They marveled at the sight in front of them. Once they took it all in, the crew began to cheer, running towards the gold. Jim, Ari, Ben, Morph, and Silver remained near the portal.
"The loot of a thousand worlds..." He murmured as all they saw was treasure. Gold coins, gems, and knick-knacks were everywhere.
"We are going to need a bigger boat!" Onus called out from the amount of it all, laughing. The whole 'centroid' of the planet was filled to the brim with the treasure. Silver seemingly ignored the four in favor of the treasure.
"This is all seeming very familiar," Ben rubbed the side of his head. Jim looked to the side and saw an old ship with some gold in it. "I can't remember why." Jim ignored him as he glanced to Silver, who still hadn't noticed them as he was walking forward.
"Ben, Ari, come on," Jim nudged them and led the group over to the ship. Ari gave a nervous look towards her boots and then Silver. If he heard her boots, they'd be done for trying to escape back to Delbert and Amelia. Jim noticed her hesitance and picked her bridal style. She barely had time to react as they made their way over to the boat. "We're getting out of here, and we're not leaving empty-handed." He slid down a small hill of coins with Ari.
"But-but Jimmy! Jimmy! Ari!" Ben stammered, trying to warn them, but he still couldn't remember of what. And the two still ignored him.
Silver bent down on his knees to the treasure. "A lifetime of searching." He slowly scooped some into his hands, close to crying. "And at long last...I can touch it!" He grinned at the treasure in his hands.
"Do you know what's strange?" Ben asked them as they reached the ship. Jim bent down and cupped his hands together. Ari stepped on them and he threw her upwards. She flipped and landed inside the ship. She reached out and he jumped so she could grab his hand. "I can't tell you how frustrating this is, guys," He voiced his concerns a Jim reached out and hoisted him in. "Cause there's something just—it's nagging at the back of my mind. Aah!" He shrieked and landed on the ship flat on his stomach.
"Whatever it is, you can tell us later. Right now, let's just focus on getting back to our friends," Ari waved it off and then paused as she looked up ahead, screaming and jumping backwards. Jim looked in her direction as well, catching the girl in his arms. She did a double take up ahead.
"Captain Flint?" They murmured in unison.
"In the flesh!" Ben paused as it wasn't really Flint, just his skeleton because of course he didn't live to stand in front of them. "Well...s-sort of, except for skin, organs or anything that—that...that resembles flesh, that's not there."
Ari saw something from one of the hands and she squinted at it. She walked forward, Jim joining her side while Ben kept rambling. "A-And yet, it's so odd, you know? I mean, I remember there was something horrible Flint didn't want anyone else to know, but I-I just can't remember what it was."
Once the lights flashed, they saw something in the skeleton's left hand. "You can go get it," Jim teased her and she shook her head rapidly.
"Jim. Jim, no, don't make me go near that thing," She waved her hands rapidly. The skeleton looked freaky to her, so she didn't want to be any nearer than she already was. He smirked and pushed her forward a bit, earning a scream. "No!" She smacked his arm as he laughed and she pouted.
"It was just a joke, Ari," He assured her, taking the hand and breaking apart the fingers. He held whatever Flint was holding; it looked like copper and metal plating.
"Oh, a mind is a terrible thing to lose!" Ben wailed and they stared at the object. They then looked over to the back of Ben's head as he was sobbing, looking at the wires.
"Ben, I think we just found your mind!" Jim grinned and he walked forward. Ari grabbed Ben's head. "Hold still."
"This might pinch a little," Ari grinned as well.
"Aah! Ari, your hands are very, very cold-" The panel attached to the back of his head on its own, connecting the wires to it. His head spun from the missing piece being inserted, Ari letting go of him. "Whoa!" Numbers flashed in his eyes before he blinked, and then they were suddenly blue. "Hello." He sounded less spastic than he did before. "You know, Jimmy, Ari, I was just thinking..."
The two smiled knowingly at each other. "I was just think—it's all flooding back! All my memories!"
"...And my hands aren't that cold," Ari raised a confused brow, looking at her hand.
"Right up until Flint pulled my memory circuits, so I could never tell anybody about his booby trap!"
"Wait, wait, wait, booby trap? There's a booby trap here?!" Ari exclaimed in surprise. Just as she asked that question, a bright light flashed and they whipped their heads upwards.
"Speaking of which..."
Down below, Silver and his crew looked up in confusion. The walls started to explode within.
"Oh...that booby trap..." Ari gulped nervously as she and Jim looked up in fear.
"Flint wanted to make sure that nobody could ever steal his treasure so he rigged the whole planet to blow higher than a Kalespian kite!" Ben explained quickly.
A large pole that was from the ceiling fell off and directly hit the treasure. The ground split open to reveal lava underneath. A large laser beam started to cut through the planet, some of the crew starting to flee.
"Run, guys! Run for your life!" Ben shouted and Ari gasped. She turned around and grasped Jim by the shoulders.
"Delbert and Amelia. They're still tied up outside of the portal!" She told him in concern. "And they're still guarded, we have to warn them!" He reached out and touched her hands with his, giving her a determined look.
"You guys go back and help the captain and Doc!" Jim told them, rushing over to the control panel to hot-wire it. "If I'm not there in 5 minutes, leave without me."
"Jim..." Ari whispered quietly, conflicted. If she insisted on staying, she might lose Amelia, but if she left, she might lose Jim...She clenched her fists in hope. Amelia had proven to her time and time again that she could take care of herself, no matter how weakened she was. As a First Mate, it was Ari's duty to make sure all of her crew was okay. So she had to put faith in her Captain right now, just like Amelia was doing with her.
She grabbed Jim's hand and he looked up at her in confusion. "I'm First Mate, remember? So right now...I'm acting Captain for Amelia. And...like a good Captain, a First Mate needs to put her faith in the people that they're surrounded. So...I'm gonna stay here with you while Ben goes to help her and Delbert. No if, ands, or buts."
He smiled at her and pulled her down over to the control panel. She crawled underneath to join him, Ben grabbing their boots.
"I am not leaving my buddies!" Ben yelled, dragging them out into the open. Jim was holding two sparking wires while Ari was holding a hairpin that she had used to open up the panel. And both of them had glares that said it all for Ben. "...Unless they look at me like that."
"Yeah, good answer," She remarked thinly and he laughed nervously.
"Bye, Jim! Bye, Ari!" Ben let go of their legs, running off.
Treasure fell into the lava as the laser beam was cutting into the ground still. "No!" Silver yelled in desperation. "No! Oh, no! Oh, no! No!" He tried to scoop it up in a panic, but unfortunately couldn't as it was moving too fast. Two pirates grabbed a chest and tried to run off with it, but they slipped and fell directly into the lava.
Silver turned around and noticed the rest of the crew leaving towards the portal without any treasure. "Come back here, ya blighters!" He screamed and then heard a noise. He finally noticed the large pirate ship with treasure in it that had not fallen off. He used his cyborg eye to get a closer look, noticing Jim and Ari in the ship alone, trying to start it up. He flinched and then smirked at the opportunity.
Meanwhile, outside the inside of the planet, Amelia felt the rumbling from the explosions. Delbert ignored it, however, since he looked a little down.
"All my life, I dreamed of an adventure like this," He spoke up, sighing. "I'm just sorry I couldn't have been...more helpful to you."
Amelia shook her head. "Oh, don't be daft. You've been very helpful. Truly."
Delbert sighed in frustration. "I feel like such a useless weakling," He covered his free hands with his eyes. He paused as he realized he was free. "With abnormally thin wrists." She glanced back at him in confusion and he quickly hid his hands behind him. "Excuse me, brutish pirate."
The guard belched in return and turned around to him. "Yes, you. I have a question. Is it that your body is too massive for your teeny-tiny head, or is it that your head is too teeny-tiny for your big, fat body?" Amelia looked surprised at his insult and so did the pirate. He stomped forward, grabbing Delbert by the collar.
"I pummel you good!" He lifted up Delbert higher.
"Yes, I'm sure you will, but before you do, I have one more question," He pointed a gun at the alien's belly, smirking. "Is this yours?"
"Uhh..."
Ari hit the control panel hard and it started up the engine. "Oh! Finally!" She cheered and Jim laughed, picking her up and spinning them around.
"Alright First Mate Ari!" He kissed her cheek and put her down. "I love you!" Her mouth opened wide as he raced over to the wheel, grabbing it. She lifted up a hand to her cheek, smiling softly at him. "Yes! Guys, we are so out of here!" Morph cackled in victory.
"Ah, Jimbo! Lass!"
They whipped around to Silver, who jumped into the boat. "Aren't you two wonders of the universe?" He laughed, getting closer to Ari. She slowly stepped back and Jim grabbed a blade from the ground. He quickly stood in front of her bravely.
"Get. Back!" He snarled and Silver stopped, inches away from the blade. He looked down at the ground before facing them again.
"...I like ya, lad, lass, but I've come too far to let you stand between me and me treasure." He walked up to the two and they stepped back, both of them hitting the wheel. Ari gripped Jim's arm from behind, glaring at Silver.
"My father died for me to get to this point. And I'm not gonna let you take that away from me," She declared, Silver pausing. Before he could react, the laser shot through the ship. They were all thrown from it. Silver managed to grab the side of the ship, but the other two hit a ledge. Jim slipped off it and Ari managed to grab onto it, dangling from the edge. Jim flew into another wall, grabbing a pattern that stuck from it.
"JIM!" She screamed from her spot and he looked up.
"ARI!" He shouted in horror to see her dangling too. She looked down and sweated nervously from the lava. Her hands then started to slip.
"No, no, no, no, no...!" She begged herself to hold on.
Silver gripped the boat in his hand, when the laser started to get further into it. "Oh no, you don't!" He yanked the boat with all of his might to get it away from the beam. He pulled it closer, standing on two feet. Morph flew over to him in a panic, chattering.
"What?"
Morph pointed and he looked down with his cyborg eye to see Jim dangling. He then looked down further to see Ari struggling to pull herself back up and failing. "Jimbo. Lass." He made his robotic arm into a claw so that he could make his way over to Ari first. "Reach for me now. Can you grab Jimbo with your leg?"
She turned around to him and he held out his hand. She extended her leg carefully, but that made it worse as she almost lost her grip. "Aah!" She screamed, dangling from the edge, now even more closer to falling. "He's too far, I can't reach him! I'm gonna fall!"
"No you won't, lass! Just hold on!"
She squeezed her eyes shut, looking away as she reached out just a little farther. "Reach!" However, she reached too far out and she slipped, falling. She let out a scream, but Jim bent down and grabbed her by her leg. She sighed in relief, looking down at the lava nervously.
"Swing her towards me."
He tried, but she missed his hand. "I...I can't get us far enough!" The ledge he was gripping slipped and they fell farther. They only stopped when he gripped another one.
"Jim! Let me go! I'm too heavy!" She looked up at him.
"NEVER!" He declared firmly, her boot starting to slip. Silver looked between them and the treasure. He couldn't hang onto it, and the two would fall if he didn't do something now.
"I.." His claw wasn't too long, either. He sighed in defeat. "Oh, blast me for a fool!" He let go of the boat, sliding over to the two, who fell right there and then. Silver slid and grabbed Jim by the hand. Ari reached up and grabbed Jim's other hand, her boot falling into the lava. She let out a long sigh of relief. He swung them up onto the platform and they climbed back up.
Ari wiped the sweat from her forehead, staring at Silver. "Silver...thank you," She breathed out, feeling like she could trust him for now.
Their relief was brief, however, as the ship in front of them exploded.
