A Christmas Prince Moment
"So," Ned asked, staring at Peter across the cafeteria table, scooping his spoon through his chocolate pudding cup. "Has Tony Stark adopted you yet?"
Peter let out a pitiful moan at Ned's words and face planted onto his arms.
"I'm going to go ahead and take that as a solid no," Ned popped the spoon into his mouth.
Peter lifted his head enough to glare at his best friend. "This is getting ridiculous Ned."
"How many times have you tried to give Tony the adoption papers?" Ned asked as he dipped his now clean spoon back into the pudding cup.
"I'm losing count," Peter grumbled. With a sigh, he straightened back in his seat and pouted at his befriend. "Every time, something interrupts us."
After a long discussion with May, the Parker family had decided to ask Tony Stark to adopt Peter. Ever since Tony had found Peter masquerading as Spider-Man, the two of them had been barrelling towards a father-son relationship. They had now known each other for over a year and Peter spent nearly five days a week at the Tower. Petr loved spending time with Tony; learning from him, hanging out in the lab, watching movies together. Tony had stepped into the role that Ben had left behind. While nobody could ever replace his parents or Ben (and not that Tony ever tried to) it was nice to have a father figure in his life.
Together, Peter and May had started the adoption paperwork (and there was a lot of paperwork). When they were all ready, Tony only having to sign them, Peter had to work up the courage to give them to him. Peter had been nervous but he had managed to scrape enough up courage to hand them to Tony during their next lab session. Only, Tony hadn't been there. He had forgotten about a meeting and had rushed away before Peter had been able to stammer out a hello or goodbye.
Every attempt since had failed.
There were the constant interruptions;
"Mr Stark, I have something –"
"Tony, We need to – Oh, Hi Peter. I forgot you were coming over today. Do you mind if I steal Tony for a moment?"
(and Peter couldn't say no to Captain America. Especially when he had that expression on his face that Peter had seen too many times in the PSA videos.)
There were the forgotten documents that needed signing;
"Mr. Stark. There's something I have to gi-"
"My apologies for interrupting Peter. Boss, Mrs. Boss is on her way down and has reminded you about the documents that needed signing."
"Hold that thought kiddo. I have to get these signed. Can't let Pepper know I forgot otherwise there will be hell to pay."
(and Tony had only just managed to get them signed before Pepper entered and he was whisked away to a meeting.)
There was also the "Avenger's assemble" interruption:
"Mr Stark. Will you please –"
The rest of his words had been drowned out by the sound of an alarm. Then Tony was shoving Peter towards the exit, telling him to suit up.
(and Peter ended up forgetting to ask Tony after the battle but he blamed that on the drugs they had him hooked up in the Med Bay after a particular nasty hit knocked him out and broke a couple of his ribs).
Then there was the time that Peter had forgotten to bring the adoption papers with him. He had been so furious with himself that he ended up abandoning the training session that was scheduled and instead went patrolling.
"Let's face it," Peter sighed to Ned. "The universe doesn't want Tony Stark adopting me."
Ned frowned. "Dude, don't say that. It's going to happen."
"When?"
"Today," Ned said confidently. "After school. You're going to march up to Tony Stark, put those adoption papers in his hands and live happily ever after."
Peter gave Ned a doubtful look.
"You just have to believe," Ned grinned.
"How many Netflix Christmas movies have you been watching?"
"Dude, my mum loves them," Ned pouted. "They're so bad that they are actually good."
Peter sniggered but couldn't blame Ned. His aunt had started streaming them too and Peter often found himself huddled next to her on the couch, a bowl of popcorn between them.
Ned leaned across the table and gave Peter a serious look. "This is your Christmas Prince moment."
Peter both loved and hated that he understood that reference. "Right. My Christmas Prince moment. Adoption, here I come."
Ned let out a cheer that echoed around the cafeteria and Peter suddenly felt emboldened. This was his moment. No more. He was going to ask Tony Stark to adopt him today.
By the time the final school bell had rung, Peter was keyed up and ready. He bid Ned a goodbye and hurried out of the school. Happy was waiting for him out the front and Peter slid into the backseat of the car. When peter was buckled in and they had started moving, Peter drew out the thick, yellow envelope that held the adoption papers carefully in his lap.
"Happy, does Mr. Stark have any meetings today?" Peter asked.
Happy looked at him in the rear-view mirror. "No."
"Are there any emergencies?"
"No."
"Is anybody dying?"
"All the time kid. But nobody Tony knows."
Peter nodded. "What are the odds of an alien invasion happening this afternoon?"
"It's New York kid. I'd say it's pretty high," Happy gave him a look. "What this all about?"
"I just need to ask Tony something," Peter said. "And I don't want there to be any interruptions."
Happy was silent for a moment. "You get someone pregnant?"
"What?! No! Happy!" Peter spluttered.
"Just checking," Happy grunted.
The rest of the trip was made in silence as Peter mentally ran through his speech and Happy periodically checking on him in the mirror. When they finally parked at the Tower, Peter was ready. Happy walked with him, taking him to the elevator and up to the pent house, Peter clutching the yellow envelope tightly in his hands that it crinkled.
"Hey Kid," Tony greeted him from the living room. Tony was on the couch, a tablet on his lap. He grinned at Peter, watching as Peter all but ran to stand in front of him. "How as school?"
"Fine," Peter dismissed. He took a deep breath. "Mr. Stark, Will you please –"
"Hey, our resident spider is finally back from school," Clint interrupted with a bright grin as he swept into the room. "Finally, the Switch tournament can begin."
"Please, don't act like you're going to win," Sam scoffed from the couch.
Peter had been so focused on Tony he hadn't noticed the others in the room. His heart dropped in his chest. No. Oh no. Sam, Clint and Natasha were on the couch while Steve, Bucky and Bruce were in the kitchen, making snacks and drinks.
"You think you can beat him?" Natasha asked, smirk in place.
"Oh, I know I can beat him," Sam grinned wickedly. "I'll even kick your ass too."
"Should we bet on that?" Natasha smirked back.
No. No they were not going to take this moment away from Peter. Not today. Not now.
"What do you think, Stark?" Clint asked. "You want to –"
"ADOPT ME!" Peter yelled.
The room went silent as every eye turned to him.
Peter licked his lips and threw the envelope at Tony. The man caught it before he could hit him in the face. His eyes were a little wide as he stared at Peter but his gaze was serious.
"Pete –" Tony started to say but Peter cut him off.
"No! I've been trying for weeks to give you those adoption papers and every time something has interrupted us but not today! I will have my Christmas Prince moment! I want you to adopt me. You're my dad. Not by blood but in every other sense of the word and I love you. You're already an amazing dad and you do so much for me and I want to be your son because I love you and don't want to lose you so will you adopt me please?"
Peter was panting by the end of this speech, staring at Tony. Okay so he had planned on yelling his speech at Tony. He had planned it on being heartfelt and passionate and in private but it was too late now. His heart that had been pounding in his chest started to slow as Tony stared at him. Was keenly aware of every eye on him but it was only Tony's gaze he cared about.
"I love you too, Peter," Tony said.
Peter shoulder's sagged with relief. "Yeah?"
A smile spread across Tony's face. "Yeah, kid. Come here."
Peter stumbled to Tony, dropping down on the couch beside him, automatically curling up onto Tony's chest. Peter was vaguely aware of the others moving away to give them some privacy.
"Sorry I yelled it at you," Peter mumbled into Tony's chest.
Tony chuckled, wrapping his arm around Peter's shoulders and hugging him closer. "You've been taking lessons from Pepper to get me to sign things, huh?"
Peter sniggered before his laughter fell away. He tilted his head up to look at Tony. "I meant what I said."
"I know," Tony smiled. "and I'd be honoured to adopt you Peter. If that's what you really want."
"It is," Peter said firmly.
"Okay then," Tony agreed.
Peter beamed and face planted into Tony's chest again, hugging him tightly around the waist. They stayed like that, both basking in the joy that started in their hearts and spread all the way down to their toes.
"Just one thing, kiddo," Tony asked, breaking the moment.
Peter gave Tony a curious look.
"What did you mean by Christmas Prince moment?"
Peter grinned. "You're going to hate this. FRIDAY, can you please play A Christmas Prince."
Happy reading :D
