Chapter 28: Saving the World from Ruins

Gotham City

December 1st, 16:41 EDT

Blue Jay stared quietly at the guy in front of him while standing on the roof of a building.

The guy appeared to be sixteen years old and had a muscular build but also had grown a bit more taller. His costume was a black jumpsuit with steel bracelets, a utility belt, steel toed boots and a symbol of a hawk-like bird on his torso in a dark shade of blue. The bird on his costume seems to be spreading its wings out as if it was flying.

Behind her mask, Blue Jay's eyes widen in disbelief as she realised the guy in front of her was no other than Dick.

"Robin…"Blue Jay whispered with a smile.

Blue Jay rushed up to Nightwing and they embraced each other.

The two share a small kiss before looking at each other in the eyes.

"It's been almost two years."Blue Jay remarked. "I thought I would never see you again."

"I'm sorry I took so long."Nightwing apologised. "But I needed to learn to be my own man. Call me, Nightwing."

Blue Jay smirked. "Nightwing, huh?"

"Hey, no one can be a Boy Wonder forever."Nightwing stated with a small smirk.

Blue Jay wrapped her arms around Nightwing's neck to give him another kiss.

"Tanjoubi omedetou, Nightwing."Blue Jay whispered.

Nightwing smiled. "Arigato, Blue Jay."

Blue Jay and Nightwing suddenly heard somebody clear his throat and turn around to see Robin looking at them.

"Hey, Jason."Blue Jay greeted. "This is Nightwing aka Dick Grayson. The first and former Robin. Dick, this is Jason Todd. The new Robin."

Robin let out a small chuckle at hearing Nightwing's real name.

"You're name is Dick?"Robin laughed. "As in-"

"It's short for Richard, kid."Nightwing grumbled. "Don't get any wrong ideas."

Blue Jay quickly snorted her giggle as Nightwing gave her small glare.

Mount Justice

February 17, 14:36 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

I placed a plate of dragon fruit macarons and cream cheese blueberry madeleines that I made back at Wayne Manor on the kitchen table causing Robin to immediately stuff his face with the sweets.

"Don't eat too much, Jason."I chuckled. "They are for Nightwing and the Team too."

"I can't help it, Emma."Robin murmured and munched on a madeleine. "You're sweets make it difficult for somebody to share them."

I shook my head with a smirk as I thought about the events that recently happened.

There have been several earthquakes happening around the world.

The only villains that we have encountered lately are Cheshire, Sportsmaster, Lex Luthor, Black Manta, Blockbuster, Icicle Jr., Killer Frost, the Riddler and Psimon.

All of these villains from the Light have been causing me and the Team trouble lately, but we were slowly putting the pieces together of their gathering fragments for some reason.

Whatever it was, it could only mean trouble.

All of us were then gathered in mission room as I notice Aqualad angrily walking away from Aquaman, who he was speaking to in the edge of the mission room.

I wanted to ask Aqualad what got him so upset, but I brushed it off since it was between him and his mentor.

Two screens of Batman and Dr Sandsmark appeared in the room, earning our attention.

"Good work, Team."Batman declared. "You saved Dr Sandsmark and retrieved all the of the fragments."

"Riddler and the Light must've been monitoring our satellites from the first day of the dig."Dr Sandsmark exclaimed. "So, when we found the fragment, they knew."

"Dr Sandsmark, is there anything more you can tell us about the Light's plans?"Batman asked. "Anything you might've seen or overheard?"

"When they moved me. I did see large pieces of equipment."Dr Sandsmark explained. "It looked they were building something. The machinery was covered with glowing symbols. But I only caught a glimpse."

"Glowing symbols."Zatanna said. "They could be using techno-sorcery to build another threat."

I nodded in agreement as Nightwing glanced at Batman.

"Anything new from Aquagirl?"Nightwing asked.

"She's not responding."Batman replied.

"Wait, there's something wrong here."Dr Sandsmark stated.

"Yes."Garth agreed with a frown. "It is not like Aquagirl to walk away from her duties."

"That's not what I meant."Dr Sandsmark replied. "This fragment. It's a fake."

"What?"Artemis questioned.

"Nice one, doc."Kid Flash chuckled.

"This is no joke."Dr Sandsmark added. "This fragment is made of a completely different material. It's not part of the statue."

"Then that means…"Superboy started.

"Gotham was a distraction."Aqualad finished.

"I should have known Riddler was making things too easy."Nightwing retorted.

"It's alright, Nightwing."I assured. "He fooled me as well. But the question is why we would he do that?"

"Tula…"Garth started.

"Still no respond."Batman answered. "Pulling up surveillance footage of the museum from around the time Alpha Squad left for Gotham."

A footage appeared and played in the center, revealing Aquagirl that was joined by 'Tempest'.

"Garth, I did not expect to see you."Aquagirl said. "I was just preparing to contact the Team."

"I have been with you the whole time."Tempest admitted with a smug smirk.

I glared at the fake Garth next to Tula as I suddenly felt butterflies in my stomach.

"I have a bad feeling about this."Kid Flash stated.

"Remember when I said the markings on the statue were from an alien race?"Aquagirl asked. "I asked Green Lantern to consult with the Guardians' historical records on Oa. He learned Tiamat was not truly a creature at all! It was a piece of alien technology. An ancient weapon. This statue is that weapon."

'Tempest' smirked and holds up the joined fragments to the last one.

"Garth, wait."Aquagirl instructed. "I do not think you should- You recovered the last fragment!"

'Tempest' smirked. "Actually, I had it all along."

Alpha Squad recognised the fake Tempest's voice immediately.

"Garth?"Aquagirl asked.

'Tempest' changed into his true form, revealing himself to be Klarion.

"Nice of you to babysit."Klarion remarked.

"Klarion!"Aquagirl scowled.

"But it's time to let the big kids have their turn…"Klarion declared.

Klarion opened a portal and walked through it.

"You will not escape!"Aquagirl shouted.

Aquagirl ran into the portal to chase after Klarion before the footage ended.

"Tula!"Garth called out.

"We must go after her."Aqualad insisted.

"We all want to find her. But you heard Aquagirl."Nightwing reminded. "That statue is a weapon. We need to know what we're dealing with first. Retrieving the last file Tula was working on. Tiamat was a weapon of chaos fueled by water. It caused global disasters: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tidal waves… Aquagirl's notes say it's impervious to damage."

"Great."Artemis responded sarcastically. "So the Light is about to release an unstoppable chaos creature-thing on the world and we don't have a clue how to stop it."

"We're missing something here."Nightwing said with a troubled expression. "In Gotham, Riddler said something about "one of the oldest charades every played". I'll bet he was talking about Marduk and Tiamat."

"A charade…"Aqualad started.

"Well, if Tiamat was so unstoppable, then how did Marduk, a young unknown hero, manage to do it all on his own?"Miss Martian asked.

"Like any other machine…"I started.

"He must have shut it down."Superboy finished.

"But how?"Aqualad questioned.

"Don't know."Kid Flash replied. "But when he was done, he scattered the pieces across the planet to prevent a repeat performance. Worked until now."

"Disaster reports coming in now."Batman warned. "A flood in Singapore. Tsunami warning in Japan…"

I suddenly became nervous at the mention of the hometown where Keiko, Ayumi and the rest of my family were living in.

"It's started."Superboy said. "We have to find the statue."

"And Tula."Aqualad added.

"Where do we go?"Garth questioned.

"The earthquakes!"Kid Flash exclaimed. "They followed the statue fragments. If I can find the epicenter…"

Kid Flash brings up a 3D representation of Earth.

"Darn it!"Kid Flash scowled. "There are eight epicenters of seismic activity worldwide! Most are probably natural, but one of them has to be the Tiamat locale. Greece, Spain, USA (south Arizona), New Zealand, Haiti, Kenya, Bialya, and Russia."

"So which one is it?"Superboy asked.

"We will split up."Aqualad insisted. "Send a squad to all the epicenters."

"Epicenters."Nightwing repeated. "What about Klarion's epicenter?"

An idea came to my head before I glanced at Zatanna.

"Zatanna, you located the locus of his sorcery when all the adults went missing."I complemented. "Can you try and use the same spell to locate Tula?"

"I don't know. He was using some big mojo then."Zatanna admitted. "It made waves. Of course, I've had a lot of practice since. I can give it a shot. At least try to narrow it down from among the seismic options. Etacol eht retnecipe fo S'noiralk skcigam!"

Zatanna chanted her spell and Tula's location was revealed in the map.

"Coordinates locked."Nightwing said. "She's in Bialya."

Flash puts his right

Bialya

Miss Martian drove the Bio-Shop to the Bialyian Desert Canyon before the hatch opened causing Aqualad, me, Kid Flash and Superboy to jump out.

"Alpha Squad to Cave."Aqualad said. "We have arrived in Bialya."

"Batman to Alpha."Batman replied. "More disaster reports are coming in. I've sent the League out to help quell the panic and start rescue efforts."

"Then we shall focus on finding Aquagirl and the statue."Aqualad stated.

As we walked in the canyon, we found it heavily protected by the Bialyan army and LexCorp robots, but that wasn't going to stop us from getting to Aquagirl.

We soon entered the royal gardens of Marduk's Temple which was a lush and vibrant landscape.

"Esagila's Royal Garden."I murmured in awe.

"It is…beautiful."Aqualad admitted.

Kid Flash let out a low whistle in agreement.

Suddenly an earthquake rumbled and rocked the ground beneath our feet which snapped me out of my daydreaming.

"Batman to Alpha."Batman spoke up. "More disasters are being reported in South America, Taipei and Antarctica. We're running out of time."

Suddenly undead soldiers emerged from the ground and we're joined up by LexCorp robots that were similar to the ones before to stop our path.

I threw out my exploding birdarangs at five undead soldiers causing their heads to explode and attacked the rest with Superbly while Kid Flash and Aqualad took down the LexCorp robots.

Once the obstacles were defeated, we arrived to a hall of statues.

"Alpha Squad to Cave. We found an underground temple."Aqualad declared. "But there are two paths leading into it. I am concerned we will not cover the space in time. Requesting backup."

"Acknowledged."Nightwing answered. "Bringing Beta Squad in now."

With my teammates help, we were able to unlock the door by pushing a lion statue towards a warrior statue, only for nine large hammer-wielding statues to come to life.

We defeated the nine statues in all before the door opened automatically.

"Beta to Alpha."Nightwing admitted. "We have arrived at the temple."

"Take the northwest entrance."Aqualad instructed.

"Are we close to Aquagirl's location?"Superboy asked.

I took out my mini laptop to locate which room of the temple that Aquagirl could be and a small red dot appeared in the chamber nearby.

"She's in the room known as the Tiamat's Well."I complemented.

"Let's go."Aqualad insisted.

We all headed to Tiamat's Well and quickly hid behind the columns when the huge doors in front of us.

Klarion's cat named Teekl walked into the chamber and appeared to holding some sort of tablet in its mouth.

Aqualad strike at Teekl causing the small cat to become scared and drop the tablet.

Me and the rest of the group came out our hiding place and walked over to Aqualad as he picked up the tablet.

The large doors to Tiamat's Well burst open, revealing Klarion walking in with Blockbuster, who closed the doors behind them.

"No! No! No!"Klarion complained. "I wake the dragon as a weapon for the Light and then the Tablet of Destiny is mine! They promised!"

"Tablet of Destiny?"Aqualad said. "This is the secret. This is what Marduk used to stop Tiamat?"

"Give it to me!"Klarion demanded.

"Come and get it."Aqualad challenged.

Klarion glanced and smirked at Blockbuster.

"Okay, Blockbuster."Klarion sneered. "Time to earn your cookies!"

Klarion tapped Blockbuster on the shoulder before the being stood up and roared at us.

I held my birdarangs in my hands before me and the boys began to fight our opponents.

The Witch Boy and the mutated human gave us a fight that was no cake walk and Superboy or Kid Flash didn't seem to have a chance against Blockbuster.

Aqualad used his water attacks to prevent himself from being hit by Klarion's fireballs as I rushed and took out my whip to strangle Blockbuster by the neck.

"Oi, ugly!"I shouted, earning Blockbuster's attention. "Why don't you pick somebody your own side?"

"Gladly, girly!"Blockbuster scowled.

I quickly lured Blockbuster to where Aqualad stood and the mutated human got hit by Klarion's fireball attack which left him vulnerable.

Klarion growled seeing Blockbuster defeated as he flew in mid-air.

"You are ruining everything!"Klarion snapped.

Klarion blasts Aqualad against a column, only for the Tablet of Destiny to get broken.

"My tablet!"Klarion shouted.

Me, Kid Flash and Superboy rushed over to Aqualad as Klarion picked Teekl up.

"You're right. Things to do. People to see. Milk to spill."Klarion remarked evilly and smirked at Aqualad. "But give my regards to your Aquagirlfriend."

Klarion and Teekl exit through a portal as we looked at the broken tablet.

"We have lost our only means of destroying Tiamat."Aqualad admitted grimly.

"Seriously?"Kid Flash said in disbelief. "That tablet was the only way to stop that monster?"

"That can't be it."Superboy denied.

"There's always another way."I insisted. "Let's go check on the others."

Me, Aqualad, Superboy and Kid Flash ran toward the doors to go inside Tiamat's Well.

We suddenly heard loud thumping noises in the distance as the temple suddenly started to shake violently.

We arrived into Tiamat's Well, only to close our eyes as the whole chamber got covered in white light.

Aqualad and the rest of us ran inside the Sacred Well Room as Garth runs up to Nightwing.

"Where is she?"Garth asked. "Where is Tula?"

Nightwing didn't say anything and turned toward a pile of debris causing all of us to follow his gaze.

My body froze in shock when I saw Aquagirl's body beneath it causing a horrible feeling to grow inside me.

No…

I covered my mouth as Aqualad lifted the broken column away and Garth rushed to his girlfriend.

"No!"Garth shouted in despair. "Tula!"

Garth, in shock, pulled Aquagirl out and cradled her in his arms.

"She sacrificed herself to save us, to save the world."Nightwing declared quietly. "I'm so sorry, Garth."

Garth closed his eyes and continued holding Aquagirl as I bowed my head down in grief.

"Beta Squad to Cave."Nightwing reported. "The threat has been eliminated. But…"

Flash puts his right

Mount Justice

February 18, 09:59 EST

I stood with Nightwing, Robin and everyone else gathered in the Mission Room, mourning over our fallen teammate.

The world was saved, but we lost one of our close friend.

Batman stood watching us on the screen.

"Team, I know you are all grieving now, but remember you saved billions of lives today."Batman announced. "Dr Sandsmark is safe and rescue efforts are underway across the globe. With Tiamat dormant once again, the world is no longer threatened. We received the statue fragments from Maruk's Temple, and we will destroy them."

Kid Flash puts his right hand on Artemis' left shoulder and Artemis grabbed his hand with her right hand.

I looked down while a couple of tears escaped my eyes as Nightwing gave my hand a gentle squeeze.

"Yeah? Tell that to Tula."Artemis said quietly. "Tell that to Garth."

"Every member knows the risks, Artemis."Batman declared. "It is not the first loss we have suffered, nor will it be the last."

I bit my lip, knowing what my mentor was saying is true.

"Batman's right."Nightwing agreed, earning our attention. "The mistake would be to let Aquagirl's sacrifice be in vain. We can make her death mean something by continuing the fight. And taking that fight to the Light's doorstep. What do you say, Aqualad?"

All of us turned around and saw Aqualad was not in the room.

"Perhaps it's time you all got some rest."Batman suggested.

All of us quietly left the mission room while Robin stood next to me.

Poor Kaldur.

He loved Tula with all his heart and kept loving her even though she chose to be with Garth.

How fate can be so cruel...

I snapped out my thoughts when I looked at Robin.

"You okay, Jason?"I asked quietly.

"Sort of…"Robin answered and rubbed the back of his neck. "So these things also happen in the hero life?"

I gave a comforting hug to the Boy Wonder, who was only thirteen years old.

"Sad but true."I admitted honestly. "What's important that we will make sure Tula's sacrifice won't go in vain, right?"

Robin nodded. "Alright."
