Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, just my imagination and inklings :).
A/N: Thank you so much for your reviews. They are much appreciated. I enjoy reading them very much.
This is a sequence between Harry and Ginny. I wrote what I felt were some of the most obvious anti H/G sentiments. I cannot imagine Harry marrying a woman based on chest monsters and trysts in the broom closet. I always believed that what H/Hr shared were the most profound and meaningful throughout the series. Please let me know your thoughts :).
In Dreams
It has been days and weeks since the war ended. The wizarding world is still celebrating the victory against the Dark Lord. Loud boisterous festivities happened in every corner of Diagon Alley. Everyone seems happy and cheerful, discussing the end of the Dark Era. People shopped, played, and attended parties. Only Harry remains melancholy. He could not bring himself to celebrate with the others as Hermione's life is still hanging in the balance.
Ron has visited Harry and Hermione a few times at Grimmauld's place. He has started working at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes with George. Although his family too has suffered losses in this war, they were thankful that the majority of them have survived compared to other families with greater loss.
Initially, Ron came over fairly often. He too offered his condolences to Harry regarding Hermione's state of health. But, seeing no changes in Hermione's condition, and unable to ascertain whether she will wake up eventually, Ron's attendance lessened as the months went by. Business at Weasley's Wizard Wheezes has been booming, Ron often had to stay late to attend to the guests and customers.
What irritated Harry greatly was not seeing Ron, but another younger Weasley. Ginny has stopped by quite often at Grimmauld's place as well. Although she maintained a careful facade of checking in on Harry and Hermione, Harry suspected that she had other matters on her mind other than her concern for their health and well being.
It is true, Ginny's fan-girl crush on Harry had not lessened, but increased to greater heights by the downfall of the Dark Lord. Although she had not been by his side throughout his quest and dangerous missions, she imagined herself to be his predestined, to be his one and only. She constantly reminded him regarding the state of uncertainty of the status of their relationship. She wanted to see whether Harry wanted to patch things up, to before their infamous breakup at Dumbledore's Funeral.
This has been the last thing on Harry's mind. For so long, Harry had been preoccupied with far more important things such as the safety and future of the wizarding world. When the Dark Lord has finally been defeated, Harry's primary concern is the health and well being of his female best friend. The thought of Hermione in danger, the fear of Hermione never waking up, has consumed all of his waking moments that he has little interest in other matters.
For one, Harry secretly had not wanted to patch things up with Ginny. Their romance had ended almost as quickly as it started. The sparks and fireworks fizzled out as abruptly as they had started. Their relationship which came from nowhere and likely is going nowhere. Most importantly, is because Ginny could never understand Harry as deeply as she likes. She could imagine herself to be his chosen one, but she could never walk into his soul the way he imagined his other half should. Primarily, because Ginny had not been there for him. In no way, shape or form, had Ginny shared any profound substantial moments with him. She had not been by his side during his entire quest against Lord Voldemort, something which Harry will have to shoulder for the rest of his life. She could never understand the trauma he has suffered and is most likely ill equipped to deal with the consequences that followed. Has there ever been mutual understanding between them? Any deep meaningful conversation? A linking between the hearts? If what Harry shared with Cho were tears and dreary conversations about Cedric Diggory, what Harry shared with Ginny were chest monsters, raging hormones and fickle adolescent trysts. It was as fleeting as it started, and sizzled into meaningless nothingness as it ended.
But Ginny cannot read Harry's mind, nor can he read hers apparently. Because there has never been any mutual understanding between them. She appears persistently to try to win him back, while he tries adamantly to dissuade her while not hurting her feelings. After all, she is his best friend's little sister. He does not want to cause a rift with the Weasleys.
What angered Harry the most is Ginny's careless attitude towards Hermione. Initially, Ginny appeared at Grimmauld's place to offer her condolences to Hermione. However, it quickly escalated to a one sided cat-fight as Ginny attempts to diminish Hermione's place in Harry's heart.
"Just let her stay at St. Mungos; I don't know why you insisted on letting her stay at Grimmauld's Place." Ginny whined.
"You are a hero Harry, and always in the public's eye. What is everyone going to think that you're living with another woman who is not your girlfriend?" Ginny added.
"If we're going to start a family soon, what are you going to do with Hermione? Do you want our children to live with an invalid?" Ginny asked flippantly.
A surge of anger fired through Harry's stomach. Ginny has said some awful things to Hermione while they were dating in Harry's sixth year. Harry can never forget the look of surprise and sorrow in Hermione's eyes when Ginny disparaged Hermione's lack of skills and understanding in quidditch. But Harry, at the time, had been under the influence of his raging sixteen year old hormones and obsessed with trysts with Ginny in the broom closet. He had not defended his best friend. But thinking back on this, Harry had always felt quite guilty that he had let Hermione take the unnecessary hit.
"Hermione is important to me Gin-" Harry said firmly, "There is nothing more important than her health. She is staying at Grimmauld's place because it is the best place for her to recover. We're close to St. Mungos in case there is an emergency. The healers can floo over anytime. I care about her Gin-. She has been there for me through and through. Did you know what her final words to me were?
I'll go with you Harry.
She offered to follow me to death as I was about to face Voldemort for the last time. No one has ever said far more important words. If she was willing to follow me to certain death, then I am willing to lead her back to an uncertain life. I am willing to wait for as long as I need. If not forever. I do not care what others think about our living situation. I cannot imagine starting a family with anyone at the moment. I'm just not ready for this sort of thing. Unless Hermione recovers, I cannot imagine doing anything else but staying by her side. Anything else is out of the question at the moment." Harry said with conviction.
Hermione twitched in her sleep, as if she had heard everything.
A/N: What I hated about Harry's relationship with Cho and Ginny were how both girls felt threatened by Hermione's presence in Harry's life. Cho cried and accused Harry of favoring Hermione. Ginny was downright catty and outrageous when she belittled Hermione about quidditch. Neither girl had admirable qualities or personalities to match. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks for reading :)!
