He had lost him…. Rabastan had lost the Dark Lord. He had followed the Dark Lord into the wizarding quarters of Godric's Hollow, but Rabastan blinked and his lord had disappeared. He stood, idle, for 5 minutes now, wondering if the Dark Lord had just walked into someone's wards, or if it could be that, paranoid as ever, the Dark Lord had told the inner circle he was going to Godric's Hollow and then simply apparated away to another location.
As the minutes passed, Rabastan started to consider just going home. His brother and sister-in-law were working on a plan to find Alice and Frank Longbottom for their lord and they had a few locations that seemed promising, and he was hoping they would let him participate. He wouldn't mind getting his hands on that pretty little Alice, preferably with Frank watching.
He smirked to himself and got ready to apparate when he was suddenly knocked off his feet by a strong magical force, almost an explosion. He stood up and turned his attention to the source. He could swear that the house before him had not been there a minute ago. He jumped to his feet, wondering if that was where the Dark Lord had gone. He ran into the ruins, wondering what had happened to his master as he entered. The first sight he was greeted with was James Potter laid on the floor, his glass-like eyes open but not moving, glasses slightly askew, and no wand in sight. He tutted slightly, "What a waste of blood," and from what he'd heard the boy was very good at the transfiguration. He would've served the cause well.
Rabastan walked toward the body to straighten the glasses on its nose and smirked at the blood traitor's misfortune. Next, he made his way up the stairs and turned the corner to the room whence came the explosive noise and impact of magical energy. The door, now hanging off one hinge, had the name 'Harry' written on it. A child's room?
He pushed the door and it groaned as it swung open, and Rabastan met a sight he could not explain: There was the dead body of the mudblood, the Dark Lord's robes and his wand but not his body, and strangest of all, a baby not much older than one sitting in a crib behind the mudblood's body, alive and reaching for his mother with tears slowly rolling down his face…. With a scar… in the exact shape of the wand movement of the Killing Curse.
Rabastan slowly made his way to the child until he stood over him. The child looked up at him with his big green eyes, a trembling bottom lip, and messy black hair. Rabastan lifted his wand… he had to finish the Dark Lord's work…. If his Master had wanted this child dead, he must have had a good reason.
At the sight of the raised wand, the child started to wail, and Rabastan had to lower his wand to cover his ears from the shrieks. He glared at the baby, wondering how best to silence it. He looked around the room until his eyes landed on four plush toys, each shaped like a different animal, and he grabbed the two that looked like a dog and a stag as he could not see how a wolf and a rat might calm a baby down.
"Hey look, kid. It's a dog."
The baby opened its eyes and looked at the two plush toys held out to him and the tears slowed down.
"Pafoo…. Pon…?"
Rabastan sighed " Yeah sure kid." He handed the toys to the kid, who clutched them to his chest like a lifeline. His bottom lip still quivered, but he was no longer crying. Suddenly an idea struck.
Rabastan mulled over his idea… it was insane, but if it were to work…. Oh….the benefits would well outweigh the costs. Rabastan smirked at the boy and looked around the room for a baby bag. Finding it, he picked up the maroon bag and sneered at the golden lions. He opened the zipper to find it already filled with diapers, an empty bottle and other things Rabastan did not recognise in there. He started going around the room, throwing in anything that might look useful. Finally opening a drawer, he took out a few clothes, just enough to get through the decided to leave most of the Muggle clothes, as they were unworthy of a child that was going to be seen with him. He had already decided he would go buy more for the baby later. He finally took the plush of the rat and the wolf as he had seen the reaction the child had to the dog and stag, and assumed he loved the other two just as much. In a split send decision, he also took his lords robes and wand. He did not know where the dark lord was but he was not going to let his master's wand end up in the hands of the light side.
Finally, he picked up the child and shuffled a bit as he adjusted everything in his arms. The baby looked at him and blinked, confused, and Rabastan stared back, just as confused. He was not sure why he was doing this. He almost considered putting the child down and leaving him there. It wasn't any of his concern what happened to the baby who had somehow killed the Dark Lord. He almost decided to scrap his plan and put the baby down, when he heard the sound of apparition outside and someone entering the house. There was no going back now.
He twisted on the spot and apparated away.
As he landed in Lestrange Manor, the boy, startled by the apparition, started to cry. Suddenly, they had five wands pointing at them. He had appeared in the middle of the dining room, startling those within.
Rabastan raised his eyebrow at them but they weren't looking at him.
"What the hell, Rabastan?! What did you do?" his brother asked while pointing at the boy with his wand. Rabastan took the wolf out of his bag and shook it in front of the child until he took it and stopped crying, then he turned to face the room of confused adults.
"The Dark Lord is dead, this baby killed him…. Somehow...I can't explain it."
"IMPOSSIBLE!" Bellatrix practically screeched " THE DARK LORD CAN'T BE KILLED!"
"Well, I don't know what to tell you, Bella! He's dead!" He showed everyone Harry's scar and the room fell silent for a few seconds. The scar had stopped bleeding but it was still clearly fresh.
"I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OU THE DARK LORD CANT BE-" Bella was suddenly silenced by Lucius who had pulled down his sleeve and revealed to the whole room his now faded mark.
Bella stood up, her chair scraping the floor, and raised her wand at the baby " Then he must die!" Harry started to cry softly at the sight of the angry witch, and pressed his face into Rabastan's neck. Rabastan turned the child away from his sister-in-law.
"You will not hurt him!"
Bella gave a shrill laugh as she advanced. " If the Dark Lord wanted him dead then HE MUST DIE!" Harry gave out a muffled scream as Bellatrix yelled
"I said YOU WILL NOT HURT HIM!" Rabastan bellowed back as Harry started to shake with his sobs.
"Rab, what are you going to do with a baby? You can't even handle plants, much less a small human. Just let Bella put it out of its misery." His brother stood up and made his way towards them slowly but Rabastan took a few steps back holding the child protectively.
"I think the Dark Lord tried to kill him because the child could be powerful and he didn't want him on the wrong side of the chessboard. But if we raise him in our ways… if he grows up on our side. I think if… when the Dark Lord returns, he may be of great use to us!"
The room was silent for a bit as everyone stared at each other. Finally, Narcissa stood up and walked to Rabastan. He gave her a wary look.
"If he is to stay, we might as well acquaint him with Draco. He doesn't need to be part of this argument." Narcissa took the baby bag off Rabastan's shoulder, and held out her hands for the baby. After a firm glare, he pried the baby off of his shirt and handed him to Narcissa.
"Hi!" Narcissa greeted the baby, and kissed the top of his head. The child immediately clung to her "What's his name?"
Rabastan thought about it for a bit….should he tell them who the child is? "Rasalas…. Rasalas Lestrange."
Rodolphus laughed. "You're not serious!" Rabastan glared at his brother as Narcissa left the room with the baby "You want to name this child you found after our father?!"
"Yes, that way people won't ask questions about his way he's just another Lestrange."
"HE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE US RABASTAN!"
"A simple glamour can fix that," came his reply.
Rodolphus threw up his hands and opened his mouth to retort when Lucius interrupted.
"I agree with Rabastan on this part. I think the child could be a great asset and as Narcissa and I have our hands full with Draco and you and Bellatrix aren't...the most capable of parents, I think Rabastan is a great choice and with a little help, I'm sure he will be able to raise the child successfully."
Rabastan gave Lucius a smirk and turned to his brother who had a sour look on his face.
"Fine…. who's the mother?"
"Dead… died in childbirth…."
"Who was she though? People will ask questions!"
"The Fawley girl has been in our basement for what, over a year now? I think she would be a fitting wife and a fitting mother. I can marry her right now, and we can blood bind Rasalas to her and I in the morning when he wakes up. Then she, unfortunately, died in childbirth… a year ago."
He smirked at Lucius, who rolled his eyes. " Fine. Polly!"
There was a pop and a small house-elf appeared. "Yes, Master Lucius?"
"Bring us Vanessa Fawley from the basement."
"Yes master, right away master!" There was a pop and the house-elf disappeared.
"Thank merlin you decided to keep your 'toy' alive for so long," Rodolphus mumbled as he and Bellatrix sat down
"Yeah, I'll be sad to see her go. But maybe you can spare Alice Longbottom and bring her back for me?"
"Wait, I thought you were going to come with us! You've been begging all week!" Rodolphus complained.
"I'm a father now…. I can't fail my wife like that," Rabastan replied with a grin.
Barty Crouch, who had been silent through the entire conversation, snorted as Lucius smirked and shook his head.
"Take the new Russian one instead of me. I'm sure he'll have some use."
Before they could speak more there was a pop, and a girl who could not have been over nineteen appeared in the room. She stared at everyone with fear in her eyes as she tried to stand strong.
"What do you want?" Her voice shook as she spoke.
"Congratulations Vanessa. You are to be married this evening!" Lucius said in a dull tone as Rabastan stepped forward.
"W-what?"
"Don't act surprised, my darling! After all, it would be very improper of us to have a child out of wedlock."
Her eyes widened in horror as Rabastan closed the distance between them "Don't worry, you'll meet him in the morning." He grabbed her chin and made her look into his eyes as he spoke in his softest, most sympathetic tone "So do you prefer the Lestrange Cemetery or do the Fawley's have their own?"
