easier if i let the tension subside

(title song from Ordinary, by Joriah Kwame)

Luz never noticed this before, but the little quirks Amity has is adorable. Like, adorable beyond belief.

For instance, Amity would puff out her cheeks whenever she was in deep concentration, or when she got frustrated. It reminds Luz of a little kid, and it's cute. In a totally platonic way, of course. Totally platonic, very normal friend behaviour.

Anyway, Luz knows that everyone has their own quirks. Heck, she has dozens of them! But for some odd reason, Luz finds Amity's more... pleasing to watch? No wait, that sounded a tad bit too creepy... Lovely? Adorable? Is this how a platonic friend suppose to feel? Luz wouldn't know, she's too inexperience to know, but she can't help but feel like it isn't... Is it?

Then, the conversation with Willow from a week ago echoed in her mind. Would Amity ever look at her like that? Luz was still on the fence with that one, despite everything, and it's killing her inside.

Like any other crush— friend, Luz worries that she would damage their relationship. It never occurred to her that someone could love her faults.

"Ay Dios mío... Would Amity really like me—"

Before she could go further into that thought, the certain witch snapped her focus back to reality.

"Luz? Are you okay?" Amity asked out of concern, but Luz can't help but notice the light glimmering in her eyes. "You look... well, distracted."

Luz blinked, still caught up in Amity's eyes. Then, she realised she was staring.

Panicking internally, she tried and stay cool. "You got this Noceda!" "What? Pfft, me? Distracted? I always am! I mean— I'm fineee!" "...Could be worst."

Amity raised an eyebrow, totally not convinced, "Uh, are you sure?"

"Yes, definitely, absolutely." Luz was sweating bullets. She wasn't the best at lying in front of a pretty girl. "Wait, pretty girl? I mean, Amity is pretty, but is that too much? I am only her friend after all. Maybe, this isn't normal? But then again, is thinking that another girl is pretty a crime though? If so, I feel like I should be arrested multiple times now. Curse 2D characters that are oddly attractive no matter what they do!"

"Luz? You're... um, well, you're staring, again." Amity subconsciously hid her face partially behind the book she was reading, suddenly self-conscious about her appearance, Luz guessed. Who wouldn't be when you've been stared at by someone else? "Um, are you sure you're okay? Do you want something to drink? Do you need to rest for a bit?"

Luz actually thought about those suggestions for a while before shaking her head. "No, it's fine. I'm totally fine... What were we doing again?" The thoughts in her head made her lost track of what she was doing before.

"Uh, we were doing homework," Amity said, as if that was the most obvious thing in the world. It should be too, since said incomplete homework was right in front of her, lying on the table, waiting to be finished.

"Ah, right. We were." Luz stared at her Abominations homework.

"Yeah, we were." Amity looked really concern. Luz felt guilty that she got her friend worried over nothing, but also touched that her friend was concern over little ol' Luz. It's a nice change of pace from the kids back in the human realm.

After what seems like an hour of just Luz staring while Amity awkwardly avoid eye contact, Luz spoke up. "How are you so cute?"

"W— What?" Amity's voice squeaked from the sudden question, which earned a "shush!" from the librarian.

Luz just sees this as an opportunity to flirt— tease further.

"I mean," Luz got closer to Amity, which is a habit she does when she thought that something was interesting, "You're just so adorable without trying to be. How? Do you have a magic spell that makes you as adorable as a puppy? I don't think so, because you look way too natural for it to be a spell."

Amity looked like she was about to pass out, so Luz stopped with the compliments. The last thing she wanted was Amity passing out from annoyance. Or at least, she assumes that it was annoyance, because what else could it be? She knows that Amity's face goes red from anger (all thanks to Edric's dramatic performance of it), so is it really that impossible to believe that it implies to annoyance as well?

"...Did I go to far? Sorry about that," Luz backed off. "Are you mad at me?"

"What? N— No! Of course not! Just... caught off guard, that's all," Amity responded, waving her hands everywhere to dismiss the question. Her face was still red.

"Oh, alright then!" Luz chirped.

"Um, why don't we just, finish our homework?" Amity suggested, gesturing to the unfinished homework on the table.

That brought back Luz's attention, "Right, right. We should finish our homework. Be a good student and all that," Luz chuckled out of, questionable, nervousness. Why was she nervous?

Amity nodded, and Luz couldn't help but note that her eyes had lighten up. Why would that be? Maybe it's a trick of the light again.

...Yeah, definitely a trick of the light. After all, Amity was just a friend. An adorable friend with an amazing skill in magic. A cute friend that reads stories to children and use different voices for different characters. An ordinary, platonic friend.

Sure, Luz secretly catches Amity's stares whenever they were with one another, and she noticed the way Amity looks at her with that indescribable look in her eyes, but surely that means something else. Surely. Maybe Luz forgotten something, maybe Amity just wanted to tell her something but forgot, maybe she was looking at the thing behind her.

...Yup, they have a totally ordinary friendship. Pure friendship, nothing more, nothing less. Okay, that one was probably a lie. They were just close friends, but that's all. Period, end of story.

...Okay, well, it wouldn't hurt to believe in that for a longer time, right?...

Right?

A/N: I said this was a one shot yet here I am, few months later, updating this. Fun fact: this was a separate one shot, but I thought that "hey it fits", so I added it here with some minor edits. This was originally written before Season 2, but this really could be placed in any point in the timeline.

Time to go to my hobbit hole now. Have a lovely day, stay safe, and hydrate yourself. See ya.
