Hell's Kitchen

"Seven years Murdock. Seven years you cost me, and my Vanessa. But while you got sloppy and lazy, I grew stronger."

Matt Murdock didn't need eyesight to see the smug grin on Fisk's face. He could hear it in his voice.

"Funny. Last time I checked, I was 175. You're what...500? 550? Metric ton?"

That last quip cost him, the blow to the side of his head leaving his ears ringing. He'd feel that tomorrow. If he had a tomorrow. He really needed to stop hanging out with Parker. The kid was a bad influence.

"I'm pure muscle. But I also know how to use my mind. It's why the entire world knows your secret, why I was able to become Mayor despite my supposed criminal record and it's how I was able to find your wife."

Matt smelled her perfume before he heard her voice.

"Get your hands off me you piece of-"

"Now, now Mrs. Murdock. Mind your manners."

"Let her go Fisk. This has nothing to do with her!"

"You are in no position to make demands, and make no mistake...This has everything to do with her! After all, how much trouble can a man in a costume be if he's broken with no one to patch him up?"

"Fisk, I swear if you harm her I'll kill you. Then I'll burn your world to ashes." He said angrily, pushing up on his hands. He had to stand, had to fight. He couldn't die on his knees, couldn't let his wife pay for his war with Fisk.

"You already did. Vanessa is dead because you put her in jail."

"I didn't force her to take over your operations. I didn't force her into your world. Her blood is on your hands!"

"And now your wife's blood will be on yours."

Matt could only look on helplessly, his radar sense giving him an image of the scene in front of him. He heard the gun in Fisk's hand as the hammer was cocked, and heard Claire's heartbeat accelerate. Her head turned toward him, and then the gun went off.

"CLAIRE!"

"And now, the coup de grace."

There was a second gunshot, and Matt Murdock joined his love in death.

Location Unknown

Claire's eyes opened, and she shook her head. That was the last time she went out drinking with Trish and Jessica.

"Claire!"

An instant later Matt's arms were around her, embracing the woman he loved. The woman he had just heard die.

"Matt? Then that wasn't a nightmare. We really did-"

"Die? Yes you did."

As one the two turned, seeing a bald man in a blue robe standing.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Matt asked, instinctively reaching for the billy club that had been his primary weapon for so many years. However, he felt only empty air. That was when he realized he wasn't in costume. He was in a suit, as though he was going to court. But more importantly...He could see.

He turned to Claire, feeling tears well up in his eyes. He could see her. Dark hair, caramel skin. Brown eyes.

"You are so beautiful. More beautiful than I ever realized." He said, kissing her hard on the mouth.

"You can see?" She asked, and he nodded.

"I can see. My God, radar sense doesn't do you justice."

"How?"

"Call it a gift. I'm already breaking pretty much every rule in the book. What's one more? You asked who I was and what I wanted Matthew Murdock. My name is Uatu, but I am better known as the Watcher. It is my solemn duty to watch events as they unfold, but never to interfere. However, I could not stand by and watch this. The death of you and your wife would lead to the end of everything. You Daredevil are the Kingpin's greatest adversary. You keep him held at bay. If you are gone, his grip on power will be assured, and he will use that power to destroy the other heroes in your city. You Claire Temple Murdock, are equally as important. Your work as a healer for heroes is invaluable. Many times, your aid has been what has prevented them from succumbing to their wounds."

"I'm just-"

"Just as much a hero as the rest of us, if not moreso." Matt said with a smile.

"Now as for what I want. I want to give you a second chance at life. A chance to prevent your deaths as well as the deaths of others. A chance to right wrongs. I have the ability to send you back to your younger bodies, back to the night you first met."

"I'm guessing there's a catch." Matt said.

"Very good counselor. The catch is that this second chance will not be free. Things will not play out the same as they did before. Friends and enemies may not be as cut and dry as they were before."

"And you won't tell us what the changes are?" Claire asked, and Uatu shook his head.

"Alas, that I cannot do. However, there are two things I will do for you. First, you will both have your memories of the previous timeline. Secondly, you will be able to see Claire Matt. The rest of the world will be as it was, but she will be to you as she is now."

"What happens if we say no?" Matt asked quietly. He could tell by looking at Claire that she was thinking about taking the offer. He was too. A second chance sounded amazing, but ever the lawyer, he had to ask the question.

He immediately wished he hadn't. A screen materialized in front of them. New York was in flames. He saw Foggy and Karen's mangled bodies on the street. Luke, Jessica, Danny, Peter...all of them were dead. And standing above it all was Wilson Fisk.

"We'll do it." Claire said, tearing her eyes from the screen. Matt nodded solemnly.

"Very well. Good luck."

The Watcher snapped his fingers, and the two disappeared. He only hoped they would succeed against the challenges that lay ahead.
