AN: Enjoy!
Monica Rambeau had been through a lot since the events of Westview. She'd become the new Director of S.W.O.R.D, beginning to clean up the organisation after Hayward's reign of terror. Then, she'd fulfilled her dream of going to space, mastering her new powers and repairing her relationship with her Aunt Carol in the process.
Since then, however, things had been relatively quiet. S.W.O.R.D still needed quite a lot of work to get back on track, and to honour her Mother's memory, Monica had thrown herself into said work with great gusto. It was not at all an understatement to say that Monica was surprised to receive Wanda's message. She hadn't expected to hear from or see Wanda Maximoff anytime soon. Part of her had thought that she might not see Wanda ever again.
As surprised as she was to have received Wanda's message, Monica was even more surprised by its content.. A request that she babysit the twins, Tommy and Billy.
How was that possible?
Hadn't Tommy and Billy disappeared?
The message promised a valid explanation if she chose to show up at the coordinates provided, and while she didn't want to immediately think the worst, Monica couldn't help but wonder whether Wanda had magicked herself into trouble again.
She briefly thought about not going, letting someone else deal with whatever this was.. But then she thought about delivering baby Tommy, and Billy's sweet little grin when he said he liked her tricks.. But her conscience would not let her stay away.
If, by some strange miracle, the boys had returned, Monica would like to know they were alright. And if they weren't, and Wanda was somehow in trouble, then in recognition of everything Wanda had sacrificed, Monica needed to help her if she could.
So, on the date the message had asked, Monica made her way to the coordinates Wanda had listed, finding a cabin in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and shyly knocking on the door. There were muffled voices from inside, before the door finally opened, with Wanda standing on the other side.
"Hello, Monica.."
"Hi, Wanda..
"I.. I wasn't sure you'd come."
"For a while, neither was I.."
"I understand my message must have been a surprise.." Wanda toyed with her sleeve. "And what you probably must be thinking.."
It struck Monica how very nervous Wanda looked, far from the powerful, bad-ass witch she'd been well on her way to becoming the last time that Monica had seen her, and she couldn't help feeling a little guilty at how quickly she'd started thinking the worst.
"Well.." Monica smiled a slightly nervous smile, "You did say you had an explanation.."
"I do.." Wanda nodded, standing aside to let Monica in, then turning to call into the house, "Vizh, can you come here for a minute?"
"Just a moment, my love.." came a voice. Monica was startled to notice the voice was very familiar, and even more startled when Vision emerged from another room, clutching an infant of around nine months old to his chest. "Sorry about the extra guest.. Tommy went down easily enough, but Billy is being a little bit clingy.."
"That's okay.." Wanda smiled at him, then turned, hoping to settle Monica's slightly shocked state, "Like I said, we can explain.."
After properly introducing Vision to Monica, Wanda explained everything as well as she could. How the original Vision had found her, how, slowly but surely, they had put at least most of the broken pieces of themselves back together. At some point, Tommy began to fuss from the nursery, so Vision passed Billy to Wanda and went to fetch him.
"And then the twins happened.." Wanda blushed a little, bouncing Billy on her lap. "Pretty much in the traditional way that babies happen.. There may have been a little magic involved, I'm not sure, but not the kind that would hurt anyone. They're just.. It probably seems crazy, but they're still the same little boys, they're just.. Growing up a little more normally this time. We've pretty much all been huddled up here ever since.."
Monica didn't say much at first, but she definitely felt rather touched that she was somehow trusted enough to be welcomed into what was clearly Wanda's safe haven, and to be trusted with the safety of her children.
"So.." she managed eventually, "I'm here to babysit?"
"Maybe.. we don't really have anyone else to ask.." Wanda blushed again, still bouncing Billy. The baby boy was eyeing Monica as though he recognised her. "Somewhere in the middle of everything Vision and I got married, and Today's our wedding anniversary."
"Wow. Congrats!"
"Thanks.. The thing is, a lot of our special days in the past have been a bit, well.. Low key, because of stuff like me being on the run" Wanda explained. "Keeping our celebrations small never bothered me. I was always happy just to spend time with Vision, I still am.. But I think it bothered him more than I realised."
"How so?" Monica asked, curious.
"We've always been a pretty unusual couple. That won't change anytime soon. But I think, sometimes, he wants to be a little more.. Not normal, exactly, but.. I think it would mean a lot to him, to take me out somewhere for our Anniversary. That's really why I called you. It's for him more than me."
At that moment, Vision exited the Nursery with Tommy.
Monica glanced between Wanda and Vision, thought for a moment, then held out her arms.
"Okay, give me those babies, show me where to find the bottles and diapers, then go get ready."
"What.. for what?" Vision blinked, confused.
"Your big night out" Monica smiled. "That's why I'm here isn't it? Rambeau's babysitting service!"
"Do you mean it?" Wanda was cautiously hopeful. "I know I asked, and you came all this way, but.."
"Wanda, you've sacrificed more than enough" Monica cut her off. "You shouldn't have to give up your special days too, not when somebody is willing to help."
"Thank you, Monica" Wanda managed a smile.
"Yes, thank you, this really means a lot to us.." Vision carefully handed her Tommy. "We'll go get some things ready, and then come back and go over their schedules.."
"Got it."
"Call if they get fussy.." Wanda hesitated for just a moment before handing Billy over as well. "They've never been with anyone else before."
"They'll be safe with me, I promise" Said Monica. "You go work out everything you need to get done to enjoy your night out."
"Right.. okay.." Wanda slowly left the room.
Monica sat down with the boys. Tommy toyed with her sleeve, and Billy grinned at her, a strange sparkle of recognition in his eyes.
Monica smiled at them both.
"Hey, little guys. I've learned a lot of new tricks. Maybe later I can show you some."
"Do you mean it?" Wanda was cautiously hopeful. "I know I asked, and you came all this way, but.."
"Wanda, you've sacrificed more than enough" Monica cut her off. "You shouldn't have to give up your special days too, not when somebody is willing to help."
