Chapter 21: Emma meets her Mother

Watchtower

November 25, 06:54 EST

Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman stood together on one of the large extending platforms within the Watchtower, overlooking the gardens, where a flock of birds were chirping and squawking as they went by.

"Times like these."Black Canary said solemnly. "One feels the very weight of the world upon us."

The sound of footsteps from behind made all three Leaguers turn to see Aquaman walking towards them from deeper inside the Watchtower.

"Everyone is here."Aquaman stated.

The other three heroes followed him into the meeting room of the Watchtower, where Flash, both Green Lanterns, Red Tornado, Captain Marvel, Captain Atom, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, Doctor Fate and the Hawks were all waiting for them.

As Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Superman walked inside the room, panels started to slide down, sealing off the room for privacy before Aquaman spoke up again.

"Our agenda is clear."Aquaman declared. "What's at stake should not be underestimated."

"The decisions we make today will reverberate for years to come."Superman explained.

"And influence whether or not the world continues to put their trust in the Justice League."Wonder Woman added.

"Please, take your seats."Batman instructed. "We have work to do."

Once everyone had sat down at the large, horseshoe-shaped table in the center of the room, Martian Manhunter stood up to give his opinion.

"Another expansion of the League could generate another escalation of hostilities from our enemies."Martian Manhunter commented. "No one needs or wants another Injustice League."

"Point taken."Superman cut in from his spot beside Martian Manhunter. "But, the option remains to vote 'no' on all candidates. So, I nominate Icon for League membership."

A holo-screen appeared above the table and showcased a tall dark-skinned man with a stern look on his face.

"Why?"Green Arrow scoffed. "Because you suspect Icon might be Kryptonian? Like you did with Captain Marvel?"

"You thought I was Kryptonian?"Captain Marvel asked with a smile. "Cool!"

Superman and Wonder Woman stared at the other hero for a moment.

"Icon interests me also."Wonder Woman said quietly before bringing forth another holo-screen, this one as a young woman with short hair and brown skin. "As does his protege, Rocket. Athena knows the League could use more female members."

Black Canary smirked. "Agreed."

"Here here."Hawkgirl said.

Black Canary and Hawkgirl gave their agreement while the male members of the Justice League looked fairly disconcerted.

Emma's POV

I placed on a pale green shirt with a bright blue jacket, grey trousers and a pair of black trainers before tying my hair in a braided ponytail.

Once I was ready, I left my bedroom and headed down stairs.

The weather outside was cold, but it was not surprising.

It was Thanksgiving Day in Gotham and I didn't feel happy like I used to be.

Dad, well, Batman was currently up on the Watchtower at the yearly Justice League meeting discussing whatever it was and would probably come back late.

But there was also another occasion today that I still couldn't believe was going to happen.

Today is also the day that I would meet my mum.

My biological mum.

When I headed to the kitchen, I saw Dick helping Alfred cook a turkey and few other delicious meals for Thanksgiving.

"I never expected to see you cook, Dick."I remarked with a smirk.

"Hey."Dick chuckled. "There is a first time for everything, birdie."

Alfred pulled the casserole from the oven and the warm smell invaded the kitchen.

"Miss Emma."Alfred spoke up. "I assume Master Bruce has told you where you need to go today?"

"Yes."I answered and took out my phone. "He showed me the location to the area."

"We'll take my bike to get there."Dick insisted.

I nodded before the two of us headed outside the manor, where Dick's motorcycle was.

Dick handed a helmet for me to wear before I wrapped by arms around his waist.

My boyfriend placed a helmet on his head as well before looking at me.

"Ready?"Dick asked with a playful smile.

"I was born ready."I answered smugly.

The gates of the manor opened as Dick started his motorcycle and we headed to our destination.

Watchtower

November 25, 11:10 EST

A image of a well-built young man of average height with light tan skin and spiky red hair wearing a black mask known as Draco appeared on the screen.

Draco wore a black t-shirt, black and white pants with multiple brown belts over his chest which were used to carry his sword, strapped black gloves and a pair of black combat boots.

He was Hawkman's protégé and appeared to be fifteen years old.

"I nominate Draco."Hawkman declared with a hint of pride. "He has more experience and excellent fighting skills."

"Then, I nominate Red Arrow."Green Arrow admitted. "Roy is not a kid anymore. He's eighteen, a legal adult. He's ready."

"No."Superman answered simply. "Red Arrow may be eighteen, but the rest of the Team is too young. We're not inducting children into the League."

Captain Marvel tugged at his collar, but didn't say anything.

"That seems myopic."Doctor Fate commented. "I have been one with Kid Flash and Aqualad. And though the latter continues to doubt her own abilities. Both are ready."

"And what of Zatanna?"Wonder Woman suggested.

"Absolutely not!"Doctor Fate interrupted angrily.

"That sounded almost protective, Doctor."Wonder Woman remarked. "At least we know Zatara is still in that Helmet somewhere."

"Why is Doctor Fate a member?"Captain Marvel questioned as he stood up and narrowed his eyes at the Lord of Order. "You coerced Zatara into giving up his life to you, or else lose his daughter. Not cool."

"Should such behavior be condoned?"Red Tornado asked.

"Zatara desires Doctor Fate remain in the League."Doctor Fate declared calmly.

"Oh, please."Green Arrow muttered in disbelief.

"It is true."Doctor Fate responded with his arms crossed. "Zatara's trust in Nabu is...measured. He desires the League to keep a close watch upon us."

Gotham

November 25, 11:21 EDT

Me and Dick rode on the streets of Gotham and arrived outside the apartment hotel that was not far from Wayne Manor.

Dick parked his motorcycle near a few cars as I stared at the building in front of us.

The two of us headed inside the apartment and took the elevator to head to the top floor.

Hotel Room 203.

This was it.

I slowly headed to the door of the apartment with Dick right next to me and knocked on the door.

"Come in."A female voice said. "The door is opened."

My heart was slowly beating as my hand reached out to touch the door knob.

Why do I feel so nervous?

Is it because I fear about being rejected by my mother or learning more about my birth family?

I snapped out of my thoughts when Dick gave a me a kiss on my left cheek.

"Everything will be alright."Dick assured. "I'm here for you."

I smiled at my boyfriend before I took a deep breath and then gently let it out.

Then I opened the door and heading inside the apartment room, where I saw a woman standing near a chimney and looking at a few photos on it.

My eyes widen a bit as the woman turned around to look at me.

The woman appeared to be in her late 20s and had the same purple eyes I had. She had shoulder-length wavy black hair and wore a sky blue chanel suit with white tights and black shoes.

Me and the woman slowly walked forward to greet each other.

"You must be Emma."the woman said with a gentle smile. "My name is Keiko Miyasaki."

"Hi, I'm Emma Wayne."I responded. "It's nice to meet you, Keiko."

Keiko and I shook hands with each other before she notice Dick next to me.

"And you are?"Keiko asked.

"Richard Grayson, ma'am."Dick answered. "But you can call me, Dick."

Keiko nodded at Dick and looked at me.

"Your boyfriend?"Keiko guessed with a small smirk.

A blush crept up my face as Dick rubbed the back of his neck.

"Y-Yes."I replied with a shy smile.

Keiko served me and Dick some green tea and home made dango for us to enjoy eating before the two of us went to sit down with my boyfriend at my side.

"I kept wondering why...you left me."I spoke up.

Keiko leaned forward and held both of my hands across the table gently.

"Of course, you wondered."Keiko agreed."And now that I've met you I know you will understand. I'll tell you exactly what happened. But I'm afraid you'll have to face one thing, my dear girl. Your father was a professional assassin."

A startled look grew on my face.

"I was so young. You must remember that."Keiko commented."I lived in Tokyo, Japan and lived quite of a luxury life. When I turned seventeen, I started travelling around the world to become a journalist. But then of course...I met a man."

"My dad?"I guessed.

Keiko nodded at me.

"You can't believe how handsome he was. He had the same dark chocolate hair you have and cool hazel eyes."Keiko exclaimed. "He was a Staff sergeant in the United States Army Special Forces. I met him during my trip in New York and well...we fell in love."

Keiko paused for moment as I waited for her to continue.

"He asked me to marry him and I agreed. I was so happy. He said he would get the papers we needed. I knew nothing. I had never been away from home before."Keiko explained. "We went through a wedding ceremony in an office and then we set off on our honeymoon. A week after that he vanished. He simply disappeared off the face of the Earth. I tried to trace him through the army, but they'd never heard of him. I was desperate...I trusted him completely."

I felt Dick place his hand onto mine before Keiko continued talking.

"And then...I found out that I was expecting a child."Keiko admitted as she shook a little. "I don't know if I should speak to you so frankly, but I imagine that children brought up as you have been learning things early."

"Yes."I answered with a small nod.

"I was so scared. I knew my mother would kill me if she found out...the disgrace and shame. The wedding was only a sham, you see."Keiko replied with a hint of sadness and anger. "So, I pretended that I was still doing my travels. You were born in a hospital in Gotham during the summer term. I knew I couldn't take you with me, so I wrapped you up...and...took you to a park...and laid you down on a bench...and then I took a plane back to Tokyo."

"You left me in a park?"I scoffed. "Any lunatic would've took me, but I was one of the lucky ones."

"I didn't know where else to take you!"Keiko panicked with a hint of fear. "I was so confused. My mother would've killed me, if she knew about you. I-I didn't have a choice."

My eyes moved down to the floor for a moment before looking back at Keiko again.

"And you never found my father?"I questioned. "You never saw him again?"

Keiko shook her head.

"Never."Keiko answered with a small frown. "I think he must be dead. It would be better if you thought him so."

I didn't say anything as I was going through the story in my mind.

"When I can back home, I was so lonely and sad."Keiko explained as she clenched her hands. "My mother was first suspicious of my behaviour, but I told her it was all because I missed travelling and she fell for it. For the next four years, I started working as a priestess in my family's shrine and later got engaged to a man from a good family. So I married him and soon after our daughter was born. We named her Ayumi."

A surprised look grew on my face.

"So...I have a step-father and a little sister?"I asked with a small smile.

"That's right."Keiko agreed. "And I should tell you why I have decided to come now. My mother has passed away not so long ago and now I am in charge of our family's dojo. We train our young family members in fighting in the traditional kenjutsu style of a samurai."

"Samurai?"Me and Dick asked at the same time.

"It's how they say a family thing."Keiko complemented. "My ancestors were the old samurai that once protected Japan from invaders."

"Whoa..."I said in amazement.

"So, you're like ninjas?"Dick guessed.

Keiko frowned a bit and shook her head.

"Ninjas are trained to be spies and assassins."Keiko admitted and rubbed her left arm. "They're usually members of a death cult like the League of Shadows. But not all ninjas are bad."

"You know about the League of Shadows?"I suggested.

"Yes, but I rather not talk about it."Keiko answered in a hurtful tone as she fiddled with a locket that was around her neck. "There are some things I don't have the courage to tell."

Me and Dick share a glance with each other before a beeping sound was heard causing Dick to take out his phone.

"Excuse me."Dick instructed and stood up. "I need to take this."

Dick took out his phone and headed out of the apartment.

"Emma."Keiko responded.

"Yes?"I said with a smile.

"Emma, listen. I know I have no right to ask this, but is there a chance that someday we could live together?"Keiko asked hopefully. "The way a mother and daughter are supposed to live? A way a family lives?"

I fell silent at Keiko's question for a moment before responding.

"Keiko...that won't happen. I'm sorry."I apologised. "The truth is I already have a home and a family. So I'm afraid the chance of living together won't be possible. But there is one thing, just remember to tell Ayumi that you brought me into this world when she grows up."

Keiko didn't say anything as she looked down.

"Because when I think about if you haven't given birth to me, I would get really sad."I stated and began to tear up a little. "Then this would mean I wouldn't exist and that would mean...I wouldn't have my amazing life with Bruce, Dick, Barbara, Bette, Yosuke and met other people or have my amazing life. Even know this wonderful wide world. How awful. How awful...for not being born at all."

Tears began to appear in Keiko's as she covered her mouth.

"Oh, don't cry."I begged softly as tears fell down her face and held Keiko's free hand. "What I'm trying to say is I am very grateful to you for giving birth to me, Keiko. So, thank you..."

Keiko covered her face to cry as I stood up to comfort her while tears slowly fell down from my eyes.

I felt Keiko wrap her arms around me before she looked at me with a warm but weak smile.

"I understand, Emma."Keiko assured in a soft tone.

Watchtower

November 25, 12:05 EST

"Plastic Man."Batman stated.

A holo-screen of Plastic Man appeared above the Justice League's meeting table and Captain Marvel let out a chuckle though he quickly covered it up with his hand.

"I don't know."Flash said, leaning forward in his seat and holding out a hand. "The guy's got a pretty substantial criminal record."

Captain Marvel burst out laughing, though he also quickly held up a hand to ward off any reprimands.

"Sorry."Captain Marvel apologised, wiping a tear that had escaped out of his eye. "I'm sorry. The guy just cracks me up."

Every other Leaguer was staring at Captain Marvel, as if they had all suddenly been reminded that, despite Superman's statement earlier that they weren't allowing children into the Justice League, the team of adult heroes, had, in fact, already inducted one.

"Maybe it's time we all talked about the elephant in the room?"Flash asked before addressing the rest of the League. "Should Captain Marvel stay a member, now that we really only know that he's ten years old?"

"He does possess an adult body and the Wisdom of Solomon."Red Tornado complemented.

"Wisdom."Aquaman interrupted in a sharp tone. "Does not equal maturity."

"Hey!"Captain Marvel exclaimed, a bit exasperated. "I'm sitting right here!"

"Then, Billy."Black Canary replied gently. "Maybe you should leave until we've hashed this out."

"No."Batman answered. "Captain Marvel is a member and is entitled to participate until or unless he's voted out."

"It's not just his age."Wonder Woman interrupted sternly. "It's the fact that he lied about it."

"I didn't lie...exactly."Captain Marvel said before glancing to the side. "I just left out the part about being a kid."

"A lie of omission is still a lie."Wonder Woman admitted. "You kept an important secret from us. No one in the League knew the truth."

"I knew."Batman declared honestly.

Wonder Woman twisted around in her chair to glare at the Dark Knight, fists clenched above the table.

"I don't know why I'm surprised."Wonder Woman retorted. "Since you indoctrinated Robin into crime-fighting at the ripe old age of nine."

"Robin needed to help bring the man who murdered his family to justice..."Batman started.

"So he could turn out like you?"Wonder Woman scoffed.

"So that he wouldn't."Batman corrected calmly.

"What about Blue Jay?"Black Canary questioned. "You raised her since she was just an infant. Did you tell her everything? Including her family ties? She has the right to know."

"She is still young."Batman replied. "I will tell her when she is ready."

Wonder Woman frowned. "All of them are young, Batman."

Wayne Manor

November 25, 17:32 EDT

I silently returned to Wayne Manor with Dick after my conversation with Keiko.

It turns Keiko has only stayed to Gotham for a few days and was going to leave tomorrow to head back to Tokyo.

I had a feeling that she wanted me to come with her, but I knew I couldn't and that hurt me deep down.

My place is here in Gotham which meant Blue Jay the Girl Wonder was still here to stay.

The moment we came home, I went to my room and took off my jacket before sitting down in my bed to check on my phone.

Keiko sent me photos of her spending time with my step-father Hayato Ueno and Ayumi.

Hayato wore a silver grey business suit with short caramel blonde hair and dark pastel blue eyes.

Ayumi was a cute little girl with long caramel blonde wavy twin-tails with straight-cut bangs and purple eyes wearing a bright blue dress while hugging a teddy bear plush in her arms.

She had her father's hair colour and Keiko's eyes just like me except they were a bit darker.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Dick came inside my room.

"Hey."Dick greeted as he went to sit next to me in my bed. "So how are you feeling?"

"Great."I answered and showed Dick my phone. "Keiko sent me some family photos on her family. They seem like good people."

Dick looked at the photos on my phone and smiled.

"Yeah."Dick chuckled. "They sure do. Your sister is cute."

"Maybe when I have more free time, I would visit them in Tokyo."I suggested. "You know, if Bruce lets me."

"He would."Dick assured with a smile. "They're your family. As we are."

My eyes locked with Dick's.

"You're my hime, Emi."Dick admitted.

"You do realise the word 'hime' means princess in Japanese, right?"I asked.

"I know."Dick answered smugly. "It suits you."

"Sure it does, boy wonder."I said in a sarcastic tone.

Me and Dick smirked at each other before we closed our eyes and gently kissed.

"The Team's going to freak."Dick whispered.

A small laugh escaped my mouth before I wrapped my arms around his neck.

"Let them."I responded.

This time I was the one who kissed Dick, leaning back again after a few more seconds.

Then Dick lead me out of the room and we arrived to the dining room, where Alfred prepared a whole set of food for dinner including his famous mouth watering fried turkey.

"Whoa, Alfred."I chuckled in amazement. "You've done it again. Everything looks great."

Alfred smiled. "Thank you, Miss Emma."

"I helped too, remember?"Dick reminded in a sing song tone.

"I know, Chef Grayson."I said with a mischievous grin. "I never forgot that."

An Hour Later...

Bruce and Selina arrived to Wayne Manor together, only to find Dick and Emma in the sofa, fast asleep and judging by their appearances, they were watching TV together but soon fell asleep.

"Hopefully, Emma's meeting with her mother was successful."Selina suggested.

Bruce places a blanket on Dick and Emma to keep them warm before smiling at them.

"I guess it was."Bruce responded with a small smile.

Author's Note: Emma has finally met her birth mother and wants to meet the rest of the family. But Batman is hiding something from her. What could it be?
