Normally Cornelia wouldn't have bothered to ask permission, but this was her best friend's brother. She could definitely not just date him without Taranee giving her the green light. Girlfriends before boys. Always.
Cornelia was waiting impatiently for Taranee to pick up her phone, getting more nervous with each beep.
Finally the noise that indicated someone picked up came through the cell phone: "Hello?"
"Oh hey Taranee, it's Cornelia."
"Hey Cornelia, what's up?" Taranee asked cheerfully.
Cornelia drew in a long breath. "Well you see…" she started and then didn't know what to say anymore. "Well I wanted to ask…" she tried again, and could then hear Taranee laugh lightly.
"You wanted to ask if you could go on a date with my brother?" Taranne said confidently, and Cornelia's mouth dropped - good thing Taranee couldn't see this.
"Well… yes… How did you know?" Cornelia asked suspiciously. "My brother asked me the other day if he could ask you out or if it was too weird for me," Taranee started, "I told him he should go for it."
Cornelia smiled, a little of happiness, a little of relief. "Thanks Taranee, it means a lot". Cornelia could almost hear Taranee's smile through the phone, "hey, as long as you are happy Corny, and my brother seems to like you a lot."
Cornelia smiled and thanked Taranee once more before hanging up.
Around 6:45 pm Cornelia was running around trying to figure out what to wear. Now she had known Peter for some years now, and knew that wherever they went it would be rather casual - that was his style. But even a casual Cornelia still looked like a fancy person, which made it so hard for her to settle on an outfit.
She ended up settling on a pair of beige skinny jeans, a black short sleeved shirt with a silky, rosy short sleeved cropped shirt on top, which she paired with a pair of strappy black heels.
She was still busy fixing her hair and makeup when the doorbell rang. "CORNELIA!" Lillian shouted, "THE DOORBELL RANG!" Cornelia shouted back at her sister, "WELL THEN GET IT YOURSELF!" - "I CAN'T, I'M BUSY!" Lillian shouted again.
"MOM!" Cornelia yelled, "CAN YOU PLEASE GET THE DOOR, I AM NOT READY!"
"You should have thought about that when he gave you a time to be ready for," Elizabeth Hale said as she passed her daughters door with a basket full of laundry, "besides I am little preoccupied with everyone's clothes here." She paused and turned to her daughter, "you look great darling, if you need some more minutes just invite the boy in and ask him nicely to wait." She winked and kept moving.
Cornelia sighed in defeat and ran down the stairs to the bell that rang again, she opened the door with a big smile which fated instantly.
"Caleb."
The brown haired boy turned around and looked slightly surprised at Cornelia. "Oh hey…" he managed to get out, "I came here to get some things I forgot." He said while looking at his shoes.
"Oh," Cornelia said and widened the door, "come in."
"CALEB!" Lillian ran towards the brown haired boy who gave the little girl a big smile. "What's up little monster?" They started chatting a bit and Cornelia went up to her room. Suddenly everything felt wrong and confusing. She had not expected to see Caleb here and she definitely didn't like the idea of him being here when Peter came to pick her up.
Her phone flashed and she looked down to see a text from Peter.
Hey Cornelia, so sorry, running 10 minutes late. Had to give sis a ride. Can't wait to see you. - P
Cornelia smiled and wrote back No problem - see you soon! Before turning back to her mirror. Peter was so sweet, and he had everything in a guy that she needed right now.
Caleb had finally detangled himself from Lillian and made his way upstairs. What he had left was a couple of school supplies, things he could easily have gotten new of, but he had desperately wanted to see Cornelia. They didn't talk anymore, and it was much harder for him than he had expected. He reached the top landing and walked over to her room to see her standing by her vanity mirror and fixing some parts of her hair.
She looked absolutely radiant and some part of him wished that he could touch her face. But he settled for what he could do.
"You look nice." She turned in surprise and looked at him with a look he couldn't decipher.
"Thanks," she said silently and pulled a strand of hair behind her ear - the very strand he wanted to touch. He was about to tell her that he missed her when the doorbell rang.
Slight panic crossed Cornelia's face, but only for a moment. Then she moved to her bed where her purse and jacket were laid out. "Where are you going?" Caleb asked curiously but also with wariness.
"I'm…" Cornelia pursed her lips as she put on her jacket and flung on her purse on her shoulder. "I am going on a date."
Caleb was struck, he had not expected that. He had not expected that at all. A fierceful strike of jealousy ran through him. "Oh…" Was all that left his lips as he stood stuck in the doorframe.
Cornelia moved slowly past him, and then turned right before the stairs. "Uhm, I guess you know where you left whatever you're missing.. I haven't moved any stuff around since…" she trailed off. "If you wanna stay with my parents and Lillian for a while, I will be gone till 10 pm." And with that she ran down the stairs and out the door, where Caleb heard an engine start a couple of seconds later.
He didn't know how to move. It was like he had frozen into the very spot he was standing. Cornelia. Date. Another guy. He had absolutely no right to feel jealous, he knew this. He had pushed her away. This was entirely his own fault. But he had never thought that these feelings for her would linger. Not at all.
"She's on a date with Peter?!" Irma almost choked on her sip of soda, and Taranee raised an eye at her. "Yeah… so?"
Elyon sighed, "I really wished they would have worked it out."
"Why?" Will asked, "I mean sure Caleb is nice and all if you look aside from the fact that he made Cornelia's life miserable," she looked sternly at her girlfriends, "but Cornelia is our best friend, we cannot look aside the fact that he did indeed hurt her". She said matter-of-factly. "So good for her, Peter is nice".
Hay Lin sighed, "yes he is nice, he is very nice." Her friends looked oddly at her. "I am just saying, we also like Peter, and we don't want him to get hurt. I just don't think Cornelia is over whatever her and Caleb have for each other."
"What 'hate'?" Taranee raised an eyebrow. "Look Caleb and Cornelia made each other awful people to be around. I think it is just positive that she won't be sulking at home tonight." She played with the straw in her drink, "and my brother is a big boy, even if he and Cornelia don't work out, he will be able to handle it."
"Cornelia and who won't work out?" The girls turned around to see the boys standing at the entrance to the Silver Dragon. It was Nigel who had asked the question. Taranee blushed slightly at the sight of her boyfriend, but mostly because right behind him was Caleb.
Caleb looked at Taranee with as little emotion as possible, "the guy she's on a date with tonight?" Taranee nodded awkwardly. "Well who is it?" Matt asked as he sat down next to Will and gave her a kiss. "My brother," Taranee answered truthfully.
"Good for him!" Alex blurted out, and Elyon shot her boyfriend a dirty look. "Ah… sorry man," he said as he looked at Caleb slightly.
"What?" Caleb snorted. "She can go on dates with whoever she likes." He tried to come across as if those words didn't stab his insides.
Will looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Yeah, we were just saying it was nice that she is finally somewhere else than the skating rink." Caleb shot her an unthankful look. He knew she hadn't forgiven him for making a mess, and honestly he didn't know if he had forgiven myself.
"Well that's good for them, but what should we all do tonight?" Martin asked, trying to change the subject, but Irma wouldn't let it go. "Oh come on, am I the only one who sees how dumb this all is?" She slammed her hands down on the table. "You," she pointed at Caleb, "and Corny are like made for each other. And the sooner you realise it the better for the rest of us!" She threw her hands up in the air dramatically.
"Aren't you the one who told her to get over me cause I wasn't good enough for her?" Caleb mumbled asked her, and Irma rolled her eyes. "So what?" She looked at him with a serious expression, "I obviously didn't think you guys would ever get to this point! I thought you would fight harder to be together."
Caleb slumped his shoulders and turned on his heel, "I don't think we ever will be together Irma." And with that he left.
Sorry about the re-upload. Somehow I managed to delete the actual chapter 8 when I was updating them, and put this as chapter 8. But it is of course chapter 9!
Stay tuned for Cornelia's date with Peter!
