SECRET ORIGINS PART 8 – Entrapta
Wayne Enterprises, Advanced Science Division, Gotham City, 2021
Bruce Wayne had arrived at the request of his close friend and confidant, Lucius Fox, to discuss a new employee who was starting work today. "Lucius, good to see you again. So what are we dealing with?" He asked, shaking his friend's hand.
Lucius smiled and walked Bruce into the labs. "She's pretty young, but an absolute prodigy with technology and science." He began. "Her name's Emily Dryl, About 19 years old and already has multiple degrees. Sounds like she skipped a buncha grades. Kid's a Genius." he explained, showing her file to Bruce, who skimmed through it. "Though I'm going to warn you ahead of time Mr. Wayne. She can be….eccentric." He opened the door, and the two were immediately greeted by crashing noises and a young woman with deep purple hair, styled into twintails that were the length of her entire body. She was wearing a gray Engineer outfit under a white lab coat practically tearing the room apart looking for something.
"Um...Miss Dryl?" Bruce began.
"Yeah yeah hiya Mr. Wayne. Kinda busy right now, can't find a six-sided Hex Driver!" Emily yelled out, suddenly balancing on her massive Twintails and looking over a top shelf.
Bruce, completely silently, grabbed the tool she was looking for. "Is this what you were after?"
Emily's hair then snatched the tool out of his hands as she gleefully cheered. "Thanks! This table leg is loose, gotta adjust it." She explained, kneeling down and tightening the bolt on the Table leg. "Thanks Mr. Wayne. Nice to meet you by the way."
Bruce looked her over. "How is your hair doing that?" he asked.
Emily looked up and raised her welding mask. "Oh! I got sick of running out of hands while working so I injected myself with nanomachines, turned my hair into new hands!" She said with a super cheery tone of voice and flashing a massive grin. "OH! I wanted to show you something!" she suddenly yelled, rushing across the room and using her hair to slide herself under a table. "I had been sketching out new schematics for upgrading the Bat mobile-"
Bruce was shocked at what she said and spoke up, "I beg your pardon, Ms. Dryl?"
Emily poked her head out from under the table. "Oh, I noticed Batman was using a lot of Wayne Tech, hacked the database to see if anything was off the records missing and managed to piece together your identity. I always respected Batman." she cheerily explained, before clapping her hands over her mouth. "OH CRAP! Sorry I forgot, you have a secret identity because you wanna keep it secret! Don't worry, I ONLY told you and Lucius I know. Is Lucius too many people?" She asked in a panic, and Bruce sighed, switching to his more serious voice.
"No it's….not ideal but Lucius already knows. As long as you can keep it under wraps then I don't see a problem. Just keep it quiet, understood?" he explained. Emily nodded and gave a salute with her hair. "I'm honestly amazed you managed to hack my computers, they have the best firewall system in the world. Now, about these upgrades?"
"Oh yeah one sec! Also it wasn't easy to hack you." She noted, sliding under the table again.
"I did warn you she was eccentric." Lucius deadpanned, chuckling.
Bruce gave him a look, "Lucius, considering the kind of people I deal with on a daily basis, I'll take her eccentricity any day"
Emily soon emerged and showed off some sketches of what appeared to be a freaking TANK. "I call it the Tumbler! The idea is a big bulletproof bat-tank that can safely roll on itself, complete with the driver's seat being able to separate as a bike-style pod, and it has a BIG cannon on top!" She excitedly explained.
Bruce was impressed, but less than impressed with the weapon. "I don't use Guns Emily." he replied, stoically.
Emily looked confused. "It's not a gun, it's a cannon. Besides, I was just thinking you could use it to break into heavily fortified hideouts. And it also has rubber bullet firing chambers on the front, y'know for disabling people and popping tires." she explained, pointing out each feature. "And a grapple in the front, letting you two things. Whatcha think?" She gave Bruce a big, hopeful smile.
"I admit, it's a good, solid design. You've thought of everything." Bruce admitted, passing the sketches to Lucius. "See if we can work with this Lucius." Lucius nodded and left the room, and Bruce turned to Emily, hands in his pockets. "You've been doing a lot of tinkering. Why don't you show me what you've made so far."
Emily's eyes practically sparkled and ran over to another workbench. "Alright! Take your pick! I've got glue grenades, a grapple with a built in taser, a wrist mounted launching device, betcha your batarangs could work in it, um lets see..." She kept digging though her work while Bruce was examining the prototypes. "OH I also thought why not fill your smoke bombs with knockout gas? Or maybe-" Emily began rambling off on a number of the gadgets she'd sketched or actually prototyped, and Bruce was honestly super impressed.
"I have to say, Emily, if I didn't know any better I'd say you wanted to be a hero." he commented, and suddenly Emily was right in his face, her eyes lit up with happiness.
"Do you really think I can?!" she asked.
"Well….likely. But the kind of work I do is very dangerous-" Bruce attempted to explain.
"Can't be more dangerous than the labs. The amount of experiments that blew up in my face." she quipped. "I'll need a suit, I'll need a name, ooh I betcha some of these gadgets can work!" She was off again, and Bruce sighed. She would definitely be a useful employee, but the girl was also gonna be a handful.
Several Weeks Later:
Emily stood on a rooftop in Gotham, decked out in her brand new outfit. It was a lightweight, metal armor similar to the Batsuit, but in a gray color with lilac highlights, and no cape. It covered her entirely, save for her face, which she wore her usual welding mask over. She had taken the time to wire the eyes of the mask to glow red, as a means of intimidating bad guys. She wore a utility belt filled to the brim with the various gadgets she had designed herself. She stood proudly and leapt off the roof, using her Twintailes to climb between buildings, while seeking crime to stop. "This is AWESOME!" She happily yelled out, before hearing what sounded like sirens in the distance. Rushing over, she saw police in pursuit of a car, gunfire trading between the vehicles. "It's hero time!" she said, activating her suit's jet boosters and flying after the car.
The thugs in the car were relative nobodies, trying to fence stolen goods when they ran into the cops. "I told you this was a bad idea man! What if the Bat shows up!" the driver yelled out.
"Shut up and drive!" the passenger replied, firing on the police. Both were shaken out of their argument by a loud thump on the car, and looking at the windshield, they saw Emily, saluting them and sitting on the hood. "Who the fuck is THAT?!" The gunner yelled, taking aim before Emily slapped a device on the car, forcing the engine to cut and the car to screech to a stop, shaking the two up as she leapt over it, guiding herself with her twintails.
The Driver scrambled out of the car first, before being struck in the back by a device which encased him in a vice-grip, and sent a brief shock through his body. The Gunner growled and fired at Emily, who replied by bringing up a forcefield to block the bullets. "The hell?"
"Oh do you like it? It's a ballistics forcefield, lets me block bullets, though the battery's a bit low." she said, firing her grapple into his shoulder and sending a shock through it.
As he collapsed, shaking he squeaked out a faint, "Who the hell are you."
Emily posed dramatically and smiled. "I'm Entrapta! Get it? Because I entrap villains- wow that sounds really lame saying it out loud. Aw whatever, I'll own it." She said, as the police moved in.
An officer approached her, "Hey thanks, it's always good to see new heroes in this screwed up town."
"Happy to help!" Emily replied, flying off laughing. "This was so much fun!" As she flew, the communicator she had installed just in case started to beep. "What the? Am I expecting a call?" She wondered, answering it.
"Well, I was about to contact Robin to help with that chase, but it seems you had it under control." a female voice said, slightly distorted.
"Who is this? How'd ya see that? How'd you call me? Did you hack me?" Emily asked, prompting a giggle from the other end.
"You can call me Oracle. I saw it on the street cameras, I'm linked into nearly every single camera on earth from my base. And yes, I did hack your communications. I wanted to meet Gotham's newest superhero. Batman told me about you Ms. Dryl." the voice explained as Emily landed on a roof and sat on the ledge.
Emily was about to squee, this woman clearly knew her computers. "Cool! So you must be a friend of Mr. Wayne's, it's very nice to meet you Oracle. That is SUCH a cool title." she said.
"Well, my real name is Barbara if you're wondering. I figure it's only fair that you know who I am considering I know you." Oracle replied, "I used to be out there all the time with Batman. I went by Batgirl back in the day."
"You seem really good with computers- wait you USED to be Batgirl?" Emily asked, beginning to trace Oracle's signal to meet the mysterious hacker in person, and began to fly over to her.
"I had a bad encounter with Gotham's resident psychotic clown, ended up having to retire afterward." Barbara replied, a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Well, I'm coming to visit if that's alright! I traced your call already." Emily said, landing at a clock-tower.
"Well now, you really ARE a genius aren't you." Barbara replied, with amusement, as she let Emily in. Emily quickly ran inside and was immediately greeted by a MASSIVE computer system monitoring the whole city, and even several places worldwide. She was shocked at how much Oracle had to work with. "I can see you're impressed." Barbara replied, entering the room….in a wheelchair. Emily went wide-eyed at the sight of the red-headed woman in her wheelchair and felt pity for her. "I did say I had a bad run-in with the Joker. Shot me right in the spine. I can't walk anymore."
"I am so sorry to hear that Barbara. Oh man..." Emily replied, at a loss for words.
"While I miss being out in active duty, I don't let my injury force me to retire." Barbara told her, smiling and wheeling over. "Have a seat, I made some coffee, do you want any?"
Emily shook her head, sitting down in a swivel chair, "Nah, never touched the stuff. Tastes gross. If I knew I'd be making a new friend I'd have brought some of my tiny cupcakes." she said, sheepishly.
"A new friend huh?" Barbara said, pouring herself a coffee. "We only just met Emily."
"Yeah but I like you Barbara, you're obviously SUPER smart, and I love working with computers and science stuff." Emily replied, spinning on the chair.
"Well, I have to say you impressed me earlier. Did you make all your stuff yourself then?" She asked Emily, sipping her coffee.
"Yep! It was a pain in the butt getting the materials, and figuring out what the right tools for the job were, but it's all made by me." Emily replied. "So whatcha do here Barbara?"
"I act as surveillance and information gathering for Batman and the Justice League. I'm the eyes and ears of the Bat family." Barbara explained, a bit of smugness in her voice.
"Well, I've got nothing to do tonight, If it's alright, I'm gonna run home and go bake some of my tiny cupcakes! Wanna hang out if I bring them?" Emily asked, jumping up quickly.
"Go right ahead." Barbara said with a smile, "I'm going to be helping Batman, Robin and the new Batgirl with patrols tonight anyway, I'll be here all night."
Emily waved and left the clock-tower, flying off and pleased with herself for making a brand new friend. She was gonna love this hero thing after all.
