Disclaimer: I don't own The Owl House, just this story

Luz Noceda started her morning like she normally did in the Boiling Isles; she woke to the sound of snores and stirring from King, light trickling through the windowpane and slowly flooding the room. She let out a sleepy yawn and combed her fingers through King's raven fur before getting up carefully as to not disturb her sleeping companion. Throwing on her school uniform, the bright-eyed witch-in-training made her way downstairs to find Eda wildly flinging a myriad of potion ingredients around the room, mumbling under her breath as she dug through cabinets.

"Uh... Eda? Whatcha up to?" Luz inquired, absentmindedly fiddling with something she hoped was a bowl of berries. Engrossed in her search, the owl lady didn't catch the question.

Instead, the crass and bubbly voice of Hooty piped up as his long neck wrapped around the human, "She's making an energy potion! But miss All-Powerful-Witch here can't find the last ingredientttt, hoot hoot!"

"Can it, bird-brain! I need to focus," griped the grey-haired witch. The mythical bird twittered sadly before retracting to his door once more, earning a small chuckle from Luz.

"What ingredient are you missing, Eda?" A large, excited smile spread across her face and she bounced on her toes happily, "I can help you find it! I have an hour or so before school starts."

Eda turned to face her with a hesitant expression, running her hand exasperatedly through her snowy hair. Defeated, she caved to the request, "Fine, fine. Stop bouncing like that, you're gonna give me a migraine, kid."

Luz let out an excited squeak as Eda held up an old, dusty grey book, the pages' edges weathered and torn. The older witch flipped to a page entitled Fallax Solem in a sharp script. Beneath it was a drawing of a large, white blossom with gold-tipped petals. It resembled an orchid in many ways, but, like most things in the Boiling Isles, delineated something much more magical than the human realm could.

"This flower, the Fallax Solem flower, grows in the woods near here. It grows on the forest floor, usually hidden by bushes or foliage because its petals don't react well to direct sunlight. It could mess with its magical properties if left in light too long. So, when you harvest it, try to keep it in the shade as much as you can," Eda laid the book down on the counter in front of her young student.

She studied the flower a moment before giving her mentor a nod. Just as she began to step out the door on her hunt, she heard scrambling down the stairs and a large 'thud.' King raced to catch up with her, his arms held open in a plea to be picked up, "Nyeh! Wait for me!"

Luz lifted her small demon friend into her arms and started towards the forest. Once they met the dirt path of the woods, King leapt from her arms. As they walked along, the two scoured the forest floor for the blossom, checking in every bush and nook and cranny. After twenty minutes of searching, Luz began to feel a bit worried that they may not find it. That is until her eyes caught sight of bright white petals settled at the base of an old, mossy tree. Her eyes lit up as she pointed to it, "King! Look! Is that the flower?"

King scuttled over to it, plucking it carefully with his claws, and handed it to the human girl. In her hands, Luz held a flower that matched exactly the drawing scribbled inside her mentor's potion book. She let out an excited squeal and tucked the flower gently into her pocket. The small demon scampered up her school robe and clung to her shoulders as Luz walked the two home.

A few paces from the Owl House door, the human's foot caught on a rock, causing her to stumble. As she did, the dainty white blossom fell out of her pocket to the dirt-beaten path. Her eyes caught sight of it falling, and a gasp escaped her lips. She watched in horror as the white petals of the magical flower quickly began to wilt. Frantically, the young girl picked it and cast shade back over it using her uniform cloak.

Hooty opened the door for the pair with an obnoxious squawk before Luz hurriedly rushed inside. Carefully, she pulled the flower from her pocket, her eyes scanning the room for her gray-haired mentor. The human girl laid the slightly withered blossom onto the counter next to the cauldron before calling out to her mentor. The older witch didn't respond and Luz was running low on time, so she thought it best to read the book's instructions on what to do with the flower.

Tentatively, she opened the dusty book to the page Eda had bookmarked for the energy potion. Scanning the pages quickly, she found the section marked 'instructions.' Her chocolate eyes skimmed until she spotted the name of the flower under the directions. It read:

Step 6: Carefully pluck six petals from the Fallax Solem and drop each one into the cauldron one at a time. The potion should change color if done correctly.

"Well, that's easy enough!" chimed King, who had already begun to pluck the petals from the flower. Luz hoped as she watched the petals fall into the bubbling green ooze that the withered petals would have no dire effects on the potion itself. Her worry began to soften, however, when the green ooze transformed slowly into a shiny golden color. The demon and teen let out a collective 'ooooh' of excitement as the golden brew popped and fizzed. King grabbed a small vial from a pile loosely strewn about the countertops and popped the cork lid off with his horn. With a splash of twinkling gold, the small demon filled the vial before handing it to Luz. With a laugh, she pulled the cork off of her tiny companion and plugged the vial.

Just as she placed it in her pocket, the owl lady made her way down stairs into the kitchen, her clawed hand lazily wrapped around a mug of Luz assumed was not her first glass of apple blood today. Hand on her hip and a golden fang protruding from her grin, the gray-haired witch spoke smoothly, "So, I see you found the flower. You already put it in, kiddo?"

Eagerly, the two nodded in unison with pride in their eyes.

"Well, color me impressed, kids," she spoke tenderly as she scratched underneath King's blood-red collar. She ruffled the human's dark hair affectionately before turning her eyes to the pile of empty vials, "I can see someone has grabbed their share of the potion?"

"Uhhh..."

"Eh, it's alright. The most it'll do is keep you up for a few days if you drink too much. Humans can survive that, right?"

Luz recalled her past few sleepless nights spent staring at the ceiling, thoughts consumed with golden eyes that outshone the potion and a certain pair of delicate pink lips. She shook her head clear of her thoughts and gave a sheepish grin, "Yeah, I can handle that... sortof."

The older witch shrugged and began to fill the rest of the vials with the golden potion. At this, Luz took the opportunity to glance once more at the Book of Potions before picking King up and cradling him. She scratched under his chin before checking her phone to check the time. Her eyes widened as she realized she was close to being late, so she set her tiny friend down and raced out the door, calling out rushed goodbyes over her shoulder.

Edalyn smiled as she watched her apprentice race out the door before casting her attention back to her work. She was only a quarter-way done when her placidly focused face twisted into a concerned frown as she saw a few loose, withered petals sprawled out on the floor next to her.

Luz chatted happily with Willow and Gus about her morning adventure as the three walked down the hallways to lunch. Propped against the lockers, the human noticed a familiar pair of golden eyes and dyed purple hair amongst the chattering students also on their way to eat. The witch-in-training couldn't help but feel excited as she picked up her pace to catch Amity before she disappeared into the crowd of people. Her stomach had been filled with butterflies for the past few days ever since the young witch had left Luz on her doorstep sunken to her knees from a cheek kiss.

"Amity! Over here!" She waved excitedly to catch the attention of the lavender-haired girl. The studious girl's eyes met hers, and excitement lit up in her face for a brief moment as she walked towards her human friend. She nervously held her books close to her chest when she approached Luz, her cheeks bathed in a dusty pink blush. The air between the two was tense, as neither of them had spoken to each other since post-Luz's library escapade. Both girls shuffled their feet nervously, each exceptionally aware of the new air between them. The two stared at each other a moment before quickly looking away, their eyes quickly darting to the floor.

Willow, noting the awkwardness decided to pipe up to break the silence, "Hey, Amity. How are you?"

The purple-haired witch gave a curt sigh, "Honestly, I'm exhausted. I spent all last night studying for a test today and now I think I'm too tired to pass. It's next period and I don't know what to do..."

Luz's ears picked up at this, and an excited smile spread across her face. The girl took the exhausted witch by the shoulders and bounced on her toes excitedly, "I have something that might help; I helped Eda make a potion for energy this morning! I even brought a vial to show you guys."

"Oh, okay. Does it work?" The young witch tilted her head inquisitively.

"Veamos!" she moved one hand off the girl's shoulder to pull the small glass vial from her pocket. Carefully she held it up to her golden-eyed friend, who tentatively took it from her. She sipped the vial cautiously, scrunching her nose at its overly sweet taste. Luz chuckled softly, letting her hand drift down her arm. The witch noticed and blushed deeply. Luz's chocolate eyes trailed down to her own hand before her own face matched Amity's blush. The two shifted away from each other with an awkward swiftness, a gesture not unnoticed by their plant-loving companion.

"So, uh... do you feel any different? Back in the human realm we usually just drink coffee or a Monster Energy to wake ourselves up, heh."

The lavender-haired girl shook her head 'no' slightly, "No, not yet? Maybe it takes a minute to work."

Amity paused a moment before she quirked an amused eyebrow at her human friend, "What's coffee?"

Before Luz could respond, the alarm began to ring through the halls to signal for the next class. The two glanced at each other softly and gave each other a small smile before walking their separate ways to class. Once the three students were outside of Amity's, Willow squealed excitedly and pulled at Luz's sleeve.

"What was that about, Luz?"

"Oh, boy. I- I'll tell you at lunch, okay?''

Gus' eyes lit up, "You're gonna tell us about what coffee is?"

The next few classes were torture for the young witch-in-training. Time seemed to tick by too slowly, which was unusual for the girl who was excited to spend every moment she could learning new magic. She caught herself losing herself in thoughts of lavender hair, golden eyes, and tender cheek kisses for the umpteenth time that week instead of focusing on her studies. Her stomach flipped whenever she caught her thoughts drifting or doodling little hearts on her spell notes.

Aye, Dios mio. ¿Por qué no puede ser el almuerzo todavía?

As if on queue, the lunch bell rang loudly through the halls, drifting into the classrooms. Excitedly, the young human hurried from her desk, books and notes tucked tightly in her arms. A bubbling concoction of sickening anxiety and frantic eagerness welled in Luz's stomach as she made her way to the cafeteria. Ever since the kiss, being near the lavender-haired enchantress was all the human could think about.

As she stepped through the cafeteria doors, Luz spotted the round glasses of her dear friend Willow, and caught the chipper sound of Gus' voice eagerly explaining something about the human world- presumably incorrectly. She smiled fondly at the two and cast a wave in their direction to get their attention. After plopping down on a seat next to her companions, she was greeted with a chorus of hello's that she happily returned. Before Luz could open her mouth to start a conversation, Willow piped up, a knowing tone in her voice, "Alright, what's with the weird stuff between you and Amity? Weirder than normal, I mean?"

Luz felt her cheeks begin to burn crimson red as she slumped forwards, hiding her face in her arms she held propped on top of the table. She let out a flustered groan, "I don't know, Willow. Amity is just...wow. And then she kissed me, and I don't know what to do or how to act around he-"

"She did what?" the two witches inquired in unison, both sitting up in their seats.

Luz looked up from the safety of her arms with a dreamy smile, "She kissed my cheek this weekend..."

The human recanted the adventure she and Amity had a few days prior, her face heating up at certain points in the story and her lips melting in to a goofy smile whenever she said the witch's name. Her witchy companions grinned wildly at each other before Gus quipped, "I knew it! You two are totally into each other."

"Who's into who, now?" inquired a voice behind Luz. She turned around to lock eyes with the golden ones that had been recently haunting her dreams. A wild blush spread across her face as she steadied herself from almost falling out of her seat. Willow and Gus concealed their knowing laughter behind their hands.

"Oh, uhhh... no one! No one important. Um- hi, by the way, Amity!" the brown haired girl said, stumbling over each word and clumsily leaning on her hand against the table. Amity giggled affectionately at her, a noise that brought an onslaught of butterflies to the human's chest. The witch sat down next to her, her shoulder brushing Luz's. Both of them sat awkwardly next to each other, their faces both equal shades of pink.

Gus piped up to fill the awkward silence, "So, Amity! You feelin' more awake from the potion still?"

"No, actually. It didn't make me feel any different at all." She noticed Luz's demeanor sadden slightly, so she grabbed her hand and squeezed it in reassurance, "I'm positive I passed, though. So don't blame yourself."

Luz smiled softly at her companion before frowning bemusedly, "I do wonder why it didn't work, though. It changed color like the potion said it was supposed to..."

"Did it happen to be from the Book of Potions Eda has at the Owl House that you found the instructions for the potion?" Willow inquired. Luz gave a nod of agreement, to which the witch responded with an eager smile. She pulled a book out of her bag, "I have that exact book! I had been reading it to see if there was a potion I could use on my plants at home to make them a bit stronger. The Fallax Solem energy potion, right?"

After an affirming nod, Willow quickly flipped through the pages of her book before landing on the energy potion, "You sure you got all the ingredients exactly correct? You didn't leave anything out, right?"

"I only put in the flower petals."

"The flower wasn't withered at all, right?"

Luz grinned sheepishly, "A littleeee..."

"Oh, Luz... When the flower is exposed to sunlight, it changes the magical properties."

Amity's voice chimed in, thick with concern, "So what exactly did I drink this morning?"

After a moment of flipping through the pages, Willow began to giggle after reading a small blip of fine print. Between giggles she managed to explain, ''Amity, Luz gave you a love potion!"

"A WHAT?" the two other girls shouted in unison.

"A love potion! It supposedly makes you fall in love with the first person you see after taking it."

Luz and Amity turned to look at each other with wide eyes and scarlet faces. The two chuckled awkwardly as they scooted away from each other.

"It doesn't seem to have worked, though. Amity hasn't had any change in demeanor this morning, it seems." Luz relaxed a little at this, but couldn't shake the feeling of slight disappointment that rose within her chest.

Unlike Luz, Amity understood exactly why she didn't feel any different towards her human companion. They looked back at each other with shy eyes. Luz smiled awkwardly at her friend, "That's good, heh. It would have been quite the...situation, huh?"

Amity nodded slowly, hiding behind her lavender bangs, "Uh, yeah. It would've."

Without thinking, the human reached forward to brush the hair out of her face affectionately. She rested her palm against the other girls cheek, staring at her with the same wide, adoring eyes that Amity was sure almost made her faint a few days before. The two were lost in each other's gaze as the witch placed her hand over Luz's gently. Willow and Gus watched in amusement as goofy smiles etched their way across their friends' faces.

The splitting sound of the warning bell interrupted the girls' trance. Curtly, the two scooted away from each other. Hesitantly, they began to walk towards the door to class. As Luz made her way toward her first afternoon class, she began to think she should talk to Eda about the love potion.

The rest of the day went as slowly as the morning had. During her potions class, Luz doodled pictures of Amity in her journal and scribbled little hearts on her schoolwork. When the day came to a close, the human girl rushed to the entrance stairs in hopes of catching Amity before she left. Just as she had hoped, the witch she hoped to find was making her way down the final few stairs as Luz reached the first few. Hesitantly, she called out to her, "Amity! Wait up!"

The other girl turned around to face her, cheeks rosy once she realized who had said her name. Luz sped down the stairs to catch up to her. Amity shuffled her feet nervously, "Hey, Luz. What's up?"

"Oh, uh.. Can I walk you home?"

Amity nodded eagerly before Luz spoke again, "I just wanted to say sorry about the whole potion thing today."

The golden-eyed girl's blush grew deeper as she stumbled over her words, "N-no worries! It didn't do anything, so it's okay! No harm, no foul, right?"

"Yeah, I guess. I just felt bad that I could've hurt you or put that spell on you on accident, ya know?" she nudged the witch with her elbow playfully as the two began to walk away from the school. The other girl nodded curtly and remained quiet as the two meandered together. They padded along in silence for a while, both swooning internally at the opportunity. A few blocks from the Blight mansion, Luz jumped slightly in surprise as their hands brushed together. Taking it as an opportunity, the human nervously grabbed Amity's hand and intertwined their fingers. Luz felt the other girl tense in surprise, but eventually squeezed her hand softly after relaxing.

They walked the rest of the way to Amity's house with their hands locked together and their shoulders brushing, their faces adorned with lovesick grins and strawberry-red blush. They came to stop at the steps of the mansion where the witch had kissed Luz a few days before. Amity turned to her companion and shot her a soft smile and tucked her hair nervously behind her ear. Hesitantly, she let go of the human girl's hand and pulled an empty vial out of her pocket.

With a smile she held it out to her; a small droplet of that mornings golden potion swished around the bottom at the movement. She spoke softly, not daring to meet Luz's eyes, "Even if this had worked, I don't think being in love with you would be such a terrible thing at all..."

Before the brown-eyed girl could sputter out a response, the lavender-haired witch had once again left her a blushing mess on the stairs as she retreated into her home. Well, now she really needed to talk to Eda.

"What do you mean, you already knew I made a love potion?" the human girl wildly exclaimed. She hadn't been back at the Owl House for more than ten minutes before her grey-haired mentor confronted her about the potion going wrong.

"You left some wilted petals on the floor this morning, that's when I realized this potion hadn't turned out as intended. Anyone who reads the fine print on these things can see what the magical properties will change to," Eda said with a smirk at her apprentice. Luz frowned at her, unamused. The older woman shifted on her red heels, placing a hand on her hip, "Ya didn't give that potion to anyone, did you?"

"Well, you see...," she rubbed her arm bashfully, "I gave it to someone thinking it would help her wake up for her test. But it didn't. Then Willow told us what it actually was, but that didn't really matter because the potion didn't work at all."

"What do you mean, it didn't work?" the owl lady cocked an inquisitive eyebrow at her pupil.

"Amity didn't act any different towards me after she drank it! The potion didn't make her fall in love with me, Eda."

The witch cackled in amusement, "Well of course it didn't work! The potion can't make you fall in love with someone you're already falling in love with."

Luz stared blankly at her mentor, trying to process what she had said.

Oh. OH-

The girl ran a shaky hand through her short, brown hair as a wildly stupid grin spread across her face. It made sense now; the way Amity acted around her, the kiss, the blushing, the hand-holding, the butterflies that erupted in Luz's chest every time her eyes caught Amity's lovely golden ones, and the stupid things that they made each other do were all just signs of a pining that Luz had hoped was requited. And it was.

"I guess I have to talk to Amity now, huh?"

The next morning, Luz approached the steps of the Blight mansion with a fast-beating heart. She had woken up well before dawn and had hardly slept an hour the night before. She spent hours thinking about how to tell Amity how she felt, how to tell Amity that she knew. She decided that the best way to do that was return a kiss. Hesitantly, the young human knocked on the large wooden door and waited for an abomination butler to greet her. Instead, the door opened to reveal the witch Luz had come to see.

"Luz? What are you doing here?"

"I... I need to give you something."

Amity stepped outside, a confused smile etching its way onto her face, "I hope it's not another potion, Noceda."

Luz stepped close to her, taking the other girl's hands into her own. The human swallowed the nerves that hung thick in her throat as she placed a kiss to Amity's cheek. It was soft and quick, but it brought the most fiery blush to the pale witch's face that Luz had ever seen. She smiled shyly at the girl as she stepped back a bit from her, their hands still intertwined.

"When I got home yesterday," she explained to the other girl, who stared at her dumbfounded, "Eda explained to me why a love potion wouldn't work on someone."

She heard Amity swallow hard, but continued to speak anyway, "She said it's because a love potion doesn't work on someone who's already falling in love."

"O-oh. I'm dreaming, aren't I?" Amity asked, her voice a few octaves higher than normal.

The human shook her head and laughed affectionately, "You know how I said I do stupid things around you, Blight?"

The witch shook her head softly in agreement as Luz reached up to cup her cheek, just as she had the day before. With her other hand, she pulled out a small vial of an all-too-familiar golden elixir. Slowly, she opened it and drank from it until the last drop of dazzling potion drained from the bottle. With wide eyes, Amity watched attentively as she waited for the human to begin reacting to the potion. But nothing changed.

The human smiled fondly at the girl as she watched the realization dawn on her, "Was that too stupid?"

Amity nodded as she felt happy tears prick at the corners of her eyes. The two girls giggled as Luz pressed her forehead to Amity's.

"Can I do something potentially stupid, now?" the witch asked, to which Luz let out a hum of agreement. Amity cupped both hands on either side of the human's face before kissing her softly on the lips. After a moment of shock, Luz closed her eyes and returned the kiss as they both enjoyed the taste of a golden Fallax Solem syrup dancing on their lips. Slowly, the two broke away. They stared into each other's eyes fondly as dawn slowly began to bathe the sky.

"That wasn't stupid at all..."
