Chapter 11 – The Sickly Sixes part 6

Malcolm kept his head down until everyone was gone, until he was left with only one T-Rex in that clearing. When it was distracted, Malcolm got himself out and into the trees. The plan was to try and find Kelly, Sarah and Nick. Oh and Una, though he had a feeling that the little wild child was probably fine on her own.

He got only a few steps past the trees when the little girl dropped out of the trees and in front of him. Malcolm had been so startled he jumped back, tripped over his own feet and ended back in the mud.

Malcom looked up and saw the little girl staring down at him. He got up quickly and reached out for her but she danced out of the way.

No! He did not have time for this. There was literally a Rex just a few feet away from them, they needed to get as far away from that place as possible.

"No," she said. The word she said best. "Come, come."

She waved to him, clearly meaning for him to follow her. So he did.

She led him through the trees, noting that she seemed to be following some sort of path, except she wasn't taking him directly on it, but moving through the bushes beside it.

Eventually they came across a waterfall.

He could sort of hear people, though he had no idea where they were, and he could definitely see blood and a few left-over limbs in the water. Una waved him towards the falling water and he realized what she was trying to say.

They were behind the waterfall.

Ian jumped through the water, heard the screams of worry from the people hidden inside but once they realized it was just him, they calmed down. Except for Kelly who screamed: "Dad!" at him.

As he hugged her, he thanked Nick for getting them this far and the man just nodded.

Still Ian was going to be eternally grateful.

They all came out from behind the waterfall, where they found Una standing off the beaten path looking all sorts of nervous while looking around at the trees.

"Where do we go now?" Kelly asked and then Una started bouncing and barking at them, waving her hands clearly wanting to lead them somewhere.

She led them through the trees until they came to a field of long grass. As they ran, they noticed that, while she seemed to know where she was going, she kept looking back over her shoulder. She was clearly looking for something, or worried that something was following them.

They stopped when they got to the tall grass, or well Una stopped, the other's kept going. Sarah had to double back and grabbed her to get her to follow them.

When they came to a stop it was because Nick was telling them to stop. He had found Ajay's bag, which was very good because he had all the codes they'd need to call for a helicopter. Though it did make him wonder why the hell it was there, in the tall grass, on the ground… without Ajay? But they were only stopped for a few seconds when the screaming in the distance reached their ears and they suddenly understood why.

The other survivors were getting attacked by something. Again.

Ian had them all shush so he could listen. That was when they heard the strange clicking growling that was around them.

They couldn't tell where it was coming from or what it was, but Una, Una seemed to know it.

She sort of gasped and then answered the sound, clicking and trilling back. As soon as she did the sounds changed. A screech was heard, and then they could hear movement rustling through the tall grass.

They all started running again, off of the path that had been made by the previous survivors. Nick had to stoop down and pick up Una because once again she hadn't wanted to run.

They all ran heading for the trees again, but what they didn't know was that the trees weren't flat lands. They lead to a hill that no one was expected, so they all fell over it, sliding all the way down to the bottom where they found themselves surrounded by carcasses.

Half eaten, half decomposed, a graveyard of dinosaurs. Lord they didn't want to figure out what had been leaving these there.

They got up to try and keep going but Ian's bad leg gave out.

"I see the structures there," Nick said showing them Ajay's bag that had all the info they needed in it. They really were lucky to have found it. "They said the communications center is in the operations building. So, I'll just get in there and send the radio call. See you there."

"Wait for us," Sarah called to his retreating back.

"Every second counts. If you think you can keep up, you're welcome to try."

Ian stood right away to try and follow but his leg was clearly paining him so Kelly and Sarah forced him to sit back down. Sarah was going to help him massage the pain out of it but then Una brayed again. Immediately Sarah turned and clapped a hand over her mouth. In the distance came the braying of others. In response to her or because of her they didn't know.

"Shh," she said. "Quiet Una."

Una blinked her eyes confused, but she was quiet until Ian was ready to walk again. They were almost home, this was almost over.

They could almost taste freedom, and though they didn't know why Una was suddenly so talkative and problematic they figured, so long as she didn't attract a predator to them, they'd take her along when they eventually left.

Eventually once Ian was feeling stronge0,r he got up and they began to walk towards the compound. They had to walk through many bodies before they got to the front gate. Sarah had to hold onto Una's hand tightly the whole time so the little girl didn't wander, cause she was trying to.

As they walked Una continued to make this high-pitched whine sound, like she was worried about where they were and where they were going. She kept looking over her shoulder and making those strange clicking sounds, like she was talking to something, or, more aptly, attempting to warn them about something.

Ian decided that the best option was to just keep going, as quickly as possible to get away from whatever it was that worrying Una.

They made it to the village and Ian had to fight the urge not to stop in his tracks. It's like a little abandoned village. All the buildings had been reclaimed by the jungle, they stood silent and empty. It was eerie and creepy and he didn't like it, but this was where they'd find the way out, so that was all that mattered.

What they had to do was find Nick.

So Ian started calling for him. In the same way that he had teased him for when this had all started. Back when their team was in tact, Ingen's secondary team had showed up, and they were still in the ohh and aww stage.

Oh, how he wanted to go back to that point again.

"Nick. Nick Van Owen," he called out into the dark and silent little village. They were heading for the main building, but they still had some time before they'd get there, they were still walking through all the other little buildings that made up this compound.

They even had their own gas station. Say what you want about Ingen, but they were definitely prepared. Not that it had helped them in the end.

There was a sudden screech and when Ian turned around this giant five-foot lizard jumped out from behind an abandoned car and landing right on Sarah's back.

The thing had to have been as tall as Sarah, it was all green with lines of blue down it's back, with flecks of something across it's snout. Could have been freckles, could have been blood. Either way Ian didn't want to get close enough to it to figure it out.

Sarah hit the ground as the creature, no doubt a velociraptor, grabbed her pack and shook it back and forth.

Kelly had let go of Sarah's hand long ago, so it was only Una who was taken down with Sarah.

Ian grabbed Kelly right away and dragged her away, not sure how he was going to get Sarah out of this. But Una, however, just stood up and started making her clicking and barking noises at it.

The raptor on Sarah dropped the backpack immediately and focused it's beady gaze onto Una. It stared at her while Una jumped up and down and made her clicking noises at it.

The raptor took one of its feet off of Sarah's back, no doubt preparing to attack Una, but Sarah elbowed it in the face and knocked it off of her. She got up quickly, grabbed Una and then rushed to where Ian was standing with Kelly.

The raptor followed them though, moving slowly towards them until they were cornered. Pinned between a wall and a completely different broken down car.

And Una kept on barking and clicking, more insistently this time.

Yes, he got it, there was a raptor, he finally understood what she was trying to warn them about. Raptors in the area, yes, he got it, now he just needed her to shut up!

He grabbed a stick and began bagging on a barrier separating away from the rest of the group so the raptor's focus was on him. It watched him, just long enough for Sarah to pull Una and Kelly away, dragging them towards a little shed like facility that at the very least had a door.

But the second they got around the car the raptor no longer cared about Ian and the noise he was making.

It let out a screech and then rushed forward, hot on Sarah and the children's heels. They had a better head start though, so Sarah got the door closed before the raptor got to them. In fact the raptor bounced right off.

By then other raptors had come into the compound. Though these ones were a redish color. Where they the same pack?

Did that matter?

One went to the door to help the raptor that was shoulder checking the door and then started to dig at the door to try to find any way in.

And then another raptor showed up, this one turning it's head towards Ian and deciding that he was going to be it's target. Ian tried to run away, he ran first into the gas station, but he shut the door and the raptor jumped through the window. He pried the door from the frame, which was shockingly easy, and held it up like that would save him from the raptor's next attack.

All it did was knock him back through a different window.

Ian got back up and raced back to the car, shutting the door just as the raptor tackled it. As it was trying to find a way in, shoving it's nose through a hole in the glass that it kept making bigger, Ian glanced to he door that was just across from him. He could run it if there weren't two raptors in front of it.

Jesus, what was he going to do now?

Sarah got that door shut just in time. But she knew that it would only hold them back for so long.

Raptors were smart. She full believed that they would find a way in there. Not to mention, Ian had told her horror stories, second hand stories he got from Alan Grant as Ian had not met with the raptors on the original island. All about how the raptors learned how to open doors.

Maybe the wild ones wouldn't, but the others had managed to figure it out, these ones might be able to too.

Sarah didn't have to grab Kelly to pull her away from the door, but she had to hold onto Una who was still chittering and clicking and getting more and more louder by the second.

Except she didn't look panicked. She didn't look scared. She looked annoyed.

They needed to find a way out of there. Sarah turned and saw that the back for the shed was just wood. They could pry the board apart and dig their way out.

She exchanged glances with Kelly and the two of them rushed to the back of the shed to start digging. They were at it for only a few seconds and then Sarah remembered Una.

She hadn't come with them, and she wasn't making her clicking noises anymore.

Sarah turned around and found that Una was at the door where the raptors, were starting to try and dig their way in.

She was on her tippy toes trying to reach the doorknob. Struggling to turn it so she could open the door. Sarah rushed to her, to try and stop her but Una figured it out. She turned the knob just as the raptors hit that door and it flew open, knocking Una to the ground. Kelly and Sarah screamed, even Una screamed.

The raptor at the door, this massive green speckled raptor, bent over her. But it didn't bite her. In fact, Una's screams stopped being screams and started being squeals as the raptor practically butted it's head against her.

One side then the other over and over.

Eventually Una, who had been on her knees all this time as the Raptor stood above her, tilted her head back to look up at it.

And then she made the noises again. The chittering yips and clicks to which the raptor responded to right away.

Sarah watched all of this, her mouth dropping in utter surprise. Kelly, who had been hugging her, asked: "What's happening?"

But Sarah understood now.

This wasn't hunting behaviour. They were searching.

Just like the Rexes had been.

The Raptors were searching for their young.

Una was a raptor.

Una got up to her feet, her little hands running up and down the raptor's snout and along the side of it's face. The raptor bent over to let her do it too, so this was something they did often.

This had to be Una's mother.

All the while Una twittered and barked at the raptor, no doubt telling her mummy everything.

Then she let go and rushed back to Sarah. Taking a hold of her hand she dragged Sarah to the raptor and the had Sarah put her hand out, as if waiting for the raptor to put it's head to it, or in this case bite it.

"Mummy," she said pointing to the raptor. Right, so Sarah was right, this was her mother. Then Una turned to the raptor and barked something at her. No doubt an introduction.

Sarah just stood there, too afraid to move, too afraid to lower her arm.

The raptor regarded her with its cold amber eyes and then very slowly extended it's neck, bowing it's head to her hand.

It's snout met her palm, Sarah could feel the warm exhale of it's breathe against her skin, and then it was sensation was gone. It straightened, angled it's head down towards Una and then barked.

Una barked back and then turned to Sarah.

"Biiieeee" she said to her and then she and the raptor both turned away.

The rest of the pack, all red in color, came forward, each taking a turn to bow their heads to Una and give her a sniff over before licking her, each in different places.

And then they too just walked away, disappearing once more into the jungle, just as the whirl of the helicopter blades began to echo over the compound.

Peter Ludlow didn't have a lot of time between getting back from Isla Sorna and having a T-Rex rampage through San Diego.

Roland had managed to tag and sedate the T-Rex buck, and then they went back for the baby, choosing to transport the adult male by ship, but the baby by jet. The plan was to open up the Jurassic Park location in San Diego, starting with the adult T-Rex and it's baby.

Except that was not what happened.

The T-Rex had gotten loose on the cargo ship and killed everyone before someone managed to get it back into the cargo hold. Since there were no survivors they figured whoever managed to get it down there succumbed to their injuries.

Ian and Sarah had to go and get the baby and lure the adult male back to the boat. They had left he baby in the cargo hold, hoping to get the adult inside, tranq it and then shut the container again.

Problem was, Peter Ludlow wanted the baby so he went down into the cargo hold to get it.

He did not come back out.

Now there was a few days between them returning from Isla Sorna and that incident, so while Peter managed to tell a few people about Una, they didn't have proof or confirmation, as it all died when he did.

About two weeks after the incident with the T-Rex both Ian and Sarah got a call from the new Ingen director asking about the rumors about a little human girl living on the island, taken in by the dinosaurs.

Both Ian and Sarah had the same answer.

No. They had no idea what they were talking about.

They both figured it would be safer for everyone in that company, and Una herself, if Ingen never found out about her.

What they didn't know, until he reached out that was, was that Roland Tembo had felt the same. Had done the same.

They talked it over briefly. Told Roland what she really was, and were decently surprised at his lack of surprise. To him it made complete sense that she had been taken in by what was considered the smartest dinosaur on that island.

They ended up agreeing to keep an eye on the news, and trade any updates they might get about Una, if they were to get them.

But for now.

Una was safe and so where they.

So all was good.

Well… for them anyway.
