Prologue
Elsa
"Papa? Can you play now? Please?" the eldest princess pleaded. Her head poked over the top of the desk. Her blue eyes stared up at her father as she waited for him to respond. The King of Arendelle knew his seven-year-old daughter wouldn't leave anytime soon. He watched as a single snowflake drifted across his desk, turning his attention away from his work.
"Not now sweetheart. I have a lot of work to do. Why don't you see what Anna is doing" King Agnarr told the princess. He ruffled his daughter's light blond hair and she pouted.
"Anna is sleeping." the princess complained.
"Elsa, I have lots of work to do at the moment. I have to finish making the last preparations for the Fall festival at the beginning of October." King Agnarr said. It was late September and Arendelle only had a couple of weeks to finish preparing.
"Oh yeah! Can I help?" Elsa asked. She ran around the desk to her father's side.
"Well, I guess you can help with the dessert menu. What should we have?" King Agnarr smiled. Elsa looked up at her father and grinned.
"Chocolate! Lots and lots of chocolate! How about a whole chocolate castle!" she laughed.
"Well we can have chocolate, I'm not sure about a whole castle though. What do you think your mother would like?" Agnarr chuckled.
"Umm. She likes pumpkin pie. How about pumpkin pie!" Elsa said.
"I like that idea. I think that's all you can help me with for now. I have to get back to writing the letters." Agnarr said.
"Letters to who?" Elsa asked, trying to stay a little longer.
"Letters to our allies, in the kingdom of North Haven." King Agnarr answered.
"Where is North Haven?" Elsa asked.
"Their kingdom borders the side where the enchanted forest I was telling you about earlier is." King Agnarr explained. "Now, I must get back to work."
"Yes Papa." Elsa said walking out of the office. The king smiled at the young girl who saw wonder and magic in the world. The little girl with powers of ice who would eventually grow up to be the next queen of Arendelle. For now, she was one of his two carefree daughters.
Jack
Jack followed his older brother through the halls of the castle. His father, King North of North Haven, wanted to see him.
"Father is not happy with you." Aster scolded Jack. The white-haired boy bounced along behind Aster. Aster frowned down at his six-year-old younger brother. The 16-year-old prince had grown tired of Jack's constant energy and pranks.
"Why is Father so angry? I only played one prank on him!" Jack asked innocently.
Aster ran his hand through his blue-grey hair before stopping at the door to his father's office.
"I'll let him explain. In you go." Aster said holding the door to North's office for Jack.
"Father? Why are you angry with me?" Jack asked as he came in.
"You can't go around showing off your powers. You have to keep them secret from outsiders. I don't want you put in danger because you are so young and powerful. You have to stop sneaking out. You are only 6! I've told you this before!" North scolded.
"I only sneak out occasionally! Mama said I should go on adventures every day!" Jack said.
"That's enough Jack!" North snapped. While he loved his son very much, Jack gave him a headache.
Jack sank into his seat and pouted. King North shook his head and sighed. Out of his two sons and one daughter, Jack was the most playful and mischievous. North knew the staff of the castle loved his youngest son's energy and North had to admit to himself that he also loved the carefree and playful pranks Jack did. All Jack wanted was to make people smile.
"Go to your room until dinner. I don't want to hear that you flew off and spent the rest of the afternoon having snowball fights. Got it?" North told him.
"Yes Father." Jack sighed. North watched as the young prince got up and went to the door.
"What happened this time?" Jack's older sister, Sophie, asked as Jack left the office.
"Father doesn't want me to show off my powers! He says it's dangerous. I can protect myself! He also said to stop sneaking out." Jack complained. He tapped his staff against the wall and watched as an intricate pattern of frost formed. His staff was a gift from his mother on his 5th birthday. It resembled a shepherd's crook with detailed frost like patterns and he carried it wherever he went. It helped him channel his powers and it made it easier to control them.
"I know you like playing with it but I think Father is right. Not everyone is nice. Remember Mother telling us the story of Rapunzel, how an evil witch kidnapped her and used the princess' magical hair to keep her young?" Sophie told Jack. She rested her hands on his shoulders until he looked at her.
"You're right. Father said I have to go to my room. See you at dinner." Jack mumbled before walking to his room.
Elsa
The guests for the festival came the day before the event started. Elsa was running around the castle going from window to window trying to see them. A light brown-haired little girl followed her.
"Anna look!" Elsa called from one window.
Anna ran over and Elsa helped her onto the window ledge. Anna's blue eyes widened at the sight of all the people
"Can we go down there?" 4-year old Anna asked.
"Let's ask Mama!" Elsa said. She helped Anna down and they ran to find their mother.
"Mama! Can we go down and see the people coming for the festival?" Anna asked when they found Queen Iduna.
"As long as you promise to stay close to me. Elsa, you can't use your powers ok" Queen Iduna said to her daughters.
"We promise!" Elsa said.
"Ok then, come on." Iduna smiled.
"Yay!" Anna cheered.
Queen Iduna led them to low a balcony overlooking the courtyard where everyone was gathering. Elsa and Anna were laughing and waving to people. They smiled and laughed even more when people waved back. There was happiness in the air and almost everyone was smiling. The trumpets announced the arrival of the royals from North Haven. Elsa watched as they came in, 15 guards marched in front and the royal family walked behind. An older, slightly fat man walked in. His white hair and beard made him look like Santa. His hand clasped the hand of a tall, thin woman with teal hair. Behind them, a teenaged boy with blue-grey hair walked next to a shorter, blond girl.
"That man looks like Santa and the woman looks like she could be a fairy!" Anna laughed pointing to the king and queen.
"That's King North and Queen Toothiana. Behind them is their eldest son Prince Aster and their daughter Princess Sophie." Iduna told Elsa and Anna.
Elsa was watching the royals when someone caught her eye. He was walking behind everyone else in the family but it was obvious he was part of the royal family from his clothes and how close behind he was. He looked to be her age but had snow-white hair and he seemed unhappy to be here. He held a staff in one hand and the other was shoved into his pocket.
"Mama, who is that behind Aster?" Elsa asked, turning to face her mother.
"I believe that is Prince Jackson. I recall his father saying he goes by Jack." Queen Iduna said.
Elsa looked back at the young prince just as he looked away from her.
Jack
Jack was annoyed about the festival before they had even arrived. His parents had made him wear nice clothes. A white, collared shirt and black pants with a dark blue jacket instead of his usual brown pants, loose white shirt and cloak.
"Mother why can't I just stay home?" he had asked on the way there.
"Because we are all going as a family and you are too young to stay home alone. Also, King Agnarr of Arendelle invited all of us. I'm sure you will have fun." Queen Toothiana had told her son. Jack frowned. Every party they had gone to ended up with him being sent to bed early so the adults could discuss things about the kingdoms. He never found any kids he was allowed play with.
"Cheer up. Sophie and I will be with you as well. We can maybe have a snowball fight in our room at the inn." Aster had said.
"That would be fun." Jack had replied though he still wasn't excited.
When they got there, Jack stayed close to his family. They entered the gate and trumpets sounded. Jack looked around, startled. After a minute or so, his eyes landed on a low balcony of the castle of Arendelle. Two young girls stood with the queen. The older girl's hair was light blond and she was watching as his family came in. Her mother was saying something to her. A light brown-haired girl poked her head above the railing. Both of the girls were smiling and waving at people. The older girl turned to look at her mother and the queen said something. Jack watched as the blond girl looked back at his family. He quickly looked away before she caught him looking at her.
"Jack! Come here. I want you to meet someone!" North called to his son when they had entered the castle.
"Who?" Jack asked. He hoped it wouldn't be some older woman who would give him hugs and baby talk him. He had been looking at the artwork in the room and picturing himself as some of the people in the paintings.
"These are the princesses of Arendelle. Princess Elsa and Princess Anna." the queen of Arendelle introduced. The two girls from the balcony stepped forward and smiled.
"It's nice to meet you girls!" King North and Queen Toothiana said.
"This is Prince Jackson, Prince Aster, and Princess Sophie of North Haven." Queen Toothiana introduced.
They bowed as King Agnarr walked in.
King Agnarr smiled and after a formal greeting, told them that when they were in the castle, they didn't have to use formal titles. He wanted to keep it relaxed and fun.
"Nice to meet you" The girls said. The older one, Elsa, smiled at Jack and he smiled back. Jack spent the rest of the festival running around with Elsa, stealing chocolates and playing pranks on the people there. Neither of them told the other about their powers but they had fun playing like regular kids.
