Chapter 25: Things Change

Gotham City

June 9th, 10:35 EDT

Emma's POV

I sat with Alfred, Selina and Barbara as the Principal call out for the next student, who will become an honoree for the school this year.

Bette was out of town with Yosuke to visit her Aunt Kathy for a while and would be back next week.

"And the Gotham Academy High School Mathlete goes to Richard Grayson!"the Principal announced.

I watched Dick walked forward on the stage as the Principal handed the Mathlete honoree to him as everyone in the audience cheered and clapped at him.

"You must be so proud of Dick."Selina said.

"He's like a grandson to me, Miss Kyle."Alfred admitted.

As everyone cheered at Dick, I glanced at each side of the assembly room.

Thirty minutes has passed and Bruce still hasn't showed up.

Barbara looked at Alfred with a concern look.

"He'll be crushed that Bruce missed this."Barbara stated. "Where could he be?"

"Perhaps he had car trouble."Alfred suggested.

I let out a sad sigh, knowing my dad won't make it in time and has missed yet another important day for Dick.

Last time was the football match that Dick and Yosuke took part to beat a rivalry team from another high school.

Dick wasn't happy when he learned about Bruce missing it and I know this time his mood is going to become more sour once he realised this.

After the assembly was over, Alfred and Selina dropped us off in a restaurant to celebrate Dick's success.

Me, Dick and Barbara all raised cups of fizzy cider in toast before we drank our beverages together.

"So Dick, how does it feel to be number one in Maths?"Barbara asked.

"Great, Barb."Dick answered and looked at me. "So Emi, are you gonna admit I'm genius?"

"You, Dick Grayson are a dork."I chuckled.

"Yeah."Dick admitted simply with a smug smirk. "But, I'm your dork."

Suddenly my phone started ringing causing me to stand up from the table.

"Uh...excuse me."I responded. "I have to take this."

I backed away a little bit until I was near where a bunch of sofa seats were.

"Hello?"I responded.

"Blue Jay, I've got a lead on a heist tonight at Goth Space."Batman declared. "You and Robin meet me there."

"Really?"I questioned in disbelief. "This isn't a great time."

"I'm not making the schedule."Batman answered.

I bit my lip and let out a sigh.

"Right."I answered sadly.

I went back to where I was before and gave Barbara an apologetic smile.

"Barbara, I'm very sorry."I apologised. "But Dick and I have to go."

"Go?"Barbara said in surprise. "But we just got here. Is there something wrong?"

"You see...Alfred need our help with cleaning the chimney!"I declared quickly. "And he is struggling to get a crow nest out from it!"

Dick frowned knowing what I actually meant and stood up from his seat.

"We'll catch up again later."Dick assured with a small smile.

Dick and I walked away from Barbara and then ran to separate empty rooms to change into our hero costumes.

Once we were ready, I took out my electric scooter and Dick grabbed onto my waist before we rode off to Batman's location in the road.

To be more clear, me and the Boy Wonder have recently spent more time with helping Batman fight crime in Gotham and very little time with the Team back in Mount Justice.

When fifteen minutes passed, we arrived where Batman was and saw our mentor watching a warehouse.

"You are both late."Batman declared.

"Excuse us for having a life."Robin retorted.

I fell silent at Robin's sudden words before I looked at Batman, who checked the warehouse with his binoculars.

"Another latest scheme to foil by the Joker?"I guessed.

"Exactly."Batman responded.

The next thing that happened we jumped from the roof window to stop the mad clown and his goons.

"Nice entrance."Joker remarked. "Either you've never heard of a door or you just like pulling glass out of your shorts."

Joker moved away as his men started firing their guns at us.

Batman, Robin and I quickly ducked behind a few machines to avoid the bullets being fired at us.

The Dark Knight throw his batarang at the strings that held an old skylab on top of the roof.

The skylab was cut loose and two of Joker's men got trapped in it.

I took the opportunity to rush forward and kick away the other goons on the face as Robin confronted the Joker.

"You blew it, Joker."Robin stated.

"Au contraire, Bird Boy, I'm just getting fired up!"Joker declared with a smirk.

Joker pulled a nearby lever and a big rocket missile flew forward and the three of us ducked before it could hit us.

The bing rocket missile blew up the wall as Joker escaped in an ice cream van with his goons.

Me and Robin notice Batman was trapped in the rubble from the rocket missile causing us to ran forward to check if he was okay.

"Batman!"I shouted.

"Don't worry, I'll catch up."Batman assured. "You two go after them."

Robin and I ran out of the warehouse and saw Joker's fourth henchman was left behind and started to make his own escape.

"Come on, Jay!"I insisted. "I see one of them escaping!"

We followed the henchman named Connor to where he was going, only for the two of us to encounter the man when he returned home to his family.

"I'll save you, Daddy."Connor's son declared while wearing a space helmet.

Connor stood in front of his wife and son to defend them from us.

I froze a little seeing the small boy as Robin began to make his toward Connor.

"Robin, wait."I instructed taking Robin's arm and calmly walked up to the frightened man. "Look, sir, just come quietly for us to talk. We will go easy on you and your family will be safe, okay?

"Stay back!"Connor demanded.

I watched the sight quietly, knowing Connor didn't want anything to go down in front of his family.

But before Robin can act and I tried to help out, Batman crashed through a side window and pinned Connor against a wall.

"Where's the Joker?"Batman demanded.

"I...I don't know..."Connor answered.

Batman hits Connor against the wall.

"Remember now?"Batman questioned.

This caused Connor's wife and son to be shocked seeing this.

"Dear!"

"Daddy!"

The little boy tried to rush over to his father, but his mother quickly held him in her arms.

"Batman, calm down!"I protested as I stepped in. "Let me do the talking! This man was in the wrong job that's all!"

"Batman, not like this."Robin whispered. "Not in front of his family."

Batman ignored us and continued glaring at Connor.

"The sooner he talks, the sooner we leave."Batman declared.

Robin and I glanced at the little boy and saw tears coming down his eyes.

Poor boy.

"I'm out of here now."Robin scowled in annoyance.

Robin couldn't deal with this anymore to see the little boy crying and went out from the crashed window that Batman came through.

Seeing this, I angrily glared Batman and before following my boyfriend out of the apartment.

Wayne Manor

June 9th, 23:05 EDT

I quietly arrived to Dick's room in the middle of the night and found my boyfriend complaining about the situation that happened today.

"I've had it, Emma."Dick responded. "I can't do this anymore."

"Do what?"I answered.

"I've got to get away."Dick admitted. "Away from him."

"Away from Bruce?"I said in disbelief. "Dick, what do you mean? Please, tell me."

I lead Dick to his bed and we sat down together.

"All those years ago at Haley's Circus, we watched my family fall to their deaths from a sabotaged trapeze rig murdered by a guy named Tony Zucco, who was trying to extort money."Dick stated. "Bruce took me in and after a few months later you let me in on all his secrets. I was excited just like you when he gave us both a costume. We became Robin and Blue Jay; Batman's sidekicks. There we were the Boy and Girl Wonder tearing through Gotham City with the great Batman himself."

Dick narrowed his eyes as he glared at the ground.

"But where was Dick Grayson? No where to be seen."Dick admitted. "But there was no time for anything else. No football games, no dances, no proms and not enough dates. Just Robin the Boy Wonder. Batman's faithful shadow."

I fell silent at Dick's words before I gently touched his face and looked at him in the eyes.

"I do understand, Dick."I assured with a smile. "Yes, Batman's controlling and ruthless behaviour can be too much sometimes. But he still does care for us."

Dick and I looked at each other for a moment before we kissed each other gently on the lips.

"I love you."Dick declared.

"I love you too, Mr Grayson."I answered with a small smirk.

Gotham City

June 10th, 15:45 EDT

The following morning, Dick and I left Wayne Manor to spend some time together in the park.

Both of us were getting calls from Batman, but none of us answer to him since we needed to spend more time alone.

However, when we went back inside the manor, we were surprised to find Barbara's backpack in the living room.

"Okay. This is weird."I complemented. "Barbara's bag is here but she's no where to be seen."

Me and Dick headed quickly to the Batcave and found Alfred checking the bat computer.

"Alfred, we found Barbara's backpack in the living room."Dick said. "Where is she?"

"She and Master Bruce are running an errand."Alfred responded.

Dick frowned. "What kind of errand?"

I scanned the Batcave and saw the Batmobile was not parked or seen in the cave.

"Does that mean..."I started.

Suddenly a location pinpoint appeared in the map of the computer screen causing Dick and I to look at it.

"The Joker again."I scowled with a small glare.

"We'll take my motorcycle."Dick declared.

After suiting up, Robin and I drove out of the Batcave and straight to Gotham City.

I took out my binoculars and spotted a familiar figure helping Batman fighting Joker and his goons.

The figure was a girl around my age wearing a purple leather jacket and pants with a black stripe on the sides with a yellow bat symbol on her chest, a black cape that snaps on the shoulders, yellow snap-on gloves and black boots. She also wore a mask that covered half of her head and leaves her mouth and nose unmasked. She had blue eyes and red hair draped around the back of her head.

It was Batgirl aka Barbara.

I gasped in shock when I saw Batgirl got thrown off the tower and was heading to the ground below.

"Robin!"I shouted in a warning tone.

"I know!"Robin answered.

Robin pressed a button on his motorcycle and the seat he was on boosted itself up.

Batgirl was caught by Robin, both of them began to fell down when the rocket seat stopped working.

I quickly put on my backpack to activate it's jet pack mode and flew up to save Robin and Batgirl.

Robin and Batgirl held my hands tightly as I flew them to safety on a nearby roof.

"Thanks, Blue Jay."Batgirl responded.

"No problem."I answered with a small nod.

Batgirl prepare to walk away, but Robin grabbed her shoulder.

"Wait."Robin instructed. "We've got to talk."

"Not now."Batgirl answered. "He needs us."

Me, Robin and Batgirl made our way up the tower with my jetpack, just in time to see Batman throw Joker's hyena pets off him.

Batgirl jumped up from the roof and air kicked a goon away.

"What?!"Joker snapped. "You should be sidewalk stroganoff!"

Robin launched forward and punched a goon out cold as I took out two of my electric birdarangs to knock out Joker's two hyena pets that were ready to bite Batman with their vicious sharp teeth.

"We changed the menu, clown face."I declared with a smirk.

"Honestly, must I do everything myself?"Joker retorted.

Joker picked up a goon's gun and began to fire upon the four of us before we quickly took over.

Batgirl directed Joker's attention toward the radar jamming device which is destroyed by the Joker's gunfire.

Robin grabbed me by the waist before we hid ourselves against the wall as the machine exploded and knocked everyone in close proximity to the ground, including the Joker.

"Houston, we have a problem."Joker mumbled in pain.

Joker collapsed on the ground, looking a bit fried as Batman came up from the building edge with Batgirl.

As soon as the police arrived and took the bad guys away, Robin wasted no time with arguing with Batman.

Apparently, Batman knew Batgirl's secret identity for almost three months after she made her first public appearance and didn't bother to tell me or Dick about it.

"How could you do this?"Robin demanded.

"She left me no choice."Batman replied. "I did what had to be done."

I frowned and looked at Batgirl.

"That still didn't explain why you had to keep this from us."I retorted.

"You or Dick weren't exactly honest with me either, Emma."Batgirl argued.

"Neither me or Dick didn't mean to lie to you, Barbara."I admitted honestly. "But we didn't want you to get involved."

"Barbara is a smart girl."Batman replied. "I knew she could help."

"Bruce never wanted to put me into danger."Batgirl assured. "I volunteered to help out."

"You think you volunteered?"Robin scowled.

"I know I did!"Batgirl argued.

Robin glanced at Batman with an angry glare.

"You don't know him like I do, Barbara!"Robin snapped. "He manipulates, pulls strings! He'll do anything to get what he wants!"

Me and Batgirl stood in silence as Batman looked at Robin.

"I thought we had the same goals."Batman said.

"Dinah never told you? We don't!"Robin shouted angrily. "Not after that little incident with the Team! I don't know how Emma is able to care about you, when you think nothing but your dumb mission! I had it! The game's over, Batman! I quit!"

My eyes widen in utter shock at Robin's declaration, unable to believe what I just heard with my very own ears.

Dick no longer wanted to be Robin.

Robin started walking away, Batman reached his hand out to try to bring him back.

"Robin, wait."Batman instructed.

Robin grew angrier before he whirled around and sent a punch to the Batman's uncovered jaw.

Batgirl gasped in horror while I stared at the sight with a stunned expression.

Dick simply ignored it before removing the black domino mask on his face and the cape from his back.

"Dick-"I started.

I took a few steps forward, only to receive a glare from my boyfriend.

"Don't follow me."Robin scowled.

Robin shot out his grappling hook from his belt, swinging away from us as Batgirl checked on Batman.

Tears rolled down from my cheeks, knowing I won't see the guy I love for a while.

Not after this.

"It's alright, Blue Jay."Batman declared as he stood up. "Everything will be fine. We'll see him again."

I removed my mask to dry away my tears as Batgirl gave me a hug to comfort me.

"I hope so."I answered a with a weak smile and thought. "I love him too much."

Dick quits being Robin, what will happen next?
