"Come on, Eda! I want to go to bed already!" King whines, rubbing his tired eyes with his tiny widdle paws. He sits on the couch watching Eda drawing another paper glyph on the floor while being surrounded by balled up other papers, misshapen shards of ice with some partially melted, and ice spears sticking straight through the ceiling.
Eda dismissively waves her hand at him while carefully finishing the last detail of the ice glyph. "Nononono-wait. I think I got it. I got it this time." Spitting in one of her hands and rubbing them together first, Eda lowers herself onto the floor and gently presses her hand onto the sheet.
The spell activates as it glows beneath her palm. Slowly, ever so slowly, she raises her hand to make the ice rise out of the floor. It continues to rise until it is revealed to be a perfect sculpture of the King.
"Ah ha!" Eda exclaims, joyfully picking up the statue and showing it to her little buddy. " I did it! Better watch out now, sis! Because mama's catching up!"
King squints his eyes carefully at the statue of himself while rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "... eh, I'll give it B+ for effort," he shrugs. "Pretty sure my muscle mass is supposed to be like ten times bigger than that."
Eda rolls her eyes at him and spits her tongue at his opinion. "Well, I know Luz would love it," she huffs. "Speaking of, where is that little rascal?"
"Think she mentioned going to a library or something," King yawns.
Eda glances at the window to see it being pitch-black out there. She was so focused on honing her spells, she hadn't noticed the day was already over. "It's pretty late for her to still be out. And the library should've been closed by then… I'm worried. Maybe I should go out there and look for-"
Right on cue, Hooty slams himself open and sticks his head out in front of Eda. "Hoot hoot! Guess who it is!" he cheerfully exclaims. His face suddenly twists in pain as tears begin to stream down. "Not Lulu! Waaaah!"
Eda recoils back from Hooty's outburst before he slowly recedes back into his slot to allow Luz walk in before slamming himself back shut.
"Luz!" Both Eda and King rush to their favorite human who just stands there with a blank expression on her face while holding up the mouse in her hand.
"I'm home," Luz replied, robotically.
Eda excitedly shoves the ice, cold statue of King into Luz's face to show off her hard work. "Take a look at this! Looks like the master is about to take back her throne! I mean, sure, it took me eighty-four times to get it right but-hey, is that an echo mouse in your hand?"
King stares at the little rodent with a skull for its head and grunts in disgust. "Ew, it has a skull for a head! Why did you bring it here?"
"And did you find what you were looking for at the library?" Eda asked.
Luz didn't say a word even as Eda continued to prod her face with the ice statue nor did her eyes even look in their direction. It wasn't until Eda mentioned the library did she finally give them a response.
"Huh? Oh. Yeah, I did." muttered Luz, still in a hollow tone with a vacant stare. "This little guy has all the knowledge about the other human who might know a way back or something so he's going to be living with us from now on."
The little rodent crawls around her arm and down from her body to scurry over to the couch where it pops underneath and out sight.
"Oh good, another freeloader in the house." Eda glances to where it ran off to then back to her student who still hasn't changed from her stone-like appearance. She waves her hand over her face trying to invoke a reaction but still gets nothing out of her.
"Kinda thought you would be a little more… excited," Eda said, raising an eyebrow.
King scoffs while resting his hands onto his hips, "Obviously, Luz realized she'll have to leave us if she wants to return back home. Look at her! She's clearly devastated at the idea. But it's okay, Luz. I forgive you."
Eda ignores him and taps her student on the head with the statue, "No, I don't think that's it. Something must have happened while you were at the library. Something that's making you act this way and not acknowledging my hard work."
Luz's mask finally cracks as her lips begin to tremble. Her cheeks flaring up, her hands clenching tightly, and her knees begin wobbling. "Y-you're not wrong…" she mutters. "Something did happen. Something that I never thought could happen…"
Eda expresses her annoyance with the pronouns by groaning impatiently while shaking the ice statue King in front of her. "Is this something so important that you're still refusing to give me extra credit?" she demanded to know.
"... I just had my first kiss."
Eda stares back with wide eyes as her arms popped out of their sockets. Causing the sculpture in her hands to fall and smash into pieces. King flinches at the flying debris of ice before a large chunk of his head slides over to his feet.
"... welp, I'm going to have nightmares about this. Goodnight!" King steps his way between them and climbs upstairs for bed.
Eda's arms crawl their way back up her dress and help to put each other back into their sockets before giving their host a slap in the face to break the silence.
"No," Eda breathes, in disbelief.
"N-not a real kiss!" Luz exclaims, her face now burning red. "It was on the cheek! M-my cheek! On my face!"
"No!" repeated Eda.
"And it wasn't even from my mom!" Luz cries. "It was-"
"Ah ah!" Eda shuts her up by sticking her finger against her lips. "Don't squeal just yet! Get your butt on that couch right now, young lady! Because we are definitely gonna have to talk about this!" She rushes off into the kitchen where Luz can hear the loud, clattering sounds of pots and pans hitting the floor followed by shattering glass.
She quietly takes her seat on the farthest right of the couch just as Eda stumbles in while spilling her Appleblood into her wine glass from a bottle before setting it down on the table and taking her seat next to Luz.
Eda takes a deep sip of her glass and wiggles into her cushion to get comfortable. "Okay," Eda giddily grins. "Spill it, sister. Tell. Me. Everything!"
Luz realizes this was probably not a good idea as she still couldn't get over it despite the long walk she took on her way home. Let alone being forced to relive it by telling someone who is as close to family like Eda.
But even so, a part of her desperately wants to talk about it. Who else could she even talk to about it?
"Well…" Luz swallows, while anxiously fiddling with her thumbs. "I-I'm not even sure where to begin."
"Course you do," Eda chuckles. "Here, I'll make it easy for you. Tell me who it is. What's his name?" Eda takes a sip from her glass.
"It's… not a he. It's a she… my friend, Amity."
Eda chokes on her drink and spits out the Appleblood across the room like a sprinkler. She pounds her own chest to stop herself from coughing and wheezing for air. It took a moment for Eda to finally clear out her system before laying back in her seat and look back at her own student.
"... who is she again?"
"Eda!"
"Oh come on, you know I'm never good with names! And/or faces," Eda exclaimed, defensively. She squints her eyes and tries to take a guess, "Is it the one with the glasses? No, wait-the short one with the brown hair?"
"Wha-" Luz stares at her incredulously before throwing her hands up in frustration, "I just said it was a girl!"
"Willow isn't a girl?"
"I don't have time for this," Luz stands up from her spot, ready to march upstairs but Eda halts her by latching onto her arm.
"Kidding! I'm kidding! Yeesh, sorry. Just thought you'd like a joke to shake those nerves off." Eda gently pulls Luz back to her seat and tenderly brushes her hair. "I'll behave now, I promise. So… Amity, huh? The girl with the mint chocolate kinda hairdo?"
"It's purple now," Luz blurted. "She just dyed it before I went to see her again! And she looks beautiful! I mean, she was always beautiful but, like, somehow even more beautiful! How many times did I say beautiful?"
"Four times," Eda nods, clearly liking where this is going. "Well, color me surprised. You like her, don't you? Heh, guess I must have been losing my touch even before I lost my powers for not seeing it. Should have known with that little performance you two did at that Grom night."
"O-oh, no! That's not when it started!" Luz explains. "Or at least I don't think so… it only occurred to me just recently. When Amity came to my rescue while her parents tried to kill me for their saleshow."
Eda frowns and leans forward, "Her parents tried what now? You didn't tell me about that. When was this!?"
"The point is!" Luz doubles back, "I like Amity! Not as a friend but… as someone who likes someone, you know? She was so brave and cool back there! A-and I started thinking about how wonderfully sweet she is. How incredibly smart and powerful as a witch. And do you know pretty girls are? Because holy crud, she's so pretty!"
Eda pours herself another glass, grinning ear to ear. "Alright, slow your roll there, kiddo. You're about to invent a new language," she said, taking another sip. "Mmm, that's good. So let's get into the meat of this. How did it happen and what was it like?"
Luz whines like a lost dog as she tries to put the moment into words. The feeling of Amity's lips touching her cheek creating goosebumps on her skin. "I-I don't know how to describe it… I accidentally caused some trouble for Amity and went through even more trouble to make it up for her. I first thought the diary I was after was gone for good but she managed to save the day by showing me what that mouse could do. And then… she just…" She taps her cheek again, her face burning even hotter.
Eda raises her eyes at that. "Wait, like out of nowhere? Just like that?" interrogated Eda. "You sure you didn't skip any part about you two confessing your feelings or started flirting with each other? She just leaned over and gave you a peck?"
"Mhmm…" Luz nods.
Eda drains her glass and places it on the table. Her eyes wide with surprise as she sits back in stunned silence for a moment to process it all. "Wow," she clicks. "I can't believe it…"
"Right?" Luz breathes, cupping the cheek in one hand. "I-I didn't have the chance to say anything to her. I didn't think she would-"
"No, I'm saying I can't believe how pathetic of a mentor I'm being!" Eda groans, shaking her head at her own failure. "All this dating knowledge I acquired in my years and I haven't even shared one bit of them with you! If I had known this would happen I could've taught you to swing first!"
"Eda!"
"Alright, my bad. Continue, please."
"As I was saying…" Luz takes a deep breath. "I didn't know she would feel that way about me. I mean, that's the logical conclusion to make when someone does that to you, right? What else could it possibly be? But I always thought she liked someone else and-wait a minute… you don't think that letter she wrote was for me, was it?"
Eda shrugs, "Iunno. Did you ever see her talking about anyone else or acting any differently to someone besides you?"
Luz thinks back on it now that the veil has been pulled back. Amity did seem incredibly happy that night. And she didn't really dance with anyone else besides… her…
"I am so stupid," Luz robotically exclaims. "All this time… and I didn't even notice. Aaaargh!"
"Calm down, Luz," Eda reaches over to touch her shoulder. "Don't beat yourself up for that. It happens to the best of us. Especially Lilith." She snorts. "Oh man, if only you could've been there to see the amount of heart breaks she caused by assuming all those kids were just trying to be her friend. Girl could've been a weapon if she knew how to wield herself."
"But I'm nothing like Lillith!" Luz whines. "How could Amity like me? Me? I caused so much trouble for her! I'm awkward as heck and got my picture submitted for the definition of loser!"
"Hey, quit it!" Eda snaps her fingers at her. "You're no loser! Anyone who thinks that is the real loser who deserves a good walloping from mama! You have a lot of great qualities. You got a heart of gold. You're super energetic. Know how to make a killer pancake. You also have the incredible ability to find the good in anyone. And not to mention adorkable." She pinches Luz's cheek, making the girl laugh before Luz swats her hand away. "And those are ones just off the top of my head."
"That's sweet of you to say, Eda. But… I don't know. I'm not trying to be such a sour grape about it. I didn't think there really would be anyone who would like a girl like me. Let alone Amity of all people!"
Eda narrows her eyes at the girl with a sly grin. She doesn't say anything leading Luz to look back to notice the expression. "W-what?" she gulps.
"You're smiling," Eda cooed.
"A-am I?" Her hand goes to look for her mouth as she couldn't physically feel it anymore.
"Uhuh," Eda nods. "You're thrilled to find out the girl you like likes you back! Come on. Spill the beans. Tell me how you felt when it happened."
If Luz's mom had to compete with Eda in embarrassing the heck out of her, it would be an intense close match. Luz tries to plan out her escape route to avoid being scrutinized any further but knows Eda would stop at nothing to track her down like that pickpocket from the market square. He never did get far as Luz remembered hearing his blood curdling scream from the distance.
It's not like she doesn't want to tell Eda. Up until now, she's been holding back the flood. Keeping the gates closed and to not explode it all at her mentor. She didn't think Eda would care this much to try and pry it out of her like this. Luz never saw her being this attentive and focused even during their glyph lessons.
Something about the glow in Eda's eyes and the warm smile she's giving reminds Luz of her mom. Maybe that's why she decides to go ahead and pull the pin.
Luz shakingly smiles at Eda and shrugs, "I-I don't know how else to describe without it sounding so cheesy…"
Eda scoffs at her with a wave, "Lucky for you, cheddar's my favorite kind. S lay it on me."
"It was so magical!" Luz squeals. The gates have burst wide open. A surge of excited emotions pours out of her like a geyser. "And I mean magical! Her lips were so soft and she smelled like fresh hair dye but I didn't care! She was so cute when she got all flustered! I wanted to hug her! My legs gave out and I had to crawl my way back to town but it was amazing! I just want to-aaah!" She presses her face against a couch cushion and kicks her legs.
"Hey!" King shouts at them from upstairs. "Keep it down there! Some of us are trying to sleep!"
"Sorry!" Luz cries back. She resumes her freakout by screaming inaudibly into the pillow.
Eda pours herself another glass, knowing this one is going to keep her up all night. She couldn't stop grinning for Luz as she playfully punched her arm. Eda psychs her little fireball by loudly exclaiming, "There it is! I knew you couldn't hold it in! Was it amazing?"
"It was!"
"You feel like you could fly?"
"I do!"
"You want her to do it again!?"
"I do! I really do!"
"Then you go right to that girl tomorrow and ask. Her. Out!"
"Yeah-!" Luz shot her arms out before all the adrenaline pumping in her veins suddenly went out. Her face shatters into sheer horror as she processes what Eda just said. "W-wait… what now?"
Eda pauses before taking her sip and lowers her glass to frown at the girl. "What do you mean what? It's obvious, ain't it? You like her and she likes you. So ask the girl out."
Luz sputters like a dying engine and shrinks into her seat like she's trying to disappear into its crevice to hide herself from the world. "Ask her out!?" she spat. "Like… on a date? With her!?"
"Well, I mean you could go by yourself but then you'll have to deal with the pitiful stares," said Eda, as she playfully swirls the drink in her glass. "Unless you're in a restaurant then you could maybe score a free dessert. I got banned from that cheesecake place after doing it so many times."
Luz feels her stomach flipping over like the first time she tried Eda's Appleblood. Her body is shaking so bad she could puke at any moment. Eda sighs and puts her glass down before opening her arms to her. "Come here, you," she said, invitingly. Luz scoots over and wraps herself around Eda. She didn't realize how cold her body was getting until she felt Eda's warmth seeping through.
"Yeesh, you're like a nervous chihuahua. I take it you're not a fan of the idea?" Eda commented.
"I-I… I can't!" Luz whines. "Not that I don't want to! I really want to! But… but…"
"I know," Eda nods. "It's scary, isn't it? You never thought you could get this far and yet here you are. I take it you never had a relationship before?"
Luz shakes her head.
"I should've known better then. Sorry to drop that on you. But you can't let this opportunity go," said Eda, looking down at her student. "I'm still a head-turning beauty myself but I don't get many people chasing after me anymore. Either because they're too intimidated by my good looks or maybe the fact that I could turn into a giant, man-eating owl beast at a drop of a hat. It's only natural to feel this way. You only just learned about your crush on her and her feelings for you too."
"But… I don't know, Eda… What if she has the wrong idea about me? What if… what if I turn out to be a disappointment? What if we can't go back?" Luz sinks her face into the back of the couch.
Eda shakes her head. "I don't think either of you could go back now after what happened. Change can be scary. It can be worrying. It can be physically sickening. But think about all the good it will bring. I remember your first day here was like it was yesterday. When you were waiting for me by the stairs in my old bathrobe with a dirty traffic cone on your head. Back then I wasn't so sure how I would feel about you staying here. I thought you were going to end up as emergency food for King and I."
Luz chuckles, "Ha ha, very funny, Eda. That… that was a joke, right?"
"But despite my doubts, I found your presence here to be a very welcomed change." Eda fondly rubs her head, making it all messy and unkempt. "You and Amity are already friends. You both have similar interests, counting each other," she chuckles, much to Luz's dismay. "Things might seem different and scary but that's just your fears doing the talking. Try to imagine it. What would it be like if you two hook up?"
Despite her idea, it didn't make it any easier for Luz to retreat into her fantasy in front of her. But she still manages to and begins to picture the possibilities. The two of them. Hanging out together in various places. Helping each other study for their courses. Staying up late talking about the Azura series. Bringing Amity to her own world where they would be sitting at the table with her mom talking about their adventures. Hearing Amity laughing at her jokes and smiling just for her.
"It… it would be really nice actually," Luz admits. "You really think I should go for it?"
"You better," Eda pokes the girl on the forehead. "This mama bird will kick you out of the nest to get you to fly if she has to. If you're interested, I'll even share some of my pick-up lines that'll get that Blight heart turning. But from what you're telling me, it seems you already hooked a prized catch. All you gotta do is reel it in."
"Fishing metaphors now?" Luz giggles.
"That's my pops talking," Eda shrugs. "But what I'm trying to say is things won't happen until you make it happen. And I already saw you achieved the impossible. Ms. First Human Witch."
Luz beams at the title as Eda gives her another pat on the head before standing up from her seat. She lets out a groan while placing a hand on her stomach. "Ooh boy, I probably shouldn't have so much of that Appleblood before bed. I'm going to be up for a while but it's getting late for you. I understand if you still want some time to yourself before bed, though."
"I'll… I'll just need a minute and I'll head up," Luz promised. "And Eda… Thank you for listening and talking to me. I really needed that."
"I figured you would," Eda said. She leans over to give her another hug and pat her on the back. "I mean it when I say that I couldn't be even happier for you, Luz. And I have a feeling your mother would be too. We'll check out that diary thing first thing in the morning and after that, we'll continue this little chat of ours. Okay?"
Luz sheepishly nods, "Okay. Good night!" Eda says her goodnight and heads up the stairs. Leaving the human girl alone with her thoughts.
Amity. No matter how hard she tries, she can't think of anything else. Her voice. Her face. Her kiss. Luz grasps her cheeks to cool them off but the images in her head are only adding more fuel to the heat.
She wonders if Amity is feeling the same back at home. Probably even more embarrassed over the kiss than Luz is. The poor girl. If only Luz had told her then. Told her that she didn't mind. Told her how great it was. And then would ask her if they could do it again. She could hardly wait for tomorrow to come now.
"Me and Amity, huh?" Luz swoons. "I'd like that... I'd really like that."
Poking its head out from under the couch, the echo mouse crawls out onto Luz's leg and climbs its way up to her. Luz looks down at the little guy and rubs her finger along its fur.
"If only I could get you to record that moment of us back there, little guy." Luz sighs, "I'd like to relive it again. Over. And over. And over again."
Update: It came to my attention that Dana made a statement saying it's too late for regular Season 3 to happen and that the show will end with three 44 minutes episodes. My apologies for getting anyone's hopes up. I only wish I'd known sooner so I could've spread the message on my other fic.
But I don't want to end this fic on a sad note when it's supposed to be hopeful. So I want to say that even though the show is ending sooner than it should, I have full faith in Dana and the other creators to give this show a satisfying end. Especially after what someone pointed out to me, there will still be specials and spin offs to give us more. Their passion for the series is what convinced me that despite the disappointing news, there will be a satisfying end for us.
As for me, I really like writing stories about the Owl House way more than I thought I would. And Lumity is by far my favorite ship. While I enjoyed writing my first one a lot, I feel it could've been better. There were things I didn't know and mistakes that were left way too late for me to notice, but I learned a lot and will keep learning to improve so I could deliver even better stories to you all.
So as always, thank you for reading. And take care.
