Chapter 18: Misplaced

Gotham City

November 5, 19:47 EDT

Emma's POV

I was visiting Selina in her grand apartment after telling and receiving permission from Bruce.

Selina's assistant, Maven, poured me some tea in my cup to drink as Isis started purring while rubbing against my legs.

I took a sip of my milk tea cup before placing it in the table.

It was a classic black tea variant with creamy milk added to an aromatic cup of tea.

Yummy.

Isis purred as she brushed against my legs as I spotted a jade statuette of a cat in one of the shelves in the room.

"That's a very beautiful statuette, Selena."I remarked.

"The Jade Gato."Selina replied. "It's supposed to have powerful mystical properties brings good luck, long life, the usual. Oh, and it is worth three million bucks."

"Whoa."I chuckled in amazement. "That's amazing."

It was interesting.

Though Selina was a vocal animal rights activist, she did have some rare and beautiful objects that were very...cat-like.

As I opened my mouth to say something, Selina and Maven suddenly automatically disappeared from my sight causing me to gasp in shock and drop my teacup on the floor.

"What the heck?!"I shouted as I stood up from the sofa. "Selina! Maven!"

I looked around every side of the apartment, but saw no sign on them.

Where did they go go?

Isis meowed at me causing me to bent down and stroke her chin gently.

"Don't worry, Isis."I assured firmly. "I'll sort this out. Just stay here for now, okay?"

The black cat purred and licked my hand causing me to chuckle at her.

After putting my empty teacup in the sink, I picked up my school bag and went to a room to get changed into Blue Jay.

Once I was in my hero suit, I carefully opened the window door and fired my grappling hook to swing out of the grand apartment.

But when I was on the road driving on my electric scooter to head to Wayne Manor, I notice all the children in the streets around without any parents or guardians with them.

Something was definitely not right here.

Mount Justice

November 5, 20:00 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

"Recognise: Blue Jay: B-00."the computer's voice announced.

I zoomed into the cave on my electric scooter and deactivated it when I arrived inside.

Robin and Zatanna were typing information on the video screens causing me to rush up to them.

"Robin! Zatanna!"I responded. "All the adults are-"

"We know, Jay."Robin finished. "They're gone. So are the members of the Justice League."

I paled what Robin just said.

If the members of the Justice League were gone that meant also Bruce.

I took out my mini laptop to help Robin and Zatanna to see if we could try and figure out what had happened and where all the adults had gone.

However, the three of us began receiving messages from children in different places in the world asking where their parents are.

"So all the children are alone without their parents?"I asked with a hint of worry.

"We've set up a refugee center at the high school gym."Wally declared. "Any luck with...?"

"No."Robin answered. "Can't raise the Batcave, the Hall of Justice or the Watch-"

"The point is."I interrupted. "We can't reach any adult hero. Even Red Arrow. So we are on a dead end."

"Guess we're on our own."Wally admitted."Kid Flash, out."

"Traditional media's off-line. But kids worldwide are all posting the same thing. Every adult 18 or older has disappeared."Zatanna explained and looked at us. "The sorcery necessary to pull this off, scary big."

"And we need you to find its source."Robin instructed.

"How am I-"Zatanna started nervously.

"Robin pull this footage."I ordered as I sent something to Robin using my mini laptop.

Robin nodded and pulled up the cave's security feed from a month ago from just before we and the rest of the Team defeated the Injustice League.

"It's your dad helping us locate Wotan and the Injustice League last month."Robin exclaimed.

The security feed replayed the moment that Zatanna's dad said the spell and the subsequent arrow that had appeared on the holo-map.

"But the words, I mean, that's only part of it."Zatanna admitted. "The rest takes training and...Blue Jay, Robin, I'm just not on Zatara's level."

Me and Robin glanced at each other before I turned to look at Zatanna.

"Look."I responded calmly. "I know what it's like, having to live up to someone else's grandeur. Trust me, I do. But, Zatanna, you're our only hope. And like Robin says-"

"Try to stay whelmed."Robin added with a smile. "We'll find your dad, Batman and all of them. That's what we do."

Zatanna smiled at us as my phone started to suddenly ring.

"Excuse me."I instructed.

I walked a few steps away from Zatanna and Robin to check who was calling me.

It was unknown phone number causing me to answer it.

"Hello?"I asked.

"Glad to know your still alive."the caller declared.

My eyes widen at what the caller just said to me, but I remained calm.

"I'm sorry do I know you?"I questioned with a frown.

"You will soon enough."the voice answered. "See you later, imouto."

I froze hearing what the phone caller just called me before ending the call.

The voice sounded quite robotic so I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl.

But whoever it was, he or she seem to know who I am.

I snapped out of my shock and placed my phone before walking back to Robin and Zatanna.

"Blue Jay, are you okay?"Zatanna asked.

"Yeah."I lied with a smile. "It was a wrong number. Nothing important."

"Really?"Robin questioned.

"Really."I repeated simply.

Then Aqualad arrived into the cave as Kid Flash zoomed in at the same time.

"Blue Jay, tap into all satellite systems."Aqualad ordered.

Robin gently caught my hand and leaned closer to my ear to whisper.

"We'll talk later."Robin stated quietly.

I nodded as Robin walked away to change into his hero suit.

I took out my mini laptop again to tap into the satellite systems on the planet to start a broadcast.

When Dick arrived wearing his Robin suit, I finished the final broadcast set-ups.

"We are live now."I declared.

A broadcast screen appeared in front of Aqualad while Robin, me and Kid Flash were behind him.

There were millions of kids around the world who were suddenly without parents or parental figures and we needed to give them a message to not be afraid.

"Attention, children and teenagers of Earth. I am Aqualad."Aqualad stated. "These are my friends, Robin, Blue Jay and Kid Flash."

"We are using Justice League tech to cast and stream to every TV, radio, computer and smartphone on the planet."Robin explained.

"We know you must be scared and angry."Kid Flash assured. "We know with your parents missing, there's a temptation to run wild."

"But, please, stay calm."I instructed. "We will find a way to bring the adults back. But for now the oldest among you must step up."

"Take care of your younger siblings."Robin replied. "Take care of kids who have no one."

"Protect them."Kid Flash ordered.

"Protège-les."I translated in other languages. "Baohu tamen."

"It is up to you."Aqualad admitted. "Please, help in any way you can."

I ended the signal in my mini laptop as Aqualad left to contact Atlantis.

Soon after, Artemis, Superboy, Miss Martian, joined all of us in the room as Robin pulled up a blue holo-globe for us to see.

"Etacol retnecipe fo yrecros!"Zatanna chanted as she took out her wand.

Then, just like Zatara's spell had before the bayou in Lousiana, a small beacon appeared on the map and this time situated on the Eastern Seaboard.

It seemed like Zatanna was a lot stronger than she thought.

"Coordinates locked in!"Robin exclaimed. "Roanoke Island!"

"You did it, Zatanna."I remarked with a smile. "Good job."

Suddenly a massive lightning bolt struck the floor in the room and we saw a little boy not far from where we were standing.

"It works!"Billy remarked happily.

All of us approached the boy in concern.

"Where did you come from?"Aqualad demanded. "Who are you?"

"Quick, read my mind."Billy instructed.

Miss Martian's eyes glowed green before she let out a soft gasp.

"He's Captain Marvel."Miss Martian admitted.

"Yeah, and I'm Speedy Gonzales."Kid Flash retorted in disbelief. "Look, just because he believes he's Cap..."

"Gee, Wally, do I really have to bring you nachos and pineapple juice...to get on your good side?"Billy asked with a smirk.

I crossed my arms as I spoke to break the stunned silence from my teammates.

"Well that explains the childish behaviour."I admitted in amusement.

Then Billy started to explain what exactly had happened.

It turned all the adults didn't all disappeared, but were been sucked into another dimension that was without children.

And while the rest of the Justice League was trying to control the inciting pandemonium, Batman, Red Tornado and Zatara had been left in Mount Justice in that dimension to try and figure out what was going on.

It was much like me and the Team had done when they had vanished.

But it was good to know there were actually two dimensions coexisting at the same time.

One without adults and one without children.

So it looked like the only way to get everything back to normal was to defeat the magic user responsible at Roanoke Island and merge the dimensions back into one.

Luckily, Captain Marvel was able to travel between the two dimensions so that me and the Team along with the Justice League from the other dimension were able to devise a plan that would hopefully set everything back to the way it was supposed to be.

Roanoke Island

November 6, 00:34 EDT

Me and Robin threw our birdarangs and batarangs as Artemis threw her arrows at Klarion, but the witch boy stopped our weapons with his attacks.

"That's the best you can do?"Klarion asked with a sinister smile.

Klarion sent a blast of lightning straight at us which threw the three of us back.

Aqualad, Kid Flash and Superboy moved forward to try and defeat Klarion themselves.

That didn't work either because as soon as they got close, Klarion activated a red dome-shaped shield around the dimension-splitting pentagram and all three of them bounced off of it, flying backward in different directions.

Zatanna extended a hand towards Klarion.

"Etativel mih ffo eht margatnep!"Zatanna chanted.

a small section of the dome lost its color for a moment, it was back to normal seconds later, and Klarion was still standing.

"Baby magic."Klarion mocked.

Then Klarion said another spell and waved his hand again before Zatanna was thrown back through the air, but Superboy managed to catch her before she hit the ground.

Miss Martian telekinetically threw large boulders on the shield to try and break it, but they didn't do any damage on it.

Klarion opened his mouth and blew a stream of fire straight at Miss Martian causing her to quickly dodge before she was hit.

Kid Flash rushed up to Artemis and me.

"Listen."Kid Flash instructed. "When Fate possessed my body, he defeated Klarion by attacking the cat!"

Flash comes up with the plan to hurt Teekl, but Klarion sees through it. He transforms his familiar into a giant saber-toothed cat and sics it on Superboy.

I looked to the right and saw a dark orange tabby cat sat calmly licking its paw.

That had to be Klarion's anchor to the mortal world.

"Defeat the cat and Klarion will get sent back to whatever demonic dimension he came from."I said in realisation.

"Good."Artemis muttered and pointed an arrow towards the feline. "Not a big cat fan anyway."

Artemis let the arrow fly, but Klarion saw it coming and made it instead turn into a ball of hunter-green yarn, which bounced harmlessly to the ground in front of his cat.

"Show him what the familiar to a Lord of Chaos can do, Teekl."Klarion cackled.

Then Teekl started to change and was turned into some kind of massive sabretooth-like tiger.

Superboy slammed into the massive tiger cat, hefting it up and throwing it down the path.

Suddenly the small gem in the Center of Klarion's pentagram started to glow as lightning arched out of it.

"Ah, so you teamed up with the grumps."Klarion retorted with a unhappy look. "Teamwork is so overrated."

Klarion waved a hand and bolts of lightning erupted from the gem, flew through the air and hit all of us.

Kaldur used his Atlantean sorcery tattoos to redirect the lightning, but me, Artemis and Robin were hit head on and were thrown backward.

I stood up a little to see Billy with Miss Martian and his voice was heard inside my head.

"It's the gem!"Billy declared.

"Don't shout, Billy."Miss Martian instructed. "I've linked you telepathically to the others."

"That's so cool!"Bill exclaimed in excitement before his voice turned serious again. "I mean, it's the gem, at the center of the pentagram. Destroy it and we win!"

"That's all I needed to know."Zatanna declared.

I turned around and saw Zatanna holding the Helmet of Fate in her hands which we had disguised as a rock when we first got to Roanoke Island.

"Zatanna!"Aqualad shouted.

"Stop!"I protested. "You don't know what you're doing!"

Zatanna placed on the Helmet of Fate and allowed Nabu to possess her.

"Klarion!"Doctor Fate shouted in a voice that was a combination of Nabu and Zatanna's own. "This ends now!"

Klarion glared at the appearance of his oldest enemy as Miss Martian spoke to Billy again.

"Billy, tell Zatara!"Miss Martian ordered hurriedly.

"Shazam!"Billy shouted.

Billy disappeared from sight as Klarion sent a blast of reddish-white magic hurtling towards Doctor Fate, but the Doctor matched it with a golden magic blast of his own.

Miss Martian levitated Robin and Artemis out of the way as me and the rest of the Team back away from the fight in front of us.

I crouched beside Robin to check on Robin.

He was okay, but wouldn't be joining the fight again anytime soon.

"Go, Kid."Aqualad ordered.

Kid Flash zoomed away from the area causing me to become confused.

But after a look from Aqualad, I realised that he probably had a plan.

Klarion was getting more angry from Doctor Fate's attacks until Doctor Fate's form started to flicker in Zatanna's hold.

"Ha! There. See?!"Klarion laughed sinisterly. "When the worlds divided, the helmet split too! You're not all here, Nabu and you're losing hold on that poor, soon-to-be-dead girl! She gave up herself for nothing!"

"No, Witch Boy."Doctor Fate answered deeply. "Fate decrees her sacrifice will not be in vain."

Doctor Fate's blast of magic hit Klarion's shield with the force of seventy freight-trains.

Then combined with the efforts of Miss Martian, who continued to throw even bigger boulders at the dome and Aqualar, who was hammering at the shield with his water sledgehammer caused Klarion unable to keep up.

"No, no, no!"Klarion shouted angrily. "No!"

The magic shield dissipated around the Klarion's ensuing temper tantrum and Doctor Fate summoned another ankh, throwing it towards the Lord of Chaos and trapped him in it.

"Now, Kid."Aqualad ordered.

Kid Flash ran forward and picked up the gem before Klarion had time to blink.

"Got it!"Kid Flash shouted and threw the gem to Doctor Fate. "Doc, catch!"

Doctor Fate caught it and started the spell that would bring the two dimensions back together again.

"Yam eht owt emoceb eno ecno erom!"Doctor Fate chanted.

As soon as the spell was over, the pentagram glowed again and four more sorcerers appeared on the other spots indicated in the immediate vicinity.

I smiled happily to see Batman and the other justice league heroes again, knowing Selina and all the other adults in the world were back too.

"Boy, they sure don't make evil immortal sorcerers like they used to."Klarion commented simply. "Oh well."

Klarion snapped his fingers and the ankh he had been trapped in dissipated like blowing sand and the Lord of Chaos stood up to brush off his jacket.

"Fun while it lasted."Klarion declared."Teekl."

Teekl growled at Superboy's face and ran towards Klarion, shifting back into a tabby cat on the way.

The cat jumped into Klarion's arms, just as the sorcerer made a portal appear in the air in front of him.

Before he jumped through, Klarion glanced over his shoulder again to look at us.

"See you later, armadillos!"Klarion cackled maniacally. "Unless I see you first!"

Klarion jumped through the portal while laughing and then he was gone.

Kid Flash rushed up to Doctor Fate.

"Aren't you going to stop him?"Kid Flash asked.

"To what end?"Doctor Fate questioned. "Klarion is chaos personified. He cannot be contained."

I helped Robin stand up and he winced causing him to hold his ribs with his free hand.

"Ugh."Robin groaned, feeling a bit hurt after being knocked unconscious by the lightning. "Did we win?"

"At a cost."Aqualad admitted.

Robin looked me with a confused look causing me to lean over him.

"Zatanna placed on the Helmet of Fate."I explained quietly.

Robin glanced up at where Doctor Fate still hovered in the air as Zatara walked forward.

"Fate!"Zatara shouted. "Great Nabu, release my daughter!"

"No."Doctor Fate responded.

My eyes widened in shock and I felt Robin tighten his grip around my shoulder as Doctor Fate gave an explanation for why exactly he wasn't letting Zatanna go.

"Witness the havoc wrought in these hours."Doctor Fate explained. "The world needs Doctor Fate, and the girl's natural affinity for the mystic arts makes her the perfect candidate."

"You can't do that!"Artemis snapped.

"Yeah!"I snapped in agreement. "Zatanna has her own life to live! You can't just take that away from her!"

"Kent would never allow-"Kid Flash started.

"Kent Nelson did object."Doctor Fate interrupted. "Strenuously. So I released his spirit to the afterlife. He is gone."

All of us looked at each other, not knowing what to do or say.

"Take me instead."Zatara insisted. "My skills are already at their peak. My body is physically stronger; better able to withstand the strain of your power."

"All true."Doctor Fate retorted. "But if I remove the Helmet, what guarantees have I that you will don it?"

"My word."Zatara assured before spreading his arms even wider. "Ekat em daetsni!"

After a few seconds, Doctor Fate landed in front of Zatanna's father and Nabu took off the Helmet.

This caused Zatanna to be in control of her body once more.

When Zatanna saw her father standing in front of her, she ran forward and embraced him.

"Remember."Zatara said as he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his daughter's forehead. "I love you."

Zatara took the Helmet of Fate out of Zatanna's hands before turned to Batman and the rest of us.

"Take care of my girl."Zatara instructed.

"You have my word."Batman replied firmly.

Zatara stepped back again and raised the Helmet above his head.

"No!"Zatanna shouted in horror. "This is my fault! Dad, don't! Dad!"

It was too late.

Zatara was gone and Doctor Fate took his place.

Turning away from Zatanna without a second glance, Doctor Fate flew up into the air and levitated the four captured sorcerers with him.

"Leave these to Fate."Doctor Fate said simply.

Then with another flash of light, all five of them were gone.

As soon as they disappeared, Zatanna fell to her knees causing me, Artemis and Kid Flash to all crouched beside her to provide some semblance of comfort.

But I doubt that changed the feelings that Zatanna had right now.

Mount Justice

November 7, 09:16 EST

The next day, me and the Team helped Zatanna placed boxes into her new room in the cave.

"My room's right next door."M'gann admitted. "If you need anything..."

"Thanks."Zatanna answered quietly and gave M'gann a small smile before she glanced away. "But, right now, I'd like a little alone time, okay?"

"Of course."Artemis responded.

"Take all the time you need, Zatanna."I suggested kindly.

Me, Dick, Artemis and M'gann all left Zatanna in her new room to give her time by herself as the door slowly closed behind us.

Everyone had their parents back, but Zatanna's dad ended up being the new host of Doctor Fate on the other hand.

This was definitely a bittersweet ending.
