Chapter 1: Tough Times

The kingdom of Gurumes, once beautiful and peaceful, was now being mined by countless men, searching for a treasure many only dreamed of: blood rubies. Ever since these gemstones had been discovered, the king had ordered the land be mined and torn up in order to get as many of them as they could scrounge up. This, of course, was a huge hindrance to the farmers, who were unable to plant or harvest their crops with the constant digging being done.

Of course, a young girl wasn't too willing to just roll over and let this happen. "They can't do this to us..." she muttered as she opened fire with a slingshot.

The rock she fired nailed a construction worker right in the head. KLONG!

"You little punk...!" he fumed. "Somebody grab the brat!"

The girl tried to run forward, but a woman, presumably her mother, held her back.

A soldier stepped forward, and was about to hit the little girl with the butt of his gun, but it was caught by an older man: the girl's father.

"She's only a child. Leave her be!" the father boomed.

"Hey, it's in the job description," snapped the soldier. "So leggo o' my rifle, peasant!"

He wound up to give the man a punch, but the large man effortlessly flipped the soldier so that he fell flat on his back in the mud.

"Pick on someone your own size," Penny's father snapped as two other soldiers came out, rifles ready.

"What's going on here?" asked a voice; it came from a tall, brawny soldier who stepped forward.

"M-major Domo!" one soldier exclaimed. "That vermin attacked me!"

"Is that so?" asked Major Domo. "Looks like one of the lambs wants to be a lion, then."

"If that's what it takes to protect my daughter," Penny's father replied. "The king's already destroyed our crops and our..."

Major Domo took up a large dirt clod, then squeezed it in his hand until it was crushed. When he opened it, it revealed a beautiful red gemstone.

"The blood rubies beneath your worthless land are the only crop that interests the king," he remarked.

"I don't care what you're after," Penny's father glared. "So far we've just stood by while you've turned our farms into wastelands! But no more; you're not destroying this country any longer!"

The other people cheered in agreement.

Domo gave an evil grin. "You're bold, farmer. Such boldness deserves a reward!" he said, as he tossed a blood ruby towards him.

Before anyone could blink, Domo punched Penny's father in the face, stomach, and then punched him hard enough to send him landing on his back!

This display of brutality dealt a massive blow to the townspeople's rebellious spirit. Penny's father managed to roll himself onto his back before collapsing in exhaustion.

Domo chuckled to himself as he walked off. "This time I'll let it slide; but you'd better stick to raising flowers instead of your voice," he told Penny's father while he left.

Penny shot the man a glare. I'll show them. They're messing around with the wrong kid!

MEANWHILE, IN CASTLE GOURMETH...

"YOU CALL THIS DRECK 'FOOD'?!" a voice boomed as a plateful of food fell to the floor.

"Not just me, everyone calls it food," replied the robot servant.

The man at the table let out a groan of dismay. This was King Gurumes, and he was currently very, VERY hungry. But then again, he wasn't exactly looking very human to begin with.

"It doesn't make sense..." he groaned. "This horrible emptiness inside of me! Each meal is more sumptuous than the last...but none of them satisfies me!"

That's when the two double-doors opened up, and in walked Major Domo. Next to him was a younger redheaded woman named Raven. She had a look of guilt on her face, but tried to hide it when in the presence of her leader.

"Ah, Raven!" exclaimed King Gurumes. "You bring good news?"

"Indeed, sire," Raven replied, trying to keep a stern face. "We've found the location of the remaining Dragon Balls."

"Good. I should have five by then. Anything else?"

"We've been having some trouble." replied Raven.

"Eh? What sort?" asked Gurumes.

"Treasure hunters." answered Raven.

Gurumes waved a hand dismissively. "Bleh. Fine. Go!"

"What's in it for us?" queried Domo.

"Life. And rubies; all the blood rubies your grubby mitts can carry!" the king replied.

Domo smiled at that, but Raven still held a guilty look.

"You think I'd be full with all this food...but no! I need all 7 balls to wish this hunger away!" Gurumes wailed as he slammed the table. "Look at me! I can't even fit into any of my own robes! I'M FAAAAAAT! BRING ME THE DRAGON BALLS...NOWWWWWWW!"

Far away from the grief-stricken kingdom, in a mountain valley, there lived two young brothers who weren't fully aware of the role they were going to play in this tale.

The first boy was about 12, with spiky black hair, a pair of blue gi with a white sash that held a red staff on his back. The other boy was a teenager of 16, with longer black hair, wearing some black gi with brown armor pads on the shoulders. And both boys had tails!

"I know you can't really talk to us, Grandpa," said the first boy as he prepared to head out. "But wish us luck. We'll catch a big fish for you, promise!"

"Let's just hope we can catch a big enough fish, little brother." stated the second boy. "Now c'mon. Those fish aren't going to wait around while you chatter!"

"OK, big bro!" the first boy smiled, as they both headed out the door.

Soon, the two of them were leaping and jumping through the forest, laughing all the way.

The two brothers bounded through the woods, swinging on vines and leaping from branch to branch. "Look out, fishies! Goku and Raditz are coming!" Goku bellowed.

Raditz couldn't help but chuckle at his brother's enthusiasm, as they both jumped into the lake. Swimming through the water, they noticed a fish as big as a VW bug racing right towards them.

Both quickly jumped put of the water, with the fish doing the same, lunging right at them. That's right when the boys jumped up, kicking the fish in the head, killing it!

"Looks like the fish is the only one sleeping!" Raditz laughed.

ELSEWHERE...

An odd-looking motorcycle was cruising down the path. It was driven by a blue-haired teenage girl in a magenta dress and blouse, labeled on the front "BULMA". In her blue hair, she wore a red bow which secured her braided ponytail. She glanced up to see a large airplane cruising overhead.

"What's a plane doing out here in the wilderness?" she asked herself. She reached into her sidebag and pulled out a flat, circular device, then pressed the little button on top. The circular screen showed a small red triangle, as well as a blinking yellow dot several inches away from the triangle.

"Ugh...those goons better not beat me to it..." she grumbled. "According to the radar, the Dragon Ball should be up ahead. It's mine! But to get it, I may have to play nasty..."
