"Well, Luz, Lucila," Eda started off to the duo. "Did you ever in your life think you'd see something as breathtaking as this?" She nudged the both of them as they were looking at...a giant slug laying in garbage, with boils on its back.
"I...don't like this," Luz tried not to throw up. Lucila gagged, covering her mouth with her hand.
"You know, when I said I wanted to explore the Boiling Isles, I didn't mean the gross aspects," She murmured wearily underneath her palm.
"Yes, it doesn't get much more inspiring than the trash slug," Eda walked over to the slug, bending down to it. "It makes a home, a life from what others have thrown by the wayside," She held up a rubber chicken and then tossed it. "Until, blam, it gets blasted by a wave one day and croaks from all the salt. And then we get to sell the stuff it ate." Eda held out pickaxes to the girls, Luz looking horrified and Lucila looking like she was about to actually throw up.
"Please don't make me..."
"Literally geeeeet that away from me," Lucila backed up a bit.
"Aw, come on, you two," King walked off and laid out a sheet. "It's not every day you get to go to the dump and pick apart a garbage carcass."
"Eh, nuts to you both," Eda swung the pickaxe and the two flinched.
"So, Eda..." Luz started off, the two wincing as they looked away briefly from another swing. "What if we tried some new lessons for my apprenticeship? Like-" Another thud was heard and Lucila covered the top of her head with her hands. "Read ancient scrolls or mix together potions, or..."
"Ugh!" Eda groaned, taking out the receiver of an old telephone. "That sounds like a bunch of magic school stuff."
"Wait," Luz blinked as she heard two specific words. "Is there a magic school here? Like, winding towers, cute uniforms, dark plots that threaten your life kind of magic school?" She clasped together her hands eagerly. Lucila looked a bit interested upon learning about the school in general.
"Mm-hm. What's worse, they force you to learn magic the 'proper' way."
"I take it you don't approve?" Lucila asked with a raised brow, crossing her arms.
"Magic isn't proper!" Eda argued to her. "It's wild and unpredictable. And that's why it's so beautiful. I didn't finish school, and look at me! Who wouldn't envy where I am right now?" She was almost waist deep in garbage, which was not a pleasant sight or a good example. Luz looked away sadly, and Lucila gave Eda a deadpan look. "Uh...hey, here's a lesson," She walked over and grabbed Luz's hand. "A great witch is resourceful, like this," She forced Luz's hand into an intestine and Lucila gagged visibly, covering her eyes. She made Luz pull out...a ball of slime.
"Oh, hey. Greasy slime ball," Luz stated in disappointment.
"Use your slime ball wisely, young witch," Eda clasped her hand and then stood up. "Back at it! We'll hit the stink nodes first."
"Actually," Luz stood up. "If it's okay, I-I think we'll head home and look at pictures of animals that are still alive. Love you, King," She bent down and rubbed his tummy, causing him to giggle. "You little beach peach." Lucila bent down and kissed his forehead, following after Luz. She leaned in towards her sister's ear when she caught up with her.
"Anything's better than stink nodes..."
Eda just shrugged at them. "More for me, then," She got into the mouth. "There we go. Okay," As she was tossing things, a tuba landed on King's head.
"Ow!" He wiggled around, trying to get it off.
"This is awesome!"
Luz looked at the slime ball in her hand, Lucila looking through a manifest she made out of the books from the Owl House. She was trying to decide which one to read next, she had read about almost half of them now.
"Ugh, if magic's all about digging for slime balls, maybe I don't have the stomach for it," She placed it in her pocket.
"Oh, please don't say stomach. I do not need that image in my life," Lucila held up a hand.
"You can do it! You can!"
They paused as they heard a girl's voice belonging to neither of them. "Mysterious voice of encouragement?" Luz murmured as Lucila looked to her left.
"It came from over there," She pointed and they went over to a bush. Luz moved away some of the leaves to see a girl with pale skin, glasses, and a pink body suit of sorts.
"No! Little witch girl."
"I haven't seen that kind of outfit on anyone else before," Lucila raised a brow in confusion. "Wonder why."
"You can do it!" The girl stood up, trying to look determined. "Even if you get a bad grade, it's not a reflection of you as a witch. And my parents are right. There are better opportunities on this track. Now get to school!" She stepped on a flower and she moved her foot to see it destroyed. "Oh no! Oh, little friend! I'm sorry!" She bent down to it in horror. She then spun a finger and a green circle appeared underneath it above the flower. Little green orbs fell over the flower, bringing it back to life.
The two gasped at this and the girl's ear tilted. She looked up as a wheelbarrow came to a stop, and on top of it was a girl wearing the same pink body suit. Only this time, her hair was more green with brown at the front as a patch. She was reading a book, and she looked down to see the first girl.
"Willow!" She closed the book, and her look of confidence already made Lucila think that she was not going to like her. "You're so unnoticeable I almost rolled into ya." She jumped down with a chuckle. The flower went back to dead and Willow stood up.
"Hi, Amity," She greeted, an edge of annoyance in her voice.
"Shouldn't you get to class early to prep your-"
Willow's own wheelbarrow shook a little, and it fell over. A pile of purple sludge fell from it, along with an eye. "Oh, Willow..." Amity shook her head. "You don't have anything to show, do you?"
"Witch drama!" Luz whispered next to her sister.
"Ugh, brats like her make me wish they didn't feel so entitled. I could never stand someone like that," Lucila looked away in annoyance. With her wearing glasses, she did encounter some people who looked down at her. She mostly minded her own business, though, and if necessary, she did stand up for herself sometimes depending on the situation.
Willow moved her hood over her head, blushing in embarrassment and looking away. Amity sighed a bit, stepping further.
"This is why people call you 'Half-a-Witch Willow'," The tone in her voice suggested she wasn't sympathetic at all. Her cauldron shook, getting her attention. "Oh, looks like someone wants to say something to you," She removed the cover, crossing her arms proudly. "Abomination, rise," She snapped her fingers and a purple creature made of sludge bent down to Willow.
"You're a..." It touched Willow's forehead, making a star on it. "Star..."
"Aw, it's like mine," Amity pointed to her badge that said 'Top Student.' She then adjusted it as it twinkled. "But much smaller, and meaningless. As top student, it's my duty to tell you to keep at it. Even you could get a passing grade someday. Abomination, cower." The abomination went back into the cauldron, and she closed it off with a lid. "See you in class, superstar."
Willow frowned and removed her hood. As Amity left with a smile, Luz stuck out her tongue while Lucila just glared at her.
"Oh, see you in class, superstar," Willow mocked her and removed the mark with her arm. "I hate when she does that." The two looked sympathetic towards her situation. "I hate making abominations. I hate getting bad grades! Ugh, I can't stand this anymore!" She grunted in anger and her eyes shifted to fully green.
The two gasped at her appearance and the dead flower sprouted into several vines. Two reached over and grabbed the sisters by their legs. They screamed as they were dragged up into the sky and then fell behind her. They looked up and Willow turned to see them...
Eda was tying a bag of slug eggs to her staff. King was sitting on a pile of trash behind her. "Oh, not a bad haul. That oviduct was loaded."
"Ah, lose apprentice, gain garbage eggs," King pointed out mockingly. "Fair trade."
She scoffed and turned to him. "I didn't lose anything."
"If you don't teach Luz right, you will. And if you lose one, you lose both. That's when I'll come in, make them my apprentice," He bragged, jerking a thumb to himself.
"Ha! And what would you teach?" Eda taunted him. "How to get stuck in the arm of a sweater?"
"Hey, that only happened once!" He yelled in protest. "I'd teach them about demons. How to identify them, talk to 'em, raise an army with them and tear apart the world!"
"After they tear you out of the sweater arm, right?" She casually leaned against her staff.
"You think you're so smart! Well," He jumped down from the pile of garbage. "Why don't we make a little bet where I can prove that I'd make a better teacher."
Eda smirked and dug into her hair. "Okay. I'm obligated to remind you that I only use our bets to utterly humiliate you," She pulled out a book that read 'Eda and King One-Sided Wagers.' "And..." She opened up the book and showed it to him. "That you've never won." Both pages had drawings of them at the top as columns, with checkmark boxes underneath each one. And all of them had Eda with stars and King with fails.
"I like those odds," He challenged her.
She looked down and saw one of the eggs she gathered. "So how's this? Teach this trashslug to be your loyal soldier in one day. Prove that you can be a better teacher than me, and the girls are all yours. But, if you don't, I change your name from King to...Mr. Wiggles."
"Well, when you lose, you'll have to...wear a shame hat and sleep in a shack and never come into the Owl House again! Ha!"
"Deal," She held up the book, where there were two lines, one of them already having her name signed on it. He pressed his paw against the page as his signature. She tossed him the egg and it hatched when it landed on his head. It slid off and he caught it. He looked up to see Eda walking away with a laugh, as she thought that she'd be a sure winner.
Lucila and Luz continued to stare at Willow, who laid eyes on them. As soon as she did, her eyes went back to normal, and she looked panicked.
"Oh no, no, no, no, no! I'm so sorry!" She bent down to them and recalled the vines.
"It's okay," Luz held her leg. "The thorns only went through a few layers of skin."
"And I think I can safely say that I'll survive," Lucila smiled a bit as only her jeans were a little torn up.
Willow got a closer look at the two and noticed their ears. "So...circly." They both yelped and hid their ears, since they didn't have their hoods on. Willow gasped in realization, her eyes shining. "You're both humans! This is astounding! Humans on the Boiling Isles!" She held one cheek each to examine them. She then helped the two up. "How'd you get here? What are you doing here?"
The bell rung from feet away and she froze. "I'm sorry. I can't stay," She finally let go of them. "I have to go disappoint my teacher. It was nice to meet you, humans," She walked away dejectedly and there was something about her that made them want to help. She seemed like a nice girl, and she definitely didn't deserve to be called 'Half-a-Witch' Willow.
"Wait!" Luz stopped her. "I'm Luz, and this is my sister, Lucila. And you're Willow, right? What you did with that flower and those plants, it was...wow!"
"Thanks," Willow's smile dropped. "But I'm not even supposed to be doing plant magic. My parents put me in the abomination track at school."
"Why not just tell them-"
Luz squealed happily as she grabbed Willow's arms, interrupting her sister. "Like, magic school?" Willow nodded, earning a beaming smile from Luz. "That's so cool!" She finally let go of the girl. "I'm so jealous. I have a teacher, but her lessons are a bit...untraditional."
"And weird. And gross," Lucila stuck out a tongue at the reminder of the slug.
"Yeah, that too..." Luz agreed, sagging her shoulders. "I bet she wouldn't even let me enroll. But...I wish I could spend one day there."
"I wish I could get a passing grade for once," Willow confessed to them. "Then people would stop calling me 'Half-a-Witch Willow,'," She kicked at the abomination puddle, the eye rolling away.
"Hey, wait," Luz suddenly got an idea. "I know how we can both get what we want," She bent down, grinning widely as some of it was on her hands. "Make me your abomination!" She splattered the substance over her clothes and cheeks. "I'll get you a good grade, and you can get me into magic school. It's fiendishly clever." She crossed her arms, raising a sly brow.
"What?!" Lucila and Willow exclaimed in unison.
"I saw that girl's thing. It's just chunks of stuff that talks weird. I'm chunks of staff, and I talk weird!"
"Yeah, but in a good way. You're more pleasant than that girl, for one," Lucila patted her sister on the head, who squealed a bit.
"Sibling embracement!"
"That's true..." Willow agreed with both of them, giggling.
"Wait, you don't think it's a bad idea?" Luz stared up at her sister in surprise.
"No, actually, I think it's a great idea. Humans are uncommon here, so they probably wouldn't think otherwise. And plus, I'm all for showing up bullies," She smirked, a hand on her hip. "Just as long as you understand that this is only until Willow's class is over."
"Yes, yes I do!" Luz pumped her fists, jumping up and down happily.
"Okay. It's a deal," Willow held out her hand. "Luz." The two then shook hands.
"This is a great plan," When they pulled their hands away, they were stuck together by the substance.
"Oops. Abomination goo."
They struggled to get it off, Lucila pulling at Luz's shoulders. It snapped off and Luz fell into the puddle, splashing her sister with the goo. "Great plan."
"Awesome," The older girl deadpanned at the mess on her clothes. "But how are we gonna disguise me, though? You can't exactly bring two abominations to your school for a grade," Lucila asked as she looked at herself and Luz gasped at her, confusing the girl. "What?"
"Are you getting interested in magic?!" Her younger sister placed her hands on her cheeks, her eyes shining.
"No, I just wanna see what the school is like, that's it. I'm not enrolling there, Luz, we've been over this whole magic thing."
"Aw," Luz pouted, sagging her shoulders.
"And besides, the reason why I'm doing this is to help Willow," Lucila gestured to the girl. She definitely deserved a good grade, since she was really trying.
"Hm. Well, I could turn you into a garden sprite to get you in!" Willow offered with a smile.
"You can do that?" Lucila questioned in surprise.
"Well...hypothetically. I've actually never done it before, much less on a human," She looked away nervously.
"Hypothetically is better than nothing, right?" Luz asked optimistically, making Lucila a bit anxious. Considering the skills she just witnessed from Willow, she may be a...teensy bit wary of the success of the garden sprite spell.
"Uhh, on second thought-"
"Oh, no, no, you'll be fine," Willow insisted, pointing her finger at her. "If I'm doing this right."
"Wait, wh-"
Willow activated her plant magic and it surrounded Lucila. A large vine appeared near her and blew smoke onto her face. She coughed into her elbow and then went poof. Luz gasped and looked around for her.
"Uhh, was that supposed to happen? Because my sister disappearing out of thin air wasn't supposed to happen!"
"Uh oh," Willow murmured in worry and they ran up to the smoke. They looked down and were surprised to see a smaller Lucila sitting on the ground, being at least 3 centimeters tall. She held her head, as her hair was down, lilies on the sides of her hair, right above her ears. There were two small pink butterfly clips at the end of her hair. She had on a pastel pink dress with a skirt made entirely of a closed rose, the tips ending at her knees, and white off-shoulder puffy sleeves going all the way to her arms. Her legs had leaves wrapped around them, but she was barefoot for the most part. The front of her dress also had an actual bloomed gardenia in front of it as a layer stapled to the fabric, the stem going all the way down to her skirt. And finally, she had medium-sized fairy wings on her back.
"Whoa! It worked!" Luz cheered, picking up the girl in her hands. "You look so adorable!" She nuzzled her cheek with her sister's.
"Luz! Stop!" The girl called out, trying to push her away. She looked at herself, humming. "Huh. I approve. I especially love the dress."
"I'm not sure how long the spell will last, but she's right. You look beautiful!"
"Welcome to Hexside School of Magic and Demonics," Willow introduced as they approached a building that looked more like a cathedral, but still grand. "Remember to stay hidden, okay?"
Luz jumped up a bit from the cauldron, Lucila popping out from the top of Willow's hair. She gasped at the building. "And remember, if people see you, you'll get confiscated to the Horrors and Found," Willow warned the girl.
"Don't you mean Lost?" Lucila wondered slowly, the girl shaking her head no. "Oh...got it," She stated nervously and ducked back into the hair. Students were wearing various colored uniforms as Willow walked over to her locker. She ticked it open and grabbed her book.
A shorter boy with a blue uniform walked forward, reading about humans...from a Tween Boss magazine. He bumped into Willow and she glanced down at him.
"Willow, you would not believe humans."
"Humans?" She asked nervously. "Pfft," She looked at the cauldron and then her hair wide-eyed. "I haven't seen any. What?"
"Did you know...that humans nail barbed wire to their kids' teeth?" He showed her a photo of a girl with braces. "But why? Maybe to make them magnetic."
"Actually, it's for storing treats," Luz spoke up from the cauldron.
"Shh! Not even true. You tried to do that to me last year when I had them, remember?" Lucila hissed a bit from Willow's head.
"Oh yeah."
The boy raised a brow in confusion at Willow.
"Okay, Augustus," She braced herself, placing her book in her wheelbarrow. "I'm gonna tell you something. But you have to be cool."
"I can be spool. I-I mean, cool!"
"Okay. Abomination, rise," Willow ordered and Luz rose out of the cauldron.
"Ta-da! I'm an abomination," She introduced herself.
"Luz, that's not how abominations act," The girl scolded her. Gus simply dropped his magazine upon laying eyes on her.
"No," He slapped his cheeks, touching his ears as he noticed hers. "No, it couldn't be."
"He's the president of the Human Appreciation Society," Willow explained to the two. "Most witches wouldn't be able to recognize a human right away. But Augustus is an expert."
"Where are your gills?" Augustus looked at Luz with his eyes up and down.
"I knew an Augustus back in the human world," Luz stated with her arms crossed. "We called him Gus."
"Gus? Nickname? Human nickname?" He held his cheeks in glee. "Gus? Call me it. Wow. Gus. This is the best day of my life."
Lucila peeked out from Willow's hair, examining him. "Hm, he does look like a Gus."
"Oh, this is Luz's sister. She's human too, but I turned her into a garden sprite to sneak her in," Willow pointed up at her, and she waved.
"You were able to turn a human into a garden sprite?!" Gus gasped as he examined her. "She looks so pretty! Loving the flowers in your hair," He pointed up at them and she beamed, a bit flattered.
"Aww! Thank you! I'm Lucila, but you can call me Luci if you want. And there's much more to humans than what meets the eye. Just come talk to me, and I'll tell you anything you wanna know," She offered with a smile. Gus already endeared her not only because of the compliment but because he was so eager to learn more about humans. Not unlike how she wanted to learn about everything from the Boiling Isles.
"Do my ears deceive me?!" Gus held his cheeks in awe. "A teacher for humans, by a human? I have been rewarded this day! No, it's official. This is the most unforgettable day of my life!"
She chuckled at him; she already liked this kid, like a little brother.
The bell rang, or screamed really, signaling for class. "I've gotta get to spelling class," Gus picked up the magazine. "See you guys at lunch!" Both Willow and Lucila waved at him. She then turned to Luz.
"Alright, into the darkness and my hair you go." Luz hissed at her before slinking back into the cauldron.
"Oh, don't mind her. She's just messing around," Lucila waved it off.
"So how come you don't have an interest in magic?" Willow looked up at her.
"When my sister asked to stay here, that never meant I would practice. And...I don't know, I just don't have any desire to," Lucila looked away awkwardly. "I'd much rather learn about the logistics behind it without having to actually commit to it."
"Ah. Knowledge without the experience. I can understand that. But just so you know, if you're ever interested, Gus and I will definitely lend a hand," Willow stated, starting to walk.
"Me too!" Luz called out from the cauldron and Lucila just smiled softly at them, especially towards Luz. With her sister practically begging her to practice magic, it was nice to know from her that she would at least support any decision she made.
King was trying to tempt his slug into obeying with treats. "Aw, who's a good Prince Jr? Who's a good guy?"
"Hey, Mr. Wiggles," Eda called out while sitting in a lawn chair, holding a mug. "You're not gonna teach it anything doing that."
"It's called positive reinforcement, Eda," He corrected her. "And it works wonders." The slug ate the treat, growing in size a bit. "Ha ha! See? Now watch this," He held up another one. "Prince Jr! Attack Eda! Knock over her drink! Mess up her hair!" The slug did nothing as it was just eyeing the treat.
"Oh no. Please stop," Eda remarked sarcastically as she didn't even flinch.
"Well, I haven't seen your student in forever. For all we know, she's not even loyal to you anymore," The slug took the treat without King noticing.
"Ha ha ha, you wish," Eda then noticed that neither Lucila or Luz had come back yet. "But yeah. Where is she? Or Lucila for that matter?"
"I hope I pass." Students were going into Abomination 101 class, only those with pink uniforms going in.
"I'm confident about this."
The teacher was presented with one that had too many toes around it, the student smiling nervously. "Hmm. Too many toenails in unexpected places. Fail. Pathetic!" The abomination sunk back into the cauldron. "The biggest abominations are all of you! If the next abomination is a failure, everyone gets extra homework for a month!"
"Oh, man!"
"Extra homework? Not again!"
Amity looked pretty smug from up front and the teacher cleared his throat. "And the next one to come up is..."
"Excuse me, sir," Amity stood up eagerly, her hand raised. "But I am ready to present my abomination. Rise!"
Once hers rose, it struck a pose, the teacher chuckling. "I've always saved the best for last, Amity. You'll have to wait your turn." Lucila's head peeked out from the right side of Willow's hair, and she blew a raspberry at Amity. "How about..." The temporary garden sprite immediately hid again. "Willow?"
The students groaned upon hearing her name. "Not Half-a-Witch."
"Great. Homework for a month."
The girl hid her hair with her hood and Luz peeked out from the cauldron. "Don't listen to them, Willow. We can do this," Luz encouraged with a thumbs up.
"Yeah. They just don't know what they're about to get hit with," Lucila spoke from Willow's hood, and the girl gasped since Lucila needed oxygen.
"Oh, sorry!" She removed her hood. "You must be suffocating in there."
"I'm fine," The sprite assured her. "Just go show these guys that you're not a half witch!" She pumped a fist.
Willow smiled and nodded. She went to the front of the class. "A-Abomination, rise."
Luz jumped out and struck a pose. "Ta-da!" Everyone gasped at her appearance and the fact that it came from Willow, Amity especially shocked.
"Abomination, bow," Willow ordered and she did as instructed.
"Very impressive. But does it speak?"
"Uh, I may be your abomination, but you're my a-mom-ination," Luz held Willow's hand and the girl beamed.
"Aww."
"It's cute."
Amity's mouth was open in disbelief as the teacher started laughing. "A-mom-ination! Splendid wordplay. A plus!" He wrote the grade on Luz's forehead and all the students cheered—except for Amity, who looked very wary about Luz.
"Yay!"
"Go, Willow!"
The two girls smiled at each other.
The bell screamed and then coughed. Willow wheeled Luz out of class and Lucila peeked out from the top of her hair, her hands on her bangs.
"Congratulations, Willow! You deserve this."
"Thanks, Lucila," Willow smiled up at her.
"Wonderful work today, Willow," The sprite flinched and ducked down as the Abominations teacher approached. "Looks like we have a new top student." Amity just happened to be walking out of class when she heard that. She gasped sharply as she dropped her books, and the badge was taken from her.
"Uh, but-!"
The teacher happily handed it over to Willow. "Uh, thank you, sir." He nodded and walked off.
"Hey!" Willow was faced with a furious Amity, gasping by her look. "Last time I saw you, your abomination was mush. What did you do?"
"I, uh, took your pep talk to heart, Amity," Willow adjusted her glasses nervously.
"I bet you did. I've got my eyes on you, Half-a-Witch," Amity backed away while crossing her arms. "That badge is mine." She backed into a student.
"Hey!"
She kept her eyes on Willow the entire time as she went down another hallway. "Uh-oh. I think Amity is onto us," Willow placed a hand on her cheek.
"Don't mind her. She's just jealous," Lucila told her with a small smile. "And besides, you're Top Student now! Bet you didn't think that'd happen, huh?"
"You're right! And I can't thank you guys enough."
Eda slammed the door open, smacking Hooty's face into the wall. "Have you seen Luz or Lucila?" Eda questioned him.
"I heard their tiny mouse feet walking close by. Or that might've been some mice. Anyway, someone started moving in that direction," He tried to point, but he had no hands to do so. Eda stared at him as he hooted.
"Are you trying to point, or...?"
"Look at the weather vane!" He prompted her and she backed away, looking up to see it pointing north.
"But the only thing that way is the..." She gasped in horror. "No." She took off into a run. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!" She arrived at Hexside and went to the window, seeing a kindergarten class.
"Okay, everyone. Recite your runes," The teacher instructed them. "Krom, Zix, Elgrim, Zenomide..."
"No," Eda looked away. "Blind obedience!" She looked into another class by window.
"Heximal system time! Let's get memorizin'!"
"No!" Eda held her head in agony. "Pointless busywork!" She then peeked into one more class to see Luz writing things on paper with Willow, Lucila looking over from the top of Willow's head. "No!" She looked up to the sky. "Why?! School!"
It was now lunchtime, Willow, Gus, and Luz sitting together at the end of a table. Lucila was sitting in front of her sister.
"Hey," Gus reached into his lunch bag. "Do humans eat PB&Js?" He held up a sandwich.
"Oh, my gosh. We haven't eaten real food in so long. Please give me some," Luz stated eagerly and Gus split it in half.
"Oh my god. PB&J—wait, it better not be the crunchy type," She pouted; she preferred smooth peanut butter.
"Smooth type all day!"
"Yes!" She pumped her fists. He then split one half in half, giving one square to Luz and the other to Lucila. She smiled eagerly as she held it in her hands, both of them taking a bite. Lucila closed her eyes in bliss.
"I love creamy peanut butter..." She murmured happily to herself.
"I don't know, Gus," Willow voiced her concerns. "If Amity saw that-"
Amity landed on the table, shocking all of them. Lucila gasped and pretended to fall limp, landing on the table with wide eyes without blinking. She dropped her sandwich nearby. "I saw that! Abominations don't eat! And that...thing was alive!" Amity pointed at Lucila. She went over to the cauldron. "I know you're in there! You can't hide from me!" Students starting looking over at the commotion. "What are you? Who are you?!" Amity picked up Luz and started to shake her. "I want answers!"
She looked down at Lucila and gave a satisfied look. "You!" She picked up Lucila in her hand, squeezing her a bit.
"No!" Willow called out in a panic, holding out a hand.
"You're not any garden sprite, are you? Reveal yourself!" Amity shook the girl rapidly, but she still hadn't moved at all. Not even a flinch or a blink.
"Amity Blight!"
"Huh?" She looked over horrified at the Abomination teacher.
"I suspected a twinge of jealousy, but this, this is just sad," He scolded her.
"But, I—No! Look at them!" She held out Lucila for the teacher to see, but to him, she looked like a doll since she hadn't blinked in a while. Luz did a groan, mimicking an abomination once again.
"Report to Principal Bump's office," The teacher told her.
"But-"
"Now!" He slammed down a fist. "And give Willow back her doll. Clearly it doesn't belong to you."
"Oh, it will," Amity declared quietly, running away from the table and dropping Lucila in the process. Willow held out her hands and caught her in time. Luz rose from the cauldron, glancing at Willow in worry. If Amity wouldn't stop, things would get worse...
"Is my teacher dead?!" Gus questioned as he and Luz peeked over Willow's shoulder.
"She hasn't blinked in a while," Willow frowned a bit.
"Oh! No, don't worry, she's fine. You just have to do this. Boop," She poked Lucila in the eye and she finally reacted as she flinched.
"Um, ow!" She glared up at her sister in slight irritation, pushing away her finger.
"You okay?" Willow asked her in concern and Lucila slowly sat up, finally blinking.
"Oh, that was a close one," She placed a hand on her head, wiping sweat off in relief. "Thank goodness for all those doll games with Luz when she was 10. She always liked dressing me up as Azura and I had to practice acting like a doll to 'immerse myself in the experience'. Practiced not blinking for hours."
"I loved playing that game because you are a doll!" Luz scooped up her sister, nuzzling her cheek. Lucila gave a small smile at the gesture.
"Roll over!" King tossed another treat, pumping a fist. "Yes! Heel!" However, Prince Jr was only interested in the treats King had, rather than actually being obedient. And he had actually grown bigger by the amount of treats given. "Yes, yes!"
Eda came by and he turned to her. "So, did you find your runaway student?" Her arms were crossed as she looked defeated, remembering seeing the two in school. "By your expression, I can tell Luz has gone herself and found someplace else to learn. Lucila too. Which means I have won!" He threw up the box, accidentally throwing the treats. The giant slug snatched them up into his mouth.
"Yes, great, you won," Eda admitted defeat. "You have a giant soldier thing and I have nothing. Congrats!"
"Oh, Eda," He walked up to her, hands behind his back. "Don't say that. At least you have this!" He held out the shame hat for her to wear, laughing in glee. She groaned as she snatched it away, storming off towards the shack.
King continued to laugh, watching her go inside. "I am so funny! Ah. Well, Prince Jr, training complete. Go forth! Make the world tremble at your feet...or worm stubs," He scratched the side of his head. The worm didn't respond to him at all, making him a bit nervous. "Go forth?" Still nothing and that was when he got the hint that he needed the snacks. "Oh, right."
He reached out to the box and grabbed it...only to find it empty. And because Prince Jr was only in it for the snacks...King was in trouble. The worm loomed over him and growled, King whimpering in fear.
"Woo," Luz rose out of the cauldron, stretching her arms. Lucila was sitting on Willow's shoulder. "I'm a sweaty little abomination," She hopped out of it. "But now we don't have to worry about Amity. High five!" She held out her hand to the two, who just glanced at each other in confusion. "Slap my hand," Luz demonstrated for them. "It's a human thing."
"And your first human lesson," Lucila winked at Gus. "We usually do this in celebration when something good happens."
Gus gasped and then stepped forward, slowly slapping Luz's hand. He smiled as he felt like he just high-fived a queen. "Oh. Oh, my. Oh, man, what a rush!"
Lucila laughed at him and then the laughter was ceased by the door slamming open. It was none other than Amity. She flinched so much her hair was shaking and then she zipped into Willow's hair. Her eyes peeked out a bit from the back of Willow's head. Amity stepped back with a grin as she let a man with robes walk in. "Good afternoon, students."
"Principal Bump," Willow stated in shock.
Luz let herself go limp and Principal Bump bent down to her. He grabbed her cheeks, looking her over. "Hmm. Abomination, rise."
Luz nervously got onto her feet. "Abomination, lie."
"Uh, viral fame is a worthy pursuit. Your cat would never eat you if it got the chance. Chemtrails are real-"
"Oh, no, abomination," Bump interrupted her. "How strange for it to get the command wrong. I mean lie down." Luz gave a nervous smile and Amity held up a hand.
"Wait. That's not all. There's also..." She reached out and grabbed Lucila, bringing her out of hiding. The girl yelped as she was face-to-face with Amity. "Her."
"Lucila!" Luz held out a hand.
"Let go of me!" She struggled from Amity's tight grip.
"This isn't an actual garden sprite. They don't look like this. She'll have to be examined too. But thanks for clarifying that you two know each other."
"You can hold onto her while I inspect the abomination," Bump instructed and Amity moved from the doorway to grab her bag. She opened it up and dropped Lucila inside. She fell onto some books hard, since she didn't know how to actually fly.
"No!" Willow and Gus whispered as Lucila looked up in fear. Amity grinned triumphantly as she zipped Lucila away from sight. Luz winced and then lied down on the table.
"So very lifelike." Bump grabbed Willow and brought her forward. "When Miss Blight told me about your abomination, I had to come by, see what she's made of."
"Oh, I-I have her list of ingredients right here," Willow reached into her pocket.
"No," Bump stopped her from doing so. "We were hoping..." He took out a dagger from his robe. "For a close look." Luz looked horrified as it loomed over her face. "Willow, I'll allow you the first cut," He handed it out to her while Amity looked smug. Gus glanced towards her backpack, perking up a bit as he saw it unguarded. He stepped behind her to get it, but she grabbed his arm, stopping him.
"Don't even think about it," She warned him.
Willow took the knife, smiling widely. She then got closer to Luz. "Uh, you can't just cut open a human, can you?" She whispered nervously, and Luz shook her head no. Bump placed a hand on Willow's shoulder.
"Willow, go ahead and make the first incision."
"Wait, Principal Bump!" Gus called out, standing near some cauldrons. "Uh, high five!" He slapped three cauldrons, knocking down the abominations. They rose from the ground, stepping forward. While he and Amity were distracted, he reached down and grabbed the backpack. "Run!"
Willow grabbed Luz's arm and ran off.
"They're getting away!" Amity pointed at the doorway. Gus opened up her backpack and she whipped around to him. "Hey!"
"Be free!"
Lucila jumped out from the backpack. She looked at her wings. "Come on, come on, come on," She flapped them rapidly, taking her off into the air. "Yes!" She flew right past Amity's face, following after the girls. She glanced over her shoulder briefly, sticking out her tongue at Amity, who got red-faced in anger.
"No, the intruders won't get far," Bump walked up to the wall, making a spell circle. He pressed on it and red runes began to spread.
The girls stopped to take a breath. Lucila suddenly flew in between them. "Sis, you're flying?!" Luz asked in shock.
"Actually not that hard once you just think about it," She shrugged at her.
"This is all my fault, Willow. I just wanted to see what a real magic school was like. Well, both of us really, but in different ways." Luz looked down in disappointment. If she hadn't suggested to come here, none of this would've happened.
"Well, how do you like it?" Willow wondered, smiling.
"It's lovely, actually."
The three giggled and Lucila smiled. "Pretty interesting."
"Okay, we should get out of here before-" The runes activated, force-fielding the doors and windows. "Bump seals us in."
"Oh no," Lucila murmured in dismay.
Eda was still in shock when King ran over to the door. "Help me, help me, help me!" He opened it and slammed it close. He then whimpered and jumped into Eda's arms. The door started to bang and she smiled knowingly.
"Trouble with your student?"
"Yes, yes!" He hugged her arm tightly.
The banging started to turn violent. "Are you sure you need my help? Maybe he only wants more of your brilliant lessons."
The slug managed to get through the door, roaring at them. It slid close and grabbed King by his foot. She looked in shock as it started to drag him backwards. "Please help me! You can call me Mr. Wiggles!" He pleaded desperately. Anything was better than this.
She smirked and took off her hat, standing up. She whacked the worm with the stick, causing it to let go of King. He ran back over to her. "Okay, Mr. Wiggles. Here's what we're gonna do," She smirked down at him.
Luz, Willow, and Lucila headed for a door, only for it to be blocked off before they could get in. A shadow loomed over them and they all gasped, turning around to see Bump. He commanded four abominations after them and they took off down the hall, hiding behind a pillar.
"Oh, this is awful," Willow held her cheeks, sliding down a bit. "I don't know what to do. Amity's right. I'm just...Half-a-Witch Willow."
"You're Full-Witch Willow! And you're great," Luz encouraged, placing a hand on her shoulder. "And someone once told me great witches are resourceful."
"Yeah," Lucila looked down at her. "You just have to dig deep and use the magic that you wanna use. Don't think about what anyone else wants, think about what you want to do."
Luz pulled out the slime ball from her pocket. "That's it!" Willow smiled, taking it from her.
"You mean that greasy slime ball?" Luz wondered as the two sisters just looked confused.
"Luz, it's a seed! Thank goodness you had it on you."
"Wait, seriously?" Lucila asked in surprise, raising a brow.
"Yeah," Luz smiled as she remembered that morning. "Thank goodness someone told me to hold on to it." She turned to her sister and they both shared a smile. It seemed as if Eda's methods were not without purpose.
Willow planted the seed on her lap, making a spell circle. They watched as green magic surrounded it. "Please...grow!" Vines sprouted out of the seed, going up to the ceiling. The sisters both ducked as the vines knocked all of the abominations away. It started heading towards Bump and he looked in shock. They grabbed him and smacked him against the ceiling. However, when he opened his eyes, he gasped at all of the pink petals falling down, all the pillars covered in vines. He was honestly amazed by it.
"Remarkable..."
The door to the exit opened because Bump was restrained, and all the ruins disappeared. "There's the exit!"
Luz and Lucila made a run for it, followed by Willow. "Not so fast!" Amity blocked the way out. "I'm not letting you get away so easily. I want my badge!" She threw a vine off her angrily. "And that sprite! Abominations, seize!" The abominations freed themselves, walking up to them. Luz smacked one down and grabbed Willow's arm, running off with her. Lucila flapped her wings faster, glancing over her shoulder to see Amity controlling it after them.
"We need to get to that exit like now!" She called out and an abomination stopped them in their path. The three screamed as they were forced to stop. It stepped forward and Willow spun a spell circle. She made it larger and then blocked it with more vines.
"Get outta here!"
"No! We're not leaving you," Luz defended, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I may get detention, but you'll both get dissected." The abominations from before rose, stepping towards them. "So go!" She waved her arm to capture the two in vines, hovering them over the abominations. Then they were dropped onto the ground, Lucila turning around in worry as the door closed.
"Willow!" Luz called out. "We can't save you right now. But we know someone who can! Come on, sis, hightail it!"
Lucila clenched her fists as she took off after her sister with her wings.
Meanwhile, Eda was facing the giant slug, stepping back as it breathed out lava. She charged forward and smacked it in the face with her staff. She stepped backwards as it slithered forward, and it slid towards her. King was trying to keep a bucket steady from the roof, and it was actually full of salt. Eda drew the worm closer to the door.
"Pour the salt, now!"
"Baby boy!" King looked a bit regretful and the slug whimpered, looking sad...until it roared. "I have no son! Eat salt!" He tossed it into the worm's mouth, the worm turning back to the size it was before, crawling away in fear. "Yes, I did it! I'm amazing!" As he jumped around in victory, he slipped and fell into Eda's arms. He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "You helped too. You are a good teacher."
"I wish Luz thought that too," Eda looked away.
"Edaaaa!" Luz shouted as the two arrived, jumping up and hugging them.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey! What is this? Ugh! I never understand when you do this," Lucila then came into view. "Whoa. What happened to you?"
"Long story, but we don't have time for it," Lucila waved her hands.
"Your lesson worked! Keeping junk in my pocket saved my life," Luz told her quickly, holding her cheeks. "But wait. Our new friends. They're in danger."
"Luuuuuuz! Lucilaaaaa!" Willow shouted, similar in the way that Luz did. Willow and Gus hugged her.
"Hey," Lucila pouted at Willow as she wanted a hug too.
"Oh my gosh, I almost forgot!" Willow waved a finger and poofed Lucila back to normal. She sighed in relief as she patted herself.
"Finally back to being me."
Luz pulled her in and they had a group hug. "Seriously, what—what is that? What is going on right now?"
Willow pulled away, hands on Luz's shoulders as they all ignored Eda. "You won't believe it, guys. Everything is perfect now!"
"It's true, I don't believe it."
"Yeah, what happened? I thought you'd get in trouble," Lucila stated in confusion.
"Principal Bump was so impressed by my plant work, he's switching me to the plant magic track! Look!" She pulled back and snapped her fingers, spinning around. Her uniform changed from pink to green.
"Yes!" Luz cheered happily for her, spinning her around into a hug.
"That's so great, Willow!" Lucila clapped and then the younger Noceda remembered something.
"Oh...what about Amity?"
"Last we saw, she was asking Bump if today could count as extra credit," Gus explained to them, earning a scoff from Lucila.
"Well, I can't wait to see you in action next time I sneak in," Luz grinned, clasping her hands together. Willow winced, staring at Gus.
"What?" Lucila raised a brow.
"Uh...about that," Gus had a hand in his pocket. "You're kinda...sorta..." He held up a scroll. "Banned." He revealed the poster of them both.
"That's my girl!" Eda pumped her fists, Lucila facepalming at her.
"But we could come here and teach you what we learned," Willow offered Luz.
"Aw. That would be nice. But...I have a pretty great teacher already," She smiled up at Eda, who gave a look of shock.
"Yeah, that's right. Luz is my student!" Eda grabbed the poster. "Back off, academy twerps." The four laughed at her and she held it up proudly. "Oh! Baby's first wanted poster. Good job, kid. Looks like I taught you something after all," She patted Luz on the head.
"Not something I'd encourage, Eda," Lucila looked away.
"Don't think I forgot about you," Eda patted her head next.
"Ah! No!" Lucila groaned a bit at being complimented for getting banned...
"Uh, you high five with your hands, not your head," Gus corrected them. Lucila shook her head, crossing her arms with an amused smile.
"Another thing of human life that I have to teach you."
"You're a teacher now?" Eda teased her, hands on her hips.
"Hey, I might as well do something other than explore the Boiling Isles while I'm here," She smirked, hands on her hips. "Gus, get ready to take notes, because you're getting a bunch of information on your next lesson."
He blinked and then pulled out a notepad, grinning widely. "Every fiber in my being was prepared for this moment."
