Chapter 23: Usual Suspects

Blue Jay's POV
I wore my dark pink top coat as I stood next to Dick and the rest of the Team while watching Cat Grant's report on television with Icon and Hawkman's sidekicks; Rocket and Draco as our newest team members.
"You are watching live coverage of the Justice League's induction of its five newest members."Cat announced."Looks like the entire League has shown up to welcome the new blood. Everyone from Batman to Captain Marvel."
"I'm glad they didn't kick Billy out."Wally remarked and munched on an apple. "And I love the fact there's a 10 year old on the League."
"There is?"Raquel aka Rocket asked in surprise.
Dick nudged Wally on the stomach while I face palmed in annoyance.
"Ow!"Wally groaned.
"Way to keep a secret, genius."Dick retorted with a glare.
"Hey, she and Draco on the Team now, right?"Wally reminded.
When the camera zoomed in on Dr Fate and Superman, Zatanna looked down sadly and Draco placed a hand on her shoulder in comfort.
"Superman is now handing out official League membership cards starting with Doctor Fate, the Atom, Plastic Man and Icon."Cat stated.
Superman handed Doctor Date, the Atom, Plastic Man and Icon each a League membership card causing me to cross my arms.
"I was the one who convinced Icon to become a hero in the first place."Rocket admitted with a frown. "I should be celebrating with him. Not hidden away in here."
"Welcome to our world."Kaldur responded.
Raquel smiled at Kaldur.
"Well, I suppose there's an upside too."Raquel added.
I smirked a bit at Raquel before looking back at the TV just in time to see Green Arrow hand Red Arrow a membership card before they shook hands with each other.
"Finally, Green Arrow welcomes his former protégé, Speedy now known as Red Arrow, to this roster of heroes."Cat announced.
"Way to go, Roy!"Wally cheered.
"At last, he has his wish."Kaldur commented.
"The first of us to make it."Dick remarked.
"Now no one will call him a sidekick anymore."I stated with a smile.
"Lucky him."Samuel aka Draco muttered.
"Wait."Raquel spoke up. "Since when is being a sidekick a bad thing? You sidekicks were my inspiration."
"Well, see, six months ago..."Dick started.
Just before Dick could finish his lesson, a beeping sound was heard causing me to look at my watch.
A smirk grew on my face after seeing the information on my watch and I looked at my teammates.
"Any of you interested in visiting the Smokey Mountains?"I asked with a hint of amusement.
"Something came up?"Samuel asked.
"You can say that."I answered.
Smokey Mountains
December 30, 10:48 EST
I typed in my mini laptop as Miss Martian brought the Bio-Ship to the Smokey Mountains.
The signal I got turned out to be a warning that Cheshire was reported boarding a plane in Asheville while carrying a briefcase.
"Are you sure it's her?"Artemis asked nervously. "I mean are you absolutely positive?"
"The facial recognition confirms that's Jade Nguyen."I responded. "This is her being spotted by the security footage from the Asheville Regional Airport.
Robin threw up pictures of what we received an hour ago to Artemis and the others.
"But you've seen her without her mask."Robin said. "What do you think?"
"It's Jade."Artemis admitted with a disappointed tone. "Cheshire."
"Agreed, but focus on what she carries."Aqualad instructed.
I sent an image of Cheshire's briefcase which contained the modified echinoderm on the ship's screen for the others to see.
"Is that the case you saw in New Orleans?"Aqualad asked. "The one that got away?"
"Yes."Aqualad responded.
"Okay, I'm guessing from the mug shot that this Cheshire's the bad guy."Rocket complemented. "But what's so important about that case?"
Robin showed an image of the Injustice League from his wrist computer.
"Remember the Injustice League?"Robin asked.
"And their giant evil plants?"Rocket added. "Uh, yeah."
"The Team and the League put them in prison."Aqualad explained. "But their allies still scheme and whatever is in that containment case seems important to their plans."
"We had a chance to grab it in New Orleans, but someone screwed up."Kid Flash retorted.
I frowned at Kid Flash as Artemis glared at the speedster before Miss Martian spoke up.
"Approaching Cheshire's jet."Miss Martian declared.
All of us became shocked when we saw the ruins of Cheshire's jet laying on the snow covered ground.
"Looks like there were no survivors."Miss Martian stated.
All of us headed out of the Bio-Ship to investigate the damaged plane, but we didn't find anything inside it.
"How come Homeland Security and the N.T.S.B. aren't all over this?"Kid Flash questioned.
"Cheshire's ID was a League alert."Robin replied. "Authorities didn't pick it up, and her jet didn't follow its flight plan. Flew under the radar, literally. The Watchtower auto-tracked the jet and recorded the crash."
"Then why isn't the League here?"Rocket questioned.
Zatanna smiled at me and Robin.
"Because our Boy and Girl Wonder have hacking skills and arranged to get the alert first."Zatanna admitted with a smile.
"And because Cheshire and that case represent our unfinished business."Aqualad added.
Superboy threw a piece of the plane's broken wing away before looking at us.
"Where are the bodies?"Superboy asked.
"Here's one."Cheshire's voice sneered. "And it is stunning."
We all looked up to see Cheshire with Riddler, Shimmer, Mammoth and a group of mercenaries with Apokoliptan weaponry accompanying her.
"I am flora, not fauna."Ridder exclaimed. "I am foliage, not trees. What am I?"
Riddler snapped his fingers causing spikes to come from the ground and activated a light green energy barrier that surrounded us in it.
"Come on, you can get this."Riddler insisted with an evil smile. "I am shrubbery, not grass. What am I?"
"Ambush."Robin and I added sourly.
"Didn't you think we'd be tipped you were on Cheshire's trail?"Ridder asked. "We're tired of your interference, kiddies. This is the end game. Ordered from above and executed by their master strategist, moi."
"Miss Martian, is everyone linked?"Aqualad asked.
"Yes."Miss Martian responded.
"Go!"Aqualad ordered.
As soon as we heard Aqualad's order, the ten of us sprang into action.
"Ekahs siht ebolgwons!"Zatanna chanted.
Thensnow began to pelt around making it difficult to see, but it didn't bother me.
I leapt up and punched a mercenary in the face before I threw one that launched towards me with my whip and sending him crushing against a nearby rock.
Robin kicked a mercenary away before he and I stood back to back with each other.
"I took out four."Robin stated. "What about you?"
"Six."I responded with a smirk.
Robin smirked. "Let's make this more even."
Robin throw out his batarangs to hit two approaching mercenaries on their heads before I whacked them down with my whip.
Me and Robin headed to the top of a mountain just in time to see Superboy flying while holding Mammoth tightly by the hair.
"SB, you're flying!"Robin shouted in shock.
My eyes stared at Superboy in disbelief.
How is that possible?
The clone threw Mammoth upwards, making the creature hit the top of the barrier before falling back down.
"Blue Jay!"Artemis' voice shouted. "Move out of the way!"
The cliffside broke apart by Superboy's attack and headed towards where I stood, but Draco arrived and brought me away in time.
"Thanks."I thanked.
"Don't mention it."Draco answered before he flew down to help Rocket and Aqualad.
I brought my attention to where Shimmer and Riddler stood causing me to take out my smoke bombs to cover their sight.
Robin knocked out Shimmer with a punch while Zatanna captured Riddler with one of her spells.
"No! No!"Riddler panicked. "I am not the straitjacket type! I'm strictly Belle Reve! Not Arkham!"
Riddler dropped on the ground and Zatanna shut his mouth up with a white tie.
Draco took out his sword to blast the spike machines in the area causinng the force field to go down.
Once the force field was down, Zatanna dropped the storm causing me and the rest of the Team takes their captives into custody.
Mount Justice
December 30, 15:45 EST
I felt a bit of sweat rolled down my face as me and the Team stood before Batman, Black Canary and Icon.
"Tell me if this sounds familiar."Batman said as he stared at me and the others. "You hacked League systems, disobeyed protocol and endangered your lives...and your initiative resulted in the capture of three escaped felons proving Warden Strange runs Belle Reve as a cover for criminal activity."
A sudden smile spread on Batman's face.
"Well done."Batman admitted.
I stared at my dad with a stunned look before looking at the others.
"And then there's this."Batman added, gesturing to the suitcase that Cheshire left behind during the fight. "Bio-technology integrated with some form of nano-circuitry."
"Though I am unfamiliar with the species, the bio-component is clearly not of Earth."Icon exclaimed as he picked up one of the mysterious biotechnology.
"We'll take it to the Watchtower for further study."Batman stated.
I rushed over to Batman as he picked up the suitcase.
"So we're not grounded?"I asked with a hopeful smile.
"Don't push it."Batman warned.
I smiled triumphantly as Batman and Red Tornado left the cave.
"Congratulations on the League thing."Rocket congratulated as she spoke with Icon. "Sorry, I skipped out."
"Yes, well, we both seem to have found teams that suit us."Icon answered.
Rocket smiled as Black Canary placed her hand on Icon's shoulder.
"We should go too."Black Canary suggested. "Don't wanna miss the League's induction party."
"Black Canary, 1-3."the computer's voice announced. "Icon, 2-0."
As soon as Black Canary and Icon, Robin glanced at me.
"You realise we were set up, right?"Robin questioned.
"I know. At least, Batman didn't ground us this time."I commented with a hint of relief and then frowned. "But I hate to think what the whole setted up thing means."
"Agreed."Aqualad answered firmly. "Cheshire and Riddler were tipped and ready for us."
"Not the mole thing again."Artemis retorted and placed a hand over her face in exasperation.
"Mole thing?"Rocket asked.
"What do you mean by again?"Draco questioned.
Kid Flash looked at our new companions.
"We had intel that there was a traitor on the Team."Kid Flash explained.
"Namely Artemis, M'gann or me."Superboy commented as he stepped forward.
"It is more complicated than that."Aqualad admitted. "But your recent behaviour does concern me. Your attack on Mammoth nearly got Artemis and Blue Jay killed."
Superboy began walking away from us, but suddenly winced and touched his forehead.
"Superboy?"Aqualad asked.
Superboy stood up and then glanced at all of us with a calm expression.
"There's something I need to do, something I need to tell you."Superboy admitted. "Last month, on Thanksgiving, I went back to Cadmus, found a few things out. When I was cloned, only half the DNA was Superman's. The other half was human. That's why I don't have, will never have, full Kryptonian powers."
"You sure?"Robin asked with a smile. "Because you sure seemed to have them today."
"I've been using these."Superboy stated and showed a Shield patch on his wrist. "They suppress my human DNA. I get the flight, the heat-vision, but I think I also get angry. Well, angrier. I'm sorry."
"Where did you get those?"Aqualad asked.
"From my human father, Lex Luthor."Superboy answered.
This caused all of us to become shocked.
"Lex Luthor is your dad?"I asked with a stunned look.
"He's summoned me to Santa Prisca."Superboy stated.
Artemis let out a groan and we all turned to look at her.
"Listen."Artemis spoke up. "Superboy's not the only one suffering from bad DNA."
Artemis and activated the computer, loading up files of Sportsmaster, Huntress and Cheshire.
"My mother is Huntress, an ex-con."Artemis explained. "The rest of my family aren't even ex. My dad's Sportsmaster and he's sending my sister, Cheshire to fly me to Santa Prisca too."
"That's why..."Kid Flash started.
"Yeah."Artemis finished with a frown. "I was so desperate to make sure none of you found out."
"I knew."Robin declared as he placed me closer to him. "And so did, Jay."
Artemis looked at me and Robin with a shocked look.
"Hey, we're detectives."Robin remarked. "But it never mattered. You aren't your family. You're one of us."
"And so are you, Conner."I responded with a smile. "Your a friend. No matter if part of your DNA is bad."
Superboy smiled at me as Kid Flash walked over to Artemis.
"So?"Kid Flash asked smulgy, resting his arm on Artemis's shoulder. "Who's next?"
"I am."Miss Martian answered quietly.
"I swear I was kidding."Kid Flash assured with a nervous look.
"Queen Bee's been blackmailing me."Miss Martian admitted. "She wants me in Santa Prisca too."
"Blackmailing?"Aqualad asked. "How?"
"She knows my true Martian form."Miss Martian declared.
I raised my eyebrow as Robin smirked at Miss Martian.
"Bald M'gann?"Robin sneered. "Who cares if-"
"No."Miss Martian responded.
Just before I could say anything, Miss Martian sighed and changed into a monstrous looking white alien.
I stared at Miss Martian in utter shock, not knowing what to say.
"I realised you would never accept me if you saw what I really am."Miss Martian commented as she held her arms.
"M'gann, did we truly seem so shallow?"Aqualad questioned.
"I couldn't take a chance."Miss Martian admitted sadly. "Being a white Martian among the green on Mars, I endured constant rejection. I couldn't face that from..."
"From me."Superboy finished.
Superboy walked forward to hold Miss Martian's hand to have a psychic conversion with her as I stared at my Martian friend with a sad expression.
It is really sad to know M'gann was rejected just because of her looks and needed to wear another appearance in order to fit in with others.
I looked at my teammates.
"So...this ends our mole suspicion?"I asked hopefully.
"It looks that way, Jay."Robin answered.
Santa Prisca
December 30, 18:09 ECT
Miss Martian telekinetically slammed Queen Bee against a tree, rendering her unconscious.
Blockbuster attacked Superbo and Bane has his men open fire, but Sphere opened fire on them.
Sportsmaster and Cheshire advance on Artemis causing her to call out to the rest of us.
"Guys, reinforcement time!"Artemis warned out.
Kid Flash rushed forward to take out a few of Bane's men before Robin and I launched ourselves to take out the rest with Zatanna's help.
Suddenly Bane came hurling towards both Robin and me, but luckily I didn't get any cuts on my skin since Batman improved my fighting suit.
"Etaerc Nibor dna Kcalb Noclaf snoisulli!"Zatanna chanted.
I grinned in amazement when I saw multiple clones of Robin and me appear from smoke.
"Gotta love an army of me!"the Robin clones declared smugly.
"More like an army of handsome."I thought in a purring tone.
Me and Robin followed by our clones all rushed towards Bane.
When the illusions vanished, I did an acrobatic flip and took out my whip to whack Bane's neck hardly causing his venom link to break off.
Robin shot a wire towards Bane's head before electricity flowed through and the large man collapsed on the floor.
Then Draco flew down and offered his hand out to Zatanna to help her up.
"You okay, beautiful?"Draco asked with a smirk.
"Yeah."Zatanna replied with a smile and took Draco's hand. "Thanks."
I covered my hand to giggle quietly when I saw Zatanna's cheeks turn a bit pink, knowing she developed a crush on Draco.
Draco is sort of a handsome guy, but I already have my special guy.
Then we all regrouped with the others, feeling proud that we had won a decisive victory.
"It is always like this."Rocket remarked. "Told you."
"Hey, disaster averted."Robin chuckled and threw an arm over me. "Feeling the aster."
"Agreed, this has been a good day."Aqualad stated with an approved smile.
Ooh, next is the last episode of the first season.
