, or Nodoka I am not the writer for you. · Fairy Tail: 1. Good Points – The Magic is a good point (and yes I will admit that occasionally the power scaling doesn’t make any sense, but there is a reason for it.) Like I mentioned before the “power of friendship” of this anime is one of its draws for me. So much of western media is all about bashing the “power of friendship” which when you look at it, it is almost exactly like the unconditional form of love that there really is no one word to describe it in the English Language. I also like how the majority of the villains are nuanced and humanized, with the exception of Acnalogia (but that is the point of his character). The possible best point though is that the main character of the series is the Fairy Tail guild and not any one specific person, though Natsu seems to get more of the awesome moments than any other guild member. 2. Problems – The biggest problem is that occasionally the author loses focus of the greater guild to focus on Natsu or Lucy, and with poor Lucy that usually comes in the form of fan service. 3. Use in my stories – I will be using a lot of Fairy Tail style characters or ideas in my stories, though maybe not those characters themselves. I especially like the concept used for slayer magic and will probably be using someone from the Fairy Tail world to spread that style of magic to other series. · Naruto: 1. Good Points – The original series has a good premise that hard work can eventually overcome natural talent. The magic system (chakra for those who wish to vehemently deny that it is magic) is interesting and carries a lot of potential because as it was originally conceived of, raw power was not a requirement in battle though it did help, but using ingenuity in a fight was a must. The concept of the Tailed Beasts was also an interesting one. 2. Problems – The power creep is possibly the biggest problem, though that only really starts coming into play in Shippuden. In the sequel series Naruto evolves from an interesting character into a Gary Stu, because the world bends over backwards to accommodate him becoming more powerful as quickly as possible. Another issue that was present was the fan service of female flesh, even fake in the case of Naruto. In the sequel series, the ninja cease being sneaky and become combat mages that are essentially forces of nature. 3. Use in my stories – I will not be going in the exact same route as Shippuden in any of my stories. I will be highlighting the original chakra system and combat style which focused more on technique and ingenuity than on who can let loose the biggest magic blast, and if someone is capable of letting loose big magic blasts I will be highlighting the reasons why and how. · Sailor Moon: 1. Good Points – The concept of people being tied to the magic of a celestial body and using its power as their own. 2. Problems – The main character Usagi quickly goes from interesting (read, cowardly, not very intelligent, and quick to cry) to a galactic level Mary Sue that only the evil people hate. Another big problem is that the magic system was poorly implemented in the manga and crystal where it is almost only Usagi who can actually dust the little and big bads alike. The final big problem is the fact that a short-skirted sailor suit is considered appropriate battle attire. A minor issue I have is with Haruka and Michiru, though it has more to do with how and why they are implemented than the fact that they are implemented at all. The other minor issue I have is that the most powerful one is connected to the smallest celestial body. The final minor issue I have is that the guardian of Earth is hurt by his planet connection when the rest of them have no real problems with theirs. (also cough-Crystal Tokyo-cough) 3. Use in my stories – I will mainly be using the concept of planet connection, and addressing the problems with the series. · Sword Art Online: 1. Good Points – The swords are an obvious good point to the series, and the system assist that is used in the original book is a good point. The entire concept of an alternate reality contained within a machine is also interesting to contemplate. (oh, and Yui) 2. Problems – Again, a problem I have is the fan service, though it is not nearly as bad as some series. The only thing I really find all that Gary-Stuish about Kirito is his ability to transcend the system for a couple of seconds at the end of the first arc, though that is apparently what Kayaba was looking for at the end, if not what he wanted to try and find in the first place. The only other real problem I have with the series is that almost every girl his own age or a little younger that Kirito stumbles into develops a bit of a crush on him, though the only one he goes anywhere substantial with is Asuna (I disagree with the degree of substantiality they obtained, though I understand that part of it was their thoughts that they might not survive into the real world). 3. Use in my stories – I will probably have Kirito usually as some form of Heroic Spirit, though he will be nowhere near as powerful as the likes of Arturia or Gilgamesh. · Legend of the Legendary Heroes: 1. Good Points – The Alpha Stigma and other kinds of magic eyes. The plotline is not overly confusing despite not shying away from politics and confusing issues. The characters are fun and interesting and you can actually get engaged with them despite them being in a fantastical setting. 2. Problems – There aren’t really any that I can think of off the top of my head other than that it seems like almost everyone older than twenty-five is a sad excuse of a human being that tries to manipulate others. 3. Use in my stories – For the moment anyways I will be sticking Ryner into odd situations. · Fate/Stay Night: 1. Good Points – It is hard to know where to start for the good points of the original series and its prequel Fate/Zero. So I will be summing it up with Magic System and the theme of heroic contrasts. 2. Problems – The problems I have are mainly with the writer of the Visual Novel being a pervert, and that the spinoff series Apocrypha suffers from a terminal case of “let us find out who can let loose the biggest magic blast and move fast enough that the audience can’t figure out that the animators can do jack at making a good fight scene.” Apocrypha also loses sight of the point of the original theme and that is no better demonstrated then the confusing motives of the boy who becomes the protagonist (who starts off wanting to help his fellow homunculi, then… *confused shrug*). 3. Use in my stories – Heroic Spirits and the Fate Magic System will be very prevalent in my stories. · Danny Phantom: 1. Good Points – The extra-dimensional version of ghosts, the cool powers they get, and the different ways they form. The “scientific” approach to ghosts and ghost hunting. The lack of uniformity in the ghost zone and its physics. The crossover compatibility because of the unique portal properties in the ghost zone. The concept of halfas. The characters that at least start out unique and flawed. 2. Problems – A big one is how the “main” author contradicts his own established canon. Occasional animation issues. The finale of the series really makes no sense. The characters occasionally fall flat, especially in the finale. 3. Use in my stories – For the most part I will just be throwing alternate versions of Danny at different problems or worlds. · Warframe: 1. Good Points – It is a fun game to play, and the lore is constantly being fleshed out. The Warfames and their abilities. Characters are decidedly not one dimensional. The Tenno and the way they can fight. The different factions with different goals. 2. Problems – The only problems I have with it has more to do with me wanting a complete story and this game the story is constantly being made. The fact that your equipment stops leveling up at 30. The combat A.I. for the enemies leaves a little bit to be desired on occasion. 3. Use in my stories – I will most likely be taking some Tenno and putting them in another franchise, or sticking someone from another franchise into the Warframe universe. · Star Wars: 1. Good Points – The history of the galaxy, the force, the Jedi and Sith. The delving into politics and philosophy. The fact that when it counts, love is what defeats evil and not power (cough-until the new trilogy-cough). The massive war and campaign aspect of the universe. 2. Problems – I will admit that the old legends material occasionally had its inconsistencies, but overall the authors tried to stay true to Lucas’ vision and their own fellow authors continuity. The newer trilogy however was all over the place and wildly inconsistent. Episode 7 – The main character is someone from a desert planet who believed the force was a myth and trades parts off of an old star destroyer for a bag or two of “food.” She suddenly is capable of fixing and flying the Falcon, and using force powers that took every other person in the history of Star Wars years of training to be able to even use a basic version of it. She is also able to beat a highly trained “Sith” at a lightsaber and force duel with minimal difficulty (oh wait, that got retconned in the novelization by her ripping the knowledge from Kylo-dumb-dumb’s head when he was mind tricking her). She trusts everyone she comes across unless they are overtly evil, despite being abandoned on a planet of sand at an early age and forced to fend for herself. The main plotline is a bad parody of a New Hope that uses plot points for some of the different endings of Return of the Jedi as a kicking off point. Seriously, some of the unused plots for Return of the Jedi included killing off Hans Solo or having him leave Leia, having Luke disappear or put on the Darth Vader helmet (subverted because of turning the kid of Leia and Han into a “Sith” like what was done in the legends material). The First Order is clearly a copy-cat Empire that is even more inefficient and stupid. The Republic does nothing while the invading force made from the remnants of the Empire turns a freaking planet into a super death star that uses the energy from its home star to fire its death laser (retconned in the novelization in a weird way that involves “dark energy”). The most interesting character in all the movies Finn, the defecting brainwashed child soldier, goes on to slaughter his former “brothers” with a smile on his face. Leia goes from a politician to the leading General of a space vigilante group because the Republic she fought to establish extensively demilitarized after the Empire was “defeated.” I could go on, but it narratively makes zero sense continuity wise. Episode 8 – Luke is just, not Luke (In fact I think that is what I will refer to him as). The man throws his father’s lightsaber (which no one turns on properly, and no one knows how Maas got it) over his shoulder. The man who saw good in flippin’ DARTH VADER almost assassinates his own NEPHEW because of a vision. Not-Luke’s training of Rey consists of him tickly her hand with a blade of grass, and at the end of the movie where he confronts Kylo, he doesn’t even do it in person even though he had a functioning X-Wing he could have taken there. Rey does very poor self-training (see Shadiversity on youtube), and kicks Luke’s butt after Force Skyping Kylo. She lifts a mountain’s worth of rocks in the exact right way. She kills the “Sith Troopers” with disappearing daggers. Ghost Yoda interacts with the Living World. The narrative tension is a result of a massive fleet of First Order ships slowly chasing a single ship that “doesn’t have enough fuel to go to hyperspace (this was one of the main WTF things for me considering Admiral Purple Hair “hyperspace rams” the First Order Fleet just fine which is basically part one of how the new canon destroys what hyperspace travel is). No one is willing to fight the First Order. They use BOMBERS in SPACE COMBAT. The massive First Order fleet only sends three ships against the slow battle cruiser they are chasing. The side characters go on an irrelevant side mission that seems to come straight out of a video game. Leia pulls a Mary Poppins. YODA claims that Rey needs no training. Again, I could go on. Episode 9 – PALPATINE is back and is suddenly a military dunce. Rey is flying while she trains, and it is implied she got a year of training (retconned in the comics where she is constantly on adventures and gets in maybe a week of training with Leia, and she magically has the books that Ghost Yoda set on fire,) because apparently holocrons don’t exist anymore. Hyperspace travel is further murdered by the “practice” known as skipping which the First Order TIE’s are somehow able to track and duplicate. The plot of the movie is essentially from a poorly written video game that uses a lot of McGuffins (in the words of Just Some Guy from Youtube, “He [Kylo] finds the thing that people need to use to get through the thing to get to the place to find Uncle Bad Touch [Palpatine].” Then Rey and friends need to find a dagger that needs to be translated so they can go to the place to find the thing that people use to get through the thing to get to the place to find Uncle Bad Touch.). Rey pulls force lightning out of her butt and Narutos the TIE that Kylo had his Way-finder on. She then steals another TIE that apparently has a third Way-finder on it. Ghost Luke is finally Luke again, except he can interact with the Living World. Mustafar suddenly has trees. The ship-yards for building the “Death Star Destroyers” were apparently under the ground. Where did the resources come from for the massive fleet? Rey is the grand-daughter of Palpatine (retconned in the books to her being the daughter of the non-force-sensitive clone of Palpatine). Rey stands in the exact spot on Endor(?) that some Sith worshipper used to carve out a dagger that shows where on the miraculously non-corroded Death Star part, that settled perfectly into an ocean, the second Sith Way finder is. The First Order constantly threatens planet’s sovereignty and they do squat. Apparently Kylo can survive his ship exploding. Force Healing is suddenly an insta-heal ability. Rey is suddenly the Avatar, channeling all the power of Jedi Past to use against Palpatine while forming an X with Anakin and Leia’s lightsabers. Again, I could go on. 3. Use in my stories – Based on my rant above, it is probably a very safe bet that in my stories I will be mostly sticking with Legends Material. · H2O Just Add Water/Mermaid Adventures: 1. Good Points – The mermaid transformation and powers, which are a bit different between the two shows. The story is good and shows their troubles (and the parts I don’t like generally have more to do with it being directed toward girls). 2. Problems – Wasted characters, and the show makers should have quit while they were ahead (instead of doing season three and the spinoffs). 3. Use in my stories – It won’t feature all that prominently, except in one story I am planning that is a Ranma crossover, and I am going to be doing a mishmash continuity that combines the live action and cartoon versions of the show. · Gold Digger: 1. Good Points – The Magic, Science stuff, and the nods to different series. 2. Problems – The narrative direction is all over the place because time travel, though the author does try to resolve his plot threads. The other really big problem is that the author is almost a more massive pervert than the guy who made DxD. 3. Use in my stories – The series form of were-creatures and a few other aspects will make their appearance. · Transformers Prime: 1. Good Points – Just about everything. The writers were forced to quit while they were ahead so they didn’t destroy their own series. 2. Problems – Then the Spin-Off series happened. 3. Use in my stories – We shall see. J · Ben 10: 1. Good Points – The original series had a nice blend of humor and seriousness, which shifted to a more serious bent in Alien Force. The Alien transformations. 2. Problems – Ben starts to mature in Alien Force, and then he turns back into an immature punk in Ultimate Alien which gets worse in Omniverse which took a decided turn to the not-humorous (yes… I went there). Gwen becoming Anodite Sue 3. Use in my stories – Alien Force Ben with Ultimate Alien and Omniverse Aliens, except for the Lego one, that is just a big fat nope. |
