A seemingly normal flat-screen TV lay dormant in a local convenience store. Suddenly, it turned on. A swirling black and white vortex appeared on the screen, and out from it, a blond-haired child fell out of it.
The boy quickly got up and looked around, not really knowing where he was or how he got there. He looked over to see a brown-haired boy looking particularly bored. He paused in the middle of the aisle, seemingly waiting for him to walk away to another part of the store. The two awkwardly stared at each other until the brunet finally spoke up.
"Are you gonna…hello?"
The blond could tell that the person in front of him didn't have much experience with talking to people his age. Still, he was persistent to figure out who he was.
"Well, can you talk?"
He stayed silent as his head drooped.
"Are you lost or something? I'm sure your mom or dad can't be far from here. Probably just in another part of this giant store."
He smiled at the brunet, a clear contrast from his look of aloofness. The blond didn't exactly know why he'd have either of those things, but at least he was nice.
"Name's Yosuke by the way. And yours?"
He simply waved hello, forgetting the latter question.
"Well I gotta call you something."
The silent kid looked around the store for something to say as a name. He spotted a lone teddy bear in the corner of the aisle that was seemingly misplaced by some absent-minded child.
"Teddie?"
"There we go. At least that's one word."
The two boys walked out of the aisle to the rest of the store. One happily following the other's more casual stride.
"The sooner we find your family, the sooner you can get out of here! Can't wait to tell the guys back home about this!"
10 years later…
Only a single pair of bunk beds were left in a room filled with boxes. Still, a teenage boy with brown hair was oversleeping that morning on the bottom bunk. The blond boy on the top bunk, however, wasn't as lazy as the other. He quickly climbed down the ladder and stared directly at his target.
"Wake up already, it's moving day!"
He knew his older brother always hated it whenever he woke him up like that.
"Teddie, why…"
"Mom said everything else is already in the car. And unlike our last summer vacation, I am not going to carry your luggage again, Yosuke!"
"Ok…"
With half-lidded eyes, Yosuke forced himself out of bed and yawned before carrying one of the lighter boxes. "I already set my alarm. You didn't need to wake me up."
"No you didn't," Teddie responded as he picked up a box of his own.
"How do you know?"
Teddie looked at Yosuke with a smug grin. "I checked while you were asleep."
"Stop going through my phone! This is the 6th time I've had to change my password!" Yosuke rolled his eyes.
After a few trips back and forth, every spot in the trunk was practically filled. All of Teddie's boxes were labeled in marker.
"Boys, is that everything?" their mother called.
"Yeah, mom!" Yosuke answered, to which Teddie pointed out, "You missed one."
"Oh, thanks."
As they finished loading things into the car, a question still lingered in Yosuke's mind: "Do you remember anything about Inaba? I know it's been like, what, ten years since then? But you gotta remember something about it."
"Nope!" Teddie declared weirdly confidently. "But it's probably a nice place if yours truly was born there!"
Yosuke knew his younger brother always hated the loud noises of the city, so at least he'd get some enjoyment out of such a small town. He figured that was probably because he spent the first few years of his life there, the day they met all those years ago still fresh in his mind.
The drive to Inaba was fairly dull. Teddie would always listen to the songs saved on his phone whenever there was a long car trip. He was listening to the songs through the headphones Yosuke allowed him to borrow.
"We are living our lives…"
Teddie was whispering the lyrics again, bouncing and fist pumping in his seat as he did so. It easily drowned out their parent's talk about snow tires or something like that. The entire trip was filled with nothing but listening to their parents' conversations, Teddie's singing, and reminiscing old memories through photos of friends from his old school. This went on until…
"Teddie? Teddie…?"
"…to guide your way through-what?"
"We're here."
The beds were already set up when they got there. They were admittedly a bit smaller than the bunk beds at their old house, so Teddie would need to be careful not to toss and turn at night. Though all of the boxes in the room that needed unpacking served as a nice distraction from that problem.
"You can unpack whatever you want, I'm just gonna unpack what I'll use soon."
It was times like these he was thankful his little brother had all of his boxes labeled because of the sheer amount of things he either crafted or found. He always found these things to be pretty jarring. Although, every little thing Teddie unpacked held some sort of memory. A deck of cards, a clay model dragon, a birdhouse, his knitting kit, a magnifying glass, and of course…
"Did you need to bring all of the gag glasses you made?"
"Never leave home without a pair!"
Teddie set up his half of the room surprisingly fast. He hopped onto his bed as Yosuke walked over to the balcony. Placing his head in his hands, a thought arose that he didn't say out loud.
"So this is where Teddie was born, huh?"
The rest of his thoughts were spoken as he moped about any highlights their new place of residence had to offer.
"Inaba…No Game Center, no Wild Duck Burger…"
"Heard the Beef Bowls here are good though!" Teddie tried to cheer him up. It was all in vain though, as Yosuke simply put his head down and sighed.
"If the most you can say about this place is how good the food is, that's when you can tell there's nothing to do here…"
"Well at least now I can finally get some peace and quiet!" Teddie proclaimed with a sense of relief, firmly slamming down a pillow. The sun was setting, and Yosuke continued his conversation on his own bed.
"Still, out of all the places we could've ended up. Think we'll find your biological parents here?"
Teddie surprisingly scoffed it off. "You know that only happens in movies. I don't really care where they are as long as I have all of this!" He motioned his hand around the room, showing off his various items, the sunset on the balcony, and of course, Yosuke himself.
"Yeah, chances are they wanted to move out of this dump too. Kinda feels like our lives have come full circle, hasn't it?"
Teddie plopped his back full force onto his bed, feeling the satisfying bounce of the springs. "Eyup! And all it took was dad getting a promotion!"
Yosuke did the same, but in a much less blissful and more exhausted sort of way. "Ugh, that's right, we get back to work at the end of the month!" Really settling in how nice it felt to not have to worry about work for the entirety of September due to moving. Just as quickly as he laid down, Teddie sprung back up.
"Welp, I'm going to go help set up the fridge. Do you want anything?"
"Nah, I'm good."
Teddie ran out the bedroom door, eager to see what else his hometown had to offer, leaving Yosuke to continue moping until a thought dawned on him.
"Working at the exact same location where we met, huh?"
That memory of meeting Teddie for the first time still fresh in his mind, he had the smallest smile on his face when it all started flooding back to him.
"Maybe we were always meant to end up here."
Even if "here" meant a small town where he'd actually have to try to find something to do during his free time.
