Conner Kent was not having a good day.
First things first were that he was a on different planet than he called his own for the first time, which he was sure to freak anyone out just a little. And given that was not the last of things that made today not particularly great, he supposed he was allowed a minute or two to bemoan the fact that things are not going they way things were supposed to go.
Things had started fine, when they had arrived with Strange on the Zeta platform to be met by Sardath and Alanna. And things had immedailty gone south from there, as M'gann went ahead and used her powers without the permission of Alanna and Sardath to create a psychic link that allowed them to communicate freely. Alanna and Sardath had reacted with wonder and amazement at the use of the power, but the fact M'gann just…. decided to use her powers without regard for how other might feel was once again rubbing Conner the wrong way.
Sardath seemed trustworthy, if he was a little clinical and cold and despite his insistence on calling them all Earthlings, when in fact Beast Boy was the only true Earthling among them. Alanna seemed like her father, if a little more brash and appeared to have a very obvious crush on Adam Strange.
Sardath had then explained he had built a device to enclose Earth in own's Zeta system, not allowing for inter-planetary travel unless given special access, which hopefully would keep incoming Kroleatan's out and trap any remainders after their teammate's mission in. But that wasn't the only thing that Sardath explained.
He also relayed to them that the Justice League were on a planetary watch alert due to the six Leaguers with the missing sixteen hours being accused of some kind of disturbance on Rimbor. He gave no more details, apparently not knowing more than that, and the trio from Earth had been forced to give a little fib that they are not associated with the League. It technically wasn't a lie, as M'gann had said they were not members of the League, which was true, but was deceptive in nature still.
The conversation had also been fairly productive to their mission, as Sardath had managed to locate the location of the base of operations for the Kroleatan's on Rann, which meant they were able to hit it and prevent them from returning to Earth. Strange, Alanna, Miss Martian, Beast Boy, and Superboy had decided to go through the jungle to get there, with Alanna acting as a travel guide.
But of course, everything started going downhill from there.
The Rannian Science Patrol had decided to do a routine ID check the moment they boarded the train that would lead them out into the jungle. Because nothing could ever go smoothly for them, could it? Strange had managed to ward them off and get them to follow him off the train by reciting poetry from Lewis Carroll, which to them had sounded like gibberish Superboy assumed since it was in another language. A Germanic language at that, which was notoriously hard to learn, and also from another planet.
Regardless, it had worked, and at first it had seemed that maybe things would be okay despite this wrinkle in their plan. They had managed to make it to the Kroleatan base undetected, setting the charges and being ready to hightail it out of there when everything went to hell in a handbasket fairly quickly.
Their escape route had been blocked by a Zeta transmission coming through before the explosion, sending more Kroloteans that were escaping from the simultaneous attacks on the Krolotean bases on Earth, and for a moment Superboy's thoughts had floated to Mariposa, wondering what she had encountered at her own base. Had it been large like theirs? Small? Had she captured a Krolotean herself?
Superboy's thoughts had been quickly interrupted by their forming of a new plan, to escape with the chaos of the explosions that would soon follow, but that had gone off the rails too by Beast Boy being too close to a charge and being knocked to the side. He had been alright, thank God, but it had put a wrench in their plans as it slowed them down long enough to be spotted. They had managed to get out, and things had started to look up when M'gann had shown restraint and told Beast Boy that she couldn't read the minds of the Krolateans because she couldn't understand their language when Superboy knew for a fact she could do it but wasn't going to do it.
And after that brief moment of hope for his ex, things had continued their downhill slope in spectacular fashion. With his advanced hearing, Superboy had been able to detect the Krolotean's were coming after them with some kind of weapon, and they had run, only to be caught by Krolotean's in some kind of war machine, one that walked and shot lasers in their direction with surprising accuracy.
Him and Alanna, and Beast Boy and Miss Martian had been separated in the attack, with him and Alanna being pushed off a cliff and sent spiraling to the ground below. They had managed to take refuge in a small alcove hidden by some kind of foliage, and the machine had managed to evade them, and their hiding place was secure, at least for now.
But it was still completely and utterly not how the mission was supposed to be going.
Superboy sighed and stood in the cave, peeking over the side and looking between the foliage to see the Krolotean's robot pass by their hiding spot, none the wiser to where they were.
"Superboy, Alanna, are you….."Miss Martian asked in the mindlink, and Superboy nodded though Miss Martian couldn't see.
"Safe, for now," Superboy said. "You?"
There was a soft, slow pause, and then Miss Martian answered. "We lost them."
Beast Boy huffed. "Now can we blow this popsicle stand?"
"Now we stay put!" Miss Martian insisted. "Give their patrols a chance to move on. We'll meet up at the mag-rail when it's safe."
"Then we regroup with Adam and my father to discuss what to do about this Krolotean base," Alanna said. Superboy shut his eyes and sighed internally, unable to help what came out of his mouth next.
"M'gann….be careful," Superboy cautioned gently, and M'gann returned it with a soft psychic touch. Superboy recoiled from it mentally, the deepness of it reminding him too much of …..that time. M'gann reacted in kind, pulling back the mental touch but answered him all the same.
"You too Conner."
Superboy stepped back, letting the foliage overtake his complete appearance as he turned into the darkness of the cave. He was vaguely aware of Alanna behind him, and then she spoke from where she sat seated on the ground, her legs crossed.
"So…how long were you two together?" Alanna asked, and Superboy started. He turned to her suddenly, eyes wide, and he looked down to see her staring up at him. She had no malice or mockery in her face, just a simple kind of curiosity, the kind that was almost child-like in nature.
Superboy sighed and turned to face to her. "All my life."
Alanna tilted her head to the side inquiringly. "Do you wanna talk about it?"
Superboy pursed his lips and turned from her sharply. "No."
The wounds were still too fresh, even if they were six months away from being cut into him. To talk of them so openly, so surely with a complete stranger felt….wrong. It didn't help that a part of him still longed to be with M'gann, no matter how much he hurt him. He still remembered all the good times with her, the times before she hurt him. The way she smiled at him like he was the only person in the world. The way she would surprise him with hugs when he wasn't looking. The way she had held him close and made him feel loved. It was hard to forget all that, no matter how much she hurt him.
"Oh, can she hear us?" Alanna whispered, covering her mouth. Superboy shook his head and went to sit beside her, the floor of the cave cold beneath him.
"Doesn't work that way," Superboy explained. He ran a hand through his hair. "Translation's basically automatic. She isn't conscious of what we say out loud."
Alanna smiled slyly and leaned closer to Superboy. "Well, then talk. I live lightyears away so you'll never see me again. Makes me the perfect confidant."
"Ah…." Superboy bit his lip. "It's weird. And complicated."
Alanna scoffed and rested her hands on her knees. "Hey, who am I to judge? I have a crush on an alien from another planet."
Superboy considered it for a moment. It would be nice to talk to someone, anyone about this. Betty already knew, but she was a million lightyears away. And how many times could he tell Betty before she got tired of it? He loved Betty, really, but he always hated bothering her with his own problems.
"You asked for it," Superboy eventually decided. "See, I'm a clone. Force-grown in a couple months to look like….this. M'gann was one of the people to show me that I could be more than the weapon I was designed to be."
"Complicated….but sweet," Alanna said. She smiled and motioned for him to continue, and Superboy leaned his head against the cave wall, the coolness of the wall comforting to his skin.
"M'gann's a shape-shifter. For her, appearance is just clothing for the mind. Easy to change, but I'm the opposite," Superboy continued. "It's become apparent the process used to create me had a side effect. I don't visibly age at all. I'm not immoral. I'm aging internally, but I'll always look …."
He trailed off, and Alanna smiled cheekily to him, motioning to his appearance. "This good?"
Superboy lightly blushed, just soft enough to be felt but not loud enough to be seen.
"Standard blessing and curse," Superboy lightly attempted to joke. Alanna pursed her lips curiously, and scooted closer to him.
"Seems like a shape-shifter would be a perfect match for someone suffering from…..your condition."
Superboy shut his eyes and sighed, beleaguered. "I used to think so."
He had once hoped that they were a perfect pair. It had felt that way for so long, it had felt an inevitability that they would be together forever. But he had been wrong, they weren't perfect. M'gann had….perverted what they had, to keep away his anger at her. Messed with his mind and tried to alter it, just like they had done at Cadmus. Tried to take away his ability to feel, turn him into a mindless drone.
"Anyway, she's with La'gann now," Superboy said after a moment. "He's kind of a jerk, but he's good to her."
Alanna frowned. "Well, it's obvious she still has feelings for you. Perhaps she regrets leaving you for him?"
Superboy turned to her. "Oh, no, I left her." He grimaced and turned away from Alanna. "She left me no choice."
Alanna and Superboy were quiet for a long moment, as Alanna digested what Superboy had told her. It was a lot to process, Superboy was sure, and she didn't even know half of what went down between him and M'gann. Alanna did not know the full story, and Superboy was sure to keep it that way. They had a mission to complete, and it would do no good for Alanna to know. Lest she start to distrust M'gann, should they know what M'gann did to Conner.
"And the others?"
Superboy blinked. "What?"
"You said M'gann was one of the people that showed you were more than a weapon," Alanna explained herself. She curiously nodded her head as a motion for him to answer, and Superboy thought for a long moment.
"My, uh, friends," Superboy said. "They found me, rescued me, allowed me to become something more. Especially Betty, my best friend. She…. she helped me grow. Become something …. better and stronger than what I was meant to be."
Alanna shifted in her position, pulling herself to sit up straighter, and she patted her fingers along her knee slowly, as if thinking intently, before she spoke again.
"Betty sounds like a really good friend," Alanna said slowly.
"She is." Conner smiled to himself, Betty's pretty smile flashing in his mind's eye. Superboy felt he had made a good choice in a best friend, as through the years Betty had been there for him just as much as he had for her. It wasn't a one-sided friendship, were one person was putting in all the work. No, it was fair, even, a real attempt to find friendship and family in the other.
Conner's nose twisted. Something didn't feel right, sorting Betty into family. Conner wasn't sure what had changed, to make that feel so twistedly incorrect. But Betty was certainly not just his family, that was sure, at least from the way his stomach twirled in unsure measures at the mere thought of sorting her into that category. The undercurrent of change in their relationship reared it's ugly head with a beat of his heart, and Conner clammed up inside, trying to make that nasty feeling disappear with another beat of his heart.
Just like before, he wanted to run far from that feeling of change and jump into it all the same. It felt wrong but right at the same time, like the taste of some delicious forbidden thing you're not supposed to have. And Betty was…Betty. His closest friend and confidant. It wasn't possible for him to think of her in any other light than as a friend or family.
(Was it?)
Conner shook his head and turned back to Alanna.
"She's a great friend," Superboy returned. "Betty's been there for me through a lot. I don't know who I'd be without her."
Alanna stared at him quietly for a moment, appraising him with inquisitive, before giving him a knowing smile, though what she knew now was a mystery to him.
"Perhaps I should find myself a Betty."
PALO ALTO
JANUARY 5TH 12: 37 PST
Artemis reclined on her couch, staring at her newly painted nails. They were a soft baby pink, not a normal nail polish for the young college student, but she found it to be an appealing color all the same. She looked up from her nails to see Betty sprawled across the floor of Artemis and Wally's carpeted floor, her arm covering her eyes as she laid on the soft green carpet.
"I just can't believe it, Arty!" Betty bemoaned, and Artemis rolled her eyes.
"You've said that at least fifteen times, Betty," Artemis chided. Betty pulled away her arm and lolled her head to look at Artemis, a thick frown painting her features and a fiery annoyance alit in her brown eyes. Artemis scoffed at Betty's expression and placed her drying fingernails downward.
"You have your identity taken without permission and see how you like it!" Betty huffed. Artemis shrugged and put her feet up onto the coffee table, her socks nearly translucent from wear and tear. Wally would be annoyed she was doing so, but a part of her still got a rise out of messing with her boyfriend, so she didn't mind so much if it bothered him.
"You're overreacting," Artemis said. Betty huffed and sat up, crossing her arms. The back of her hair was flat from her laid down position, and Artemis watched as Betty tried to fluff it back out with an aggravated grimace. "I'm sure whoever is doing this means it more as a tribute than anything else."
Betty sighed and stood, beginning to pace the expanse of Artemis and Wally's living room, and Artemis just let her be for a moment. She had known Betty long enough to know that sometimes it was best to just let the dark-haired girl feel and emote, as she felt things so strongly that it was hard to get her to reign herself in. Artemis too had a similar problem, so she had firsthand-knowledge of when it was best to let someone be and when it was time to step in.
And as she watched Betty pace and grumble to herself, Artemis figured it was best to just let Betty be. It's not like she was hurting anyone or anything with her annoyance and anger.
"I mean, who do they think they are?" Betty steamed to the air. "Taking Honeybee? Without so much of a 'hey man, I'm taking your identity, cool?'!"
"How were they supposed to reach you, Betty?" Artemis asked. "Not like we advertise our phone numbers."
Betty frowned and crossed her arms, annoyed but seemingly at a loss for words thanks to what Artemis said. Artemis could understand why Betty was upset – Honeybee had been such a big part of Betty's life for so long, and Honeybee was one of the building blocks that had built Betty into the young woman she was. But at the same time, Honeybee was a symbol for so many people. An idol, a person to look to for safety. With Honeybee seemingly gone and replaced by Mariposa (who many people didn't realize was the same person), it only made sense someone – a very brave someone, Artemis conceded– might try to take up the mantle.
And it's not like this new Honeybee wasn't doing a half bad job at it. They had been appearing for just over a few days and had managed to hold their own pretty well. Not managed to get themselves killed or hurt too badly and had actually managed to keep Gotham under control while the Batfamily and Beehive was preoccupied with other matters like the seeming apparent alien invasion.
"It's more the point of the thing, Artemis," Betty settled on, and she flopped into the seat next to Artemis. Artemis laughed lightly and bumped Betty in the shoulder with her own.
"I get it, Betty, really, I do," Artemis said. "But fretting about is not going to accomplish anything."
Betty grunted and leaned her head back onto the couch, staring up at the ceiling. Silence overtook them as Betty continued to stew and Artemis looked down at her nails, checking for any smudges that might have appeared in the interim since she painted them. She found them to still be fine when Betty spoke, this time her voice much calmer.
"When do you and Wally's semester start again?" Betty questioned, turning to face Artemis.
"Next Tuesday," Artemis said. She blew on her nails and Betty hummed thoughtfully, kicking off her shoes and then tucking her socked feet underneath her comfortably.
"Me and Conner start the day after," Betty explained. Artemis noticed that Betty left out M'gann, and the blonde raised an inquisitive eyebrow.
"Does M'gann not start that day too?" Artemis pushed. Betty's eyes darkened a fraction of a shade, and Artemis knew that she had struck a nerve. Artemis had been striking a nerve ever since the breakup between Conner and M'gann, every time she brought up M'gann, both Conner and Betty would clam up and become annoyed if not angry. Artemis's stomach turned wickedly, and she could feel the anger radiating off of Betty at the mention of the Martian.
Artemis didn't know exactly what went down between M'gann and Conner, but it must have been something terrible for the previously seemingly perfect couple to break up. Something unforgivable, but without knowing what it was Artemis was loathe to place blame on either one of them. Betty, it seemed, was not of a similar mind to Artemis, as she was almost seemingly irrationally angry at M'gann for something, which lead Artemis to suspect that M'gann was the cause of the break-up. And whatever had happened, Betty knew what it was and just wasn't in the mood to share what it was.
Which was infuriating, to say the least, as M'gann and Betty used to be thick as thieves, being the two people closest to Conner. And now the two could barely stand to look at each other anymore, and it drove Artemis up the wall that she just couldn't make the two get along. If only she knew what had happened, then maybe Artemis could help smooth things over. She hated to see her friends fighting. Her friends were like her family, and she just didn't know what to do anymore. How to fix this. Artemis already had one broken family; she wasn't sure if she could survive having another.
"Yeah, yeah, I guess she does," Betty mumbled, and turned away from Artemis. Artemis sighed and put a hand on Betty's shoulder.
"If you would just tell me what's going on –" Artemis started, and Betty cut her off with a look.
"What happened isn't my story to share, Artemis," Betty said. "But …." Betty bit her lip and rubbed her arm with her opposite hand. "Don't worry about me and M'gann. My issues with her shouldn't ruin your friendship with M'gann."
Artemis frowned but did not push for anything further. The blonde had been down this road before in the past few months, and there was nothing that could get Betty to budge. That didn't stop Artemis from trying however, as she knew one day eventually Betty would crack and tell her. Hopefully. Maybe.
Artemis shook her head and decided to change the subject.
"How's the newbies on the Team doing?" Artemis questioned. Betty brightened at the mention of the Team, and she smiled warmly at the slightly taller woman.
"Wonder Girl is doing fabulous," Betty beamed. "She's a real powerhouse and just so excited to be here. It's infectious, I tell you." Artemis had left the Team only a few short months ago, when her and Wally decided to devote themselves to college full time instead of dividing their time between civilian life and hero duties. Wonder Girl joined a few weeks later, meaning she never got the chance to fight alongside her, but from how much Betty gushed about the girl, Artemis felt like she already knew her.
"Glad to hear," Artemis said. Artemis checked her nails again, and found they were mostly dry. She reached for the TV remote and turned it on, the soft noise of the news playing in an undercurrent beneath their conversation. "What about…. what's his name? Blue Beetle?"
Blue Beetle was the newest member of the Team, if Artemis remembered correctly. The successor to the late Ted Kord's Blue Beetle persona. Artemis saw Betty's fire dampen just a little, but it was only barley noticeable.
"Beetle is having trouble fitting in," Betty admitted. "Nothing major…. just…. he talks to people that aren't there sometimes? And he's holding back, we can all tell, like he's scared what'll happen if he lets go." Betty shook her head and smiled mischievously at Artemis, looking up at her with sly eyes. "What's with the interest? You thinking of coming back?"
Artemis laughed but felt a clench in her chest. Even if she didn't regret her choice to leave the hero life behind, a piece of her missed it terribly. Missed the rush of adrenaline that came with the mask, missed the camaraderie that came with being apart of being something bigger than yourself. Artemis might not seriously consider going back save an emergency, but a half-hearted daydream she could live with.
"Just taking in interest in your life, B," Artemis said. "That's what friends do."
Betty shrugged and giggled quietly once.
"Worth a shot, A."
RANN
JANUARY 5TH 05:57 UTC
Superboy jumped across the rocky and muddy ground, landing on the metal automation that the Krolotean's were using to take M'gann and Garfield back to their home base. Him and Alanna had managed to narrow it down to this one or the one that Alanna managed to get off track, and Superboy hoped it was this one, as it would be easier to find them now, when they were in a clearer part of the jungle rather than deeper in, where they would have to navigate the dangers of that while avoiding the Kroloteans.
The metal bended with a large clank as they landed on the automation and reached for the glass casing that housed the Krolotean piloting the machine. He pulled it off and glared at the alien, who screamed at him in an alien language. Superboy growled as he pulled the alien up by the strap around their chest and threw the alien to the side, where they landed on the muddy terrain with a thick and loud squelching sound.
Superboy took two steps forward on the robot machine's top, and pulled open a small pod, and there appeared the forms of M'gann and Garfield. Superboy's heart skipped a beat of it's own accord, and he reached for M'gann, moving to carry her back to the ground. He held her in his arms, resolving to come back for Garfield, and jumped back to the ground.
"Conner…." M'gann mumbled, responsive but still not completely conscious. Conner looked at her with sympathy and kneeled down on the ground, and Alanna hurried to meet him, having raced off her own Krolotean and automation. Garfield appeared at Superboy's side, apparently having come to consciousness on his own. Superboy transferred M'gann to Alanna's lap, and Alanna held the young girl in her arms protectively, despite the little time they had known each other.
For a brief second their was a moment of calm, and then all hell broke loose again. The Krolotean mothership appeared above them, rising in the starlight of the Rannian sky. It began to shoot on them with golden lasers pointed directly on top of them, and Superboy grimaced. He stood and raced over to the automation that stood abandoned, pulling it closer to the four of them and using it as cover while a plan formulated in his head.
"Are they still trying to capture us," Beast Boy cried, "or is it just a bitter revenge thing now?!"
"Either way, we discourage them!" Superboy ordered. He raised an eyebrow at Beast Boy. "Game?"
"Me?" Beast Boy laughed and pointed to himself. "I'm big game."
Superboy turned to where Alanna sat with M'gann, and Superboy's breath hitched. M'gann and Beast Boy had been captured, which they had been alerted to when the translation link went down without warning. Garfield had recovered, but it seemed whatever they had done to M'gann was sticking for a bit longer.
"Take care of her," Superboy said, even though he knew that Alanna couldn't understand him. This was reinforced when Alanna spoke to him in Rannian, saying something he didn't understand himself and reaching after him. Still, he said it anyway. No matter what happened between him and M'gann, he still didn't want her to get hurt.
Superboy took Garfield's hand, and they shared a brief nod, a wordless plan formed between them. Superboy jumped, still gripping tight to Garfield, and landed on the other side of the automation. Superboy swung Beast Boy around, sending him flying up towards the mothership, making sure to aim between the lasers. Beast Boy roared as he transformed into a gorilla, and crashed into the side of the mothership, entering through the hole he created.
Superboy jumped up to the ship and tagged himself onto one of the laser's cannons. He thrust one his hand into the metal of the ship as a pocket to hold onto it, and reached for the other one, yanking off the cannon. He threw it onto the ground below, and then he pulled the other one off, hanging off by the small pocket of metal he created.
He threw the broken piece of cannon at the next one a few feet away, making sure that it hit it with a loud crash and a small explosion. He jumped up and through the hole Garfield created, landing on the inside of the ship with a small crouch.
He gave a cursory look of the ship, and found that it was the same as the base they had encountered, making the base and the ship one in the same. It was a green painted space, with small zeta platforms set up throughout the expanse, small bobbles of shelter and golden light popped up as weapon housing areas. Superboy narrowed his eyes as he saw the Kroloteans catch onto his presence, and he frowned and crouched down to prepare to jump again.
"Mariposa, maneu—"
Superboy cut himself off, surprised at himself, so surprised that a laser knocked him head on and sent him flying back a few feet. He shook his head and stood up, raising his fists. What was wrong with him? He knew Mariposa wasn't here, that Betty wasn't here.
Man, he wished she was here though. Mariposa would be beyond useful in this situation. Mariposa could think on her feet, but it had been months since they had last been on different squads. Maybe it was simply a slip of the tongue.
Superboy shook his head and thrust himself forward, forgetting Mariposa for the moment as he rushed to rescue themselves from this precarious situation.
Beast Boy reached and took one of the automations that was sitting motionless and alone, and threw it at the Kroloteans, who ran and fled in terror at the machine before it smacked them against a lime green metal wall. Superboy smiled and looked up at Beast Boy's gorilla form.
"Kid, you just might change my mind about monkeys yet!"
Beast Boy growled in determination and set himself forward, chasing after a group of Kroloteans. Superboy looked at the golden light structures, and he noticed the way that the Kroloteans tried to huddle around it, like they were trying to protect it. His eyes widened and he turned to Beast Boy.
"Beast Boy, the structures!"
Beast Boy nodded in his gorilla form and jumped up to destroy one. Superboy set to work destroying them as well, reaching for an automation and swinging it into the light structure to make it explode. It went off with a small explosion and Superboy jumped to avoid the debris from it. He and Beast Boyr found themselves next to the holes they created, and Superboy saw they were rising higher than they were before. It was now or never if they wanted to escape.
"Time to go!" Superboy said. Superboy jumped and landed onto the ground, the hard ground shaking beneath him as he landed. Garfield changed into a Rannian bird so he could fly to the ground and land gently, and he quickly switched into his human form.
Superboy looked up to see the Krolotean ship floating away, and he supposed they had got what they wanted after all. Kroloteans were no longer on Earth or Rann, which would allow both of them to be freer planets. He sighed and turned back to where Beast Boy was rushing back to where Miss Martian was, Alanna staring at Miss Martian in shock and astonishment.
That told him everything that he wanted to know. No, he needed to know.
He looked to where two Kroloteans were pulling away their third catatonic friend, his mouth foaming out and his eyes wide but unseeing. Rage filled Superboy and his ears colored red with rage, and he turned to M'gann in a fury.
"M'gann, what did you –"
"Neve rmind that now." M'gann, as always, seemed unbothered by what she had done psychically done to the Krolotean that was disappearing into the Rannian jungle. Superboy sniffed in anger, and M'gann still refused to pay it any attention. Their was just no winning with her, nothing was ever going to change, was it?
She continued, serious and stern.
"I know what the Justice League did on Rimbor. I know about the missing sixteen hours."

How we feeling about the new season folks?
I apologize for my tardiness. I was in a play, working, and doing full-time school, so this chapter comes late. I'm sorry.
