Chapter 19: Coldhearted

Wayne Manor

November 11, 08:45 EDT

Emma's POV

I carefully placed food colourings in three bowls of whoopie pie mixtures that I have placed on the kitchen table before putting them in baking trays and bake in the oven for 6 to 8 minutes.

After removing the biscuits from the oven and waiting for them to cool down, I started filling marshmallow cream inside them.

Today was Wally's birthday, so it was fair to make one of his favourite desserts that he liked to eat.

Dick came into the kitchen, just as I finished decorating my homemade treats.

"Hey, Emi."Dick greeted and notice the whoopie pies I made. "Whoa! Baking again?"

I nodded at Dick.

"I made little traditional pies from eastern America."I remarked. "They're soft pies sandwiched with marshmallow cream in between. It is said that whenever people see these pies, they are so excited and scream 'Whoopie!,' hence its name. Hopefully they taste good."

Dick went a few inches closer in my face and placed his finger on my left cheek to taste the small amount of marshmallow cream that was on it.

"Yeah."Dick responded smugly. "It tastes good."

I blushed and gave Dick a playful punch on the elbow causing him to chuckle lightly.

Mount Justice

November 11, 16:05 EST

Blue Jay's POV

I stood next to the others in the darkened common room as we waited for Wally to show up.

"Recognized: Kid Flash B-04."the computer voice said. "Zeta Tube Network Now Off-Line Due To Extreme Atmospheric Conditions."

"Whoa. I just made it."Wally said and then gave a mocking tone. "Be a tragedy if I missed my own..."

"It'd be a tragedy if I missed my own-"

Before he could continue, Miss Martian flicked the lights on again, momentarily blinding Kid Flash as all of us shouted "Surprise!" in unison.

"Aw, you guys!"Wally remarked and acted as if hadn't already totally seen this coming. "You shouldn't have,"

"Right."Dick responded with his arms crossed his arms. "Not like you've been hinting for days or anything,"

Then all of us gathered around the common room's coffee table, where two one-layer cakes that were stuck with birthday candles sat and Wally plopped down in front of them with a birthday hat already tied to his head.

"We made two cakes."Miss Martian commented.

"And made the whoopie pies you like so much."I added.

I bent down next to Wally to lighting the candles on the cakes before backing away.

"Awesome!"Wally exclaimed and glanced at Miss Martian. "What will you guys eat?"

"We'll split the cupcakes."Miss Martian explained. "Make a wish."

"Way ahead of you."Wally stated.

Wally blew off the little flames on the candles causing me and the others to clap and cheer at him.

After he had blown out his candles, Wally leaned over to M'gann again.

"You know."Wally said in a smug tone. "If I tell you my wish, it won't come true. But if you guess..."

Wally trailed off as Miss Martian finished cutting him a slice of cake, blatantly leaving his question open for interpretation.

"Nope."Wally answered simply. "Guess again."

I couldn't stop myself from rolling my eyes as Dick snickered from beside me.

Seriously, I knew Wally wasn't really one to pick up on signals that people were sending him, but really?

Couldn't he see that M'gann only thought of him as a friend?

Glancing across the room, I noticed Artemis looking fairly ticked at Wally's disastrous flirting attempts.

When M'gann kissed Wally's forehead (definitely not the birthday kiss the speedster had been expecting), Artemis' ticked expression changed into a relieved smile.

I nudged gently Dick's shoulder causing him to look at me.

"What?"Dick asked.

"Artemis likes Wally."I admitted in amusement.

Dick quirked an eyebrow.

"What?"Dick repeated, flicking his eyes above my head so he'd be able to see the blonde archer himself. "Seriously?"

"Come on, Boy Wonder."I chuckled, keeping my voice down so the rest of the Team wouldn't hear. "Don't you remember how KF reacted when Artemis died during that awful training simulation? I thought you knew that."

"Well, now I do...pretty bird."Dick sneered with a smirk.

I frowned at Dick for calling me the name that Wally usually called me.

"Don't call me that name too, please."I warned sharply. "One idiot is bad enough."

"Since was I an idiot?"Dick questioned with a mischievous tone. "I was the one who helped you hide your failed geometry-"

My face changed to a warning glare causing Dick to raise his hands in defence.

"Never mind."Dick answered simply.

I then brought my attention to Zatanna, who didn't seem to enjoy being in the part.

The young magician in question was standing off to the side by herself, away from everybody else and I knew she was still struggling to fit in at the cave after losing her dad to Nabu.

Without any hesitation, I grabbed a slice of cake from the coffee table and walked across the room until she stood next to the older girl.

Zatanna glanced at me as I handed over the small plate and I could see that the magician was decidedly not in a birthday party mood at the moment.

"Are you getting settled in okay?"I asked quietly.

"Oh, yeah."Zatanna answered and took the cake while tilting her head to the side. "It's just like home."

"Look."I commented, trying my best to be reassuring. "I know it's hard to be the new girl in a place like this-"

I waved my hand around the common room and decided to go for the humorous side of things such as Wally stuffing his face with my whoopie pies.

"But, one day, I promise, you will get used to watching Wally eat."I assured smugly.

Dick lowered his snorted laughter from behind me as I share a smile with Zatanna.

Then Artemis walked up to us.

"Think we should tell him?"Artemis asked.

Artemis jerked her head in Wally's direction causing us to follow her gaze.

The redhead speedster was still trying to make M'gann kiss me with his poor flirtatious attempts.

"You're getting warmer, babe."Wally flirted as M'gann cut another slice of cake for him. "But I can make you warmer still."

"His the only one who doesn't know."Dick declared with a smirk.

"Then, please, allow me."Artemis remarked.

Me, Zatanna and Dick watched as Artemis went to sit behind Wally and whispers it in his ear; hearing it and seeing Megan and Conner eat together which dampens his birthday spirit.

Suddenly Batman's serious voice on the PA speaker interrupted the party.

"Attention, Team. Suit up."Batman ordered. "Polar Stealth. Mission briefing in five."

All of us headed to our locker rooms to get change into our polar stealth hero suits.

Since it was mysteriously snowing outside, it was obvious that we were going to stop the ones responsible for this cold situation.

Then me and the Team, minus Flash and Red Tornado, headed to the main cave, where a large holo-screen with Batman's face on it was hovering in the center of the room.

"Where's Flash?"Kid Flash asked.

"Flash and Red Tornado already have their assignments."Batman answered and showed a hologram of five flying ice fortresses. "A massive ice storm has paralyzed North America...from coast to coast. Satellite imagery has detected five flying ice fortresses, source unknown which seem to be responsible and must be stopped."

"Can't the Watchtower blow them out of the sky or something?"Kid Flash questioned.

I elbowed Kid Flash in the ribs at the slip-up, but it was too late.

"What's a Watchtower?"Zatanna asked.

Batman sighed before responding to the young magician.

"The league's orbiting headquarters is not weaponized."Batman explained. "And with both Green Lanterns off-world, I need all hands on deck."

My eyes widen as an energetic feeling developed inside my body of hearing Batman's order.

"Does that mean what I think it means?"Robin asked excitedly as he took a few steps forward. "The league and the Team fighting side by side?"

"Awesome."I whispered with a small smile.

"Whoa, really?"Kid Flash remarked.

"Superboy, use the Super-Cycle to rendezvous with the Batplane at Ice Fortress 1."Robin ordered. "You'll drop off Robin, Blue Jay and Aqualad, then continue on with Wolf to meet up with Black Canary and Red Tornado at Ice Fortress 2. Miss Martian, Artemis, Zatanna, take the Bio Ship and rendezvous with Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter at Fortress 3. Other leaguers will deal with Fortresses 4 and 5. Sending all coordinates now."

"Uh, Batman?"Kid Flash responded. "I think you skipped..."

I watched as Kid Flash grinned and rubbed his hands together in excitement.

"Kid Flash, a young girl in Seattle is in desperate need of a heart transplant."Batman declared. "With all conventional air traffic grounded by the storm...you'll need to pick up the donor heart in Boston and run it 3000 miles across country."

"Who is this girl?"Kid Flash asked.

"Does it matter?"Batman retorted in a sharp tone.

Kid Flash sighed and looked down at his feet.

"No, of course not, but can't we Zeta..."Kid Flash started.

"Zeta-Tubes are off-line."Robin reminded. "Sorry."

"Right. Then how can I say no?"Kid Flash asked with a hint of sadness and went back to his normal mode. "Guess I won't be needing stealth. Speedy Delivery Boy, at your service."

I took out my mini laptop just in time to see Batman sent me the coordinates before we headed to the Super-Cycle while Miss Martian, Artemis and Zatanna headed to the Bio-Ship.

Me, Robin and Aqualad sat on the Super-Cycle as Superboy rode the cycle out of the cave exit before noticing Kid Flash running across the snow covered ground and the Bio-Ship flew into the sky.

I felt sort of bad that Kid Flash was going to miss out at the first ever team up with the Justice League.

But hopefully he will able to deliver that heart transplant to that poor girl, who desperately needs it.

When Superboy brought me, Robin and Aqualad to Ice Fortress-1, we began to fight beside our mentors on the ship.

Robin and I used our explosive batarangs and birdarangs to make some of the ship's cannons explode while Aqualad and Flash took out the rest.

I took out a birdarang with silver linings and carefully placed on the ship as it started to beep while flashing in a blue colour.

"Guys!"I shouted. "We need to leave now!"

As soon as I said that, all of us immediately left Ice Fortress 1 on the Super-Cycle while Batman took off on his Batplane.

I took out my mini laptop and pressed its activation button.

Then a few seconds later, the ship exploded in a big explosion.

Mission accomplished.

Gotham City

November 13, 12:45 EDT

Emma's POV

Me and Dick sat down in a Pizza Hut restaurant waiting for our order while talking to Wally on my phone through video chat.

"Dude, we just heard. You saved an entire country."Dick remarked. "Major kudos."

"What can I say?"Wally remarked. "I'm the man."

"You sure fooled Count Vertigo real good with your trump card, Wally."I chuckled. "So Queen Perdita is officially safe now, right?"

"No need to worry about Count Heartless, sugar."Wally declared smugly. "His jailed in Belle Reve for his royal fall from grace. Catch you both later."

Wally ended the call as I placed my phone away before letting out a sigh.

"You okay, Emi?"Dick asked.

"Yeah."I answered with a smile. "I was sort of shocked when they reported that Perdita was dead. But I'm glad it was just part of Wally's plan in order for the Count to reveal his treason against his own niece. Anyway I'm glad nothing bad happened."

"Me too."Dick agreed. "It's been a good day for all of us."

Then a waiter walked forward placed and placed a seafood pizza plate on our table.

"Aren't you two the cutest couple ever."the waiter declared.

I blushed a little as Dick rubbed the back of his neck before we started eating the slices of our seafood pizza.

"Mmmmmm!"I murmured in delight. "An Italian seafood pizza with enriched flavour from using basil. It tastes yummy."

"It also tastes good with the pesto on it."Dick added.

I nodded at Dick before wiping my mouth with a tissue.

"Emma..."Dick said.

"Yes, Dick-"I started.

The soon as I turned my head to look at Dick, my eyes widen a bit when he brought his face closer and planted his lips onto mine causing me to kiss him back.

I felt my heart beat slowly in my chest as soon as me and Dick stopped our kiss.

"I love you, Emma."Dick admitted. "I always had. Even the times that I didn't show it."

"I-I love you too, Dick."I replied with a shy smile. "And I want to always be with you. No matter what."

Dick and I looked at each other lovingly before we continued eating lunch together.

We were now a couple just like M'gann and Conner.

But I wonder if Bruce will approve of it when he finds out.

Oh well, both me and Dick were going to find out sooner or later. That's for sure.
