Hiccup Haddock and the Winged Beasts

So, this is probably something I'll do a little bit then put on the backburner for a long time until, a month or two later, I decide to continue it but whatever.

As you may know, I'm a bit of a fan of HTTYD crossovers and lately I've been wanting to put the characters of HTTYD into the magical world of Harry Potter. Possibly changing up a few characters as I go, we'll see.

Quick note, the whole thing where Hiccup wakes up and doesn't know anything about where he is? Yeah, been there, wrote that, so I'm just gonna say this is the world he's always lived in. Also, it's a bit hard to write, but you can imagine all the HTTYD characters with British accents if you want. I'll be keeping their original names, though, because that just seems so much easier than coming up with new names.

That is all for now, enjoy the first chapter!

Chapter 1: Diagon Alley

Dear, Mr. Haddock.

It is with pleasure that I write to you to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

The term begins soon, we will await your arrival.

Sincerely yours, Minerva McGonagall.

That's what was written on the letter that Hiccup received days ago, telling him that the time had finally arrived that he could begin attending Hogwarts.

Hiccup's father wasn't a very well-known wizard, but a mysterious disappearance of Hiccup's mother when he was just a baby did leave a somewhat bad word on his name, with tales that she may be working for he-who-must-not-be-named.

Despite this weight on his shoulders, Hiccup was more than excited to head into Diagon Alley to collect whatever he needed to start his first year at Hogwarts.

Growing up, Hiccup lived in an area with a very high Muggle population so he didn't know any other wizard other than himself and his father, in fact his father kept magic as a whole a secret up until he was 7 as he didn't want anyone giving him looks.

However, knowing that he was going to be going to a school full of wizards and witches thrilled him to no extent, he thought that perhaps he could finally meet some friends that he can talk to about magic and stuff.

Hiccup was just walking along the streets of the magic laced Diagon Alley, mindlessly looking up at the equipment list given to him with his letter when suddenly he collides with someone holding a stack of books, causing the both of them to fall onto their butts.

Just within earshot, Hiccup heard a medium length, black haired boy standing next to a black haired girl saying, "Ha! Look at that! Those two can't even look where they're going!"

The girl nudges him and says, "Leave them alone, Snotlout."

The boy, presumably named Snotlout, shrugs and replies, "Hey, gotta have fun while I can." as they both walk off.

After recovering and shaking his head to Snotlout, Hiccup replies, "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!"

The other person replies with a female voice, "No no, I wasn't paying attention either. It's fine."

Hiccup looks up and spots a very beautiful blonde haired girl around his age with blue eyes that made the sky seem dull. Hiccup blinks upon seeing the girl and says, "Uh, hi."

The girl smiles and replies, "…Hi."

Hiccup then realizes he was staring and begins helping the girl collect the books, even offering to hold a few of them. Once the books were collected, Hiccup says to the girl, "Hey, sorry about that. I was kind of distracted."

The girl shakes her head. "It's no problem, really! I couldn't see a thing behind these books. I'm Astrid, by the way."

Hiccup nods. "I'm Hiccup. You, uh, starting at Hogwarts too?"

Astrid nods. "Yep, it's my first year! I'm so excited to learn about magic! Well, magic that I don't already know about."

Hiccup nods. "You already know magic?"

Astrid nods back. "Yep. My parents are great wizards and I actually knew a few other children with magic growing up, so my parents got me quick to learning a bit before coming here. I'd show you if I didn't have all of these books to carry."

Hiccup chuckles to that. "Perhaps you could somehow shrink the books down."

Astrid smiles. "Yeah, haven't really learned the shrinking charm yet, but I'm sure they'll teach it. Anyway, what about you? You need any help?"

Hiccup holds up the list and says, "Yeah, I actually just got here so you mind helping me out?"

Astrid nods. "Well, if you ask me, a wizard simply can't be a wizard without a...?"

Hiccup raises a brow to that. "Set of robes?"

Astrid tried hard to stifle the laughter. "You really have been out of the blue, haven't you? I'm talking about a wand!"

Hiccup face-palms himself. "A wand! Of course!"

Astrid motions to behind Hiccup. "Well, right there is Gobber's, who gives wands to just about every wizard and witch these days."

Hiccup nods. "Thanks, Astrid. You sure you don't need help with those books?"

Astrid chuckles to that. "I'll be fine. Hey, I'll see you on the Hogwarts Express, right?"

Hiccup nods. "Sounds great." He then turns around and walks into the shop labeled, 'Gobber's.' It was quite the old shop with lots of shelves holding wands in the back, and standing on a ladder was a very large, blonde haired man with what looked like a wand for his left hand.

The man says to Hiccup, "Ah, hello there, young man. I am Gobber, the giver of wands to all students. Now, what is the name?"

Hiccup replies. "Uh, Hiccup Haddock."

Gobber smiles wide. "Ah, Haddock! Your father is Stoick Haddock, right? Dear, dear friend of mine, we actually went to Hogwarts together, same year."

Hiccup's eyes widen to that. "Really? Dad never mentioned you."

Gobber nods. "Ah, don't feel too bad about it. I know where you all live and I get it. He did mention having a son through a letter he sent me, 11 years ago, but since my work here is so important I never had the chance to come and meet you, until now at least."

Hiccup then rubs his arm. "Uh…you haven't heard anything about…my Mom have you?"

Gobber sighs. "I have heard rumours, and while I don't know what to believe at this time, I will say this. I know Stoick well, and if he raised you as well as he was raised, then I do believe you are a good person at heart."

Hiccup smiles to that. "That does make me feel a bit better."

Gobber nods. "Now, family business aside, let's find you a wand shall we? Just remember, it is not the wizard that picks the wand, but the wand that picks the wizard."

Hiccup raises a brow to that. "H-how exactly does that work?"

Gobber chuckles. "I'm afraid I don't have THAT much time. Now, let's see here…" He looks around his shelves and pulls a box from the mid area of the shelves closest to the front, opens it, and pulls out a brown wand that had a slight bulge at the base. "Here's one that's a good starter wand for first year students. 10 ½ inches, oak base, badger claw core. Why don't you try that one out?"

Hiccup takes the stick of wood and gives it a flick, causing a flower pot behind the desk to shatter into bits. Hiccup pulls his arm back and replies, "Uh, sorry about that." as he hands the wand back.

Gobber chuckles. "Oh, not to worry. Happens all the time, that's why the repair charm exists. Ok, so that one wasn't quite for you…ah, here's a rather unusual choice." he pulls out a box from further back and pulls out black wand with a red stripe along the base. "Stained dark elm base, 10 inches, dragon heartstring core. Not one that I normally recommend for a first year Hogwarts student but, who knows? You might get lucky."

Hiccup grabs the black wand by the handle and as soon as he holds it, a light shines around him, and his hair begins to stand up as if the wind was pushing at him from underneath. Gobber smiles to this. "I'd say we have a winner!"

Once the light fades, Hiccup says, "Th-thank you, Gobber. Wait, you said this has a dragon heartstring core. So…dragons do exist?" As mentioned, Hiccup wasn't told about magic until only a few years ago, so all he had to go on was myths and tales from muggle books.

Gobber nods. "Indeed they do. I've never seen one, mind you, but I have heard many things. Course, you wouldn't want to go looking for these creatures. Very dangerous and deadly, dragons can be, they could burn you to a crisp in just one move. But, dragons are very rarely seen near Hogwarts and never go to Muggle cities, so you should be fine."

Hiccup nods and thanks Gobber again before walking out of the shop where Astrid stops him, empty handed, and says, "Oh, hey Hiccup! I see you found your wand! Wow, that sure is unique, what's the core?"

Hiccup replies, "Uh, dragon heartstring."

Astrid's eyes widen. "DRA-dragon heartstring?!" She almost wanted to shout it out, but didn't want to cause any weird looks. "Whoa, I don't know a single student that has a wand like that. You should feel incredibly lucky that that wand chose you!"

Hiccup nods. "Yeah, I suppose. Anyway, you finished shopping?"

Astrid nods. "Yep, just dropped everything off at the room I'm staying at for the night. I can help you find the rest if you'd like."

Hiccup smiles. "Sounds great!"

So, Astrid and Hiccup walk around to the various shops as they find books, a wizard robe and hat plus some other clothes, and other supplies that Hiccup will need to start Hogwarts. Once everything was collected, it was already starting to get late, so they grabbed a quick supper together before heading off to their hotel rooms for the night.
