Thought Process
Takes place during and directly after S2E2: Escaping Expulsion.
"Sorry, can it wait 'till morning? I need to lie down." And process the events of the day; Luz was exhausted.
"Wait, Miss Teacher! Do I get extra credit?" Lilith's ice sculpture was just icing on the cake of things to think about. It was a… well-intentioned gesture, but the thought of anyone on their knees worshipping her made her uncomfortable.
She was amazed by its intricacy nonetheless. "Oh, my gosh."
Eda, jealous of her sister, presented a nondescript ball of ice. Wanting to get up to her room as soon as possible, Luz praised both sisters' work and headed up the stairs to flop onto her bed.
Despite nearly being killed by the Blight parents' creations, Luz mostly wanted a chance to think about their daughter. Amity had stood up to her mom… for her. Luz was again touched as she remembered the moment.
Luz was staring death (currently in the form of the Abomitron's axe) right in the face. Her thoughts in these moments were always laced with a panicked "oh Titan, I'm going to die this time," repeated over and over and keeping her from thinking clearly.
But the axe never fell. It was suspended in the air, surrounded by a magenta glow that Luz knew as— the Abomitron's arms suddenly exploded into goop, and she scrambled away from it.
"Hey! Stay away from my Luz!"
"Amity?" Luz immediately relaxed upon hearing her friend's voice.
Luz watched, adrenaline still coursing through her body, as Amity slid gracefully down a nearby rope. She touched down with spell circles at the ready and shattered her necklace (some strange Boiling Isles thing perhaps), then turned to look at Luz.
"Luz, are you okay?" The sincerity of Amity's concern gave Luz a strange fluttery feeling in her chest, and her brain chose that precise moment to register Amity's previous assertion. Her Luz.
"Uh-huh," she managed, face heating up. "Look out!"
Amity continued to battle the Abomitron, even as her mom demanded that she get away from Luz.
"No. You're going to listen to me for once." Amity said. "Luz, Willow and Gus are my friends. They're nice to each other, they listen to each other. They make me think about the kind of person I really want to be!"
Finally, Luz stopped watching from the sidelines and got up to help her friend. She pulled out her glyphs and moved to defend Amity's back. Amity took notice of her arrival and as their eyes met Luz noticed how pretty she was. Her actions faltered and she blushed, heart fluttering as she looked away.
Oh. Lying on her bed, Luz finally put words to her abnormal reactions during the fight. She had a crush on Amity.
God, that was inconvenient. And untimely; she had so many other things to worry about. Camp must be drawing to a close and she had no way to get home. Knowing that there was nothing she could do about her mamá's inevitable worry and heartbreak was weighing on her.
Not to mention everything Luz had to make right on the Isles - Eda had no magic because of her. Emperor Belos was punishing good people, just for being different. Weirdos weren't sticking together. It was not a good time to add something as silly as a crush to her collection of concerns.
But… it was, in a way, kind of comforting to have a crush. As the only human on the Boiling Isles, Luz stuck out like a sore thumb. Crushes were a common ground for witches and humans; she had related to many of the feelings and anxieties from Willow's memory. It was comforting, Luz realized, because it made her feel normal.
Besides, it wasn't like she could really do anything about it.
Plus, upon considering it Amity was probably the best person Luz could have had a crush on. She was clever and charming, and despite sometimes struggling with status her heart was in the right place.
Amity always strived to be better - a better witch, a better friend, a better person. Luz recognized and admired the amount of effort she put into being nicer to Willow and, today, even standing up to her parents. Amity had even said that Luz played a part in these positive changes.
Calmer, Luz brushed her teeth and settled into bed, ignoring her phone a few meters away. Twenty minutes later she abruptly sat up, startling King awake, as a thought occurred to her.
How was she going to face her new crush Amity at school tomorrow?
