confetti confessions
"That was a lovely service!"
"Congratulations, lads"
"Beautiful couple!"
Sirius and Remus walked through the middle of a throng of their wedding guests, who were throwing confetti over their heads. Fairy lights twinkled above them, and the newly married couple kissed. A camera flashed in their faces, and Sirius and Remus grinned for the photos. Remus rolled his eyes humorously as Sirius pretended to lift Remus's kilt up for the cameras.
As everyone dispersed around the party, Sirius advanced on his best man, James Potter, and pulled him into a rib-splitting hug. James slapped him on the back and kissed his cheek. "Congratulations, mate." He turned to Remus, who was smiling widely, and hugged him too. "I'm so pleased for you both!"
"Thanks, James," Remus replied. "Come sit with us."
"Yeah, haven't you got a little something you need to be sharing with us?" Sirius said with a wink, nudging James in the ribs. "Don't think we haven't forgotten just because it's our wedding day."
"Oh good, yes, state the obvious." James replied nervously. He followed Remus and Sirius to their table, which was at the very top of the room, overlooking the dance floor and the rest of the dinner tables. Some of the wedding guests were milling in the middle of the room, others were sitting at their tables, chatting amongst themselves. Sirius and Remus held hands as they sat beside each other, their new gold wedding rings glinting on their fingers, and James smiled warmly.
"It's so nice to see you guys so happy," James said. "I'm so pleased for you both."
"Yeah, yeah, save the soppy shit," Sirius scoffed. "Who have you been shagging, and when do we get to meet them?"
"Sirius!" Remus chastised, but he was laughing. "I think what our dear friend is trying to say is, who is the lovely person you are dating now?"
James reached for a bottle of prosecco that was on the table in front of them, and filled up the champagne flutes in front of Sirius and Remus—he poured an especially large measurement in Sirius's glass. "Are you sure you just want champagne?" he asked. "I can get you a gin and tonic, if you like?" he eyed Sirius as he spoke.
Sirius raised his eyebrow, suddenly looking very suspicious. "Why would I—James, what's the matter with you?"
James could feel the back of his neck growing very hot, and he tugged at the tight collar of his shirt. "Nothing, nothing. Listen, you're probably going to have something to say about this, so I just want you to know—"
"It's not one of Lily's friends, is it?" Remus asked curiously, keeping his voice low. He and Sirius glanced across the wedding party to where a familiar, auburn-haired girl was chatting animatedly with her friends, dressed beautifully in green satin. "I know you and Lily have stayed good friends since you split up, but I don't think she would be too happy if—"
"It's not one of Lily's friends," James said, exasperated.
"Well, who is it then?" Sirius demanded to know.
"Oh, fucking hell…" James wanted to fall through the floor right there. "Just give me a minute."
Another person suddenly advanced on their table. "Here I am!" It was Regulus Black, Sirius's brother, dressed impeccably in a black suit and tie. "Congratulations on your nuptials, dear brother."
"Regulus," Sirius greeted. "Thank you. Glad you could make it. Though, you could have dressed a little less like you're going to a funeral."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world." Regulus smiled at him and Remus.
"Can I catch up with you in a bit?" Sirius asked, trying to give his brother a meaningful look. "Remus and I are just waiting to meet James's date."
"He's already here." Regulus sat down at James's other side, and grinned at Sirius.
There was a long pause. James stared at Sirius determinedly, waiting for the penny to drop. Remus released a gasp, his face splitting into a shocked smile, but Sirius still looked dumbfounded.
"I don't understand," Sirius said eventually, looking between James and Regulus. "Who is it? Where are they?"
"I'm not drunk enough for this conversation," whispered James, looking pleadingly at Remus.
Regulus made a bold move to place his hand on James's knee, and Sirius's eyes widened considerably. "It's me, you idiot."
Sirius's mouth fell open, and the pause that followed was even longer than the one previously. The penny finally dropped, and he stood up in his seat, glaring down at James and Regulus. "What—you—James—my brother?!"
"Sirius, sit down before people start to stare at us," Remus hissed, dragging his husband back down into his seat.
"I can't believe this!" gasped Sirius, clutching his heart dramatically, clearly overwhelmed. "You don't even know each other! Do you?"
Regulus rolled his eyes. "We've got to know each other quite well, actually."
"Sex," sniggered Remus. Sirius elbowed him roughly in the ribs.
"I don't even know what to say," Sirius finally said, looking deflated. "Was there really no one else you could pick, James?"
"I didn't start fancying your brother just to piss you off, mate."
Just before Sirius could open his mouth to retort with something smart, a tinkle of music started playing, and Remus tapped him on the arm. "Come on, Pads. It's time for our first dance."
Sirius stood up with Remus, but he eyed James and Regulus as he was dragged onto the dance floor. "We haven't finished." The newlyweds started to dance in the middle of the dance floor, swaying to the soft music. James turned to Regulus and smiled weakly.
"Well, that didn't go as bad as I expected."
Regulus grinned and leaned closer to James to entwine their hands together. "I told you. You know what he's like. He'll air the dramatics for a couple of weeks, but he'll get over it." Other couples were starting to join Sirius and Remus on the dance floor, and Regulus tugged James's hand. "Shall we dance?"
James caught Sirius's eye across the dance floor, and already knew the answer to that. "It might not be the best idea to flaunt our relationship in your brother's face so soon after announcing it, babe."
Regulus glanced at Sirius and Remus before turning back to James. "Fair enough." He lowered his voice and moved closer to James's ear. "We can do a different type of dance when we get back to our hotel room, anyway."
James almost choked on his champagne.
