New Orleans, Louisiana
Mikaelson Compound
March 1913
True to his word, Klaus was now making Kol do chores just like the rest of the family. Kol pushed the broom around the large front parlor slowly. Cleaning was worse than a thousand hidings. He would almost rather write lines, no, on second thought, it was slightly better than that.
"Brother, you missed a whole section of the floor," Klaus pointed out calmly.
"But if I keep doing chores, then we won't need the servants and won't their dear children starve to death. Think of it, dear brothers. It would be a great tragedy," Kol declared solemnly.
Elijah glanced up from his newspaper briefly, "Keep sweeping, young man. I do not wish to have this discussion with you again."
"But you are just reading the bloody The Daily Picayune. Stupid name," Kol grumbled.
"Kol, you know very well what I am doing," Elijah said more patiently.
Klaus looked up from his ledgers, "If Elijah did not scan for signs that Father is near, that we could get a very nasty surprise indeed."
"He only wants you!" Kol spat.
Klaus looked up hurt and cleared his throat, "That is true. I am sorry for the trouble, Brothers." Klaus walked out quickly.
"How could you, Kol? You can add scrubbing the lavatory to your daily chore list for that," Elijah fumed throwing down his newspaper on the side table.
"But Elijah, I was going to go to the church to volunteer today. Remember?" Elijah argued.
"You may still go. Just make sure your chores are done before tonight. And you best speak to Niklaus, that was just low. You know Father would kill us all just to get to him. Do not even forget that," Elijah said harshly.
"Elijah, I...," Kol was speaking to an empty room. In his mind, he snapped the broom in two and staked himself. But even that couldn't kill him. He had tried it once a few hundred years before after another love affair gone badly. All he had done was ruin a doublet and pass out for seven hours and then have to hear about it for then next fifty years from Rebekah. Where was his little sister? Perhaps she would be so kind as to get him out of this chore mess?
Kol finished sweeping and then went upstairs to dress for his volunteer work.
"Marcellus, may I have a word?" Kol called out as he lingered outside the younger vampire's bed chamber.
"No, Kol. I will not finish your chores. I do not know what you said to Papa and Uncle Elijah but they are not pleased with you. I would watch my arse, as you say," Marcel grinned.
"What if I did you a favor? Say got you and Rebekah a night alone, somewhere romantic?" Kol offered.
"Forget it, Kol. I have real work to do. Papa wants me to go to two different meetings. Give Paster Hassleback my regards. I simply do not have time to help out this week. I am too important now," Marcel said flashing his cuffs and checking out his profile in the looking glass.
"'Too important now'" Kol mimicked, "Bullocks. You think you are, I am sure my brothers are giving you the shite jobs. I will tell the pastor nothing." Kol stalked off to the church.
Pastor Hassleback's Church
Kol did not quite know why he liked coming here. He could not feed off the humans. He supposed he and the Pastor had developed a camaraderie that he found comforting. The new pastor always seemed happy to see him and had a kind word for him, unlike his own family, Kol thought glumly.
One of the church workers asked Kol to go to the house and grab a box of donations that someone had dropped off. Kol did so without complaint. He followed the stone path lined with flowers from the church to the Pastor's home.
It was a nice day out. He had on a dark blue double-breasted wool suit on. Kol ran his hand through his suspenders as was his habit when he was happy. A stiff wind blew through so suddenly that Kol had to clamp his hand down on his hat. He looked around quickly to see if anyone saw. Sometimes it was hard to slow down your vampire reflexes. But Kol really liked this hat and didn't want it dragging along in the mud.
Behind him, he saw a woman digging up herbs, "Hello, luv, lovely day." There was something about her that made his heart catch and he had not even seen her face.
"If you say so," the woman uttered, not looking up.
Kol's curiosity was piqued. "I do. What are you cutting there?"
"Where I come from, we used to call it herb of the cross, but here they call it-," the woman laughed.
"Vervain," Kol said bluntly. "Why so hostile? You do not even know me."
"But I do and you are hard to get rid of," the girl stated.
Kol sucked in his breath as he saw her face, "You look like an angel."
"But I am not, kind sir. I am quite the opposite," she spat as she gathered the vervain in her apron.
"You're a witch. Tell me your name, luv," Kol begged.
"My real name. Why not? I suppose I will just erase your memory again. My real name is Ariane. And as you guessed before I am on the run," Ariane explained as her cornflower blue eyes hardened.
"Who hunts you? Tell me and I will tear out their innards with pleasure," Kol vowed.
"My coven. Is it not always the ones we trust that betray us?" Ariane spoke heavily.
"Aye, it is. But why, you are too lovely for this world?" Kol said dreamily.
"No, because of this," Ariane said as she let the vervain fall to the ground and clutched Kol's forearm.
Kol felt something he had never felt in 900 years. It was like intensity and edge of daily life was drained out of him and he began to relax. Almost as if he were drunk, he staggered back in elation.
"You are no ordinary witch! What did you do to me?" Kol gasped with pleasure.
"You are no regular vampire! I have never felt so much power," Ariane said in shock.
"You are a ...No, it cannot be. I have heard tales of your kind, but far from here," Kol said backing away.
"Even you are afraid of me?" Ariane said as she went to gathered her herbs.
"I am afraid of nothing. It is just shock. A siphon? Here, in New Orleans. Love, you are in danger, if anyone found out, they would...," Kol said drifting.
"Kill me. Yes, I am well aware of the danger I am in," Ariane shared.
"But why stay here? At the Pastor's. Is there not somewhere else you can hide?" Kol asked with concern.
"You understand I only have power when I can siphon it, correct? Well, you are not the only supernatural posing as a human around here. This is neutral territory. The witches cannot practice here and the vamps cannot hunt here. For me, it is the safest place," Ariane revealed.
"Nonsense, if I sensed you. Others could, too. I know a little club, I have an old friend there. She could help get you old of the city. I trust her," Kol said.
"Why should I trust you?" Ariane countered.
"Because is that not the regent standing right across the street?" Kol whispered.
"Holy hell, how did she find me? Can you get me out of here now?" Ariane said pulling her shawl above her head.
"I can, luv. She cannot set foot on this property. There is just one catch about my friend's place," Kol admitted cringing.
"What? I am not in a position to complain," Ariane replied.
"Well, it is a whorehouse," Kol confessed.
"I have lived in worse places," Ariane retorted.
Kol was incredulous, "You have, like where?"
"An all girls boarding school. Now, let's go, please. They are closing in on me," Ariane interjected.
French Quarter
Miss Rosalie's
Kol ushered Ariane through the back door. He compelled the boy standing at the door to get Rosalie quickly. A moment later, the grand dame herself, rushed back.
"Mon cher, are you in trouble? And who is this divine creature? A boon for moi?" Rosalie gushed. She began to hack from the exertion of her haste.
Ariane shrunk back, "I am no prostitute, madam. Only a girl in search of shelter."
Kol glanced at her sharply, he had told her to let him do the talking. Clearly, Ariane did what she wanted.
"Rosalie, this girl needs hidden. Can you hide her for a few days? Just until we can get her out of the city, I would be in your debt," Kol said soberly.
"Again. Of course, my friend. Though, you know it will cost you," Rosalie smiled revealing her yellowed teeth. She bit off the tip of a fresh cigar and clamped it in her teeth unlit.
"That will be no problem," Kol said smoothly. Though internally, he remembered that Elijah cut off his cash flow after the last time he was caught stealing money from him.
"Fine. Follow me, cher," Rosalie said in a hushed tone.
She took Kol and Ariane through a storage area and pulled back a curtain, behind the curtain was a door. She fished a key deep out of a chain buried in her exposed cleavage and unlocked it.
"It's a bit dusty, but I'll send the boy with some fresh sheets and some food. You two will be alright for a few moments to wait here?" Rosalie said bursting into another coughing spell.
Kol nodded and brushed the dust off a chair for Ariane to sit on, "Now, luv. When you siphoned me, I remembered our first meeting. You didn't have to give me the liquor, you know?"
Ariane flushed. The first time she met Kol she had wiped his memory and stolen the liquor bottle from the pastor that he wanted. She was not sure how he broke that spell.
"How? That is a strong spell. What are you? You look like a boy, but have the confidence and mannerisms of a man. I know you are a vampire, but your power, it seemed...unlimited," Ariane gushed.
"Let us just say that I am a very old vampire. But what about you? You said where you come from they call vervain what? Herb of the cross. Where are you from, luv?" Kol purred. He had to know more about this enchanting creature.
Ariane was untying her white blond hair from the knot on her head, it fell to her waist in a river of silky waves.
"Portland, Oregon. I come from a long line of siphons. We have spent centuries hiding, like the parasites we are. Our leaders made a deal with the witches of Salem that if they would give them the siphons to sacrifice, then the Salem witches would help strengthen them. They helped create jail worlds for our enemies and even a ritual for our other problem," Ariane said with bitterness.
"Other problem? What is worse than siphoners? No offense, miss," Kol said hastily.
"None taken. Well, the amount of power a siphon can hold is too powerful so the power began to result in twin births. One twin would be weak, but have his or her own magic where as the other would be a siphon. Together, they were too powerful, yet alone useless to the coven. Our elders made a deal with Salem for these twins to merge on their 22nd year. That way, only one would survive to rule the coven, the better one. Yet, like all deals, there was a twist," Ariane said sadly.
"What? What if there are no twins?" Kol asked.
"That's it. If there is no merge in each generation then...the whole coven would die. Every last one of us. To ensure there was enough power, the coven began to sacrifice the lone, non-twin siphons. It was the only way to recycle the power into the leadership. It didn't always work, though. Sometimes, a siphon was born who was able to hide her speciality and who didn't want to die so easily," Ariane scoffed.
"This deal, it sounds like a curse. Why would your coven do this?" Kol said with anger in his voice.
"Salem witches tricked us. That is how they got so powerful, yet the jest was on them in the end. They all ended up fleeing for their very lives. There is a sect of Gemini witches who hunt rogue vampires to the ends of the earth. Another sect hunts down the descendants of Salem, who betrayed us. Not to kill or maim, but to break the curse. So far, though, we have no found any respite," Ariane confessed.
"What if you found the original spell cast, for the curse? Would that help? Sorry, my mother was a witch. Actually, before I was a vampire, I was a witch myself," Kol smiled.
"But that is impossible. A witch cannot become a vampire!" Ariane shouted.
"Shh, keep your voice down, luv. You are in hiding. But I was a witch and now I am a vampire. I have never tried to turn a witch, but I will try you, if you allow me," Kol smirked.
"No, thank you, sir. I am already one type of abomination. And yes, we tried to find the original spell, but it is cloaked. We cannot even find any of their grimoires. They need our prison worlds, too and our sacrifices. It is a great secret among the Gemini that the Salem witches 'take care of' the siphons. The Gemini are rid of a problem and the Salem witches grow in power, but it continues the curse of our people. We live in fear and misery. If our leaders don't produce twins, we are all dead. Yet, if both are siphons, we are doomed," Ariane explained.
"Let me help you, luv. I will help you hunt down these Salem witches and end this curse. Thank you for telling me your story. I hate to run but I must get home. Tell Rosalie I will bring the coin tomorrow. Be safe, Ariane," Kol whispered.
For the next week, Kol rushed back and forth from Miss Rosalie's to home. He scraped together all the money he could compel from safe sources to give to Rosalie, but she always wanted more. He even tried compelling her, but found her on vervain to his dismay. Kol let Ariane siphon him all she wanted, it left him feeling more relaxed than alcohol even left him. On the fifth night, he found Ariane drunk on a bottle of wine. She fell into his arms and they kissed. The next night, they consummated their relationship. With her siphoning him, he felt like he never wanted to leave her presence.
"What if I told my brothers your plight? They could help," Kol said after they had made love for the second time that morning.
"No," Ariane exclaimed. "They will kill me. You promised me your silence. I can make you forget again."
"Fine, luv. I will not say a word. But I cannot let you go," Kol admitted.
"Come with me," Ariane implored.
"Nay, my family is here. We made a vow to stay together for always...and forever," Kol said.
"Eternity? But what it is without love?" Ariana said as she peered into his eyes. Her white blond hair falling onto his bare chest.
"I cannot die, luv. My family are the only ones that will be around forever," Kol reasoned.
"But they do not trust you. Why must you rush home to do menial chores? Someone of your power should live like a king. Like a god. You, my love, are a god," Ariane insisted.
"Ha, I am not. I am far from it. I just want to keep you here and safe. Could you not pose as a regular witch? Maybe one who stopped a sacrifice or did some good deed?" Kol mused.
"Saving my own life is not heroic enough?" Ariane laughed.
"It is for me. I mean it, I do not want to let you go. If my family met you, they would love you. You cannot kill us. We are safe around you," Kol remarked.
"That is true. You need not fear me. May I think about it?" Ariane said.
Kol looked at his watch and panicked, "Bloody hell! I am hours late. Times flies with you. Forgive me, darling. Tell Rosalie I shall pay her later."
Kol rushed home and came home to face two angry brothers.
The Compound
"Kol, I see you failed to do your chores again," Elijah said before Kol even got in the door.
"I was helping the Pastor, for the love of-," Kol started.
Klaus' hard look stopped him, "Do not lie any further. We stopped by the church. You were not there. The pastor said he has not seen you in a week. Where were you?"
Kol recalled that he had failed to apologize to Nik for his comments days earlier. Was Nik still upset about that? He knew that he had to tell at least a part of the truth. "I was um, at Miss Rosalie's."
"Whoring! During the middle of the day? Where did you even get the money? That woman is a worst crook than a railroad baron!" Elijah spat. "You can forget about seeing daylight for the next week. Go to your room."
"But Elijah, it's not like that. I swear! Please, give me another chance," Kol begged. Kol turned to Klaus and found his brother's green-blue eyes boring into him intently. Nik did not believe him either.
"Kol, you best listen to Elijah if you know what is good for you," Klaus said evenly.
"But-," Kol tried again.
Elijah vamped by Kol's side and grabbed his bicep and dragged him to the staircase.
"You can march yourself up to your bedroom and put your nose in the corner right now or we can have this conversation with you over my knee right here in the courtyard. Rebekah is reading in the parlor and Marcellus is due home any minute. You decide!" Elijah threatened. Kol was ashamed to hear himself make a whining noise in his throat and he vamped up to his room and slammed the door.
"Kol! You slam that door again and I am coming up there," Elijah warned.
Kol's neck reddened and he opened the door slowly and called out, "Sorry, Elijah."
Klaus came up a moment later, "Kol, we are all trying to stay calm. Now, in the corner, please."
"Nik, I am sorry about what I said earlier in the week. About Father. I did not mean it," Kol said quickly. "I should have told you sooner."
"I know. Thank you for telling me," Klaus said simply as he pointed to the corner.
Kol trudged to the corner hopelessly and put his hands on his head. He had to think of a way to get back to Rosalie's before she threw out Ariane. Former ladies of the night were not best known for their patience with late paying customers. Kol kicked the wall in frustration.
"Kol, you kick a hole in the wall again and I will not stop Elijah from welting your backside, do you understand?" Klaus roared. Kol flinched. in his angst, he had forgotten Nik was still in the room.
Suddenly, Klaus was right behind him. Crack! Crack! Kol felt two powerful blows to the seat of his trousers and could not stop the tears that came to his eyes.
"I asked you if you understand me, little Brother?" Klaus said more softly.
"Yes, Nik. I am sorry. I am having a rough day," Kol cried. He sniffed and could not wipe his eyes or nose because he had to keep his hands on his hand.
"Oh, for goodness gracious," Klaus said, "Here." Klaus handed Kol his handkerchief and let him blow his nose.
"Thank you. I wish I could tell you the truth, but I cannot," Kol said through more tears.
Klaus was concerned. Kol was up to something.
"Baby Brother, there is nothing you cannot tell me, you know that," Klaus said gently.
"I made a promise, Nik. I cannot break it," Kol said firmly.
Elijah burst through, "Niklaus, the faction has called on us. There has been another kidnapping. Two, in fact, one from the French Quarter and one from the Algiers' covens. We need to go. Kol, turn around and look at me, please."
Kol turned reluctantly. He did not wish Elijah to see that he was crying.
"I am sorry, Elijah," Kol said looking down.
Elijah vamped over and put his arm on Kol's shoulder.
"If you are sorry, then show us by doing your share around here and behaving yourself. We should not have to go around and search for you because you are off doing whatever you wish. You can leave the corner, do your work and then you are confined to your room," Elijah said sternly.
"Yes, Brother," Kol said finally looking at him.
"You always whine that you are too old for spankings. Show us and stay here and obey us. I do not like speaking to you so harshly and I like thrashing you even less. Do not leave the Compound or we will have a real problem," Elijah warned.
"Yes, Elijah," Kol said in a chastened tone.
"Kol, we do this because we love you," Klaus said softly with a small smile.
"I know. I love you, too," Kol repeated back.
The Docks
Warehouse District
Elijah walked quickly, "This sigil, on the wall, I feel like I have seen it before."
Klaus looked at the circular symbol. To him, it looked like a snake eating itself.
"Papa Tunde's sons! When we killed them, they had that on their foreheads," Klaus said recalling the detail.
"When you killed them," Elijah corrected with a slight smirk.
"Do not remind, Marcellus. He is still vexed with me over that one. But it is the same sigil, it must mean sacrifice or something similar," Klaus replied.
"And salt over here. Brother, do you smell that?" Elijah said suddenly.
"Smelling salts? That is odd. Listen," Klaus said freezing.
"Is that crying?" Elijah asked suddenly.
Miss Rosalie's
Kol slipped out of The Compound knowing that he would not only pay with his arse, but with losing his brothers' trust if caught.
"Ariane, come home with me. I need my brothers' help to protect you. There is a kidnapper out there stealing children. I cannot keep you safe here. Please," Kol begged.
As Kol thought, his beautiful lover refused to come with him.
"Dominque, would you, luv?" Kol called. Dominque cast a sleeping spell and Kol was able to pick up Ariane and take her back to the Compound.
"I owe you one," Kol quipped.
"More than one, but I guess I know where you live. Now, can I get back to our festival? Some of us have to earn our daily bread, or at least our booze," Dominque quipped.
"Aye, thank you, darling," Kol said in thanks.
The Compound
Marcel saw Kol carrying the blond haired girl out of the cab.
"So now you are kidnapping women, Kol. That is very classy," Marcel said.
"Shut it, Marcellus. Get the door. This young beauty is in trouble. For once, I am being honest," Kol admitted.
"You, be honest. Damn, I cannot wait until Rebekah returns from her concert, she will be flabbergasted," Marcel went on.
"Grab a blanket. She should wake up soon. Maybe some tea? Would that be too much to ask?" Kol prodded.
"Fine. She looks familiar," Marcel said walking out of the room.
Kol sat by Ariane's feet and rubbed them, "Wake up, darling."
Elijah and Klaus came in talking in hushed tones. Kol closed his eyes and hollered, "Brothers, a word."
"Kol, what in the devil in this?" Klaus yelled.
"I am ready to tell you the truth. I know you are going to be angry, but this is not about me," Kol said.
Ariane woke up and looked at Kol with her blue eyes in horror.
"Are those your brothers?" Ariane gasped.
"Shh, luv, it is okay," Kol cooed.
"No, it is not," Ariane cast a sleeping spell on Kol and then grabbed his wrist to siphon him again.
Elijah saw something on Ariane's wrist, "Niklaus, her wrist, that mark. It's the sigil!"
Ariane's eye's opened wide in fear and she cast an aneurysm spell on both Originals. They crumpled to the floor.
Marcel came in with the tray of tea. He dropped it at the sight of his father and uncle on the floor. The tray crashed to the floor snapping Kol out of his momentary lapse of consciousness.
"Stop, Ariane. What are you doing?" Kol spat. "Please, stop."
"No, they will kill me. They know!" Ariana said her eyes wild with fear.
"About what?" Kol said wildly. His body was paralyzed, but he could speak.
"The Rite of Nine! It was the only way to get enough power to break the curse," Ariane confessed. Marcel picked up the tray and vamped over to hit Ariane across the head with it. No one attacked his papa and got away with it. The trick worked.
Klaus vamped behind the couch Ariane was getting up from. Elijah was getting up. Ariane was out of magic and clamped onto Marcel to siphon him. Unlike with the Originals, she could drain Marcel until his life force was gone. Klaus said the red light in her hands and heard Kol cry out, "No! You'll kill him."
Klaus vamped forward and with a practiced move twisted the neck of the witch until a crisp snap was heard. She seemed to hover in the air a moment and then crashed to the ground like the tea tray. Klaus went to Marcel and immediately fed him his blood.
"Son, wake up," Klaus said urgently. He looked at Kol with rage. "Was this your secret? That murderous freak! She almost killed my son."
Kol slumped to the ground, "I didn't know. The rite of nine? She was killing the children?"
"Not killing, kidnapping. I am sure now that she is dead that they have all woken up. We found their little bodies at the dock. They were in a bad state. Kol, you should have told us," Elijah said heavily.
"Papa, I am fine. Let me up," Marcel argued.
"I will get rid of this body. The factions will want to see this. We will have some explaining to do as to how this all went down. Marcellus, are you sure you are alright?" Elijah said with concern.
"Him? She was the love of my bloody life! I was going to help her break the curse. And you two are worried about him," Kol whined staring at the body of his former lover in despair.
Klaus growled and all three of them looked at him.
"Kol!" Klaus said as he grabbed his arm and begun to drag him upstairs to his bedroom.
"No, Nik, please do not. I am sorry," Kol cried trying to drag his feet into the floor. It was pointless. Niklaus was stronger than him, he always was.
Marcel looked at Elijah with alarm, "Are you not going to stop him? I have never seen Papa angry."
"No, Marcellus. Kol's earned himself quite a thrashing I am afraid. Do me a favor. Meet Rebekah at her concert and take her out on the town afterwards. She shouldn't be here for this," Elijah said firmly.
"But Uncle Elijah-," Marcel protested. He could already hear Kol wailing upstairs and he was scared for him.
"It will be okay, Marcel. Trust me. This is better than him getting the dagger. Your father will not let anyone, even Kol, put you in harm's way. Now go, please. Unless you want what Kol is getting up there," Elijah threatened.
"No, sir. I shall go find Rebekah," Marcel said hastily. He grabbed his hat and jacket and left the Compound quickly.
Klaus' Room
"Nik, what are you going to do? Why did you have to kill her?" Kol wailed.
Klaus stopped, "Her life was tied to those children's lives, Kol. She was a bloody monster. Let me guess, you were bedding her. Another damn witch!"
Klaus yanked off Kol's jacket and grabbed him by the arm. He ordered him to take off his shoes. Klaus put his foot on the wooden frame of his bed and bent Kol over his thigh.
Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack!
"Ouch! Owwww," Kol wailed as Klaus was swatting him hard. He could not take this. Kol tried to get up, but found Klaus left arm pinning him down.
Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack!
"Answer me! Did you bed her? This kidnapping siphon who almost drained my son! Is that where you were this week?" Klaus asked continuing to pepper the seat of Kol's trouser's with solid whack from the flat of his palm.
Crack! Crack!
To Kol, it felt like a nest of wasps were unleashed on his behind. He tried to shift his weight from foot to foot, but it did not help.
Unlike Kol, who sported suspenders on a daily basis, Klaus had taken to wearing a belt. Kol heard his brother unbuckle it and felt a shiver.
"No! Nik, not that. Please," Kol begged.
Kol heard the whistling sound and a second later felt the doubled up strap tapping again his backside.
Whap!
"All week you lied to us," Klaus lectured.
Whap!
"Sorry!" Kol tried
"Arggggg. OWW," Kol finally broke and wailed.
Whap!
"Nikkkk, please," Kol screamed in frustration.
Whap! Whap! Whap!
"N-Nooo, ahhhh, stooppppp," Kol cried.
Klaus had lowered the belt to strike across Kol's sit spots. No matter how much Kol kicked out and tried to push up, he was locked in place.
Whap! Whap! Whap! Whap!
Klaus was swinging the belt harder than Kol had ever felt before and he felt like he was going to die, if he was able to do so.
Kol saw his tears dripping down to Klaus' carpet and gripped his brother's leg in desperation. When he heard the door open and he turned his head slightly, he felt relief. Surely, Elijah had come to stop Klaus' belting .
"Give me a hand here, Brother," Kol heard Klaus say to Elijah. Soon Elijah had Kol's hand's pinned and Klaus was taking down Kol's trousers and drawers. Kol felt air swirling around his hot, burning backside. Then, he felt his brother take his pants completely off.
"Kol, I am going to put some of this cream on you. We have a long way to go. As usual, you have not fed sufficiently," Klaus chided.
"Elijah, no m-more, I-I had e-enough," Kol wept.
"Shh, Niklaus, let me have a little talk with Kol," Elijah sat on the bed and pulled Kol over his lap. Kol's upper body was on Klaus' bed and his feet were still mostly on the floor.
To Kol's utter horror, he felt the flat surface of Elijah's heavy hairbrush tap his rump.
"No!" he screamed.
"This is for neglecting your chores all week. You know that your little sister covered for you? You do not know that because you never bothered to show up to find out," Elijah informed him.
Pop! Pop!
"You put the whole community in danger with your secret this week. Kol, you didn't see those children, but only a beast would do what she did. Trust me," Elijah continued.
Pop! Pop!
Elijah applied his hairbrush from cheek to cheek firmly as he ignored Kol's wails and kicking. Kol made a fist and tried to shove it in his mouth and then gave up and wept into his hands. His feet tapped into the floor, but no amount of moving shifted his blazing seat from Elijah's hard, wooden hairbrush.
Kol was hoarse from screaming.
Elijah paddled Kol's bare hide until the whole surface was completely red. Kol lay limp and spent. He could not cry anymore, or he did not think he could. Kol did not realized Elijah was done and rubbing his back until several minutes after he stopped the vigorous spanking with the brush. Elijah coated Kol's behind again in another layer of cream. It crossed Kol's clouded mind that his brothers never did that unless...
"No! Please, no more," Kol pleaded.
"Give me one good reason why you do not deserve a switching," Klaus said harshly.
Kol felt Elijah coating his thighs with the cream and felt his stomach drop. Soon, Elijah placed Kol face down on the bed.
"I will hold your hands," Elijah whispered after smoothing back Kol's hair. He then gripped both of Kol's hands tightly and nodded to Klaus.
Kol heard a whistling sound and then a thwap. Kol felt as if a line of fire had struck him on the backside.
He bit his lip, but still cried out, "Ahhhh."
Then, another swishing sound and another thwap.
This continued until Klaus stripped down Kol's thighs and then back up. The worst was when the stripes crisscrossed. Over the his already smacked behind, the switch was lighting up nerves that were previously on fire. Kol felt himself twisting and even trying to cover his behind with his feet. He knew it was childish, but he could not help himself.
After a few warnings keep his feet down, Klaus snapped the switch in half and threw the sticks into the fire. He then leaned over and smacked Kol's bottom several times with his open palm again until Kol was bucking and kicking.
"That is for not cooperating," Klaus reported.
Kol was beyond speech. He just whimpered and sobbed quietly.
Kol was still healing, though slowly. Klaus felt the heat radiate from Kol's hot skin and decided he had had enough for the night.
Elijah let go of Kol's hands, "It's over, little Brother. All is forgiven."
Kol groaned as he moved, "I do not forgive you! She is dead. She was not going to kill Marcel. There was a reason for all of it."
Klaus sat on the bed. "Kol, talk to us. Tell us everything."
"Just get out. You whipped you like you have been wanting to, now get out," Kol said bitterly.
"Kol, you were punished for lying and deceit. No one wanted to whip you," Elijah explained.
"Fine, Elijah. Please, just leave me alone," Kol repeated.
Elijah looked at Klaus and shrugged. Klaus tried again, "Kol, please, do not be like this. I do not want to leave you alone."
"I am a-alone," Kol said breaking into pitiful sobs. Elijah put his arm on Kol, but Kol turned away.
"Brother, we will leave you until you have calmed down," Klaus said in defeat.
"Thank you," Kol said turning away. Elijah covered him with a light blanket. As they filed out, Rebekah burst in.
"What happened? Marcel will not tell me a thing," Rebekah said. She said Kol on the bed distraught.
"It is a long story," Klaus started.
"Kol, it is me. What happened?" Rebekah said going over to the bed.
"He said he wants to be alone," Elijah explained.
"She can stay," Kol cut in. He was face down on the bed and trying not to move.
Kol managed to explain everything to Rebekah without breaking down again.
"I am sorry, Kol. But if she hurt Marcel and those kids...," Rebekah reasoned.
Kol defended, "There is more to the story."
Rebekah was horrified that they had used a hairbrush, belt, and switch on Kol.
"Take my blood, Brother," Rebekah encouraged.
"No, I want to feel this pain. Plus, let them see what they did," Kol spat.
"Let me see," Rebekah said gingerly. The lights were turned low. She only peeled back a little of the blanket to see Kol's thigh but it was crisscrossed with welts and red marks.
"Oh Kol," Rebekah cried, "Move over."
Rebekah got in Kol's bed and patted his shoulder and cried. "I am so sorry. They are beasts. I shall not talk to them either."
"Bex, do not get in trouble on my account," Kol begged.
Rebekah agreed, but wept more to see her slightly older brother in such a state. Gone was the Kol she knew, this Kol's spirit was broken and battered. She stayed until Kol fell asleep. After leaving the room, she found Klaus outside.
"How is he?" Klaus said nervously.
Rebekah raised her hand to slap him across the face, but Marcel had vamped behind her.
"Rebekah, please do not!' Marcel begged.
"I never thought that I would have to comfort him as I had to comfort you 900 years ago after Father used to whip you like that. But his legs look just as awful as your back did. Welts, all red. How could you, Nik?" Rebekah glowered.
"I...," Klaus said helplessly.
"Come on, Rebekah. You are exhausted. Good night, Papa. I am sure Kol will be alright. He always is," Marcel assured him. Rebekah let Marcel hug her and she found herself sobbing into his chest as he walked her to her bedroom. They shut the door but Klaus could still hear.
"Oh Marcel, he's so hurt. I cannot bear to see my brother that way," Rebekah wept.
Klaus slid down the wall and sat clutching his boots. He allowed himself a minute of self-pity . Kol was just pouting. He would come out of it tomorrow, surely.
One Week Later
Kol refused to come out of his room or speak to them the next week. Rebekah sent in humans for Kol to feed off of, but he sent them back out untouched. Kol had never been like this.
Klaus was beside himself. He tried to apologize.
"Kol, I am sorry if I went too far. I love you and I love Marcellus. I thought I was doing the right thing. I am sorry about your friend, but if I had not have killed her, those children would still be sleeping. She was going to sacrifice them. Please talk to me, yell at me," Klaus intoned. Kol did not even glance or seem to notice Klaus.
"The witch Dominque heard about what happened. She agreed to come and cast a memory spell. He should forget most, if not all of the last week," Elijah stated grimly.
"Vampires having a witch do spells on their own kind. I am ashamed," Klaus spoke plainly.
"I know. But he cannot go on like this. He's furious at us, at himself," Elijah said.
"He's furious at me, you mean. I whipped him in anger because of Marcel again. No more, Elijah. I will not do that again. If a simple spanking does not do the trick, there is always the dagger," Klaus went on.
"Do not be ridiculous. Kol fell in love with another witch. He needs to forget these siphons ever existed. They are no matter to us, despite what he may have discovered. Dominque will work her magic and we will go on as before," Elijah promised.
"If you insist, I hate to erase his memory, but he is going to start to desiccate soon," Klaus griped.
"We will not let that happen," Elijah assured him.
A few hours later, Kol came out of his room famished. Rebekah had a crowd of humans for him to feed on. For once, no one cared if he drained every last one of them.
And he did.
