Summary – Luz confesses to Amity through a word game. Cute Lumity fluff.

Spelling it Out

Amity took her seat at the table opposite Luz and in the Owl House and watched her set up the tiles for the game Luz wanted them to play.

"So, what's this this game called again?" Amity asked.

"Bananagrams!" Luz grinned, holding up a yellow banana shaped bag the tiles had come in. one of the few things she'd brought from home.

"Bananagrams?" Amity echoed, "But I don't see any bananas?"

Luz giggled. "Of course not, silly. This s a word game. Just with banana themes. Also, I think whoever made it just really liked bananas."

Amity sighed and shook her head. "You humans are weird."

"Yep!" Luz said proudly. "Now lemme explain the rules. The goal here is to use all your tiles to make words that read across vertically or horizontally. When you put down your last tile, you say 'peel' and take another from the big pile. That's the bunch. When all the tiles are gone and your tiles are all used in your grid, you shout 'bananas!', and then you win. And get to be top banana."

"Sounds easy enough," Amity conceded as Luz gave them each twenty one tiles to start off the game.

"Okay, ready?"

Amity nodded. "Yep."

"Split!"

"What?"

"Turn all your tiles over," Luz prompted.

Amity blushed. "Oh. Right."

She quickly turned all her tiles over and started making up her own little crossword – only without the clues.

"Peel," Luz said, taking another tile from the bunch.

"Aw man," Amity frowned as she picked up a new tile. "What am I supposed to do with this Q?"

Luz looked up from her own tiles. "Hmm. You know you can always say 'dump' and trade it for three more tiles."

"Oh, I can do that?"

"Yep," Luz smiled, "As often as you like."

"Thanks Luz."

"Anytime."

They played together for a while, until Amity placed her last time and called out, "Bananas! I win!"

She smirked as she announced her victory, and Luz looked at her grid, impressed.

"Wow, you're fast, Amity. I got stuck with these letters. And I had no idea where to put this O. You're really good at this.

Amity's cheeks flushed again, and she smiled at the compliment.

"Ah, really? Thanks."

Luz smiled back at her. "Shall we play again?"

"Oh yes, I like this game."

Luz grinned. "Best two out of three?"

"You're on."

They played several more games together, both girls winning an equal number of times, just laughing and enjoying their day together. Amity hadn't played a board game in so long, she'd forgotten how fun it could be. And by the end of their fifth game Amity was breathless from laughing and ready for a drink and some snacks.

"Do you want anything from the kitchen?" she asked Luz. "I can get you something." She knew her way around the Owl House enough by now to navigate the kitchen. Having been around here so many times with Luz.

"Oh, some chips and soda would be great," Luz told her, "Having fun sure makes you hungry."

Amity gave a little laugh and agreed, then disappeared into the kitchen to fetch the drinks and snacks.

Luz sighed after her, a soft smile on her face. God, Amity was gorgeous. Not only that, she was smart and sweet, with a kind heart. It was easy to fall for her.

Luz wondered if there was a way to tell Amity how she felt about her. If she said it, she just knew she'd get tongue tied and nervous, it'd probably all come out wrong and she'd only end up offending Amity somehow. So that was out.

She sat there, deep in thought, keenly aware it wouldn't be long before Amity came back with the snacks.

Then she glanced at the pile of letter tiles on the table, and a lightbulb flicked on in her head.

She reached for the letters and turned them over, seeking out the ones she needed. Thankfully, she didn't need many. When she'd spelled out her message for Amity, she turned the rest of the tiles back over and sat back in her chair. All she had to do now was wait for Amity to come back.

. . .

Amity walked back into the room carrying the tray of snacks and set it on the table between them. Sitting back down opposite Luz again.

"Okay Luz, are you ready for another..." she paused, glanced down at the table. At the words before her. "Round?"

Her cheeks heated when she read what Luz had done. The message laid out with the tiles from the word game, reading: I love you Amity.

"I..." Amity began, lost for words. For months now she'd been wondering if Luz returned her feelings. Guess now she had her answer.

She looked up to find Luz blushing opposite her.

"Well, say something, Blight. You're making me nervous here."

Amity snapped her gaze back up to Luz and tried to find her voice again. Swallowing the lump in her throat.

"Luz, I..." she felt her whole face heat up as she looked into her friends eyes. "That's really sweet," she finally managed. "I... I love you, too."

Oe heartbeat passed. Then two. Then three. And amity watched as the human's whole being seemed to light up.

"Really?" Luz exclaimed. "I... I thought I was the only one. That you just wanted to be friends."

Amity laughed, more out of relief then anything. "Oh Luz, no. Actually I've liked you for months. I can't believe you never noticed."

Now it was Luz's turn to laugh. "Well, I was kinda busy with with school and learning magic and trying to keep out of trouble..." she admitted. "But I'm so relieved that you like me! I can't tell you how long I'd been keeping it secret."

Amity smiled at Luz, soft and warm. "I could say the same thing," she said, tucking an errant lock of hair behind her ear. Heat colouring her cheeks as she met the girl's gaze.

"So... shall we make a date then?" she offered. "Go out to dinner somewhere maybe? Or the fairground for a day?"

Amity watched Luz's grin broaden, feeling hope – and a hell of a lot of butterflies – take flight inside her.

"It's a date!" Luz declared proudly, a light blush colouring her cheeks as well. "Shall we say this Friday after school?"

Amity grinned back at her, unable to keep her excitement contained. She hadn't felt this happy since the second Good Witch Azura book came out. "That sounds great."

"Wonderful! I'll come pick you up at eight then."

Amity felt heat rush up into her cheeks again, her smile matching Luz's for width.

"It's a date," she agreed.
