Special Shoutout for those who dropped a review for this story! I'm loving writing the Mikaelsons and hopefully am capturing their voices and personalities well.

Chapter 5:

Eloise was just popping her keys into her bag when Elijah greeted her. He had been leaning against the bottom of the steps to the entrance of her apartment building. Despite her exhaustion, she smiled at the sight of him.

"Morning," she said, shifting her bag to her other shoulder.

"Good morning, Eloise," he put a large paper cup of coffee in her hand, along with her keys he had used to lock up her apartment after she had fallen asleep. "I noticed you were out and thought you might need this after your late night."

"Oh, bless you," Eloise said, gratefully. She put the keys in her bag and then gripped the coffee cup. "I overslept and I wasn't going to have time to run into the shop and...I do need this...desperately." She ran her hands through the end of her hair and then took a long sip of coffee. "Gosh, this is really good. I'm a bit picky about my coffee."

"I wouldn't expect anything less from you," He chuckled at her, "And from my brother Niklaus." He dangled a white paper bag in front of her. "Beignets."

"Oh, gosh, that makes my Friday," Eloise's eyes widened, reaching for them. "Tell him thank you for me."

"I will do so," he gestured with his head, "Come, you are late."

"Oh crap, you're right," Ella looked down at her watch and started walking with him at a quicker pace, "I should have never made a date on a Thursday night to begin with. Just crazy of me."

"My sister said she would pick you up and you and her can figure out your attire for tonight."

"Rebekah?" Eloise looked shocked.

"Yes, I only have one sister," Elijah said, amused.

"Yes, I'm aware. I'm just surprised."

"My sister is very sweet, once you get to know her. I think you two will like each other."

"I look forward to spending time with her then," Ella said. "Speaking of spending time with each other, I promised Davina a movie night on Saturday. Is that going to be a problem?"

Elijah shook his head, "Not for me."

"Good then." She took a sip and then checked her watch, anxiously.

"Oh, for goodness sake," Elijah reached for her coffee. "Allow me to hold this."

"Why?"

"I'm going to pick up the pace a bit," Elijah looked around. "Too many people out. We can take the back way."

"But that's too long. I'll never get there in time."

"Not for me."

He led her down an ally and gripped her firmly, zooming with her down the street to behind her school.

Eloise's mouth dropped, "What was that?"

"A benefit." He leaned to kiss her cheek, handing her back her coffee, "Have a good day, my dear. Don't be overly cranky with the little ones due to your lack of sleep. It is not their fault you were foolish enough to make a date on a Thursday night."

She was still getting her bearings but at his words, her face lit up into a smile, "You know me well if you know I require my sleep to be my usual sunny self."

"I'm learning at least. I'll see you tonight. Don't forget about Rebekah."

She nodded and then punched in the code for the school, the door opening.

Elijah watched her go in and then smiled himself.

Eloise pulled open the door, "Hi, I just need a second. Do you want to come in?"

"Sure," Rebekah nodded at her, "Oh my," she looked at her, taking in her appearance, the slump of her shoulders and bags under her eyes, "You look exhausted, Ella."

She sighed, "I'm afraid I'm not very nocturnal. And the kids were so unruly today. Fridays can be tough at times, just the exhaustion of the week culminating. But I managed a bit of a nap though, so I should be good to go." She frowned, "I don't look too awful, do I?"

"It's nothing that a bit of makeup won't fix," Rebekah said, looking around, "Nik did say your place was small, but God, this is miniscule."

"I know, it is that," Eloise laughed, "but I really don't need anything bigger at the time. It's cozy and it's home."

"It is a good location though," Rebekah smiled at her positivity. "Wouldn't you say?"

"yes, it is."

Rebekah's glanced at the papers on the table, "Is this your students' work?"

"Yes," Eloise grabbed a few supplies and threw them into a bag, "Their writings. Should I take heels?"

"Yes, I think we are different shoe sizes," Rebekah said, fingering the papers, "May I?"

"Of course," Eloise said, "Make yourself at home."

Rebekah picked one up and smiled as she read it. She looked only briefly as Eloise showed her two pair of shoes, advising her on which pair to take. "This is very sweet. I always wanted a family. A whole brood of little ones running around."

Eloise stopped from where she was grabbing a bottle of water and her sunglasses. She glanced at her, "I didn't realize that."

"It's not the same feeling for my brothers, but I always wished for the benefits of a human life." Rebekah put the paper back down, "I don't know why I am telling you this."

"Maybe because you needed to say it," Eloise said, her voice soft.

Rebekah nodded, "I think I might have. Being near Marcel makes me nostalgic."

"Marcel?" Eloise raised an eyebrow, putting her sunglasses on the top of her head.

"We had a thing...a rather big thing, once upon a time," Rebekah admitted, "But a long time ago."

Eloise nodded, "I think I'm ready."

Rebekah smiled, "Good! I can't wait to pick out the perfect dress for you. One that will bring Elijah to his knees."

Eloise laughed, "I doubt that is possible, Rebekah."

"Oh, no, it can be." Rebekah said, seriously. "He can be terribly romantic."

"Then, if so, I doubt then I am the one to bring that out in him."

Rebekah frowned, "Why on earth would you say such a thing?" she asked as Eloise locked up and they made their way outside.

"It's my typical experience." Eloise pushed her sunglasses down to cover her eyes.

"Well," Rebekah shoved her sunglasses on, "It will not be your experience tonight, Ella. I shall ensure it. Now, come along, my darling. We have work to do."

Eloise came down the steps as Elijah waited for her. She was wearing an emerald green mid length flapper style dress, adorned with beading and lace. Her hair curled and pinned up in the fashion of days past, a jeweled headpiece around her forehead. Rebekah had insisted on her wearing less subtle makeup and the result was her eyes were accented by long eyelashes and the makeup made the color of her eyes pop. She fingered her long string of pearls, nervously as she walked down the stars, using the stair rail to ensure she didn't fall.

Rebekah was standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking gorgeous in her black dress and red lipstick, like she was from a 1920s movie. Her hand was on Klaus's arm, but her eyes were on Elijah, watching his reaction.

Eloise blushed under the intensity of Elijah's gaze. "Will this do?" she asked as she reached the bottom.

Elijah cleared his throat, "You look..." he paused for several moments causing Rebekah to smile in triumph. Elijah was rarely at a loss for words.

"Beautiful, lovely, stunning, enchanting," Klaus offered, his voice light. "Any adjective, brother, would do to get us out the door in a timely manner." Klaus said, as Rebekah let go of him to elbow him hard in the side.

"Hush, Nik, darling," Rebekah whispered. "You are ruining the moment."

"I wasn't aware there was a moment," Klaus retorted.

"What do you suppose is happening right now?" Rebekah asked, exasperated. "Don't be so dense."

Elijah ignored him siblings, "You are lovely, Eloise. " He reached for her hand, kissing it, "Unassumingly so and utterly enchanting. Yes, I think it will do."

"Rebekah insisted on a grand entrance, it's kind of mortifying though," Eloise murmured into Elijah's ear as he pulled her closer so he could give her a kiss her on her flushed cheek.

"As she should have, don't be embarrassed," he murmured back in her ear, and offered his arm, "Come. We will be late." He looked at her again, smiling, almost unable to take his eyes from her. Eloise's blush deepened.

"Goodness, I'm glad I didn't put blush on her," Rebekah teased, turning her head back to give Eloise a look and Eloise laughed, appreciatively. Rebekah's words actually served to break the tension that was in her, which was multiplying under Elijah's scrutiny. She wasn't used to the attention from men. She wasn't used to be admired so much. Especially from a man like Elijah, who was so mature and self confident, as he should be...living one thousand years and being immortal and all.

Elijah glanced at her and she smiled at him, reassuring him that Rebekah's words were taken well. "She's right. I can never seem to control it."

"Perhaps, you must learn to become more comfortable within your own skin," Klaus turned around to look at her, "Or perhaps you just need to expand your experiences."

"Now, I am sure both are true," Eloise said, easily, "I am far more comfortable with little ones than with adults."

"Such a shame," Klaus said, "Wouldn't you agree, brother?"

Elijah cleared his throat as he opened the door for Eloise, "I would, but I do not believe there isn't a remedy for it." He closed the door after Eloise slid into the front passenger seat and Elijah climbed around to the front.

"And what's the remedy for it?" Eloise asked as she glanced back at Klaus and Rebekah who were in the back seat.

"As my brother said," Elijah started the car, "Experiences," he said, his voice low as he began to drive the back roads into the city at remarkably fast speeds, the sports car being made for fast driving. Eloise laughed, half nervous, half excited...her emotions swirling around her.

"Don't grip the handle, Ella!" Rebekah admonished, joining her laughter.

"I'm the only one of you all that can technically die!" Eloise exclaimed, half in jest, half seriously. "Let me grip the handle!"

"I doubt that will save you, little girl, if we do crash," Klaus said, "But do what you feel is necessary."

Elijah glanced over at Eloise making sure she was handling the ride alright, "I can slow down."

"Don't you dare for me," Eloise said, "Just one of you all save me if we crash. Just don't turn me...save me with enough time, okay?"

Rebekah and Klaus nearly exploded with laughter.

"Do not fear. I will feed you my blood if we crash," Klaus said, "But Elijah doesn't crash his cars."

"Don't you trust me?" Elijah admonished, lightly, turning his head to look at her.

"Just focus on what you are doing, Elijah."

"Rest assured I'm intensely focused, Eloise." His tone caused her stomach to flip flop even more.

"Elijah is always focused," Rebekah leaned forward, "Ella. Give me your hand. It's okay. You can let go."

Ella managed to pry her hand from the handle and put it in Rebekah's.

"Close your eyes."

Eloise closed her eyes.

"Now feel." Rebekah said, squeezing her hand. "It doesn't have to be scary. It can be fun."

Eloise allowed herself to feel the exhilaration of the ride, squashing down her feelings of panic and common sense. It was reckless and yet, it was Elijah. She knew she was safe with him driving.

"Oh my gosh!" Eloise squealed.

"Isn't it grand?" Rebekah squeezed her hand.

Elijah slowed down as they entered the city and Rebekah let go of her hand.

Elijah glanced at her, making sure she was okay, "We were late."

"Yes, but that's not why you drove so fast."

"True, it is not." Elijah said, pulling into a parking place.

"Oh, drat, Elijah, my hair is all out of place." Rebekah scolded as she was trying to make adjustments as Elijah helped Eloise out of the car, holding her steady until her legs stopped wobbling.

"Here, I'll fix it," Eloise said, going over to her and smoothing down the pieces, "It still looks great. We used enough hair spray for it to stay in place for weeks."

"True," Rebekah tucked in a piece of Ella's hair into her headpiece. "That was fun, wasn't it?"

She laughed, "Yes, it was actually. Crazy but fun."

"That's often the best kind of fun, Eloise, sweetheart," Klaus offered Rebekah her arm, "Come, sister." He winked at Eloise as he escorted Rebekah inside.

Ella leaned against the car, trying to catch her breath and still her thumping heart as Elijah looked at her amused.

"Tell me. Are you recovering from the ride or trying to gather your courage to go inside?" he asked, dryly, but his eyes twinkled.

"I think..." Ella paused, "both actually," she laughed. "Is that awful?"

"I don't think so," Elijah reached for her hand which was by her side and gripped it in his. "Are you truly this shy in crowds to have to take the time to gather your nerve?"

"Yes. Does that bother you?"

"Bother me? Why would bother me?" Elijah asked, incredulously.

"You have a type."

"So you have said. Tell me. Have you ascertained what my type is?"

"Charming. Witty. Vivacious"

"Vivacious?" Elijah tapped his chin, amused, "What have you been reading these days, Eloise?"

"Oh, you know what I mean," Ella said, ignoring his question, because truth be told she was devouring into alot of regency romance novels of late. "Outgoing. Fun. Daring. Strong."

"And you think that is my type?"

"Yes."

"And you are not it."

"Yes."

"Fascinating," Elijah drawled, but did not say anything more.

"Are you going to say something?"

"I think not yet," Elijah said, tugging her hand, "But I do not think I will allow you to stand out here all night. I do want a dance tonight. And you look like you could use a drink."

"Some coffee?"

"Now you are just being contrary," Elijah swatted at her, "Let's go."

"Ella," Father Kieran came up to her, "May I have a word?"

"I'm not so sure that is a good idea," Rebekah said, eyeing where Elijah was getting drinks for them and Klaus was off, probably terrorizing somebody.

Eloise forced a smile, "Tell Elijah I will be back in a minute. I have to find the bathroom anyways."

Rebekah nodded as she stepped back, allowing the priest to grab Ella by the arm.

"Where are we going?"

"Some place away from vampire ears," Kieran said, wryly. He led her to one of the alcoves in the compound, "What are you doing here?"

"Marcel invited me."

"You came with the Mikealsons." His displeasure was displayed through his annoyed tone.

Ella shifted and raised her hand to chew on her thumb. She rather felt like she was being scolded. "I did."

"I thought we talked about how dangerous they are."

"We did."

"And?" Kieran titled his head, his eyes alight. "What are you doing here?"

"I tried to stay away," Ella said, "And fate pushed him back into my life."

"Fate?"

"Fate or God or..." Ella shrugged, "I don't know."

"Not God."

"Whose to say?"

"They are murderers."

"So was Sean. And I know what a good person he was."

"That's low." Kieran frowned at her, "And unlike you."

Ella crossed her arms, "What's low is you not really telling me what happened to him! Was he compelled or was he cursed?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes! He was my best friend. It matters alot."

Kieran stiffened, "Cursed."

"Witches." Ella let out a long breath.

"You are relieved it's not vampires."

"No, that's not true," Ella retorted, her face flushing. "I just wish I knew. That I understood. Cami needs that too by the way."

"Yes, I know she does," Kieran let out a long breath, "I was trying to stop the Harvest. Witches always punish interference."

Ella closed her eyes, her heart aching.

"He would have not wanted this for you. To know the evil that lies in this city."

"I know."

"And?"

"Elijah saved my life last night. I had gone on a date, who unbeknownst to me was a vampire."

"He saved you from one of his own."

"Elijah isn't like that."

"Elijah is very much like that! He's the worst of that! For the love of all that is holy, I need you to listen. You are helpless. Powerless. Just like Sean was. I couldn't protect him. But I will protect you. And Camille."

"How did you do it?"

"Do what?"

"Protect yourself."

"I have my ways."

"Ways you are not willing to share."

He stared at her, assessing her. "Meet me after church on Sunday. 2 pm."

"Fine."

His look softened, "Eloise. I am sorry for my tone."

"It's fine," Ella's lip trembled. "If you don't think I am conflicted or confused then you don't know me as well as you imagine you do."

"I know." His gaze went past her as a throat cleared.

"Eloise," Elijah cleared his throat. Rebekah was right behind him. "Is there trouble here?"

"No, of course not, Father Kieran was just offering me some priestly shepherding," Eloise swallowed hard, "I'm looking for the restroom though." Tears flooded her vision not missed by anyone in the group.

"Rebekah can help you find it." He focused his vision on the priest when he saw Eloise fighting tears. And he looked like he was ready to tear him apart.

"Great." She forced a smile and reached out to put a hand on Elijah's arm. "I'm really fine Elijah."

"I know you are."

"I'm being overly sensitive and that isn't Kieran's fault."

"Okay." Elijah still stared at the priest.

"You don't have to defend my honor or anything."

"I'm aware."

Rebekah smiled at her, "Come, my darling, it's not far." She took her arm and led her around the corner to a bedroom. "In there."

"Thanks." Ella's lip trembled. "Oh God."

"If you cry, you will mess up your makeup," Rebekah cautioned. "And we just got here. Not to mention, Elijah won't like it. He is very protective of you already."

"Elijah won't like what?" Marcel entered the room. "What are you doing in here?"

"This used to be my room, didn't it?" Rebekah asked, her look pointed.

"I just needed the bathroom to...cry...or not cry..." Ella's lip wobbled as she laughed. "Don't mind me."

"Ella had an encounter with Father Kieran," Rebekah explained, "I do believe there was scolding involved."

Marcel looked at her, "Did you know that Father Kieran is the leader of the human faction in the city?"

"I didn't." Ella swallowed down the lump in her throat. "It makes sense though. I'm afraid he is quite disappointed in me these days."

"Worried for you more like it," Marcel said, "Can't say I blame him. Where is Elijah now?"

"We left him with Father Kieran."

Marcel frowned, "I'll go check on it. The last thing we need is Elijah and the Father exchanging words...or more." He went over and tipped up Ella's chin. "Don't cry. You look far too pretty tonight to cry, Ella."

"That's what I say," Rebekah smiled. "Doesn't she look marvelous?"

"Both of you," Marcel said, smoothly. "Camille is here. Klaus is commandeering her."

Ella's eyes widened, "Father Kieran will have a conniption."

"Yes, I'm going to do damage control all around. No worries. Save a dance for me. Both of you."

"We will," Rebekah said.

"No tears, Ella," Marcel warned. "Not at my party."

Ella forced a smile.

"That's better." He nodded "Ladies."

Ella went down to sit next to Rebekah on the bed, "Tell me I am not stupid."

"You are not stupid."

"Are you just being nice?"

Rebekah smirked, "Of course not. I like you, Ella. And I'm not surprised my brother does as well. And despite what the good Father has said, Elijah does have a gentle side to him. Goodness to him despite of the very nature he fights against. I know you see it."

She nodded, "I don't want to stay away from him."

"Then don't," Rebekah said. She stood and reached for Eloise's hand, pulling her off the bed, "But for God's sake, don't over think things. It scares men off. Even men as understanding as my brother."

"Noted."

"Now, come. I want that drink." Rebekah raised her finger, "And I think I saw a delicious looking witch downstairs that looks like he would be a good dancer...among other things."

"Rebekah!" Eloise laughed. She paused and then turned, "You meant like...normal things...not feeding things, right?"

Rebekah winked at her. "Come along, dearest. Elijah will have a fit if you don't reappear soon."

Eloise followed her out, "Was this really your home?"

"Yes. And between you and I, it is only a matter of time before Niklaus makes his move and returns us here. He needs his child born in some sort of home, after all." She fingered her pearls.

"Interesting," Eloise said, "How long has it been?"

"A century."

"That's a long time. Marcel won't want to give this place up."

"He won't have a choice if Nik sets his mind upon it."

Eloise and Rebekah found Elijah, who smiled at them.

"I think I will leave the two of you alone," Rebekah gave her brother a kiss. "Have fun, dears."

Elijah cleared his throat as Eloise shifted her weight, "Eloise, I..."

"Do you want to dance?" Eloise interrupted.

He looked into her eyes. "Yes."

"I'm not very good at it. Lack of practice and all of that."

"You are very good at lowering expectations when you are nervous, but I do not fear for my feet, I have a high pain threshold, of course," Elijah held out his hand for her and she put her hand in his, as he lead her to the middle of the floor. Ella put her hand on his shoulder as his arm came around her waist.

They were quiet for a few moments.

"I'm sorry I ran off," she murmured, looking into his eyes. "I just..."

He swirled her around, pulling her closer to him, her cheek against his. "You don't like disappointing people."

"No."

"Personality defect or some sort of personal history of it?"

She laughed, "The former, Mr. Mikaelson." She paused, "Oh, God, at least I hope!"

Elijah chuckled.

He pulled her away and twirled her and then swung her around, pulling her against him again, "Father Kieran isn't wrong. You could do much better. You should do much better."

She didn't know how to respond, but she knew how she felt...in the depths of her core. She was drawn to him.

"Elijah," Eloise breathed. "I..."

"Yes?"

"I tried."

"What did you try?" He spun with her again.

"Staying away. But just because I stayed away didn't mean.." she paused, her face flushing.

"Didn't mean what?" Elijah's face was against hers.

"Didn't mean I didn't think about you."

He paused, closing his eyes briefly, "I thought of you often as well."

"Did you?"

"Oh yes, indeed," he murmured, "And while I tried to stay away, I found that I cannot."

"Because?"

"Because there is something different about you..."

"You mean because you aren't used to such sexually inexperienced women."

He laughed at her blunt assessment, "No. It's not that. I know you are a virgin. And I have some experience in that regards."

"Do you?" Ella gave him a look.

"Well, not often...but on occasion..." Elijah clarified. "No. It has nothing to do with that. It's something I cannot put my finger upon, yet...but it is there. And it draws me to you."

"And what do we do now?"

Elijah pulled her away to twirl her around and then spun her again, "Now we dance."

"And then?"

"Do you always have to plan your life out?"

"Yes."

"And how has that worked out for you?"

"Well," Eloise leaned against him, "Considering my life...you know living in a small studio, being a hermit, a spinster..."

Elijah paused and then said, "Regency novels, that is what you have been reading."

She laughed, "Guilty."

"Romance?"

"Of course."

"Oh, Eloise," Elijah chided, a teasing sigh.

"I know, I know, but back to the point, considering all of that, the planning is not going all that well, I'd say."

"Then, perhaps it is time to try a new strategy, don't you think?"

She looked into his eyes, her stomach fluttering, "Maybe it is."

"I'm going crazy," Cami announced as soon as Ella opened the door.

"I doubt it," Eloise yawned.

"Did you just wake up?" Cami frowned. "It's eleven o'clock."

"I was up late." She stretched, "Want some coffee? It's ready. I was just going to pour a cup...or three."

"I had a late night too. At least I think I did. I'm not really sure"

"You don't remember?"

"No."

Eloise moved the blankets of the couch. "Sit. I'm going to get you some coffee."

Cami groaned as she put her head in her hands, "I'm losing it."

Eloise poured a mug of coffee for her and then for herself. "No." She handed her a cup of coffee and the plopped next to her on the couch, her hand wrapped around the warm drink. "Cami, did your uncle tell you to brew the tea?"

"What tea?"

Eloise frowned. "The one you are supposed to drink every day to make you feel better with the...you know."

"No," Cami's frown was deep, "Clearly, I don't, Ella."

"Okay," Eloise let out a long breath. "Um..." She bit her lip and took a long sip of coffee. "Who have you been hanging out with?"

"I went to a party last night. I met a guy named Marcel. I have met him before, but..."

Eloise scratched at her chin, anxiously, "Yeah, I was at that party."

"You were?!"

"Yes."

"Did we talk?"

"Of course. We are friends, aren't we?"

"Yes, but, then why don't I remember?"

"Well..." Eloise put her coffee cup down, "Two words. Niklaus Mikaelson."

"I don't know anybody of that name."

"Sure you do," Eloise said, standing. "Listen." She walked over to her cabinet, opened it and took out a flowered tea urn and a ziplock container. She started scooping leaves into it.

"What are you doing?"

"What your uncle told me what to do after I nearly got hurt one night- what Sean begged for him to share with me. Brew this into a tea. Take it every morning. And then come back and we can talk about what you figure out."

"Can you just tell me what is going on?" Cami frowned.

"Trust me," Ella handed her the container, "If I tried, you would think I was the one losing my mind. You would probably want to have me committed. It's easier this way. Just don't tell your Uncle, I was the one to give you this. He doesn't get that you are already involved. He left last night without seeing you. If he did...well, we can talk over all of this later. Oh, and perhaps, don't tell anybody I gave this to you...Niklaus won't like it and he isn't one to push."

"Ella," Cami looked at her, wearily.

"Trust me," Ella said, "It's better this way. It's high time you know what's going on. Brew it when you get home. Right away, okay?"

Cami nodded, "Okay."

"What is this?" Ella's mouth dropped at the sight of Father Kieran's secret room in his secret apartment.

"How I have protected myself and how we will protect all the humans of the city." Kieran said, ushering her in. "Dark objects. Some made by the witches. Acquired at one point by vampires."

"Vampires?"

"Well, according to lore, one in particular. A Mr. Kol Mikaelson. He was the architect of much of this."

"Mikaelson? Like Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah Mikaelson?"

"Exactly."

Eloise frowned, "What do they do?"

"All sorts of things. I have it catalogued here- with the name and functions. But it is our leverage and we have to have it, Eloise. We are human. We do not have any supernatural abilities. It's why it is best to keep the lines between us divided- as much as we can. And to keep the peace where we can."

"But sometimes we can't."

"No, unfortunately, sometimes we can't. So, if a war is coming, with these, we are prepared."

"Do you believe one is coming?" Eloise's frown deepened.

"I didn't think so, but with the Harvest and then the Mikaelsons coming and the baby, something is on the horizon."

"Then, perhaps aligning with the Mikaelsons is best."

Kieran shook his head, "They only protect their own."

"Surely that isn't true..."

"Klaus Mikaelson is known for his deranged behavior...he's paranoid, Ella. And Elijah has his hands full trying to control his brother, but he can't control him. No one can."

"But Niklaus seems..."

"You are calling him Niklaus." Kieran interrupted, aghast.

Eloise shrugged, "Only because he insists on calling me Eloise like his brother and I like it when Elijah does, but Klaus just does it to tease me."

"Ella" Kieran chided, "You are so far underwater you don't even know you are drowning. Elijah might gentle, but Klaus will have you for lunch. If you aren't convinced, ask those who know him the best. You better tread carefully. You are very principled when it comes to right and wrong and one day it is going to put you on the wrong side of Klaus Mikaelson. Mark my words. Not even will Elijah be able to save you then."

Eloise let out a long breath. "But as I told Elijah when we discussed this...and we have discussed this...I'm already entrenched in their world...and I was without even knowing it. Now, that I know the truth, I can..." Ella twisted her bracelet, "At the very least be more vigilant. And help where I can. And how can you deny me that- to try to do good where I can?"

"As long as you do not make a deal with the devil to do so."

"Like you did with Marcel?" Eloise challenged.

"And I paid the price for that alliance! With my nephew's life and the life of so many good men. And let me tell you, Marcel is tame compared to all the Mikaelsons."

"How can you say that? Look at what he has done to the witches with all the bloody executions."

"And I am telling you it is the truth. You have a crush, Ella and it is natural to be attracted to someone like Elijah, but..."

"And what if I tell you that I see something more in Elijah...than the evil that you think consumes his soul?"

"Then, I'd say you are a damn fool, Eloise."

"Then, I'm a damn fool," Eloise stepped out of the room, "I'll see you in confession for my temper and bad thoughts towards you, Father." She turned around.

"I'll be ready to absolve them...with proper penitence."

"Very good then," Eloise turned again to leave but Kieran's voice stopped her in her tracks.

"Tearing the human faction apart will be our downfall in his city...we have to be united Ella, because whether we like or not, you are very much involved now. You are a leader in this town. You are known. Be careful, my child."

Eloise turned back around, "I will. I'm sorry, Kieran. Truly, I am."

He nodded and Eloise turned to leave...this time without looking back.

Ella handed Elijah a glass of wine that he brought over, keeping her wine glass in her hand.

"You look so serious Eloise," he chided.

"I have a confession to make. I did something I think you might not like." She bit her lip nervously. "But I think you should probably know...in case...well, things get...interesting."

"Intriguing," He took a sip and then patted the spot next to him, "Is that why you called me over?"

"Well, that and I just wanted to see you," Ella sat next to him on the sofa, leaning forward and putting her glass on the coffee table. "Of course."

"Naturally, but..." Elijah titled his head, reading her easily, "You have concerns. Concerns that are causing you anxiety."

"Yes, I have been worrying about it. It's been a week and I haven't heard and the longer it goes, the more I worry, especially because my fight with Father Kieran is getting in my head. Not that I think I was wrong to do what I did. But it might complicate things because...it involves Niklaus."

"Niklaus." Elijah repeated.

"Yes."

"Then, I think we must discuss it so we can be prepared," Elijah said, his voice easy. "What did you do, Eloise?"

"Your brother has been compelling my friend to forget things about the city...and about him."

Elijah took another sip, "Camille. Yes. And?"

"I gave Cami vervain."

"I see."

"Do you disagree?"

"I make no judgment, I'm just astonished it took you so long to act." He reached out to squeeze her hand. "My brother will not be happy if he learns you have ruined his little game."

"He needs to stop playing games!"

Elijah snorted, "Unlikely. Niklaus lives for his intrigue and deceptions and plots. But I digress, will Camille tell it came from you?"

"She promised she wouldn't. I don't think she would mean to but in the heat of the moment, maybe, she could slip up especially if she is upset with Niklaus...justifiably so. She thought she was losing her mind like her brother!"

"And what are you afraid might happen if she does reveal to Niklaus that you lead her to the truth?" He picked up the glass of wine that Ella had put down for herself on the coffee table and handed it to her. "You are too wound up. Drink some wine."

She took a sip and then another one, "He is going to kill me."

"No he won't. Too messy with the witches and the werewolves and Marcel's vampires. Not to mention a brother who would be quite upset with him if he did."

"Has that stopped him before?"

"No," Elijah said, honestly, "But the transgression is less. He may resort to mind games with you, but he won't truly harm you."

Ella let out a long breath, "But was I wrong to?"

"As I just said, I'm not giving my opinion and furthermore, you do not require it to justify your actions. You believe you are right and we can leave it out that. Honestly you have more to worry about Father Kieran and the fact you led his niece, who he was trying to shield, to the truth."

Eloise took another long sip of wine, "Probably. So I'll be okay?"

Elijah nodded.

"Are we still on for dinner tomorrow night?"

"Of course," Elijah looked amused, "This doesn't count as a date...though," he paused, "what do you usually do on a Friday night?"

"Collapse into a heap of exhaustion," Ella said, with a wry smile at him. "Usually over a movie."

"Sounds fun" Elijah nodded, "Go on and pick one."

"Seriously?"

"Do you think I jest?"

"No, I just..." Ella smiled, "Don't you usually like to go out?"

"Not really. And we are going out tomorrow. Pick a movie."

"Oh God the pressure!" Eloise exclaimed. "I will give you choices, how's that?"

"Exceedingly fair of you," Elijah said, dryly.

Ella went over to the cabinet, opening it up and ruffling through some dvds, pulling a few out.

"Niklaus reclaimed the compound from Marcel," Elijah said as Eloise tossed some choices on his lap.

"No way! Why didn't you say?"

"Because you were so preoccupied fearing for your life that it seemed trivial to mention, but now that moment has hopefully passed, I felt compelled to share."

She laughed and slid onto the sofa next to Elijah. "How did Marcel take it?"

"Well, he and Rebekah had planned a coup. Didn't work out too well for them both. Hayley is settling in nicely though. Klaus is fixing up the nursery."

"Is Rebekah okay?"

"She'll be fine."

"Is she daggered?"

"No, he didn't dagger her."

"Will he?"

"If he hasn't already, I doubt it" Elijah shifted through the dvds. "Midnight in Paris."

"Good choice," Ella smiled at him as he handed it to her and she popped it in the dvd player. "Quirky but delightful."

"Like someone else we know," Elijah said as he opened his arm, "Come and rest your head. You do look weary. Do not tell me you have lost sleep over this whole Niklaus and Camille ordeal."

"Maybe a little," Eloise admitted as she took the remote and flicked play. She nestled down trying to get comfortable.

"Relax, Eloise," he chided, "Your heart is thumping. It's distracting."

"Oh, good Lord."

"I won't bite you."

"Oh, doubly good Lord."

Elijah laughed with her and then pulled her hand up to kiss it before twining his hand through hers and resting both of them on his knee, "Now hush. I want to watch."

Eloise felt herself relax and her heart normalized. She was still aware of the closeness, but she also was aware that Elijah was more attune to her physiological reactions given his heightened senses, so there was no hiding her nervousness from him. And yet, his bluntness about it, it actually to make her feel less awkward about it. Because she couldn't hide her awkwardness from him, so she needed to embrace herself and where she was at.

"This movie is completely you," Elijah murmured.

"I know. Is it awful?"

"No, I like it."

"Good," Eloise yawned.

"Should we finish it later?"

"Don't you dare move," Eloise murmured, sleepily.

"I wasn't planning on it."

"Good."

Eloise jerked awake when the credits were playing. "I missed half the movie."

"Ah, yes you did."

"Did you like it?"

"It was charming, if not a bit contrived."

"Do you think?"

"Maybe a tad bit."

Eloise eased out of Elijah's arms and stretched.

"Are you stiff?"

"A bit," Eloise admitted. "Not your fault, of course, I woke up that way. I think the couch is getting lumpy in places."

Elijah frowned, "I have a proposition."

"Oh dear," Eloise titled her head side to side to stretch her neck, "What is it?"

"Now we are moved into the compound, perhaps, you would consider, allowing me to take your piano to store in our music room?" Elijah's eyes on her, "You can visit as often as you like and play it or not...considering you can't, but I could play if some for you...or even teach you."

"Teach me?"

"If you'd like."

"I would but..." Eloise paused.

"You need a bed. You shouldn't have to sacrifice one for the other. In addition, to the fact, you are horribly grumpy without the proper amount of sleep." Elijah's eyes searched hers. "Rebekah and Niklaus both agree."

"With the fact I'm a grump?" Eloise asked.

"No," he poked at her, "With the fact, it is a crying shame for a woman like you to live like this. And considering, I doubt you would consider moving in with us, even if we do have the room, this is the next best thing."

"But what if Klaus finds out what I did to Cami and smashes it?"

"Definitely not his style, Eloise." Elijah said, patiently. "What do you think?"

Eloise nodded, "That's very generous of you."

"I didn't think you would agree to it so soon."

"Having regrets?"

"No, the offer was sincerely given and it's no trouble, it's just you are so attached to it..."

"I can be practical, Elijah. And I miss having a bed." Eloise said, "Truth is, I know it will be safe there."

He smiled, "Music room is very tucked away. Did I mention that?"

"Hum," Eloise smiled. "So, Niklaus doesn't have to hear as I butcher piano lessons?"

He laughed, "Yes, exactly that." He reached for her hand, squeezing it. "I should go."

Eloise smiled at him, "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Lock the door behind me."

"Of course."

"Goodnight, Eloise."

"Goodnight, Elijah."

Eloise turned the lock, knowing he was waiting at the door to ensure she did. She turned and smiled. And suddenly, she wasn't sleepy any longer.

"What movie did you watch?" Davina asked.

"Midnight in Paris."

She smiled, "I can't imagine Elijah watching movies."

"I know, for being one of the most feared supernatural creatures on this planet, he does have a sweet, normal side to him."

"I was thinking something," Davina shifted her leg underneath her. "There is a spell I can do that would allow your bracelet to protect you from compulsion."

"No vervain each morning?"

"Yes. And I can spell it so only you can take it off. I think you would be even more protected than just the vervain, because somebody could always...well," Davina looked uncomfortable.

"What?"

"Marcel says that Klaus has the vervain drained from people so he can compel them again."

Eloise pursed her lips, "Let's do it then."

"I mean, he would never do that to you I'm sure."

"No, but, I think it is a good precaution." Eloise twisted her bracelet, absently, "Thank you, Davina."

"Of course," Davina reached out her hand and placed it over her bracelet.

Two weeks later

Eloise froze, stopping in her tracks on the path up to Olivia's house. Olivia had been out of school for three days and her mom wasn't answering her phone or email. Finally Eloise decided to just go check on her- their small house was close enough and she had been there once before.

And the moment she stepped on her walk way, her bracelet singed her skin, the burning heat overwhelming her. She twisted it, trying to get relief. But when none came she pulled it off, popping it back into her bag. She pulled out her cell phone, backing away and walking back down the street.

"Eloise."

"My bracelet is burning into my skin." Eloise took a breath. "I had to take it off."

"What? Where are you?" Elijah's voice was sharp.

"Outside of Olivia's house. She has been missing from school."

"Do not go in there," he commanded, "Niklaus and I are on our way."

"But.."

"Eloise, you will stay put."

"I can't be compelled over the phone."

She heard a shuffling and Elijah's voice calling, "Make her stay, Niklaus."

"Eloise, do not go in that house." Klaus's voice was loud. "You will keep your distance. We need five...no, three minutes."

"Niklaus, if Olivia needs me, I have to go in there."

"What the bloody hell do you think you can do?"

"I don't know. But I have to try something."

"No, you don't. Three minutes, Eloise. Walk in the opposite direction. Do it now. Damn it."

Eloise shifted on her heels as the call dropped.

She looked at the house, plagued with indecision. She looked at the red imprint of the bracelet on her skin.

And she knew.

She had to move, especially if Olivia was in trouble. And three minutes may be the difference between life and death.

She took a step towards the house, and then another...and then another.

Elijah would have to understand...she could distract whatever was happening for three minutes. She knew she could.

She reached towards the doorknob and said a prayer, before moving her hand to twist it open and face...whatever was to come.
