Chapter 8– The Sickly Sixes part 3
They waited until nightfall to check on the camp. They had purposely left Una behind in the camper. Sarah took apart her satellite phone and then put it in front of her with a bowl of snacks for her to pick through saying that that would keep her distracted until they were back.
The Ingen team had picked a clearing in the jungle to set up their camp and my god did they have a lot of stuff. Really good stuff too. Ian had joked with Eddie that they should borrow Ingen's phone cause their satellite dish was much larger then the one Eddie had.
He could see Peter Ludlow milling around the camp, pretending he was on safari no doubt. They had all their specimens in cages, they had at least 50 Marlboro men on their team too, all of them with guns like that was going to save them with a T-Rex showed up.
They clearly needed a plan because this, could not happen.
"Are they really thinking about building another park here? After what you said happened at the last one?" Kelly asked.
She had wanted to come and they couldn't talk her out of it. But Ian didn't really want to leave Kelly alone. This island was a walking death trap, he didn't want something to happen to her while he was gone. Nor did he want to leave her with the little wild child.
He wasn't really worried about the new girl though, Sarah was certain that she had been living on this island for a long time, most likely for her whole life. She'd probably be fine.
Ian shook his head. "They're taking these animals out of here. Back to the mainland."
And that too was a very, very stupid idea.
Nick, however, was fiddling with his backpack, and eventually cleared his throat to stop the burgeoning argument before it could begin.
"I think I should tell you. Hammond told me these people might show up. He thought we'd be finished by the time they started, but if they weren't he did send up a backup plan."
He was holding a pair of bolt cutters, but Sarah still asked: "What back up plan?"
"Me."
Ian thought that going into that camp was a stupid idea, but they couldn't be talked out of it. So Ian and Eddie and Kelly went back to the camper so he could try to call the boat back so he and Kelly could leave. Hopefully he could convince Nick and Sarah and Eddie to come with him, but he had a feeling he wouldn't be able to.
Sarah and Nick, however snuck into that camp while Peter Ludlow gave a speech about the amphitheatre that they were planning to put all these dinosaurs in in San Diego. It was the original plan John Hammond had designed and actually started on before he switched to the island idea.
And he was mid way through his video chat with his investors when the freed dinosaurs crashed through his tent and cut him off.
Chaos descended, dinosaurs charged and destroyed everything they could find. Which included their cars and satellites.
And as that chaos descended Sarah lost nick.

Night fall descended upon the island and Rela, with Roc went back to where the biped had been making camp with Una.
They had left Una there longer than Rela would have wanted, only because every time they went to collect her she was still showing signs of the biped illness.
They wanted her fully well, before they took her back. Simply because if she were to get sick again because they took her back too early, they wouldn't be able to drop her off again.
She had gone, simply with Roc, hoping for an easy pick up. That they'd show up, get their hatchling and leave.
But they got to the camp and no one was there.
Not Una or the biped they had left her with. There wasn't any sign of any of the new bipeds being in the area either. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not, but since they seemed to be collecting dinosaurs for some reason she was going to go with good.
The nest was deserted, all scents old.
Roc turned to her. "Where do you think she is?"
Rela turned, fire burned somewhere in the jungle. Not a forest fire, a biped-made fire. The nest where they took the captive dinosaurs.
"Do you think they have her there?"
Well. If they did. They weren't going to like the pack coming to look for their missing hatchling.
"Call the others," she ordered, heading towards the fire, while behind her Roc brayed the call for the pack.

As soon as Ian got back to the trailer, he went straight to attempting to get a hold of the boat. What he got was a very angry woman yelling at him in Spanish, looking for Enrique.
Yeah that was fun.
While Ian struggled to call the boat, Kelly was playing with Una. Or at least showing her things.
Una had already put the satellite phone back together before they got there. When he and Kelly returned she thrust the phone back up at them, and then scampered off. She had clearly gone through the snacks as every single one had a bite taken out of it, wrapper and all by the looks of it. She had been going through the cabinets too. Almost everything she had out had a bite mark of sorts in it, which means she had been tasting things.
Kelly assumed that meant that she was hungry.
"Here, this you can eat," Kelly said handing her a rice crispy treat.
Una took it from her, looked at it, rubbed her fingers over it, and then bit into it, wrapper and all. She let out a little yelp and then spit it onto the floor.
She jumped up onto the counter with the agility of a house cat and then began to touch everything she could get her hands on.
Kelly picked up the rice crispy treat with a chuckle. "No, no, you have to unwrap it."
Kelly showed her how to do it and then offered the unwrapped treat. Una took it, sniffed it, took another bite and then spit it right back out making noises of disgust as she did.
Una then decided to pick up things and show Kelly. Kelly would then tell her what it was like the girl understood what she was saying. Which Ian was certain she didn't.
But then something worse happened. The door to the camper banged opened and Sarah came in. She was clearly in panic mode and something, he wasn't sure what, was outside wailing and getting closer.
She took Ian's shocked stare and winced.
"Ian no lectures," she said, she then pushed Kelly behind her. "Honey stand back, don't get too close." She then glanced back to Una who was crouched on that counter, ramrod straight. "Una… stay there. Okay? Stay. Stay!"
Una didn't say anything she just stared. Sarah turned to Ian no doubt to ask to grab her, but Ian was too busy watching Nick bring a wailing, screeching dinosaur into their camper.
What was worse was that he recognized it too.
As Nick got by, he became more and more sure that it was a baby T-Rex. Goddamn why had they brought one of those in here.
"Aw, honey, no, no," he cried but Sarah and Nick ignored him.
"Ian it's hurt!" he shouted.
Una was standing now, barking and trilling and making these weird screeching noises pointing at it and then at Sarah. Sarah, despite Nick trying to put it on a table for them to examine, moved to make sure that she was in between Una and this creature.
Nick got it on the table, they were struggling to muzzle it. Kelly was getting agitated, just like Una. The baby Rex was clearly hurt, cause Ian could see the blood, and it was commendable that Sarah wanted to help but this was definitely going to bring the adults to their area and Ian didn't want to be around when that happened.
Even Kelly wanted to leave, wanted to go somewhere safe.
"Other animals are going to hear this," she kept crying to him. "Please dad I want to get out of here, I want to go somewhere else."
Ian tried to tell her that he was trying to call the boat which would take them to the mainland but she meant right now. Right at that moment. Well, he could, he knew a good place to take her too.
And then a secondary wail was heard.
A complete carbon copy of the baby Rex's.
Everyone in the cabin stopped, the creature stopped it's wailing. And then everyone turned to where the sound had come from, even the Rex.
It was Una. She was sitting on the counter, eyes impossibly wide, head cocked to the side staring down at the baby Rex as it stared back at her.
Eventually it made the wail again and Una once again answered it, mimicking it's cry.
She then hopped off of the counter and crossed to the Rex. She pulled a chair over so she could stand up and face it. Her hands went to it's snout and just pet it, soft and reassuring like.
It wailed again and she copied it once more. Then she rested her head against his. Forehead to forehead.
The wails stopped, they turned into soft exhaling grunts and Una copied those too.
The Rex stopped thrashing and everyone just stood there watching this happen. In complete and utter shock.
"Is she…?" Nick started but Sarah shushed him. Because she was.
Una was talking to the baby T-Rex.
"We have to sedate him now while he's distracted," Sarah said. "And we'll have to muzzle him to keep him from biting."
Nick wasn't going to move to muzzle him until the Rex was sedated, which took no time at all with Sarah at the helm.
The problem was the second they injected it, it started crying again. It snapped at Una no longer trusting her so Sarah took Una and handed her to Ian who was going to take Kelly over to the High Hide with Eddie.
She hadn't wanted to go but eventually Ian got her to jog along side him in the rain as they headed for Eddie.
When they got there Eddie kept asking for some kind of update on what was going on but that didn't matter. So Ian with Una and Kelly got into the High Hide with Eddie and they rose up into the tree, above the branches, way above the canopy.
The second it stopped, Una tried to climb over the railing. Eddie had to grab onto her. He pulled her back in, put her feet on the cage ground and then let her go. The second he didn't have a hold on her, she jumped right up to try to climb over, chittering and barking in her strange way, no doubt trying to tell them something.
The second time Eddie grabbed her he put her back down and then put his hands on her shoulders to keep her from touching anything or trying to climb over again.
Ian got to spend some time comforting is daughter who was clearly panicking.
"There see, we're safe. Like Sarah said, the plants make it so the animals don't know we're here."
"You're just trying to make me feel better," Kelly aid. "I remember those stories you told."
Unfortunate. He had really hoped his daughter would never be in anything similar. But here they were.
"Oh no, this is nothing like that. We're in a completely different situation now."
"AH! She bit me," Eddie said and the night air was filled with Una's braying laughter. She went to jump again, grabbing the top of the railing and half getting up before Ian grabbed her.
"No. Stay. No jumping."
Una blinked those big blue eyes of her and then just sat down on the floor.
Well. At least she knew the word no.
There was a massive roar and suddenly Una was up on her feet again, chittering things at them this time. She kept pointing at the near-by tree as if she meant to jump to it. Ian immediately tugged her away from the side and sat her down again. She huffed as if she understood immediately what that meant which was: don't fucking move.
The problem was that the Rexes was coming for their kid, and their kid was in a small camper with his girlfriend and Nick. That camper would probably not survive a Rex. Lord knows two electric cars hadn't.
"Eddie, is there anyway to contact the trailer?"
Eddie handed him a phone that was connected to the controls and Ian waited for someone to pick up. Which no one did.
"No answer. What a surprise. How do I get down?"
Eddie immediately handed him something else. "Tie this belt around you."
"Where are you going dad? Stay here. Come on. Please, stay here," Kelly cried but Ian couldn't. He had to warn Sarah.
Eddie handed him a rope and began to explain. "Squeeze this rope Hard. The harder you squeeze, the slower you go. If you don't squeeze at all… well…"
Yeah, he got it. And all through that explanation, Una was barking and Kelly was struggling to keep him from leaving, he was surprised he heard it at all.
"Please dad. Please stay here."
"Honey, the queen? My goddess?"
He paused and eventually she added: "Your inspiration?"
"Now you're talking." He then climbed over the edge. God it was a long drop. "I'm coming right back, I give you my word."
"You never keep your word!" she shouted and his heart hurt even though it was true.
He had nothing to say so he just jumped, and completely forgot to squeeze.
So, he simply crashed down to the ground below.

Una's chittering made her feel better. Una was a great distraction. Kelly had decided to sit down on the cage floor with her and try to teach her new words.
She had learned Kelly's name. She said it funny. "Kehl-E" but it was close enough. She had learned Ian, whom she called "I-han". Sarah was. "Sar-ha". Eddie was "Eh-dee," and Nick was just plain old Nick. She had no problem with that one, though she did pronounce that ending K very harshly.
And with each word she learned, with each good job she got Una would laugh in that strange excited way of hers that made Kelly smile too.
But then she went quiet. Completely and utterly still. Her eyes did that wide thing again.
Then her head just turned, starting doing that swivel thing. She then pointed to the trees and began to grunt. These low chuffs of insistent warning.
Kelly and Eddie could only watch as the trees shook and creaked as something massive moved beneath them. Birds were taking flight and Una suddenly went quiet watching as whatever it was crashed beneath them heading for the trailer.
They watched. Horrified. Watched as they reached the trailer, knocked a car off the cliff, and then basically surrounded that trailer.
Eddie tried calling the camper, but just like when her dad had done it no one had picked up.
They couldn't really see much, but Kelly was freaking out. She couldn't hep it. That was her dad.
Una however was chittering again. She kept eyeing large base of the tree and the top of the canopy attached to their High Hide. She took turns tugging on Kelly's shirt and then Eddie's sleeve, but both were just watching the adult Rexes as they stared down the camper.
But eventually they just seemingly walked away.
Eddie called again and this time someone actually picked up.
"Hi, yeah, they're heading back to the jungle." He paused for a moment listening to whoever was on the other side. "She's doing okay, here she is."
And then the phone was being handed to her.
"Hello?" she asked breathlessly.
"Kelly are you okay?"
It was her dad.
"Yeah, I'm good," she said trying to mask her hyperventilating.
"Stay there. Don't move. I'll be right back up. Understand?"
"Yeah, I understand."
Except the second he hung up the phone they could see it, the T-Rex's turning back around. The largest of the two rammed into the trailer so hard it rolled twice.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,"
Una took the distraction to climb up onto the railing, grab the top bar that attached to the canopy and pulled herself up before Eddie could stop her.
"Ah shit," he said but he couldn't get a hold of her and though he called her she didn't come back. And her chittering had stopped. "I gotta help them. Stay here, I'll be right back."
He too put on a belt, hooked himself up and then rappelled down, just like her dad had done, except he didn't crash, he got down and was fine.
He didn't run though, like her dad did, he took the other car.
Again, because of the trees she couldn't quite see what happened but she was figuring it wasn't good at all, just judging by the sound alone.
She was starting to panic cause the trailers went all the way over the edge, she couldn't see Eddie, and the T-Rexes took a very long time to leave.
Then she had no idea what she was going to do next. Was she alone? Did they need help?
And if she was alone, how was she supposed to get down?
Then there came the sound of chittering, Una's sounds.
Her little head popped out, or more aptly hung down. She was clearly on top of the High Hide. She kept making her noises at Kelly who was trying very hard not to cry.
"I don't understand you."
Una blinked her eyes, tried chittering a few more times, but when that didn't work she said: "Come. Come."
She climbed out and up like she had seen Una do and then followed her, up into the branches. When they got into the branches, Una showed her how to get down, which involved her climbing into a completely different tree. This wasn't that hard either, because the branches intersected with the original tree's branches.
They got all the way back to the ground and Kelly turned in the direction she was supposed to be walking, but Una hadn't turned with her.
She turned around to see that the girl had basically gone into a defensive position. She was hunched, her feet set firmly apart and her hands tucked in. Her head was swivelling and she seemed to be just… staring.
"Una, what's the matter?" Kelly asked, much like when someone asked a dog what it was doing.
Una suddenly backed away, right into Kelly, hissing in what was clearly a threatening manner. Not directed at Kelly of course but at something else. Something coming towards them.
And then Kelly saw the lights.
