Chapter 22: Performance

Bruges

December 22, 20:08 CET

Jack Haly opened the Bruges performance of his circus with his latest act: the Daring Dangers.

"Dames en Heren!"Haly exclaimed and appeared on the stage. "Mesdames et Messieurs! Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the Haly International Travelling Circus! Where the world at the center ring is your oyster!"

Haly swung his arm out and a spotlight travelled up the length of the pole to the trapeze platform up top.

"And these are our latest pearls: The Daring Dangers!"Haly announced before pointing his staff to the top. "Dan Danger!"

Dan Danger aka Robin grabbed the trapeze when it neared his hands and swung over the gap before grabbing another trapeze as two other members were introduced next.

"Dawn Danger! Darla Danger!"

Dawn Danger aka Miss Martian and Darla Danger aka Blue Jay came in from the opposite direction and swung themselves onto the small trapeze bars and landed securely.

"Diane Danger! Dane Danger! And Dean Danger!"

Down on the floor, Diane Danger aka Artemis and Dane Danger aka Roy both readied their bows with the trick arrows while Dean Danger aka Superboy was acting as the act's strong man.

Conner tossed several open-ended barrels into the air as Roy and Artemis let go of their bowstrings, the trick arrows sending streams of sparks as Robin, Miss Martian and Blue Jay slipped through the barrels with ease.

The crowd cheered loudly at the Daring Dangers.

"You'll never see another trapeze act like this, folks!"Haly declared. "And all performed without a net!"

M'gann held Emma's ankles before they swung, heading towards Robin.

However, Dick wasn't able to catch Emma's hand and began heading down.

"Robin!"Miss Martian shouted.

"Don't blow our cover."Robin instructed.

"But saving your life's okay?"Superboy inquired.

Superboy launched a barrel into the air which pushed Robin back up.

Robin and Blue Jay's hands were a short grip from touching, but the boy wonder suddenly levitated and the brunette held his hand tightly.

"What did I just say?"Robin questioned.

"The crowd couldn't see me use telekinesis from below."Miss Martian stated. "Besides, I've been using it all night. I'm not exactly the acrobat you are."

Miss Martian let go of Blue Jay's ankles making her and Robin spin on the platform and wave at the cheering crowd.

"Yeah, neither am I right now."Robin responded. "I think I caught that 24-hour bug that's been going around the circus. But the show must go on."

Blue Jay gives Robin a sad frown before she gave kept smiling and waving.

Blue Jay's POV

"Put your hands together for the Daring Dangers!"Haly remarked.

I stood with Robin, Miss Martian, Artemis, Red Arrow and Superboy waving after finishing our performance.

My attention went on my boyfriend, only to see a few beads of sweat running down the side of his head and kept a weak smile on his face.

"Are you feeling okay?"I asked softly.

"No. I didn't think I make it through."Dick admitted. "Help me backstage."

With the Daring Dangers act done, the six of us headed backstage where the other performers were.

I saw the blonde haired man known as Ray gave the fire breather a stick-like thing before he pushed through the curtain to do his performance.

Once we were backstage, I looked down on the floor to reflect on what happened.

Suddenly Roy nudged me on the elbow causing me to glance at him and we saw two performers arguing with Haly about them being replaced by us.

"Was your slot, until you missed that performance in Paris."

"Carlo was sick. He's better now. Plus, those Dangers are a sham."

"They say they're brothers and sisters. They don't even look alike."

"You just don't like the competition."Haly replied.

When Haly finished talking to Carlo and his brother, he got confronted by Interpol agent King Faraday, who has been monitoring Jack because he suspects him to be behind the thefts.

"Oh, for crying out loud, not you again."Haly complained. "We're in the middle of a show."

"Then we'll talk after."the white haired man stated gruffly. "But we will talk. Another city last week. Another tech firm robbed. Another stop on your tour. If I prove you're responsible, I will shut you down."

"I've got three minutes to gather props and get back to the center ring."Haly admitted.

When Haly walked away, the white haired man glanced towards me and the group.

"Faraday. Interpol."the white haired man said as he reached into his inside jacket pocket and brought out a wallet, flipping it open to reveal a shiny badge. "New act?"

"Yeah."Dick replied as I pretended to brush my hair. "Just joined the tour."

"Probably clears you. But don't get too comfortable."Agent Faraday warned and placed his wallet away. "Haly's going down for this."

Dick narrowed his eyes as Faraday walked away while I bit my lip.

We need to find the thieves responsible for these robberies soon or else my boyfriend's old home gets shut down.

That night, after the show was over, the six of us got dressed in our hero costumes and went into the city of Bruges, eventually stopping at the edge of a warehouse complex.

I took out my mini laptop to identify the next place to be hit by whoever these international tech thieves were and the warehouse was it.

"If Interpol's already on this...why are we bothering?"Superboy questioned.

"Because Batman said so."Robin replied. "Why? You had something better to do?"

"How do we know the thieves will hit here?"Artemis asked.

"There are more obvious targets."Red Arrow answered.

"And Faraday'll have them covered."I added and checked my mini laptop. "I've analysed the tech already stolen and the pattern suggests this is the place."

"How are you feeling?"Miss Martian asked.

"Lousy, actually."Robin answered with a tired look. "But I'll manage."

"Are you sure?"I questioned.

Robin smirked. "Yes...birdie."

I rolled my eyes with a playful smirk before Superboy spoke up with a status update.

"Contact."Superboy declared. "Northeast quadrant."

I glanced towards where Conner had indicated and saw a shadowy figure dressed in dark clothing approaching the fence encircled the entire warehouse compound before he vaulted off the streetlight that was next to the fence and flipped over the barbed wire.

The movement of the intruder seemed to be only been performed by someone with a background in gymnastics...or acrobatics.

"Looks like we know why Carlo missed a performance."Superboy muttered.

"Could be Carlo. Could be his brother."Robin suggested. "Keep an open mind. And move in."

Robin and I leaped off the roof they had been crouching on, landing just inside the warehouse compound's fence, joining Artemis, Red Arrow and Miss Martian against one of the warehouse's outside walls.

Then Superboy landed a few meters away from the rest of us.

"Did you see where he went?"I asked.

Superboy narrowed his eyes to scan the area and he looked at the warehouse.

"The warehouse."Superboy answered.

Me and the Team immediately went inside the warehouse and were up in the rafters just in time to see the thief use a crowbar to crack open a nearby crate and slip a piece of tech out.

Robin let out one of his signature cackling laughs and the intruder spun around, obviously not realising that we were even there.

"Caught red handed."Robin sneered. "Red faced too, I'll bet."

"Acrobatics won't get you out of this."Artemis stated.

Suddenly the thief blew a massive stream of fire out of a torch causing all of us to move out of the way.

"Those crates are full of live ammo!"Red Arrow shouted. "Move."

Suddenly Robin dove at me, knocking us off from where the crates stood, just as they exploded, sending pieces of wood careening throughout the warehouse.

Superboy used some discarded sheets of metal as a makeshift shield when the warehouse itself exploded around us, so all of us were protected from the fire.

"That guy's dead meat."Superboy retorted in a grim tone.

Superboy tried to run after the thief, but Robin stopped him as I helped Miss Martian.

"Superboy, no!"Robin protested. "You need to get her out."

"He's getting away."Superboy reminded.

I became outraged at Superboy's sudden careless behaviour.

"And that matters more than Miss M?"I questioned in disbelief. "The fire's killing her!"

This snapped Superboy out of his rage as he quickly went over to his girlfriend.

"Right, right."Superboy responded.

Superboy picked up Miss Martian and quickly brought her out of the burned warehouse.

"Jay, Artemis, Arrow."Robin said tiredly. "Find the thief."

"Because he matters more than you?"Artemis asked.

"You're still off your game, pal."Red Arrow replied. "We're getting you out too."

Me, Artemis and Red Arrow took Robin quickly out of the warehouse before the whole building tumbled down in the ground.

Bruges

December 23, 14:08 CET

The six of us in our Daring Danger costumes were hovered outside the circus tent, where Haly was once again arguing with Agent Faraday.

"Another weapons plant is hit, and once again the circus is in town."Agent Faraday said.

"I don't believe in coincidences."Haly retorted. "I don't care what you believe. My people are not responsible. I did a bed check last night. Every single member of my troupe was asleep in their bunks."

When Haly finished arguing with the agent, me and the Team headed back to our train car, where we trying to get an idea as to who their mystery thief might be.

"So two thieves, right?"Artemis said. "The fire breather and one of the acrobats."

"Dressed in identical clothes."Miss Martian commented.

"Maybe not just two."Robin replied as he checked his wrist computer.

Robin pulled up two separate security feeds, one showing the thief bending the bars of a window and the other showing the thief walking along a telephone wire.

"Here's the Madrid security footage."Robin admitted. "And now Paris."

"So the strongman and the clown too."Roy said. "If the entire circus is involved, Haly himself may be the mastermind."

"Roy..."I started.

"You don't know that."Robin reminded.

"It would explain his lies."Miss Martian suggested.

"I told you to keep an open mind."Robin scowled.

Robin stormed out of the room causing me to stand up and go after him.

This so called mole problem is really starting to get in my nerves and Roy still believes there is one in the Team.

I don't know why, but sometimes I feel there is something off about Roy.

It feels like he is a stranger to me even though me, Dick, Wally and Kaldur have known him for so long.

I snapped out of my thoughts when I caught up with Robin, who was staring at an old poster of his family; The Flying Graysons.

"Hey."I greeted gently.

"Hey."Dick responded and looked down. "Emma. You don't actually think Haly's the mastermind behind this, do you?"

My hands circled around Dick's waist to hug him from behind.

"This circus is where you grew up, Dick and...where I first met you."I exclaimed. "Of course, I don't believe Haly and his circus are behind the robberies."

"Thanks, Emi."Dick thanked quietly. "That means a lot."

Dick brought his face forward to kiss me, but I quickly placed my hands on his chest to defend myself.

"What?"Dick asked.

"We're supposed to act like siblings since we are undercover at the moment."I reminded with an apologetic smile.

"Way to kill the moment, Darla."Dick muttered with a frown.

I covered my mouth to giggle at Dick's respond.

A while later, everyone in the circus began to pack up after finishing their show in Bruges.

"Pack it up!"Haly ordered while grabbing onto the nearby handle of the train car. "The train leaves for Geneva in two hours!"

Once everyone was done packing, all of us boarded inside and the train began heading to Geneva.

Dick and I headed back to the room that was designated to the Daring Dangers to meet up with the others.

Artemis looked at Dick.

"You look better."Artemis commented.

"I feel better."Dick responded and looked at Miss Martian, who was laying down. "I'm sorry, M...Dawn. I hope you didn't catch it from me."

"I feel so silly."Miss Martian stated. "Who knew a Martian could be vulnerable to a human virus?"

"Uh...H.G. Wells."Dick joked.

"When did you first feel sick, Dawn?"I asked in concern. "You were completely fine before."

"Just after boarding the train."Miss Martian answered. "It came on suddenly.

"Same with me the other night."Dick admitted. "I remember Ray rubbed my head for good luck right before we went on. That was after I prevented him from touching Darla."

"Ray? That roustabout?"Superboy said. "He touched her before we boarded. Guy must be a walking Petri dish."

The pieces slowly started coming together in my mind as I realised something.

"Yeah...maybe."I said quietly.

Then me and Dick ran out, almost slamming ourselves into the wall of the train.

"Dan, Darla!"Haly exclaimed happily. "You look refreshed."

"Thanks."Dick thanked. "Jack, how long has Ray worked for you?"

"Picked him up at the start of the European tour."Haly responded. "Poor lad's down with the same flu as the rest of them."

Artemis, Red Arrow and Superboy went behind me and Dick.

"We'll check on him."Artemis suggested. "It's the least we can do."

"If you insist."Haly responded.

Miss Martian was exiting the room as well and Dick placed a hand on her shoulder.

"You should stay in bed."Dick suggested.

"As a friend of mine once said, "I'll manage."Miss Martian declared.

We gave a wave to Haly before going down to where Ray's compartment was.

The room was dark and we found his bed empty.

"Guess he wasn't that sick."Superboy retorted.

"Does this circus have an elephant that I don't know about?"Roy questioned.

I turned to where Roy was and saw him staring at a large crate of elephant food.

"Not on foreign tours."Dick exclaimed.

Roy opened the crate and found nothing inside it.

"Empty. No, wait."Roy said and placed his hand in the crate causing black stain to appear on his fingers. "Ash."

"From the warehouse fire in Bruges."I complemented.

"Uh...guys?"Artemis asked as she dug underneath Ray's bed and a full face mask. "I found Ray."

"Split up!"Dick ordered. "Search the whole train!"

The six of us immediately split up and I went to search outside the train, but also carefully not to be spotted by anyone else.

Suddenly my comlink started beeping causing me to answer it.

"Darla, Dane, Dean, Diane! Come in!"Dick ordered. "We're chasing someone who's stolen Dawn's act! Her whole shtick, if you catch my drift!"

"I got him!"Superboy admitted. "But he's on to me. Exiting the dining car now! He's gone topside!"

I nodded as I carefully made my way out through a window and climb on the roof just in time to see Superboy confronting the clown guy.

"That won't work on me, clown."Superboy scowled.

"That's no clown."Dick warned as the 'clown' glared at me and my boyfriend over his shoulder. "He's the Parasite! The guy who once stole Superman's powers!"

"As if you kids are who you claim to be."Parasite sneered, still disguised as the Haly's Circus clown. "Please."

Parasite tilted his head back and using the skills he had acquired from M'gann, he morphed his face from the clown makeup into his veiny dark purple skin which made me shudder at the sight.

"Stay out of his reach!"Dick warned as Superboy went to move towards Parasite again. "That's no flu going around! The weakness comes when he makes physical contact and feeds off the powers and abilities of others!"

"I have been a bit of a glutton today."Parasite replied. "Chowed down on the skills of nearly every loser in this troupe. I figured I could use some of your girlfriend's gymnastics skills. Pity, Dan, that you showed up at the train in Bruges when you did. But, then I went to the next best thing and oh my. The pièce de résistance was Dawn Danger or whatever her real name is."

Miss Martian, Red Arrow and Artemis climbed onto the train car just as Parasite was continuing his monologue.

"After moving on from Darla Danger, I thought I'd munch on Dawn's trapeze skills."Parasite explained. "Imagine my surprise when she tasted like Martian Manhunter instead. Mm. She made a lovely appetiser. But guess who I want for my entree!"

Before any of us could react, Parasite used Miss Martian's powers to pull Superboy towards him and touched him.

"Mmm!"Parasite sneered. "Now that's the full-bodied Kryptonian flavor I love!"

"Everyone, stay whelmed!"Dick demanded. "Subdue, but keep your distance!"

Red Arrow and Artemis both drew arrows, but Parasite disintegrated their weapons by shooting twin beams of red light out of his eyes.

"You know, I almost never say this, but I'm sated."Parasite stated and dropped Superboy on the ground. "Hate to eat and run."

Parasite began to get away with the crate and Robin jumped after him, but was flung off easily by Parasite, who then flew away.

Miss Martian grabbed a hold of Robin, who was dangling off the side of the moving train.

Our Martian friend began slipping, but Red Arrow, Artemis and I went over to her and helped her pull him up.

"Conner!"Miss Martian called out. "You all right?"

Miss Martian went over to her boyfriend and helped him up.

"Fine."Superboy assured. "I'm fine."

"You're drained."Robin responded."Parasite took more power than you even have. Heat vision?"

"I have the genetic potential for it."Superboy said. "Must have been enough for him."

Then the six of us all went back inside the train.

After all of us changed into our hero costumes, Robin took out a small item to show it to me and the rest of the Team.

"What is that thing, Robin?"I asked.

"It's not a complete debacle."Robin commented with a smirk. "I picked Parasite's pocket. Got this flash-drive."

Robin handed me over the small blue drive and I connected it in my mini laptop.

In a few seconds, my screen showed a bunch of information.

"Looks like Parasite's working for Intergang."I admitted with a small frown and became a bit shocked. "Everything he's stolen, they're all pieces of something. They're putting together a weapon that...generates black holes!"

"Come on."Red Arrow scoffed. "To build that, you'd need a particle accelerator."

"Like the Large Boson Collider in Geneva?"Robin questioned.

"The circus' next stop."Red Arrow said in realisation. "Now that Parasite can fly, he's got a big head start on us."

"Sorry."Miss Martian apologised in shame.

"What happened wasn't your fault."I said before glancing at Robin. "But, Robin, this weapon could wipe out an entire city. What's our plan?"

"I'll tell you along the way."Robin stated and stood up. "We need to hurry."

"You, Blue Jay and I need to hurry."Red Arrow retorted and picked up his bow. "Without powers, the others would hold us back."

"Hey, you're not the only one with a back-up bow."Artemis reminded and held up her crossbow.

Suddenly there was a loud thud and we all turned around to see Superboy pull his hand out of the dent he'd just put in the train car compartment's wall.

It looks like he got a quick recovery.

"And my powers are back."Superboy responded.

"How?"Robin asked.

"I'm still..."Miss Martian started.

"I guess Kryptonians recover faster than humans or Martians."Superboy exclaimed.

Miss Martian smiled at Red Arrow.

"Don't even think about leaving me behind."Miss Martian remarked.

Geneva

December 24, 00:37 CET

Robin crouched down in front of the fallen security guards outside the building where the Boson collider was housed and notice the doors of the building have been busted open.

It was obvious that Parasite had reached Geneva long before we had.

"Trail of destruction."Robin responded. "This way."

The six of us rushed into the building and headed to where Parasite was.

We arrived to a room where more guards were laying down unconscious and Parasite was typing into a keyboard which activated a big machine.

"Need to take him down."Robin instructed. "Or at least lure him away so we can safely disengage the..."

Suddenly Superboy let out an angry roar, running around the corner and into the room with Parasite before any of us could stop him.

"Seconds?"Parasite asked sarcastically. "No, I couldn't."

Parasite promptly responds by pulling Superboy in telekinetically, but the clone landed a punch in his face at the last moment.

"What's wrong with..."Red Arrow started.

"Wait."Miss Martian instructed. "I got a plan."

The rest of us listened to Miss M's plan while Superboy began to get thrown around the room by Parasite before his powers got absorbed again.

"All right, Dangers, come on out."Parasite taunted. "Only a couple minutes before this baby's done warming up and eats Geneva."

"What do you think?"Miss Martian asked.

"Big risk to take on a theory."Red Arrow admitted.

I frowned at Red Arrow.

"Better having a theory than nothing."I warned in a sharp tone.

"Do it."Robin encouraged. "Go."

Miss Martian walked forward to distract Parasite while Red Arrow and Artemis headed to the top.

Robin and I slipped around the corner into the room and crept along the wall towards the panel as Parasite got distracted by Miss Martian.

"What do you have against Geneva?"Miss Martian questioned.

"Never liked the food."Parasite answered simply before rubbing his hands together. "But the menu keeps improving."

"I'm just the appetizer, remember?"Miss Martian reminded. "Here's the main course."

Parasite yanked Miss Martian forward telekinetically to punch her, but she ducked by landing on her back and used her foot to sweep Parasite's legs out from under him.

Red Arrow released his bow string, sending the arrow flying towards Parasite after he went back on his feet and red gooey foam erupted out of the arrow, encasing Parasite in a shell-like trap that he was none too pleased about.

"Foam?"Parasite scoffed. "You think foam can hold me?"

Parasite's eyes glowed green and Red Arrow was yanked off the balcony he had been hidden on by an invisible force, held high above the floor.

"Or stop me from crushing you with a thought?"Parasite retorted. "Combined Martian and Kryptonian powers here."

Parasite managed to break one arm free out of Red Arrow's hardened foam just as Robin and I skidded to a stop in front of the Boson collider's control panel.

"But do any of those powers free you before I sabotage your death thingy?"Robin asked.

"Death thingy?"I said in disbelief. "Really?"

Robin shrugged at me as his respond.

"This one does."Parasite replied.

Me and Robin dove to the side a split-second before their heads would've been taken off by Parasite's heat vision.

I reached my hand to my belt and took out my frost covered birdarangs before throwing them at Parasite.

Then Artemis jumped down to unleashed an arrow and flammable gas from her arrow ignited, reacting with my frost birdarangs to make the area around Parasite explode.

This caused Red Arrow to be released and land down near where Artemis stood.

"So clever."Parasite mocked smugly. "Trick me into igniting flammable gas. But you forgot doofus' double-dose of invulnerability. Fire can't touch me."

"Unless you make a meal of my powers and get my weaknesses as a side dish."Miss Martian declared.

Parasite's eyes widened as he realized what had happened.

"No!"Parasite shouted angrily. "No!"

Parasite tried to escape, but got knocked out by the flames surrounding him.

"Aw. Poor baby."Miss Martian mocked with a smirk. "Something you ate?"

With Parasite down, Robin walked over to the control panel again and hitting a few more keys, finally succeeding in shutting the Boson collider down and saving Geneva from getting sucked up into the sky.

Robin sighed in relief before I walked over to him and gave him a quick hug as Agent Faraday walked in with a few more Interpol agents.

"We'll take it from here."Agent Faraday suggested.

One of the other agents used a fire extinguisher to douse the remaining flames before Agent Faraday leaned over Parasite's unconscious body and snapping an inhibitor collar around his neck.

"Thanks for the tip, by the way."Agent Faraday said, looking at Robin and me. "Definitely helps to prep the inhibitor collar in advance."

"Glad to be of service."Robin remarked.

I smiled in respond before my attention went over to Artemis, who helped Red Arrow back on his feet.

"Wow."Artemis said sarcastically. "He deigns to touch the hand of a suspected traitor."

"Mind open. I guess I never really saw you three in the thick of it before."Red Arrow explained, glancing at Superboy and Miss Martian for a moment before he turned back to Artemis. "Superboy's a hothead, but I know I'm not one to talk. You could each have betrayed us here. You didn't. I'm sorry I doubted any of you. There is no mole."

Me and Robin shared a smile with our team mates as a wave of relief washed over my mind which made me feel happy that Roy was finally trusting Artemis, Miss Martian and Superboy.

Now what was all left for us to do was to give Haly one more performance before heading back home and give Batman the good news.

Including getting a proper good night sleep before Christmas Day.
