Chapter 11
It was late at night, on a school night. I was sleeping so soundly next to Charlie. I heard our door open slightly. I didn't bother to open my eyes. I knew it had to be one of the kids. It was. It was three kids. All three of my girls.
"You asleep Mama?" I heard Anna say.
"Mmhm." I mumbled softly.
"Mommy!" Isabelle shouted.
I snorted myself awake startled by her voice.
"Mmm...what is it?" Charlie groaned.
"It's nothing babe...go back to sleep."
He rolled over on his stomach placing his arms under his pillow.
"Anna...Isa...Mira...it's late go back to bed." I whispered. "Daddy and I told you that you'll have to learn to sleep in your own beds now go on."
"It's Bry though Mommy." Mira piped in.
"Bry?"
I quickly got up and put my robe on. I darted for the kids room. Like little ducklings they toddled behind me. I flicked the light on. The covers of the bed had been kicked off. Bryan was in the middle of a nightmare. He was crying and groaning to himself. I gently tapped him.
"Bry... Bryan!"
His eyes shot open.
"Mom!"
He wrapped his arms around my neck. I held tight to him.
"It's okay...you're okay...oh sweetheart it was just a nightmare."
"I want my Daddy!"
"Alright...girls get back and bed please."
They did as I said. Despite that Bryan was almost in the 1st grade, and he certainly weighed more than he did as a baby; I carried him on my hip back to our room anyway.
"I was lost...and no one could find me...and I kept yelling but no one was hearing me...I tried to find you but no one would help me."
He got choked up as he tried to explain his nightmare to me.
"And...and... I had a new mommy that looked just like you...but you were mean and...and...my feelings are hurted!"
"Oh Bry...hey...it was all a nightmare...its all over now."
I put Bryan on our bed. He crawled over to Charlie.
"Mmm...girls what did your mom say about staying in your own bed." Charlie grumbled.
"I'm not sissys Daddy...its me Bryan."
"Oh...Bry...why are you in our bed?"
"Cause I wanted my Daddy!"
At the sound of his voice Charlie sat up and Bryan hugged him. He looked at me and I shrugged.
"Says he had a nightmare..."
"Oh...well don't worry son...I'm here."
"And I had a new mommy only she was mean!"
"A new mommy? You know that could never happen Bry...ever...I love your mother too much."
Charlie kissed the side of Bryan's head.
"Go back to bed little man, you got school in the morning."
Bryan nodded and leapt from our bed.
"Goodnight Mommy...goodnight Daddy."
"Night baby."
"Night son."
I closed the door ajar behind him. I then got back in bed with Charlie.
"Charlie?"
"Hm?"
"Where do you suppose he got that notion into his head to dream about it...that he had a new mother that was mean?"
"I don't know honey...go to sleep."
I sighed and put the side of my face to my pillow.
"I'm not a mean mother...am I?
"You? Heck no...you are so far from it."
"Then I must have done something to frighten him then."
"He's a little boy Har...I used to have nightmares about my own parents all the time...like them leaving me or that I never had any."
"Any about a new mom being mean?"
"Har... I'm tired...I have to be at the station by eight...let's drop it okay?"
"Okay."
I sighed and rolled over on my side away from Charlie. It was quiet for a bit.
"Why not a new father?"
"Harmione go to sleep."
Mommy and Daddy sent me back to bed. The entire walk back was filled with confusion. I entered the room and got back in bed next to my sisters.
"Bry?" I heard Mira whisper.
"Yes."
"How come we can't sleep in mommy and daddy's bed?"
"It's just a grown up thing sis. They want the bed all to themselves once you get bigger."
"Why?" Isa sat up and questioned.
"I don't know...that's just the way it is."
"Daddy gave me chocolate milk and told me to name the good things about the world when I had a nightmare. Why didn't you get any milk Bry?" Anna piped in.
"Cause that's for little kids Anna, I'm practically all grown up."
I sighed.
"What's wrong bubba?" I heard Anna ask in the darkness.
"Nothing...its just my dream felt so real...and like deja vu."
"What's that?" Mira asked.
"What's what? Oh, deja vu? It's when you feel like something's happened before. They teach you that in school."
"Why?" Isa prompted.
"Sheesh...do I have to teach you little kids everything...just go to sleep."
I pulled the covers up over them and attempted to fall back asleep myself. The next morning at school the strangest thing happened. Daddy told me all about my diabetes. It took me a long time with my speech impediment to learn how to say it right. I know to use my pen, eat a piece of candy, or go to the nurse if something was wrong. Though on this particular day, something was funny.
I was sitting in Mrs. Watson's class. She was calling roll.
"Makenzie?"
"Here."
"Dylan."
"Here."
She only called our first names, but we were in alphabetical order by last name on her sheet. I was in the L's. It would take her a little bit to get to me. I was always nervous before she called my name. I wanted to be alert and not miss her calling me. I didn't want to be the center of attention. I also was very insecure about how I said the word here. I never wanted it to sound funny. It was a strange fear, but it was my fear. I also had a fear of reading in front of the class. I have trouble with words.
As I sat there the room was quiet, but I began to hear whispers from nowhere. I couldn't make out what they were saying. It was just an annoying whisper that got louder and louder. Everywhere my eyes darted the whispers grew. I couldn't hear myself think. My head began to pound. I grew very timid and scared. I thought it was my sugar. Although hearing voices was new to me. It made me more frightened.
"Bryan!" Mrs. Watson yelled. I gasped. The entire class laughed.
"I called your name three times...kindly sit up and pay attention."
The moment she said it I fell backward. The entire class laughed again. They thought I was being funny. Something was wrong though. My head made me dizzy. The voices wouldn't stop. I covered my ears in an attempt to block them out.
"Bryan!" I saw Mrs. Watson race from her desk over to me.
"Be quiet children!" She screamed. "That's enough!"
She gently touched the top of my head.
"Bryan...Bryan, it's me Mrs. Watson...Kelly go get Mrs. Turner."
"Yes mam."
Mr. Turner was our school nurse.
"Johnny go and get Mrs. LeMay across the hall."
I thought maybe I was having a seizure but I wasn't. It was just my head. It hurt so bad I began to cry.
"Ssh...its alright Bryan...do you have your candy with you?"
She began to check my pockets. She unwrapped a candy and held it at my mouth.
"You wanna sit up Bryan, and eat this piece of candy for me?"
I couldn't sit up. The entire room was spinning and the voices began to drown out her own voice. I heard a ringing as if I were deaf. I closed my eyes tightly.
"Bry! Bry It's mommy!"
Upon hearing her voice boom through the whispers I opened my eyes again.
"It's okay honey...you're okay."
My classmates now had a deep concern for me. Mrs. Turner entered to check my vitals. My sugar was stable.
"Well it's not his sugar Mrs. LeMay, you might have to take him to the doctor."
"I'll go there now! Come on Bry...come on sweetie."
She picked me up and placed my head on her shoulder.
"Mrs. Watson can you watch my class."
"Of course...I'll put everything in his take home folder."
She quickly got my things together. She went to my cubby and got my backpack. After filling it and getting it zipped up she put it on my Mom's right shoulder.
"Thank you." Mom replied breathlessly.
I don't remember the ride to the doctor. I must have fallen asleep to cancel out the noise of the whispers I was hearing. I met with Dr. Payton. He has been my doctor since I was a little baby. He found nothing wrong with me.
That night at the dinner table. I felt as if I was a pink elephant in the room. No one wanted to say anything. They didn't want to upset me I guess. The voices did cease for a little while.
"Anyway, they checked his sugar three times...his A1C was normal. They took some blood. They even swabbed his throat and checked for signs of head injury." Mom explained to Dad.
"They check for drop in blood pressure?" Dad replied back as he ate his supper.
"Yeah...it was normal too."
"Daddy..." Mira chimed in. "I don't like carrots."
"Carrots are good for you Mirabelle...besides Mommy made them...so you know they're good."
"They smell funny."
"Mirabelle..."
My sister Mira was so picky at what she ate. Every night it was always something. It was hard on my mom to cook decent meals for me and Daddy because of our sugar when Mira hated just about everything she cooked. Later that night my sisters were playing princess dress up or something. Mommy ran me a bubble bath. She even put in my shark toy I love to play with so much. I heard my sisters laughing and screaming.
"Girls!" Mom yelled. "Don't be screaming like that!"
I gathered up the bubbles and made a beard. I laughed splashed in the tub.
"Roarrrr!" I yelled excitedly. Sharks don't really roar but mine does. I splashed him about up and out of the water as if he were a dolphin. I kinda wish I had some action figures for him to eat. I laughed and made my shark at the bar of soap.
"Mmmm...soap bubbles...its my food..."
I tried to get his teeth to chomp down on the bar of soap but he wasn't really staying. His teeth after all were just plastic.
"Haha haha!" I giggled and made a small cave under the water with the shampoo bottle. I pretended it was a submarine. I had my shark attack it. My laughter stopped as soon as I heard the whispers again. I gasped and dropped my shark in the water.
"St...stop...stop! shut up!" I covered my ears. I could still hear it.
I screamed and began to cry. Why was I hearing these voices. The bathroom door came open and Dad rushed in.
"Bry! Son! What's the matter?!"
I cried loudly reached for him. Dad grabbed a towel and removed me from the tub. My head was bursting.
"What happened!?"
He began to dry me off.
"My head hurts!" I cried.
"Okay...okay I understand..."
I didn't know what else to do so I just cried; which made my headache even worse.
