Legendary Heroes of Townsville
A Powerpuff Girls Fanfic by: Richard G. Eubanks
Pre-Reading A/N: Before I actually ever got to writing this, I wasn't exactly sure how I thought it would go. But I've kind of been acting out the scenes of this thing, and decided the idea sounded nice. The idea went like: 'Hey. What if the girls were turned into statues and were brought back several years later when someone had awakened them years into the future?' Well that is exactly what Legendary Heroes of Townsville is about. Our main protagonist's name is Katrina Melinski. Now I'm not gonna spoil too much of the story, otherwise there'd be no point in reading this. So without any further delays except this, let's jump forward in time to the year 2103.
Chapter 1
Townsville Myths and Legends (Three Legendary Heroes)
(Many scenes of Townsville are shown in a slideshow format). Greetings everyone; and welcome... to the city of Townsville. A totally peaceful place that hides nothing bad up it's sleeves, and even if there are to be any criminals lurking, the local police have that totally covered. See... life in Townsville back in like the year 1997 wasn't all just smooth sailing for its inhabitants; there were vicious monsters that ravaged the entirety of this city, there were villains with plans of world conquest, and there were many corrupt people bent on making the world worse. It sure didn't sound safe, but although those are all 'theories', you have to wonder how exactly. How is it that Townsville is still standing after many years? How is it that ever since the year 2021, it's been peaceful; despite history books clearly stating that it was pretty much hell for people living there? Another great question is: who is the one, or are the ones responsible for helping Townsville stand strong. No one seems to remember, but many theories have pointed out in Townsville's national history books that there was supposedly a trio of super-powered children, who were birthed from a lab accident, they defended Townsville when needed. There was never any information to really explain much of anything; except for when a man who's dedicated his life to adventure; Jason R. Vetemis, found and climbed the mountain named 'Myth Mountain' that mysteriously terraformed out where the forest covers an entire section of land. Jason climbed the entire mountain until he found an entryway in the shape of a tunnel; he went farther down until he found three stone statues of the supposed heroes. They were big-headed and small-bodied in design; their hands lacked fingers, and they each wore striped dresses. There weren't any faces on their design, so no features were proven to exist. The statues each had a unique hairstyle; one had long hair being held by a hairclip, and wore a large hairbow; another had pigtails, and another had short 'wings'. The names of these legendary heroes were never known; apparently the one who created them never seemed to have left anything behind regarding the proof of their existence. That's right, no camera footage, no pictures, no merch, no nothing! Going back onto the theories... many theorists claimed that the heroes did exist, but were turned into those statues. Honestly... if they were real, I'd like to meet them myself; but for now their existence remains a mystery.
"... and that's the end of my presentation." A feminine voice said.
There was applause and the lights in the front of the classroom turned back on. Our main character: Katrina Melinski (A/N: As mentioned above in my pre-reading note) who had brown hair in a short ponytail, a green T-shirt with a white flower on it, and slightly-torn-but-otherwise-in-okay-condition jeans, had just finished presenting her 'Townsville Myths and Legends' slide.
"That was a nice presentation Katrina!" The teacher at the desk to the right of her said. "Now why don't you sit down and let the next person come up?"
"Okay Ms. Keane." (A/N: No, it's not the Ms. Keane you're thinking about unfortunately).
"Now who's next..?"
(Jumpcut a few minutes later, the school bell rings)
The students left their classrooms in single-file lines; once Kat (short for Katrina (obviously)) was just about to leave, she was stopped by Ms. Keane.
"Oh Katrina. A brief word with you for a moment?" She was nervous, but she did oblige. She thought she might've been in trouble for something when she heard the teacher say: "Tomorrow after school ends I'd like you to meet me back in this room."
"What for?" Kat asked.
"It's regarding your slide presentation."
"Was it bad? Do you need me to do a new one!? Did I do something wr-" She was momentarily cut off.
"None of that; it's just regarding the topic is all. Now be on your way." Kat was confused but continued on. Why on God's Green Earth would she be asked to return there regarding the legend she researched? Well... whatever it is... it'd have to wait till tomorrow like Ms. Keane said.
Once last period ended, Kat grabbed her backpack from her locker and walked out the front doors. Her mother didn't have time to pick her up from school due to her applying for a job, and her father had worked in construction just about 24/7. So she had to walk home; but that's ok, she actually preferred walking anyways. Since it was bright out, she had a perfect view of the mountain she recently talked about in her presentation. "I seriously want to know why." She continued walking until she reached a crosswalk, waited for the signal, and continued. She passed by Townsville park, where an observatory sits on a sloped mountain. According to legends, that 'mountain', is a volcano. But since its remained inactive for centuries, people barely could tell; plus she's only ever been there once or twice. She eventually made it home to where no one had actually arrived yet. "Oh... they're not here yet." Well she wasn't given any homework so why waste time doing nothing?
(Tomorrow morning)
*Bell rings* "Alright class I'll see you all tomorrow." Everyone left except Kat, who remembered to stay back for that talk with Ms. Keane. "Alright, now then. We can start this conversation; oh, and don't worry. I've already told your next period teacher."
"That's a relief."
"Now then. Regarding those three legendary heroes... I have something that may come across as strange to you." She opens the drawer closest to her and reveals a figure shaped like the hero who wore the large hairbow.
"I didn't know you had this. A toy modeled after one of the three?"
"And it speaks. Click the button on her back."
"Okay." She did so, but in doing so she didn't really get the expected result. All she got was a garbled mess of words that sounded like: 'My - - - will save - -Townsville - -!' Most of it was heard, but the rest was just unintelligible static, presumably from a broken battery or damaged voice box.
"Oh right... I forgot to mention, you may need to take it home with you and tinker with the batteries." She apologized.
"I'll see what I can do. My dad is a construction worker, but I'm not sure if those two things go hand-in-hand." Ending it on that note, she left with the figure, accidentally making it speak again: '- needs our help! - go!' "Whoops..."
At her next class (which was art for all you people who were just too curious), someone just happened to notice the little girl peeking her enormous head out of her backpack's side pocket. They were male, with black hair, and wearing a blue long-sleeve shirt with his favorite number on it (which is 43), and black sweatpants with two side pockets. His name was Devin Maito. "Hey Kat!" He whispered to her.
"Oh. Heya Devin." She greeted him with a small smile.
"So... uh... what's with the figure in your backpack? And why does it look like the one hero from your presentation?"
She replied to each one by one. "One, I know it looks like her. Two, I... made it myself, and it was hidden in my backpack until now."
"I think it looks good. Are... those its... actual colors?"
"I'm not sure, I basically just went off the shading on the colorless photo."
"Wow... impressive." See, the reason he acts a little awkward around Kat is because he actually kinda likes her.
(School's out)
"That was close... I don't want to just expose Ms. Keane like that. Maybe there's more to this thing than meets the eye? Maybe that's why she gave it to me..." Once she got home she went up to her room and attempted to replace the batteries immediately. Lucky for her she had enough spare Double-A's to use; by opening up the hero's backside, she was able to replace the nearly-dead battery with the new one. "Okay... let's hope the voice is fixed." She pressed the button and: 'My sisters and I will save Townsville from evil!'. She pressed it again and: 'Townsville needs our help girls! Let's go!' "So they are related... hm..." She placed the figure in a box and locked it; once she did though she heard it say something way off. 'What are you waiting for!? You need to find us and bring us back! Townsville's soon to be in grave danger!' The fact that she heard a warning message with the same exact voice as the toy come from the toy was enough to scare her just a little. It's like that quote was directed towards Kat, it's like the toy knew she was in the room, it's like the toy has a mind of its own! It spoke again: 'Find a white house out in the suburbs and look everywhere until you find a tape recorder! Townsville's fate is in the hands of whoever finds this!' Maybe it was just a tape recorder also disguised as a talking figure, and this message was pre-recorded in case of the day those three heroes disappeared; but how's that true? It is just an urban legend after all. Forget it! Legend or not she knew what she had to do! But the real question is... 'will it all be worth it in the end?' Let's hope so...
(The next day...)
The next day school ended Kat makes it home and is greeted by her father. "Welcome back Kat. How was school?"
"It was fun. What about you? You're home early." It's true, he's never home before 3:30, or unless it's the weekends.
"Ah they decided construction had to be put off until some of those empty houses are finally cleared out in the suburbs."
"*Gasp*" She had all the right reasons in the world to gasp too. "Hey dad. Since tomorrow is Saturday, do you think you can bring me over to one of those houses?" Oh... I see where she's going with this.
"Is there a reason?"
"Curious... is all. Can you blame me?"
"Alright sweetheart I hear ya. I'll make sure to remember."
She nodded and left up to her room. She looked out the window of her room where she had a perfect view of the rest of the houses in the suburban area. None of them seemed to be similar to the one the toy was referring to. "This may be harder than I thought... this could mean one of two things. One: the house may be farther back; or two: they may have already knocked it down..." That does sound bad... "I just hope number two isn't right." She pushed these thoughts to the side hoping that maybe her optimistic thinking gets her in the right place tomorrow.
(Tomorrow)
Like mentioned earlier... it was Saturday, and her father doesn't work on weekends so she was given a chance to take a look around the rest of the Townsville surburbs with her dad driving her around.
"So again. Why did you want to?" He asked.
"I was just curious is all." She said nervously.
"C'mon baby you can tell me the truth; I won't judge ya."
She let out a small sigh and came clean. "The house I mentioned in the presentation I did for my history class. I felt like I actually needed to see it for myself."
"You remember what it looks like?" He asked.
"Yeah. It was rather angular, white, and had a red door."
"Hm... could that be the one?" She looked out the window to her father's side, and nodded her head. He parked the truck and they both approached the door. "You know, maybe when you turn 18 you could own this place."
"Why's that?"
"Well for starters, someone apparently put a 'never to be scheduled for demolition' note on the other side of the window." And that wasn't a lie either, there was literally a small white sticky note hanging from a piece of tape (although you can't really tell) on the opposite side of the door.
"I wanted to know if I could go in."
"Okay but-"
"By myself." She added in. "I'm not afraid of the darkness. Trust me." It took him a moment to come up with a reply before eventually responding with an understanding nod. She managed to get the door open and walked into an obviously dark room; she flicked up a light switch and found a rather broken down living room housing a torn-up family sized couch, a busted TV with a cracked screen, and ruined flooring and walls. It was a little sad seeing a house that was once inhabited by the people who lived out here, now abandoned, and reduced... to nothing but a forgotten memory. Humans are so cruel. Moving on to the kitchen just around the corner which was completely empty; Kat decided there wasn't anything of interest in there and- wait wasn't she supposed to be in the basement right now? Doesn't matter; anyways, she made her way up the creaky creepy stairs (deciding to ignore the bathroom) and went straight to a room fit for three individuals. The room looked colorless, but looked like it used to show signs of fun happy activities being played in; there was a torn bed with a comforter that seems to have lost its color, a shattered mirror, an empty closet, and a lone stuffed toy. "I'm not sure why... but this gives me strange vibes." Regarding that thought she took the toy octopus and went back downstairs to where she needed to be. Finding the basement wasn't a hard task, believing what she saw however... was. It looks of a lab, with many cardboard boxes sealed with heavy-duty tape. Each one was labeled (from left to right): 'Clothing', 'Toys', 'Photos', and the last one which she knew had the answer, 'Tape Recorder'. She tried looking around for something to use to open up the box, she found a pair of scissors just lying around, and she jabbed the tape so hard it tore open the box immediately. She looked in and saw only one tape recorder in there labeled: 'If you heard the message from the toy, play this'. It wasn't hard to piece this puzzle together, so she did just that, and heard a voice.
"Hello? To whomever is hearing this, you must help my daughters. I'm Professor Utonium, creator of Townsville's heroes. A spell unleashed by the greatest evil has turned my daughters to stone; I'd show you but unfortunately this is only a voice recording. You need to find the statues I've asked someone to reposition in a mountain on the other side of Townsville. You'll know it's them when you see three small stone figures with large heads. Now this part is important so I wish for you to write this down on the paper I've attached to this tape recorder." She found paper and a pen and waited for the voice to speak again. "Write down this directly. 'Girls? Wake up girls! Townsville needs you again!' If you speak this written line to those statues, the same reaction I got from doing so will most likely bring them back in their true form. From there it's probably best you explain to them what year it is and who you are. I don't have much time left, so I'm leaving myself frozen in a hidden room. You won't be able to find me, not without the help of my daughters. Remember: 'Find them, and make sure they're aware of everything'!" *Explosion* "Oh no! Uh... Professor Utonium, signing off!" The recording ended and Kat could only hold a surprised look for so long to the point where the lights mysteriously turned back on.
"The lights are on? How?"
(From outside)
"There we go. Fixed the fuse box, good thing I used to be an electrician."
(Back inside)
Kat was just about to leave until the tape mysteriously turned back on again. "Hi uh... new message. I also forgot to mention that there's a special vial of Chemical X sitting on the desk in a locked box. Once you awaken the heroes, they can help you with that. It's been designed to keep everyone but them from breaking in. Thanks again for being willing to help." It turned off again; Kat took the note she made and the octopus plush with her, hidden in her backpack. She made her way outside to where her father was waiting.
"Oh hey! You're back eh? Find anything interesting?" He asked.
"Nope. Nothing. But I will say, maybe I will live here when I'm old enough." She admitted.
"Alright Kat. Best be time to head back home huh?"
"Sure." She followed her dad into the passenger side of the truck, unaware that she was being watched by a person looking through the telescope of the condemned observatory from far away.
A dark and scratchy voice spoke. "So... there are believers? Except this time the legends are true! Those three are still around somewhere; I shall make it my goal to prevent her from completing her goal. Thus keeping Townsville safe for years on end! Watch out pesky human... I'm coming for you; and I shall make sure the Legendary Heroes are not brought back!" Razored eyes of a magenta shading revealed themselves, and faded instantly in the darkness. There were legends about a threatening voice coming from inside this observatory that spoke to passersby's; perhaps that was true too.
(That night...)
Kat couldn't sleep, she was too busy thinking about that message she heard. Not even her new octopus buddy 'Suckers' could help her. She got up and thought about doing the unthinkable. "I'm going to that mountain right now." Wow! The determination in this one! I tell ya!
She took the risk of getting in trouble over not getting enough sleep, grabbed her bag, put the note in it, and decided to sneak out the window. It wasn't the best decision she ever made; falling into a bush must've been hurtful, but she was otherwise okay. "I'm never doing that again." She brushed herself off and took an awfully long trek, unaware that she was being watched. Sometimes ignorance is bliss... maybe not in this scenario though. She continued down her path, and stopped when she heard the sound of something breaking. She hastily turned around thinking something was there; turns out... nothing (nothing for the time being at least...). She continued down her path and didn't even stop once.
(She makes it)
She made it; it was practically an hour long trek, her feet were sore from walking for so long, but at least she made it. "Jeez... and here I thought I was never gonna make it... Well time to do what I came here for." She climbed the easy steps of the mountain, and made her way to the entry point near the top. Strange that her research didn't tell her anything about a strange gate with a pattern shaped like a heart. It looked like there was no way past this; until she realized some strange blast of energy blasted it open. Since she had to move out of the way, she was hanging over the side of the ledge. "It can't be over now! I... have to get... back up!" Using all her strength she managed to pull herself back up onto the ledge. She entered the mountain without any further interruptions.
(Approximately 400 yards away from where she was standing...)
"Darn it all! I missed my chance! If she brings back those Legendary Heroes, Townsville will be in grave danger! I must avoid that by any means, even if it means I'll have to do something about... her." The figure left the spot completely.
(Back to her)
Making her way through the dimly lit tunnel, with only strange white fire torches guiding her, it wouldn't be long before she uncovers one of the many secrets this city had to offer. "I never knew all of this was here before. Maybe I should've gone here before doing my presentation; I feel like this would've been a greater help." The torches died down. "Oh no..." And a set of new ones flared to life, this time they alternated between pink, blue, and green. There was one last room for her to enter, that may pose a problem once she started feeling the earth under her feet moving. She looked back, and saw stone doors closing down blocking off the entryway. "Shoot! I gotta run!" As the final door came clamping down, she lunged out of the way to avoid getting crushed off the face of the Earth. When she came to, she was in a room with a computer screen, and three lightless bulbs. "Why is there a computer in a cave?" She was asking all the right questions. When she approached the computer, the on-screen text that appeared read: 'Please state name' and she did so by typing. More text appeared asking why she's here. She responded: 'apparently Townsville is in danger and this recording told me to come here'. The words told me to come here were highlighted and a video started to play. It was showing a man with a white lab coat and a black tie, and black hair.
He said: "Hello there. My name is Professor Utonium; creator of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, The Powerpuff Girls; or I'm sure as many of you in the future call them 'The Legendary Heroes'." How on Earth did he know that? "If you're seeing this then you've listened to the tape recording already, and are most likely trying to find out how to bring those three back. Or if you're even wondering if I'm telling you a made up story. The answers are, one: I'm not making this up, all of it is legitimate; and two: If you want to know how to bring them back listen carefully. First, step on the pressure plate behind this device, then we can get started."
The video paused and Kat managed to find the plate. She stepped on it and the three lights came on, revealing the statues in their greater glory. "It's them..."
The video played again: "Now, you should see three statues under their corresponding light. If you see them, speak out these lines aloud: *clears throat* 'Blossom, commander and the leader. Bubbles, she's the joy and the laughter. Buttercup, she's the toughest fighter.' Speak these lines, and once you do, play the video again."
The video paused and Kat recited the first line. Once she did, the pink light was disabled. She said the next two lines and those lights turned off as well.
"With those lights disabled, the final part of the 'reawakening' process can begin. Speak the lines you wrote on that paper back in my lab. Then it'll be completed; stay with them until they can feel their surroundings. Goodbye."
The video ends there... She spoke the lines out loud from the paper. "Girls? Wake up Girls! Townsville needs you again!" Nothing happened for about a minute, she was expecting the doors to raise up again, but still, nothing... that was until the room started shaking, and the statues started glowing in their corresponding colored lights. The stone on their design started to crack open, letting out white lights. The statues exploded... with a large *BOOM!* Kat was out like a light.
