Blue Jay

Chapter 26: The Kid From Crime Alley

Mount Justice

June 10th, 18:32 EST

Blue Jay's POV

"Recognised: Blue Jay: B-00."the computer's voice announced.

I quietly walked into the Cave to join the Team as Kid Flash called out to me.

"Hey, BJ!"Kid Flash called out. "What's up?"

"Hey."I said simply.

"Where's Robin?"Miss Martian asked.

"Robin has left the nest."I answered.

"What do you mean?"Superboy questioned.

"Come on."Kid Flash remarked. "Sure the guy disappears a lot..."

"I mean he's not coming back."I admitted. "He left."

"Left?"Artemis repeated. "We know Robin and he wouldn't just-"

"He quit!"I shouted out in anger. "It's all because of Batman! He kept overshadowing him!"

I shoved past the Team, leaving them wondering just what happened.

But then I stopped to look back at my friends.

"Sorry, guys."I apologised with a regretful look. "I don't mean to yell. I...I just need sometime to deal with this."

I slowly walked away from my team mates, leaving them to talk to each other about what happened.

Aqualad was back at Atlantis at the moment, but the others will probably tell him about Robin quitting the Team when he came back.

After a few minutes, I walked passed the kitchen and sat down on the green sofa to take out my phone.

When I went on my contact list, I notice I haven't receive a single call or message from Dick after leaving us causing me to sigh and put my phone away.

Where in the world can he be?

"Everything okay?"

I turned around and saw Zatanna.

"Hey, Zatanna."I greeted with a small smile. "I'm fine. Really really fine."

"Are you sure?"Zatanna asked. "I heard you throwing a tantrum not far from my room."

"Sorry. Robin had a fight with Batman and now he quit being around him."I admitted with a hint of sadness. "He got fid up of living in Batman's shadow, but I don't where he is now. I worried about him."

"Then give him a chance to cool off."Zatanna insisted. "Robin isn't someone who doesn't know how to take care of himself."

I looked at Zatanna quietly, knowing she was right.

Dick needed time to know who he was and be his own man.

"You're right."I stated with a smile. "Thanks, Zatanna."

Gotham City

August 17, 22:23 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

I followed Batman into Crime Alley after we successfully stopped a group thugs that were doing their criminal operations in this infamous area of Gotham.

A quarter of a century ago, this place used to be park row.

But then park row changed into something fowl...and became called Crime Alley.

It is also known as the place where dad witnessed his parents being murdered.

It's sad, but that's how the Batman began.

Batman and I returned to the alley, only to find the wheels of the Batmobile missing.

"Unreal."Batman commented.

"The unreal just got real."I replied with a hint of amusement.

Suddenly a figure that appeared to be two years younger than me stood up from the Batmobile.

The boy had uncombed and unwashed black hair, green eyes, tattered clothes while dirt smeared across his face and up his arms.

By the boy's appearance, I immediately could tell he was homeless.

I notice a tire iron in the kid's fist, which linked him to the tires missing from the Batmobile.

Another one already had the screws loose.

It doesn't take my dad aka the world's greatest detective to put two and two together.

There weren't many thieves who would dare tangle with the Batmobile, yet this kid was all but eleven and attempting what most super villains wouldn't try.

"Hey kid."I spoke up. "You do realise that's the Batmobile. Right?"

"Duh."the boy scoffed. "You do realise your car is parked in Crime Alley. Right?"

Batman took a step forward, inspecting what has been done to his vehicle.

The boy pressed himself further into the wall, as if by doing so he can meld with the bricks and thereby escape our presence.

"I'm going to ask you this once, kid."Batman said. "So give some serious thought to your answer."

"What?"the boy questioned and gave a brave look.

"Are you hungry?"Batman asked.

I smiled at the boy's surprised expression.

Batman appeared to be cold, but deep down he was caring.

After the wheels were placed back, me and the street kid sat at the back seats of the Batmobile.

"I'm Blue Jay."I admitted. "But you can call me Jay if you want."

The boy's green eyes regarded my hand suspiciously for a minute before he reached his hand to shake mine.

"Jason."the boy answered with a smile. "Jason Todd."

Batman drove to Big Belly Burger to get takeaways for us before we arrived to a field that was near Wayne Manor.

The moment we sat on the Batmobile to eat, Jason immediately started munching on his ham burger and slurping on his drink.

I chuckled quietly to see Jason enjoy eating his meal.

"Slow down, Jason."Batman instructed. "You're going to lose a finger."

"Sorry."Jason answered as he continued eating. "This is the closest thing to a home cooked meal I've had...since I had a home."

I looked at Jason with a sad expression before looking at the view.

It was night time, the stars were shining and Gotham City appeared to look peaceful even though we were out of the town.

"So you don't have parents?"I asked.

"My mum is dead."Jason responded and looked down. "And my dad is in prison for life. I steal things in order to survive."

"Why do you think it's okay to steal from others?"Batman questioned.

"Your kidding me?"Jason scoffed. "Look at this view. Freaking billionaire Bruce Wayne thinks his king of the world."

I slowly munched on my hamburger as Batman spoke to Jason.

"Sometimes you just have to give people a chance, Jason."Batman declared. "They usually surprise you."

After we finished eating our lunch, Batman drove me and Jason back to the Batcave.

The soon as the Batmobile opened up, Jason went off his seat as I stood next to him.

"Whoa..."Jason said in awe.

I smiled at Jason's reaction of the Batcave before Batman looked at me.

"Blue Jay, head up stairs."Batman ordered. "Me and Jason are going to talk."

I nodded and walked out of the Batcave, leaving Jason alone with Batman.

But I already knew where this was going to go anyway.

Wayne Manor

August 24, 08:30 EDT

Emma's POV

BEEP! BEEP!

I tiredly slammed my alarm clock shot before going off my bed and get dressed to start the day.

I placed on a orange t-shirt, blue trousers and black white trainers while my hair was tied in a braided ponytail.

After getting dressed, I made my way to the Gym where I saw Bruce and Jason doing some training together.

Bruce had decided to take Jason under his roof since he saw potential in the boy and the kid needed to be given a better life than the one in the streets.

Of course, this also meant he had to know the secret identities of Batman, the first Robin and Blue Jay as well.

Oh! Here's a fun fact!

It turns out that Jason's birthday is August 16 so his birthday is three days after mine.

My mind has been feeling empty since Dick left us, so having Jason around seemed to help me remove all the painful feelings I had.

But it still hurt that Dick disappeared without a trace, even from school.

It's now being two months since he quit being Robin.

I watched as Jason held a pugil stick to practice hitting using his fighting skills and surprisingly ended up breaking one of the dummies head off.

To be more clearer, Jason had energy and skills that were amazing which Alfred described to be 'such unfettered ferocity'.

But to me, the boy seemed to be the very equal of Dick when he was his age.

"How did I do, Bruce?"Jason asked.

"Better."Bruce responded. "But remember not to use brutal force in a real fight."

"Okay!"Jason remarked and notice me standing in the doorway. "Hey Emma, were you watching?"

"Just now."I chuckled. "You're getting better."

"Thanks!"Jason thanked.

Jason quickly blocked Bruce's pugil stick with his to prevent himself from being hit.

"You work with me, Jason."Bruce stated with a firm tone. "You follow the rules. Rule Number 1: You give me everything you've got. Rule Number 2: Then you give me more. And Rule Number 3: I make the rules."

"Yes, sir!"Jason answered and saluted.

I covered my mouth to giggle quietly, finding Jason's respond adorable.

"I wonder what are you doing now, Dick?"I thought.

Jump City

August 24, 13:40 EDT

A bunch of passengers came out of a train including Dick Grayson (the former Robin) holding a brown backpack that contained his belongings.

Dick took out his phone and went onto his contact list and pressed Emma's phone number.

He was about to press the word 'Call', but then put his phone away.

Dick wanted to call his girlfriend, but he was still not happy with Batman after what he did.

The former Boy Wonder was fourteen years old and now had moved to another city (though it is known to still be close to Gotham) to continue fighting crime, though this time he needed to go solo.

"I call you back when I'm ready, Emi."Dick declared quietly.

Dick placed his phone in the pocket of his black jacket before heading out of the station and into the streets of Jump City to start his new life.
