A/N: Hello! This is a side fic I have been slowly working on. I plan on this being a three part series. I would love to hear what other ships you all think I should include as Tokoyami and Mina try their best to meddle in someone else's affairs. Should they fall for each other? or do they assist each other with their own love lives?
Love you all! Traditional Twist
Help Me Set This Ship a Sail
Meet me outside of Gym Gamma at Lunch.
-Fumikage Tokoyami
It was a very strange note for Mina to receive. She barely noticed when Dark Shadow slipped the note in her hand as Tokoyami walked out of class.
"This is a new level of mystery, even for Tokoyami," Mina muttered to herself.
As she approached the gym, she saw Tokoyami down the grease, leaning against a tree. She waved and rushed over.
"Hey, Tokoyami!"
"Ashido, thank you for coming," Tokoyami said with a head nod.
Dark Shadow slipped from his chest and approached Mina as she sat down. She smiled, and gave the quirk the head pats it desired.
"Sure thing. Is everything okay? I didn't really expect to get a note from you… ever."
"Yeah," Tokoyami rubbed the back of his neck. "I apologize for how awkward this is. You were the only person I could think of that could help me with a problem."
Mina's eyes widened. "Me?" What kind of problem could Tokoyami be having that only she could help? It certainly wasn't class work related. He usually did much better than her on exams.
"From what I can tell, you are the only one in our class with any sort of experience or desire to help others with relationships."
Mina began to rock back and forth with excitement. She loved romance. All she wanted was to watch others fall in love. It was the most beautiful thing in the world. She placed a finger on Tokoyami's beak. "Say no more. Just tell who it is that you like and I will see what I can find out."
Tokoyami pushed her hand away. "That's not what I need help with."
"Don't be embarrassed, Tokoyami. Let's see. Just to make this fast, it's not me right? I mean you are cool and all, but I have my eyes somewhere else."
"This is not about you."
"Okay, then which girl? I have seen you around everyone, actually. I'm not sure who you would have bias towards. You've done a lot of work with Tsu, though Dark Shadow gets a lot of pets from Hagakure."
"It's not me," Tokoyami said flat faced.
"Okay," Mina rolled her eyes. She was not convinced. "If it's not you, then who?"
Tokoyami paused for a long while. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it several times. He had to make sure he said what he wanted. He needed to say what he had been seeing.
A smug look crossed Mina's face. "It's okay if it's you, Toko-"
"It's Kaminari. I don't know how to describe it, but I know Kaminari is in love with Jirou."
Mina was so flabbergasted that she had to place her hands on the ground to stabilize herself. "Kaminari is in love with Jirou?"
"Yes. I first noticed it when we were first practicing our parts together for the festival. Kaminari had this motivation that I could not explain. As we strummed our parts over and over, his fingers would bleed. I'd ask if he wanted to stop, but he never did. Instead, he would talk about how awesome it was for Jirou to write our parts. He was so impressed by her voice and her knowledge of everything musical."
As Tokoyami spoke, Mina leaned in closer.
"This hasn't stopped since the festival," Tokoyami continued. "When Kaminari speaks of Jirou, there is something that changes in him. His whole demeanor changes. He suddenly sits up straighter. His shoulders are... More relaxed. He lights up, emotionally and spiritually. There is a brighter aura. It doesn't matter where we are, or what is happening. When Jirou is brought up, Kaminari is just happier. I know it must be love. What else would make a person so spiritually enthused?"
Mina nodded her head. She beamed as she heard this. "It has to be love," she agreed.
"Normally, I would not place myself in the middle of someone else's romantic inclinations. But something happened today that was different. In English, while we were working with our nearest seat partners, I was working with Sero. He called over to Kaminari about something, and Mic sensei yelled at them both, remember?"
"Yeah, that was so loud! Kaminari had done something stupid right? It made everyone laugh. I forget what he had done. Something with Sero's phone, right?"
Tokoyami nodded his head. "Everyone laughed. When Mic was yelling, I glanced over to Jirou. Though finished laughing, and wincing at the loud echoes of our teacher, she was staring at Kaminari. And as she stared, I saw the light glow from within her. The look she was giving Kaminari was the same look I have seen him give her many times over. She was at complete peace within all the chaos. That's when I realized it was love. I believe she loves him too."
Mina gasped loudly and punched Tokoyami with excitement. "You think that Kaminari and Jirou are in love!"
"I do. And that's why I need your help. I've never felt inclined to meddle in someone else's affairs. This… This feels different. I feel like I am the only one that sees the pieces. I am the only one who notices that this bright, wonderful feeling is emitting in the darkness of our class's chaos. Destiny has drawn me in. It is telling me that I need to show these two that they are both in love. They don't need to try and hide their glances at each other. I must do something, but I don't know what. Do you have any suggestions?"
Mina leaned into Tokoyami's face, She stared into his unflinching red eyes. "You are serious?" He nodded his head. Mina's mouth dropped. "Wow! I had no idea they both had such feelings. I always assumed Jirou wasn't ready to date. She was always so nervous around any sort of romance. She gets second hand embarrassment from movies!"
"In all sincerity I think it's a recent discovery. I wonder if either is aware of their own feelings." Tokoyami folded his arms across his chest. "I imagine they are all still grieving with the intensity of our last all class outing."
"Yeah, our class moral is low. Mina hung her head. The Two sat in silence for a somber moment. Mina clapped her hands together. "Well coming to me was the right decision! We will get those two together. First I need to see their love in action."
Tokoyami opened his mouth to speak, but closed it. Mina could see the thoughts racing in his mind.
"Just spit it out, Tokoyami!"
"I had a sort of thought of what can be done to bring them closer."
Mina leaned closer. "Go on."
"Friday night is movie night. It is my turn to pick the movie."
"And if you picked something romantic then it would totally set the mood! OMG! Do you want any suggestions?" Mina was bouncing with excitement.
Tokoyami shook his head. "I have something in mind. They also would come from my style as well. Your run of the mill "chick flick" would probably raise a red flag.".
"That's true, but you don't want to offend or scare anyone with your movies. What are you suggesting? And please tell me it isn't something super groosum."
"I don't think you trust that I am a bit of a romantic. Why else would I be here? " Tokoyami shook his head and sighed.
Mina laughed. "Romantic, with your dark and horror based attitude? Now I need to know what you are thinking."
"I was going to ask you to judge these movies for me, but now I feel I have been issued a challenge." Tokoyami stood up. "At least now you can say we met because I was asking for movie advice."
"Oh come on Tokoyami, don't walk away butt hurt. What are the movies? I will watch them and report which is the most romantic."
"I will tell you what I am considering. The Spirit in the Theater." He watched Mina's expression. She seemed sceptical. "It's a musical. It's actually regarded as one of the most romantic plays."
Mina smiled. "That sounds nice. It's not too gory, right?"
Tokoyami shook his head. "I will not make that mistake again. Asui made it very clear that my last movie was of poor taste," He hung his head at that thought. "I have discredited myself with such a foolish attempt."
"It wasn't that bad. You know how Tsu can be," Mina tried to pick Tokoyami's spirits up.
"You mean incredibly forthcoming and honest?" Tokoyami said, looking at her.
"No one holds that against you," Mina said. "And look, now we have a really good cover for meeting. I'll even pass the movie by some of the girls to see what they think. Do you have a second movie in case The Spirit in the Theater is deemed not okay?"
"I had considered Interview with the Undead, but I worry the plot twist may be too dire. I suppose Netherworld would be alright. It follows a mixed romance of Vampires and Werewolves, however, it is a slow burn and the first real romantic moment isn't until Movie two. The prequel is a romance but tragedy. I don't want everyone to feel saddened."
MIna was not prepared for so much information. She couldn't even remember the title of this movie. "Tokoyami, could you just text me the titles and blurb about each one?"
Tokoyami nodded and pulled out his phone. Dark Shadow approached Mina, searching for head scratches as Tokoyami typed out their titles and explanations. After a few minutes the text was sent and Dark Shadow was returned.
Mina read the message before giving a thumbs up. "This is perfect. I will read this to the girls and let you know which one they want to watch."
"Thank you," Tokoyami said.
"I will also pry into Jirou and see what she really thinks about Kaminari." Tokoyami tilted his head sceptically. Mina saw and quickly provided an explanation. "I know you said you saw it, but I want to see it. Or at least get more proof of her feelings. Jirou is sensitive to relationships."
"Understandable. I know Kaminari has strong feelings. Perhaps her feelings will be just as strong, just not as shown."
MIna checked the time. "We should go get lunch before class. I'd hate it if we didn't eat at all. I will talk to the girls after class."
"I will let you know what I find out from Kaminari today. We are jamming in my room after class." Tokoyami posed as if playing guitar for a moment, just to show what he meant.
Mina smiled. The two left the gym and made their way to the cafeteria. They went their separate ways.
Mina grabbed her food and found the rest of class 1-A's girls eating. "Hey girls!"
"Mina! Where were you?" Hagakure cheered as she sat.
"I was with Tokoyami," Mina said.
That caught their interests.
"You were with Tokoyami?" Ochaco finally asked.
Mina nodded, swallowing a bite. "He passed me a note to meet him to talk."
"What did Tokoyami want to talk to you about in private?" Momo asked.
"Yeah, did something exciting happen between you two?" Jirou said with a smirk.
Mina shook her head. "Oh no. He just wanted help picking a movie for Friday."
Tsu seemed to relax in her seat slightly at that thought. Jirou laughed. "Was he asking you which gory movie would cause us to scream less?"
Mina rolled her eyes. "No, he was actually looking at more of a romantic movie for Friday."
"It's nice to know he is asking about films. Did you give him suggestions? Ribbit." Tsu said.
"He actually gave me a list of movies he is thinking about," Mina explained.
"What!" Ochaco yelled. "I've been working myself up for these scary movies all week! Kirishima and I were going to box after the film to work out the energy."
"Ribbit. I'm actually relieved for a not so scary film," Tsu admitted.
"Yeah, Tokoyami said you confronted him about the movies, Tsu. He seemed pretty down when he mentioned that. What did you say?" Mina asked.
Tsu sighed. "I told him I had several of the worst nightmares I have ever had, so I wasn't sleeping."
"Is that True Tsu?" Momo asked.
"Do I lie, Momo?" Tsu asked.
"No wonder he looked so hurt. Well, we have three movies to judge. Can we meet up after school to discuss them?" Mina asked. All the girls agreed and a new topic to over their table.
Over with boys, Tokoyami joined a long table with Kaminari, Sero, Shoji, Ojiro, Mineta and Koda.
"I see you have come back from your one on one time with Ashido," Mineta commented to Tokoyami.
"Yes," Tokoyami said. He sat down and took a bite of his meal.
"Care to share what you were doing? Something promiscuous I presume." Mineta moved closer to Tokoyami.
Dark Shadow hopped out and growled at Mineta as he entered Tokoyami's space.
"Mineta, let Tokoyami be," Shoji scolded.
"Are none of you curious? Ashido is one hot babe! Please don't tell me you wasted an opportunity to be alone with her."
Sero's tape stretched across the table and wrapped Mineta up in a cocoon. "Mineta, you need to calm down."
"Why is it that two classmates can not converse without a perverted comment," Tokoyami said with a sigh.
"What were you talking about?" Kaminari asked.
"I was providing a few titles of movie suggestions for Friday. I have been informed my previous movie choice had caused some class members some great disturbance."
"Dude, you can't take responsibility for Midoriya. He is always zoned out of every movie," Kaminari said.
The table laughed. Ojiro cleared his throat. "That's why he is always extra scared."
"He wasn't the one who confronted me on the issue." Tokoyami shot a sorrowful look at the girls table. "In any matter, I have asked Mina to review and discuss what titles would be appropriate."
"I'm sure it will be fine," said Sero. "I'm looking forward to movie night."
"Me too," said a soft Kmainari voice.
The rest of the table went about eating. Tokoyami watched Kaminari. He eyes were
Constantly shifting towards the girls table; towards Jirou.
"I'm trying my best for you, Kaminari," Tokoyami thought. "I will see to it that your love shines through, whatever the cost."
