Summary: Marinette loved her parents but hated "Sabine Cheng" and "Tom Dupain." How could she when they murder her actual parents and take on their names and identity? I don't own Miraculous Ladybug. I was reading stories in which Marinette's parents believe Lila's lies and it got me thinking about what if they weren't her parents. Gabriel may have used other magic to try and bring his wife back to life. What if Sabine and Tom got caught in that and die? To cover his tracks, Gabriel used a spell to give two of his helpers Sabine's and Tom's memories and appearance. The fact they believe Lila's lies and acted on them was an attempt to get Marinette akumaitzated.
Marinette cries as her parents were lowered to the ground. Their bodies had finally been found and DNA tested. Chloe hugs her. Luka pats her shoulder. Gina rubs her back in comfort. It was over. After three long horrible years, it was all finally over. Her parents were avenged. She cast her mind back to three years ago when it all started,
Back then to everyone, the Dupain-Chengs were the perfect family. A gentle father, a beautiful mother, and a kind daughter. They own the best bakery in Paris. Their daughter had high grades, was kind towards others. The family was very loving. The parents loved their daughter and she loved them.
Only Marinette knew the full truth. Her beloved parents were already dead. Their murderers had taken their place with some sort of magic. She can still remember that scene as clear as day.
Marinette hurries quietly through the Agreste Fashion House. Her parents had catered an event and hadn't returned. Her calls went unanswered. She had a very bad feeling about it. That was why she went out in the middle of the night. She had been lucky that there was no security, and the doors were unlocked.
Seeing the light on in a room, she walks in and then quickly dodge back behind the door frame. Two people were standing over her parents. Her parents were laying a puddle of blood, their blood she realizes with a silent gasp.
"Damn it. The ritual didn't work."
"I told you it won't work."
A third voice said, "This means that we will have to proceed with our other plan. Dispose of these bakers, where no one will find them" The way he spoke as though her parents didn't matter chills her.
"What about their daughter? Won't she call the police and tells them the last place she saw her parents were here?"
"Then, kill her too." Marinette's blood ran cold.
"No," The first voice, a woman, said. "It is not right. She is still a teenager. She is the same age as my daughter would have been if she had lived."
"Honey."
"You promise us after this last job you will let us go. You promise us that you will give us a daughter."
Suddenly Marinette's clumsiness kicked in, and she knocks over a pile of dummies.
"What was that?" Marinette flees. Thank god her flats were worn and made no noise as she ran.
She didn't know how she got home without getting caught, but she did. Laying in her bed, she felt something she had never feel before, pure hatred. Her parents had been killed for a failed ritual, killed because they were considered unimportant as bakers. This "Hawkmoth" will pay. She will personally rip his wife's head off like her mom's and stabbed her through the heart like her dad.
The next day, when she walks down to see her "parents, "she knew that her parents were dead. She will avenge them, and no one will stop her.
The new school year was very fruitful. Hawkmoth reveals himself to the public. She receives the Ladybug Miraculous to fight him. Adrien Agreste joins. She pretends to have a crush on Adrien Agreste to get information. Her "best friend" Alya proves useful with her recklessness for a story. All she had to do was hint at her "crush" and Alya was doing everything she can to found out about Adrien. The missing wife was interesting, to say the least. The Miraculous Grimoire was yet another clue. She was thrilled to found it belongs to Gabriel Agreste. It was another clue. Her partner, Chat Noir protests, so she pretends to drop it. But she never stops looking. After all, while he may not be Hawkmoth, that doesn't mean he may not know something about it. Not to mention he may have other dirty secrets that she can use to ruin him. She knew he had played a role in her parents' death since their replacements were his senior designers, who retired shortly before her parents' death. She had the power as Ladybug. Why not used it?
She pretends to become friends with her class. (Yeah right. Like she will ever trust them after they abandoned her to Chloe. One of the last things her parents had taught her before they die was you forgive but you never forget.) She needed to get away from her "parents". Since they were always pushing her to make friends, she did so. Not to mention with all the akumatizations, she can use them to track down Hawkmoth. However, they were becoming more of a hinder as time goes on. They were demanding more and more times and commissions. They never paid her and demanded that she just dropped everything to help them. She didn't like that. She starts to make friends outside the class. They were actually true friends. They stand by her, even when Lila returns with her lies. Through that may be because they see through her lies easily. Honestly, she was starting to wonder about her class's level of intelligence.
Then, the whole thing with Scarlet Moth happens. Once again, the school was useless. Her "parents" didn't support her. (She hears them on the phone later that night (through a system that she had rigged along with the house) saying that they have to treat her as though they believed in Lila's lies and punished her. They were supposed to get her akumaitzated. Those two didn't even protest!
The next months were torment, with her parents' punishment (the fact they used her parent's faces was what torment her. She had to keep remembering herself they weren't her parents) and her class' bullying. Ms. Bustier did nothing. Along with the high rate of akumaizations in the class, all of the hindrances they were causing, and all the bullying they have done to the other classes, she comes to the conclusion that they were her enemies. She wasn't the only one. Since the teachers weren't doing anything, the other classes decided to take matters into their own hands and protect and avenge themselves. They exclude all of Ms. Bustier's class from school activities. Some of the more vengeful ones take it further. She did the same. Her mental health wasn't the best and she needed to take revenge on someone. (It was also for practice against Hawkmoth.) She knows it was wrong but after the way, they treated her what did she cared?
The next time, Alix tries to trip her down the stairs, she let it happens. As she falls, she makes sure to drag Alix down with her. A little maneuver and she ensured Alix fall first and she had landed on her legs. This causes Alix's leg to be broken since Marinette makes sure to land on top of them. The other classes rushed to Marinette's aid since she was the victim and their friend. They also scolded Alix for tripping Marinette and said she got what she deserved. They helped Marinette to the nurse and grudgingly helps Alix too. A few weeks later she wasn't sure who exactly but somehow Alix was tripped, and her legs were fractured when her crutch cause a cart of books to unbraked and crush right into her. Alix would never be able to skate as well as she didn't before. Luckily no one else was seriously injured by the cart.
Kim had shoved her and Aurora into a locker when he overheard them discussing how stupid Lila's lies were. He had tried to kick their downed forms, but Aurora had fended him off with her parasol. They weren't the only ones who he used his physical strength to bully. He was dropped from his sports teams when the other members started having trouble working with him. Marinette overhead someone talking about how he wanted to strip Kim of his awards. However, he couldn't without a legitimate reason like Kim having taken illegal drugs. Marinette's mind whirl.
During one of Kim's last competitions, Marinette sneaked illegal steroids into his water bottle. She had confiscated them from a drug dealer on one of her patrols. The majority had gone to the police, but she had kept one small packet for use. Marinette smirks as Kim was discovered by the drug test after winning. Despite his protests, he was stripped of his medal. Kim's reputation was ruined now. No college will take him.
For Nino, she switched all of his discs with old ones that don't work before a big gig. (She sold those discs for a decent price. She used the money to treat Chris and the twins when their parents paid her to watch them. She had revealed Nino and Alya's dumping of babysitting duty on her to their parents. Alya and Nino were grounded for months and their allowances are given to her. They didn't trust their elder children to babysit anymore and decided to just have Marinette babysit with the expense coming from Alya's and Nino's allowance.) She then proceeds to switch all his entries to film festivals with mature and inappropriate movies. He was banned from all music festivals.
She collaborated with someone else's plan for Max. Her part was to duplicates several new computer programs that Max was creating. That person then modifies one into a virus that wipes memory. He then used Max's computer to send it to Marinette's tablet with homework for Ms. Mendeleiev. When she submits it, it wipes out the files for the entire school. When the Education Board sends a person to investigate, they trace it to her tablet. She tearfully tells him about her class bullying her and Max's technological ability. The look of horror on his face when the investigator confronts him nearly made her smile. Nearly, she had to keep in her act. They look at the programs he was creating and see the one that was similar to the virus. Combine that with the other classes' testimony, it was enough to get Max suspended for cyberbullying. He was eventually expelled. A bonus was that Ms. Bustier and Damocles were replaced due to abuse of power and taking bribes. She had to be more careful in the long term, but in the short term, ensuring chaos makes it easier to cover up everything.
Rose and Jukela just got caught in the middle. She didn't even have to do much! Rose had developed a new perfume with Lila's "advice." She wasn't sure of the details, but it was apparently very flammable and toxic. It caught on a spark in Rose's apartment's kitchen causing a large fire and toxic smoke. Fortunately, no one dies or was seriously injured. Her family had to move, but no one was willing to rent to them when they heard why they were evicted. Marinette sends the news report and other videos of Rose bullying the other classes to Prince Ali, who broke off his friendship with her.
Jukela had kicked Luka out of Kitty Section on Lila's advice. Marinette had genuinely cared about Luka and he had cared about her in return. She had never planned to use him in her plans of revenge, but when the opportunity falls into her lap, how could she resist the temptation? She had introduced him to Jagged Stone after Luka broke down in her arms after being kicked out. Luka was successful in his career. The best revenge was success. Oh, and bonus Anarka wasn't thrilled about the way her daughter treated her brother or acted in school. From what Luka told her, Anarka's and Jukela's relationship was now very cold and that wasn't even going into the relationship between her and Luka.
Marinette and her friends sent Lila's interviews to all the celebrities. Within a matter of days, Alya and Lila were getting sued by every celebrity. Alya's recklessness was also revealed. Any chance of a career in journalism was ruined for Alya. Alya's parents were furious. It turns out they had tried to stop her attempts to run into akuma battles as well as discouraged her from hanging around Lila since they saw through her lies. However, Alya kept disobeying them and now they had multiple lawsuits to deal with.
Lila was revealed to have done this before. She had driven one student to commit suicide. Her mother lost her job as a diplomat. It was decided until Lila was sent back to Italy to her grandparents' farm. The most advanced technology there was a landline phone. That was the plan until Ladybug discovered footage of Lila taking an akuma. Unfortunately, she didn't know much about Hawkmoth. Curses. Oh well, at least Lila is sent to a juvenile detention center in Italy, and she and her friends don't have to deal with her lies anymore.
Ivan, Mylene, and Nathaniel were spared. It turns out they had discovered Lila's lies too and confronted her. Lila had threatened them too. Ivan and Mylene had each brought her some expensive fabric and placed it in her locker with a note explaining everything and apologizing for not helping her. Along with the fact they hadn't bullying her, she let it go. Nathaniel had like her made friends with the other class. He admits that he had known but after overhearing Lila threaten Ivan, he decides just to keep his head down. Marinette tells the other classes. The other classes confront the three and after verifying their stories, left them alone.
Chloe and Sabrina were also spared since they had tried to defend her even if that was only due to Chloe not liking Lila taking her spot of Queen Bee. Chloe had been trying to improve herself mostly by becoming an ice queen. She had apologized to Marinette explaining that she was jealous that as a child, Marinette was constantly allowed to go home early with her parents, while she, as the mayor's daughter, wasn't allowed to. Marinette explains that was because she had physical health problems.
Before they moved to Paris, the Dupain-Cheng family works as bakers for a wealthy family. An insane business rival wants revenge on the head and didn't care who got in his way. The entire household was poisoned. Tom only managed to avoid it because he was away at the time for an errand for their employer. He got delayed returning home due to a snowstorm. Sabine had a miscarriage and was rendered infertile. Marinette's nerves had been damaged, and she had problems controlling her body sometimes. Thankfully as she grows up the nerves healed somewhat, and she was just clumsy. Her parents through worried. That was why she was sent to College Dupont and despite Chloe's bullying wasn't pulled out. The physical risks outweigh the mental ones at the time. (They had been planning to transfer her this year if her health improved. But they were killed before they could.) Chloe was shocked and her apologies become much more frantic and sincere. She even paid for physical therapy for Marinette and one of the top neurologists in the world to look at Marinette. The healing power of the Ladybug Miraculous has help Marinette recover more than modern technology could ever hope to so the neurologist told her that her nerves were mostly healed, although she may still be prone to clumsiness sometimes.
Adrien was the easiest through little effort on her part. She hadn't been the only one he had told to take the high road. Someone had actually recorded that and posted it on the internet. He was ripped apart by most people and his popularity decline, especially when Lila's previous actions were revealed. Her chance for her own revenge falls into her lap one day.
One night, she was returning from exploring some of the seedier regions of Paris to tried and find a counterspell for the spell that turned her parents' murderers into them, when she saw Chat Noir detransform. She had hidden in the shadows, thankful for the outfit she had made to blend in, not just in this area but also in the shadows. Her eyes widen as she saw him becoming Adrien Agreste. Her hand reached for the pocketknife she carried for protection. She wanted to kill him, not just for the way he treated her as a civilian, but also as a hero. However, she stopped. A quick death would be too easy. She knows that what he values most was his reputation as a "sunshine boy" and Chat Noir's ability to act with no consequences.
She put her plan into action during the next attack. She actually managed to finish the attack earlier than usual, by ignoring Chat Noir when his goofing off sends him flying. She didn't stay away for their usual fist bump. She had swung off saying in a rushed tone "Yikes, look at the time. I have to hurry if I wanted to make my date." Marinette disappeared, leaving a stunned public and furious Chat Noir behind. She let the rumors simmer for a few days. During these few days, Chat Noir tried to claim she was cheating on him. She rolled her eyes. Fortunately, she managed to influence Nadja, by saying that there was no proof of Chat Noir and Ladybug dating. After a few days, she swings past a popular reporter and his news team calls her down. He asks her about her date.
Ladybug "blanches". After visibly debating with herself, she sighs and said: "Well, since he isn't in Paris anymore, I guess I could tell you a little. I have a boyfriend."
"But what about Chat Noir? Are you cheating on him?"
"No! We're not dating despite his claims and the Ladyblog's lies! If anything, my boyfriend would be cheated on if I was dating Chat Noir, which I am not!"
"Could you explain that?"
"I have been dating my boyfriend since before I become Ladybug. Hence why I always reject Chat Noir." Everyone makes an "Ahh" sound. "I am not that type of woman."
"What do you mean by he isn't in Paris anymore?"
Ladybug makes a sad face. "His family recently moved because of the akuma attacks. The date I mentioned was the last one." The females in the crowd make sympathy sounds. "That is why I am going to fight even harder so that we can be reunited. Now if you will excuse me," she swings off.
Paris was swooning over her story. It was so tragically romantic, two lovers tore apart by a villain and one fighting to get him back. LadyNoir shippers and fans die down rapidly, much to Ladybug's delight and Chat Noir's dismay. Chat Noir didn't like the fact people were now scolding him when he asks Ladybug out or flirting. Everything blows up when Ladybug scream "I am not going to date you! I am still trying to recover from my boyfriend leaving! What part of no don't you understand?!" Ladybug run off to finished fighting in tears. Thank god the akuma was stunned and didn't resist. Ladybug then releases the akuma and purifies it.
Ladybug continued to play the desolate heroine, who was trying her best to be strong and keep fighting to get back her lost love. She skillfully pushes away Chat Noir's advances by saying she wasn't ready to begin dating. She announces that she planned to stay single for at least a year to stay loyal to him. The women rally to her. Chat Noir was increasingly scolded for his romantic advances as Ladybug clearly wasn't ready or interested. Eventually, he stopped showing up to battles. New heroes, such as Mellona (Bee Chloe) and Viperion (Snake Luka), arise. Marinette has increased contact with Master Fu. She started to subtly manipulate him into making her the new Guardian. She felt slightly guilty about it. This wasn't how her parents raised her. Then again, being good people hadn't saved her parents from being killed.
Eventually, she was made the new Guardian. The first thing she did was tracked Chat Noir down and reclaim the ring. He threw a tantrum, which she made sure was recorded and show on media. This led to a massive investigation in which Adrien's endangerment of civilians, especially when he threatened to quit during Siren, was revealed. Ladybug was furious when she was shown footage of that. She made it very clear if she had known this. There were charges brought up, but Gabriel managed to get him off on house arrest. No one in Paris was happy about that. Gabriel's was now facing a massive loss in business.
Her former class (what remains) begs for forgiveness (she transfer) from not just her and the other classes. However, she and everyone else didn't give it. They had reaped what they saw, and she had no time for distractions. Her revenge was in the final stages. She had no time to be doing those favors for them anymore. Not to mention she didn't want to be dragged with them with their reputations now. This was as good a time as any to break it off them. She had her own problems to deal with anyway.
Her false parents had received new orders from Gabriel to steal her designs and send them to him. She had a distinct idea of why. Gabriel's designs were started to lose their luster. Sales were going down. He must need new ideas. Marinette starts to hide her designs, posting them on her Instagram, or just destroying them after taking a picture and saving them in an encrypted file. She started making sketches of other famous designers' old pieces and placing them in her rooms. She hoped that they will be given to Gabriel, who will use them, and he will be sued for design theft.
Ladybug had, using the excuse she was worried that Adrien will be akumaizted, had the Agreste Mansion monitored by the Miraculous Holders. Eventually, Skydancer (Crane Mirelle) recorded an akuma butterfly leaving the mansion. Ladybug led a team in the middle of the night to investigate. They managed to find the Peacock Miraculous, which confirms it. Ladybug set a plan to capture Hawkmoth at the next battle. Some of the Holders would watch Hawkmoth while the others transform and fight the akuma. The ones who were watching Hawkmoth would record him detransforming. The recording is sent to the police, who went to Agreste Mansion to arrest Gabriel. When he transforms to tried and fight the police officers, the Miraculous Holders, who have been hiding and watching nearby, raced to help. With the full team, Gabriel was easily defeated. Adrien had heard the fight and raced down. The police explained to him what had happened and take him to the police office.
Marinette had another plot going on after this happened. She uses Altehea, Owl kwami, and the kwami of Truth, to undo the spell on her parents' murderers. She did this while the bakery was at rush hours. The moment the spell ended, Marinette had launched herself at them demanding to know who they are and where her parents were. She was pulled away by some of the customers. Others restricted "Sabine Cheng" and "Tom Dupain." Marinette collapses and had a mental breakdown (which she causes as she let everything she had been dealing with caught up to her.) The police were called and all three were taken to the police office. With the revelation that Gabriel is Hawkmoth, evidence of the failed ritual which Gabriel had recorded, and the timed security footage of what happened, the imposters were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, identify theft, and emotional abuse.
There were some issues concerning whether or not Marinette had helped Hawkmoth since her "parents" had. Fortunately, Marinette had thought ahead. She used a phone call to call Ladybug (a clone she had prepared.) Ladybug herself had testified at the trial. Luckily for Marinette, a neighbor had installed cameras for security a few months ago. She had discovered that they faced her balcony. Using that knowledge, she had used the Mouse miraculous to duplicate herself. In the middle of the night, Ladybug had knocked on Marinette's trapdoor. Marinette had then appeared sleepy-eyed. Ladybug had handed over a bottle filled with a bright liquid (slime gel with glitter.) She had said in full hearing of the cameras "You have upheld your end of the bargain, now I will uphold mine. This potion should undo the spell on your "parents"." Marinette's face had twisted into a scowl. "I know they aren't your parents, but I don't know what else to call them. Have them drink it and a few hours later the spell should wear off. If it doesn't work, you know how to contact me." That absolved Marinette of any involvement with Hawkmoth.
Marinette, in court, tearfully revealed what she had seen that night of her parents' death. In the end, she tearfully added she didn't think anyone would believe her. She had taken a risk telling Ladybug. Fortunately, Ladybug had been tracking Hawkmoth's activity and believe her. Marinette then proceeds to tell the court how they had helped Lila and how she had overheard them talk to Gabriel about stealing her designs. She provides a "recording" (made by extracting her memory and using a spell to convert it to a video.) That add attempted design thief onto Gabriel's list of charges (not that it was that serious compared to terrorism.) Marinette herself got community service for a month for stalking and court-martialed therapy. There was no mark on her record.
Marinette's clients, especially Jagged Stone really hated Marinette's "false parents. (Everyone in Paris was now calling that.)" Given the fact Marinette had been sending him a lot of her designs for months, he had a better idea than most how much stress and fear she had been feeling. He persuades/pressure Marinette to get therapy. Marinette agrees. Luckily Jagged Stone's connections give her access to a therapist who values confidentiality.
The therapy led her to realized something about herself. With her revenge complete, her anger had dissolved. Now she had moved on to the third stage of grieving, bargaining. She still missed her parents. She would do anything to have them back, even using magic. She realized that with horror as she played with the Cat Miraculous one day. It was just for a second but the temptation to use the Cat and Ladybug Miraculous and bring back her parents was overwhelming.
She throws herself into finding a way to release the kwamis before the temptation return. And it did, more and more often. Fortunately, the kwamis help her. When they succeed, every kwami was thrilled. They all left shortly after partying.
Tikki and Plagg had asked her why. She smiled sadly and replied, "I don't want to risk myself using your power to bring back my parents."
Now three years later, Marinette had succeeded. With her parents' funerals, she was at peace. The bakery had been sold and the money put in trust for Marinette to use. Chloe had invited her to live with her in the hotel for a few months until she turned 18. Shortly after her 18th birthday, which was celebrated with a ball in the hotel, Marinette board Audrey's private plane set for New York City with Chloe by her side. She wears a blood-red dress she designs. The world of fashion was bloody. She will survive. After all, she survives Hawkmoth, Chat Noir, Lila, and her false parents.
Marinette knows her parents were dead because the magic used didn't create an exact clone. She also knows from their mannerisms.
Marinette's stalkerish behavior was an attempt to find Gabriel's weakness. It was better to be arrest for stalking than let Gabriel know she was on to him.
Anarka and Luka know Lila was lying because of the story she told about Jagged Stone's cat.
Gina too had noticed changes in her son. However "Tom" had managed to convince her it was because of the Akuma attacks.
The part about Marinette's damaged nerves comes from a promt on Mlwritingprompts in which Marinette was hit with the Cruciatus curse, damaging her nerves.

Marinette sighs as she got out of the thrift store. Her community service was done. The owner had been sympathetic to her parents' murder and had offered to just let her sit and design, but she refused. She said her parents had raised to take her punishment. Also, she didn't mind helping. The owner gives in. The work wasn't hard and enjoyed helping people find fashionable outfits from secondhand clothes.
Marinette was feeling a little hungry from the work, so she purchased a kebab from a street vendor. However, when she went to pay, the owner said it was on the house. She tried to insist, but the owner said it was payment for her helping Ladybug. Ever since Gabriel's trial, it has been the same everywhere. She was always given discounts or free things for helping Ladybug, or out of sympathy for her parents' death. After all Tom Dupain and Sabine Cheng, in a way, were the only true causalities of Hawkmoth.
Munching on the kebab, she walks down to the river. People smiles and wave at her, recognizing the girl who had risk herself by spying on Hawkmoth's helpers and son. She leans down to look at the river. The soothing sound of the river calms her mind. She feels at peace until she hears a loud commotion behind her. She didn't turn until she hears "Hawkmoth's son." Marinette whirls around to see Adrien Agreste.
He no longer looks like the sunshine boy model as before. His face was covered with bruises and scars. His hair was lusterless and all over the place. He was skinny, not as a model, but more in a starving way. He was being restrained by several officers.
"Marinette!" He sees her and begs with his eyes. "Please you have to help me."
"Quiet!" The officer tightens his grip.
Adrien yells out in pain and continued to plead "You like me, didn't you? Help me and we can be together!"
Marinette couldn't help it. She laughs coldly "Oh Adrien, I don't think you understand. "She walks closely, her face adorned with a smirk that could match Chloe's when she was in her peak as a bully. "You were in the way. Not just in mine, but also Ladybug's. You were just a small nuisance to me. I was just pretending to be in love with you after all. But Ladybug," Marinette shakes her head. "It was different for her. You were consistently in her way, in akuma battles. How many times was she forced to defend you in battles because you were too busy fooling around? How many times was she forced to abandon the akuma to help citizens just because you were throwing a tantrum over the fact, she was more focused on Paris's wellbeing than yours? Which, by the way, since you had a miraculous, you could have care of yourself. I have to comfort her multiple times when she broke down because of your sexual harassment and disrespect towards her.
"Disrespect!? I have always respect milady," Adrien protests.
Marinette snorts "So that is why you made all those misleading comments about your relationship? Why you were always forcing kisses on her? The way you always touching her when she told you not to. Not to mention all the time you refused to help because she wants to be a decent woman and not cheat on her boyfriend." Marinette's face fills with vicious satisfaction. "You and that monster of a father you have deserved every bit of suffering." The growing crowd agrees." WHy should I help you?
"You own it to me after you helped imprisoned my father and destroyed my life!"
"Your father was insane!" Marinette screams. "Most people get therapy after the death of a loved one. Or in the most extreme cases, like me, they get revenge.
