Chapter 24: Auld Acquaintance

Mount Justice

December 31, 07:16 EST

Blue Jay's POV

Me and the Team headed to the mission room after getting a call from Batman and Red Tornado.

"We have reason to feel proud of yesterday's victories."Aqualad commented. "But one thing has not changed."

"Somehow, the bad guys are still getting intel about us."Robin said.

"Yeah, but at least we know none of us are the mole."Kid Flash responded.

"That's correct."Batman said and showed a holographic image of Red Arrow appeared. "The mole was Red Arrow."

My eyes widen at Batman's respond.

"Roy?"I said in disbelief.

"No way."Kid Flash denied.

"Batman, that cannot be."Aqualad responded. "He was Green Arrow's protege. We have all known him for years."

"Unfortunately the Roy Harper we have known for the last three year is another Project Cadmus clone."Red Tornado admitted.

Then an image of the new Cadmus building appeared, giving us its stats before an image of the original Speedy appeared next to Red Arrow's.

"We've learned the real Speedy was abducted and replaced immediately after becoming Green Arrow's sidekick."Batman declared. "The clone was pre-programmed with a drive to join the Justice League. Which is why he was so angry over any delays to his admission and why he refused to join the Team. This Roy Harper had no idea he was a clone or a traitor. And his subconscious programming drove him to become League-worthy. So he struck out on his own as Red Arrow. When he was finally admitted, his secondary programming kicked in and he attempted to betray the League to Vandal Savage. Fortunately, I had already deduced Red Arrow was a clone. We were prepared."

"Savage was subdued but Red Arrow escaped."Red Arrow stated. "He is now a fugitive, armed and dangerous."

"If you guys hadn't rescued me from Cadmus..."Superboy started as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"What happened to the real Roy?"Robin asked.

"We don't know. He isn't at Cadmus."Batman answered. "We have to face the possibility that the real Roy Harper is dead."

I felt my heart break a little at the Dark Knight's words as I looked at the ground.

Roy dead?

No.

He couldn't be...he just couldn't.

I felt Robin give my hand a gentle squeeze causing me to return the favour.

"The clone Roy."Aqualad responded. "The Team will find him."

"Negative. Red Arrow's a member of the Justice League now."Batman responded."Leave him to us."

Batman placed a hand over his ear, where his comm link was.

"I'm needed on the Watchtower."Batman said and looked at Red Tornado. "Tornado, stay with the kids."

I narrowed my eyes at the last word Batman said.

Dad never called us kids.

Only Bruce does.

And it wasn't like him to say it when he is the Dark Knight.

"Recognized: Batman: 02."the computer's voice announced.

When Batman left the room, Aqualad talked to us through telepathically.

"Clone or no clone, Red Arrow was one of us."Aqualad replied. "We will go after him."

Red Tornado approached Aqualad from behind, but then suddenly shut down.

"Tornado!"Miss Martian said.

"What happened?"Superboy asked.

"He's powered down."Kid Flash answered.

Robin let go of my hand and activated his wrist computer while I checked in my mini laptop.

"All functions off-line."Robin answered and looked at me. "What about you, Jay?"

"I've got the same thing."I replied as I typed on my mini laptop. "He's totally powered down."

"Guys, I'm sensing a low-level mystic force at play."Zatanna admitted. "I don't know if it caused his shutdown, but now that I think about it, I was getting the same buzz off Batman."

"Batman, he..."I started.

"Yeah."Robin agreed. "He called us kids. He never does that."

Kid Flash picked up a bio-tech chip which was in Red Tornado's hands.

"Look."Kid Flash instructed. "One of those bio-tech chips we confiscated off Cheshire."

"Something is not right."Aqualad said. "Robin, Blue Jay, Kid, Zatanna, Rocket, see if you can get Tornado back online. The rest with me to find Roy...Red Arrow."

Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, Artemis and Draco left and the rest of us turned to look at Red Tornado.

"The problem's hardware, not software."Robin commented. "But where do we start?"

I looked up at the ceiling, which was where Red Tornado's room was.

"I have an idea."I responded.

With Zatanna and Rocket's help, we brought Red Tornado's human body down and placed it on a bed which was the opposite side where the original Red Tornado laid.

Then Robin and I hooked them up and Robin began the download.

"Download in progress."Robin stated.

"So Tornado built this android to party?"Rocket asked.

"Not how he'd put it, but, yeah, more or less."Zatanna answered with a sheepish smile.

"Recognised: Black Canary, 13."the computer's voice announced.

All of us turned to one of the Zeta-Tubes and watched Black Canary walking towards us.

"Hey, guys."Black Canary greeted. "Wanted to check in, see how you're handling the...What are you doing to Red?"

"It's not how it looks!"Kid Flash protested.

"It looks like you're downloading his consciousness into a new body."Black Canary scowled.

"Okay, it's pretty much exactly how it looks."Kid Flash said. "But..."

"Team!"Red Tornado's human self shouted. "Get out of the cave! Now!"

Black Canary let out a Canary Cry causing me to duck behind one of the cement tables with Robin.

Kid Flash got hit by Red's top body and Rocket and Zatanna with Red's lower half.

Me and Robin rushed forward to attack Black Canary, but she kicked Robin away and threw me on him.

Black Canary was going to let out another Canary Cry, but me and Robin quickly threw out our knock out gas bombs that exploded on her.

Then Rocket surrounded Black Canary in a bubble and the blonde haired woman coughed a bit before falling unconscious.

"Black Canary attacked us?"Zatanna questioned.

"Black Canary is the least of our problems."Red Tornado's Human Self replied. "We must abandon the cave."

"Recognised: Icon: 20."the computer's voice announced. "Doctor Fate: 17. Captain Marvel, 15."

All of us headed to the hangar and boarded the Super-Cycle with Sphere and Wolf before heading out of the Cave and get spotted by the brain washed heroes.

We tied Black Canary to take her with us as well, but luckily she was still unconscious.

"Stay off your radios."Red Tornado's Human Self instructed. "Let the super-cycle track Superboy. Instruct her to mask all signals. We cannot allow the League to track us."

"Right."I answered and began typing on my mini laptop.

I carefully made sure to deactivate most electronic devices and activating all stealth technology, so that the League won't be able to find us.

"Of course. Just one question."Kid Flash said and began to panic. "Why is the Justice League after us?!"

As we flew to find the others, Red Tornado informed us of everything that has happened.

"The entire League is under the complete mental domination of Vandal Savage."Red Tornado's Human Self exclaimed. "Red Arrow seems to have been his means. His method was something Savage referred to as Starro-tech. An alien bio-organism infused with nanotechnology and magic. It shuts down the mind's autonomy allowing Savage to reprogram the individual to suit his needs. Even my inorganic brain was not immune. But the process requires 0.16 nano seconds to integrate with its host's nervous system. That delay allowed me to create an internal subprogram which would disconnect my power cells if I attempted to infect another person. Fortunately, the Starro-tech is body-specific. As John Smith, I am now free of outside control."

I frowned at Red Tornado's explanation on the bio-tech chips.

Truly, these things are completely creepy and despicable.

"This Starro-tech it worked on super-powered humans, four flavours of alien, an android even Doctor Fate?"Robin asked. "Defeating all of you without a fight?"

"Indeed."Red Tornado's Human Self commented. "A remarkable achievement. One not easily countered."

I notice a blinking dot appearing on my mini laptop causing me to look up.

"Looks like we found them."I said and contacted Miss Martian in my head. "Miss Martian, are you in range?"

"Here, Blue Jay."Miss Martian replied. "Linking both squads and de-camouflaging."

The Super-Cycle arrived inside the Bio-Ship before the entrance of the alien ship closed.

"Great."Robin complemented. "Because we really need to compare notes."

The Watchtower

December 31, 23:16 EST

Red Tornado, Black Canary and Red Arrow got captured by Savage and Klarion before all of them got infected by Starro-tech once more.

However, Red Tornado was able to shut down the Watchtower security systems when he came aboard while me and the Team had infiltrated the satellite.

I got to admit having Roy, Dinah and Red Tornado distract the two villains was a risky but good idea that I have planned so that the rest of us can head into the Watchtower unnoticed.

"RT did it."Robin declared as we checked his wrist computer. "Wirelessly bypassed security for us as soon as he arrived. Savage shouldn't know we're here."

"Move out."Aqualad ordered.

Using cure-tech, we were able to take out Plastic Man, Atom, Captain Atom and Hawkman with ease.

Mister Terrific was giving me a hard time to grab him, but I was able to catch him off guard and plant cure-tech on his neck with Draco helping me out.

Then all of us split to find the rest of the Justice League.

Me and Robin walked together with Wolf at our side.

Suddenly I felt the ground shake a bit causing me to quickly warn the others.

"Guys."I spoke up. "Klarion has just sent Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, John Stewart, Hawkwoman and Martian Manhunter to fight RT, Black Canary and Red Arrow."

"Pretty bird, we are already aware of that!"Kid Flash admitted. "If you guys aren't busy...me and Artemis are already dealing Green Arrow, Aquaman and Flash over here!"

"We're on our way!"Aqualad responded.

Me and Robin quickly moved out of the way from being hit by Hawkwoman's mace and Wolf quickly pinned her on the ground.

I quickly ran forward and shoved a cure-tech onto her neck as she laid unconscious on the floor.

Wonder Woman appeared and prepared to grab us with her rope, but Rocket arrived and quickly protected us in her force bubble.

"Now!"Robin ordered.

Then Rocket trapped the Amazon warrior princess in a force bubble causing her to angrily start punching it.

"Can she escape your force bubble?"I asked.

"Not if she keeps punching it."Rocket declared. "The kinetic energy only makes it stronger. But I'm stuck here. Anything I do risks freeing her."

Robin rushed over to place a cure-tech on John's neck, who was pinned by Sphere.

"Look out!"Robin warned.

I quickly jumped out of the way as Batman headed down to punch me.

Rocket kept Wonder Woman busy while me and my boyfriend stood face to face with the Dark Knight.

Batman didn't say anything and simply cracked his knuckles causing me to narrow my eyes at him.

Oh. This was on.

Robin flew on the offensive first to toss three smoke pellets first before I threw two of my birdarangs at Batman.

In the smoke, Batman easily dodged our attacks and gave Robin a right hook to the jaw.

I rushed forward and started fighting Batman in hand to hand combat.

I carefully evaded Batman's attacks and back flipped myself onto higher ground.

However, Batman was able to land a devastating kick to my torso causing me to grit my teeth in pain and I nearly threw up.

Ugh! I shouldn't have eaten porridge with berries for breakfast today!

When I painfully skidded fifteen feet away, Robin took the opportunity to break out his escrima sticks and to fight back against the Dark Knight.

Robin tried to use his escrima sticks to hit Batman and launch a kick, but the caped crusader easily dodged his attacks.

I quickly rushed forward to launch a punch on Batman, but he caught my leg and threw me towards Robin, making the two of us go down into the Superboy shaped hole in the concrete flooring.

"We're not gonna beat them like this."Robin responded.

"Plan B, then."Superboy insisted.

Me, Robin and Superboy looked up to see Batman and Superman coming down to confront us.

"Throw us!"I demanded.

Superboy grabbed the arms of me and Robin before throwing us straight at Batman and crushing him against the wall.

I took out a cure-tech and planted it on Batman's neck before he landed on the floor unconsciously.

"Sorry, dad."I apologised. "But I had to do what was necessary."

Superboy caught Superman, but the Man of Steel slammed the clone against the wall to crush him.

"Sure about this?"Robin asked.

"Do it!"Superboy ordered.

Robin opened the box containing the shining green mineral and waited for the Kryptonians to weaken enough so that he could slip in close to them and place the cure on the Man of Steel's neck.

Both Kryptonians grunted and their faces contorted in matching agony as they both slid helplessly down onto the floor.

Robin slammed the box shut within seconds as I crouched down next to the Man of Steel and placed the cure on his neck.

"Ugh."Superboy groaned in exhaustion. "Kryptonite hurts."

"Which is why Batman keeps it in an overwhelmingly impenetrable vault at the Batcave."Robin replied and helped Superboy up. "Well, more like a whelmingly penetrable vault."

"That we miraculously was able to hack into its system."I admitted as I slowly rubbed my torso to ease the pain I felt on it. "And I'm gonna need a hot water bottle when we get home."

"And that is why I always tell you to have a light breakfast."Robin sneered.

I rolled my eyes at Robin.

"Thanks, Boy Wonder."I answered sarcastically.

Me, Robin and Superboy joined up with the others, just in time for us to see Klarion teleport himself and Savage out of the Watchtower as we rushed up to them.

The ten of us saw Red Tornado without his arms and legs, but he wasn't deactivated.

"Congratulations, Team."Red Tornado congratulated. "You have won the day."

Suddenly the computer popped up a view screen with the words 'January 1, 00:00 EST' on it.

"Happy New Year, Justice League."the computer announced.

Strains of 'Auld lang syne' began to play as Kid Flash takes Artemis in a bridal carry.

"I should've done this a long time ago."Kid Flash admitted.

"No kidding."Artemis chuckled.

Kid Flash and Artemis kiss each other for the first time causing me to blink at what was happening now.

Then Superboy and Miss Martian follow suit passionately before Zatanna kisses Draco causing the guy to become love struck and kiss her back.

I let out a soft squeal when Robin grabbed me by the waist and I wrapped my hands around his neck before our lips connected with each other.

Rocket glanced at Aqualad.

"Liking this Team more every day."Rocket remarked.

Rocket gives Aqualad a peck on the cheek.

"Human customs still elude me."Red Tornado declared.

After everyone has recovered, me and Robin stood together looking at Earth through the viewports.

"Hey Dick."I spoke up.

"Hm?"Robin responded.

"Do you love me?"I asked.

"Of course I do, Emi."Robin answered with a warm smile. "I love you more than anything in this world."

"And I love you as well, bird boy."I chuckled in an amused tone.

Robin and I share a kiss, only to hear someone clear his throat.

The two of us turned around to see Batman looking at us.

"B-B-Batman!"I panicked in fear. "I...you see..."

A surprised smile grew on Batman's face.

"It's about time you two would tell me."Batman commented.

My face turned bright red while Robin rubbed the back of his neck with a nervous chuckle.

It looks like Batman knew that me and Dick would become a couple before any of us knew.

Then the three of us sat down with Red Arrow along with key members of the Team and the League.

"Everything I thought I knew about myself was a lie."Red Arrow responded sadly. "I'm not a hero or a sidekick. I'm a traitor, a pawn."

Black Canary placed her hand on Red Arrow's.

"Roy, it'll be all..."Black Canary started.

"I'm not Roy."Red Arrow declared. "I don't know what I am. All I know is I need to find the real Roy. I need to rescue Speedy."

"Guardian is already searching Cadmus."Batman assured.

Green Arrow and Black Canary walked away with Red Arrow.

"Something else is wrong."Aqualad declared.

We exchanged glances with our mentor as Robin pulled up six images for us to see.

"The entire League was under Savage's spell for just over a day."Robin explained. "We've accounted for most of that time. But these six went missing for a full 16 hours we can't account for."

"Sixteen hours."Batman replied. "What did we do?"

I looked down and narrowed my eyes as I recalled the events that happened last year.

But what peaked my concern more was the person, who called me when me and the Team were trying to figure out why all the adults in the world went missing.

Just who exactly was that caller?

Meanwhile...

The members of the Light had raided Cadmus, subdued Guardian and the staff to cart Match out of the facility.

Ra's Al Ghul looked at Queen Bee, Brain, Ocean Master and Lex Luthor.

"The League will arrive shortly."Ra's warned. "Leave nothing behind we might need."

Monsieur Mallah moved the pod that contained Match inside it.

"Match, of course."Ra's declared.

A figure walked past the Demon's Head and walked toward the pod that held the original Roy Harper inside it.

The figure was a thirteen year old boy with messy dark brown hair wearing a white mask that's in a shape of a bat with black rimming. He wore a grey shirt that goes up near his neck with a black cloak, bright red gloves, black denim pants and black boots.

Ra's followed Shade's gaze and smirked evilly at the hero who was replaced by a clone.

"But I believe this might still prove useful as well."Ra's stated.

And here ends Season 1!

But a new chapter will start for Blue Jay and the rest of the heroes as she tries to be a normal girl and being a good girlfriend to Richard Grayson AKA Robin:)
