I wrote this awhile back and haven't proofread it… but if I don't post it now, I'll never remember to do it.

Amity flipped absentmindedly though the first chapter of Good Witch Azura #1 without really absorbing the story. She'd decided that all this time being stuck in bed would be a good time for her to reread the series, especially since the fifth book was fresh in her mind. Unfortunately, the only thing she could focus on was the girl who'd loaned her that book in the first place.

She willed herself not to think of Luz's beautiful brown hair and eyes and instead focus on the text in front of her. If she didn't look like she was busy reading, she might be interrupted by her siblings, or worse, her mother, Odalia.

"Hey, Mittens, you've got a visitor," Ed's sing-song voice called out.

Right on cue.

"I'll bet you can guess who it is." Em gave Amity a wink as her head poked into the room beside her twin's.

Amity twisted her body away as much as possible, leaving her injured leg elevated and in the same position. "Leave me alone. I don't want to talk to anyone."

"Oh. I can come back later if you want."

Luz's voice made Amity jump anxiously. "Luz? Hi. Oh. No, you don't have to leave. What are you doing here? Sorry, that sounded kind of harsh."

Luz stepped through the bedroom doorway, carrying a small metal bowl. She looked around, taking in the room with genuine interest.

"You got some sweet digs her, Blight."

Amity flushed slightly. "It's not that exciting. Is it?"

"Whoa, that's Lilith! She looks great. Do all great witches end up on posters? I think I'd look pretty cool on a poster."

Amity thought that Luz definitely would look good on a poster (and on her wall) but refrained from saying so. Instead, she blurted out, "don't you still have one from when you were banned at Hexside?"

She regretted it almost immediately. Amity didn't want Luz to remember her back when she had been so cruel. She didn't want to think of herself that way either. Luz didn't seem to take any notice of the deeper implications, though.

"Oh, yeah! I love that one." Luz continued wandering around the room, not focusing on anything in particular. Amity resented - no, envied - Luz's ability to focus on the bright side of things. She could find the fun in any situation no matter how dire. She'd been funny and optimistic in the library when they were nearly sewn into a book together - and it had made Amity laugh at the ridiculous situation they were in. Luz's spirit was contagious, and Amity enjoyed how warm and alive she felt around the human girl.

"Hey, check out these drawings." Amity snapped out of her infatuated haze as she saw Luz scoop up a few pages from a side table. "I'll say it once, I'll say it again… you are an ar-tist, Amity Blight."

Amity wanted to be embarrassed, but there was nothing she could do. She couldn't leap up and snatch the drawings back from Luz. She was too tired and weak to cast any substantial spells. And, honestly, it was nice to be complimented. No one ever did that for her outside of her teachers at Hexside.

"Thanks. I, um, there's not really much else to do while I'm stuck here."

Luz seemed to notice the bowl in her hands for the first time. "I brought you this. Sorry, I forgot to give it to you. I've never seen a witch's bedroom. Aside from Eda's."

Amity's heart fell. Was that the only reason Luz was interested in her room? Would she be as excited to see any other witch's room?

"Anyways, it's a witch's brew. I made it myself. Eda said it was edible, so I took that as a good sign. Man, potions are hard, let me tell you. Glad I'm not just on that track anymore."

Amity took the bowl gratefully. "You were only on potions track for a day," she teased.

"It was a long day," Luz countered as she sat on the edge of the bed near Amity.

Amity drank from the bowl, not hesitating in front of Luz. She wanted the human girl to know that she was appreciative of the gesture. To her surprise, the concoction was surprisingly pleasant. It wasn't a perfect brew, but Luz's aptitude for magic clearly extended to potions, which Amity wagered would be one of the easier magics for humans to begin with.

"Luz, this is… really good. You're getting to be a pretty great witch." As she blurted the words out, Amity thought about how she never would have said those words to a human just a couple months ago.

The compliment seemed to take Luz aback as well. Not many things did that. "Wow. Really?"

Amity nodded meekly.

"That means a lot coming from you. I don't know if I'll ever be as good a witch as you, Amity. But I'd like to be."

But you are, Amity thought to herself. She thought about Luz fighting Grom and how powerful her glyphs had become. Amity still needed a training wand to learn new spells, and she had been casting for nearly her whole life. Luz wouldn't be as good a witch as Amity - someday, she'd be better.

It was a thought that plagued the academic side of her. Amity was used to being Hexside's top student. School was the place she shined, where she was praised and had accolades to back up her social standing. For some reason, though, the thought of being surpassed by Luz didn't outrage her like it had at Covention. She was more than happy to see Luz succeed now - she was rooting for her.

"I probably ought to get back to the Owl House. I'm cleaning Hooty today. And trust me, that has to be done before nightfall or it gets way scarier." Luz stood then seemed to think of something. She walked over to the side table with the drawings and picked up a pen. She crossed back over to the bed and leaned over Amity's injured leg.

Amity tried to tilt her head but couldn't see her leg behind Luz's body. Was she adding some sort of glyph? "What are you doing?"

"In the human realm, breaking something is kind of a rite of passage, and we celebrate by signing your cast."

Amity looked and saw that on the cast now was Luz's name scrawled across it in a curly font, accompanied by a small heart.

Amity couldn't help breaking into a full smile. "Thanks, Luz. I love it."

The human girl leaned down and scooped Amity into a hug, the warmth of which made Amity blush once again. "Catch you later, Blight," Luz declared as she backed away towards the door making hand gestures that she'd previously described to Amity as 'finger guns'.

As Luz disappeared from the doorway, Ed and Em's annoyingly perfect heads poked back in. "So, Mittens…"

Feeling more energetic than ever since her grudgby injury, Amity summoned up a gust of magic from inside herself and drew a circle in the air. The door flew shut, and on the other side, Amity thought she heard Ed squeal in pain.

Amity pulled the side table closer to her, picking up the drawings and her pencils. It felt like a good time to work on her crosshatching.
