Prologue:

Aquila

In both worlds, another factor, kept secret, aided Regulus Black's decision to defect from the dark side. Throughout his Hogwarts years, he had been secretly seeing a lovely and fair witch his age named Amelia Bones, a Hufflepuff from the well respected politically grey inclined House of Bones, whose brothers are both proud members of the Order of the Phoenix.

In the original world as told to us by JK Rowling, Regulus Black died young, unmarried, and childless leaving the Black family without an heir and future head. Putting it in a place of near extinction, those Blacks that remain are either passed the age and/or unable to further the line, or those who have already married out of the family with a completely different family name. While he was indeed seeing a young witch his age called Amelia Bones at the time, he decided not to tell her anything, not because he didn't trust her, but because he feared for her safety. To Amelia, the love of her life just disappeared without a trace. Not knowing what happened to him, she stayed loyal and did not give out hope that somehow, somewhere, he was still alive, and would eventually come back. This Amelia held onto her hope her whole life not marrying anyone and single-handedly raising her niece Susan, rising up in the ranks of the ministry to be the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement in hopes that she would be able to find Regulus. She was sadly murdered by Voldemort in her own home in mid-July 1996.

In this alternate world on the other hand, Regulus was unable to hide his discovery and plans of destroying the Dark Lord from Amelia. Unable to convince him to abandon his self-imposed mission and knowing how dangerous it is, Amelia decided to marry Regulus in secret before he took on his mission. Sadly, just as Amelia feared, Regulus indeed never returned from it alive. Heartbroken, Amelia threw herself into her job as a minor clerk in the Ministry of Magic, not telling anyone of what had happened to her husband just as he made her promise to him before he left, terrified that she might get pulled into conflict and attacked by Voldemort and his followers from what she knew.

It was only a few weeks later that she realized she was pregnant with his child, from Walburga Black basically invading her home after noticing a branch connected to and stemming out from Regulus' place in the magical records of the Black family tree in Grimmauld Place, where she stayed in the rest of her pregnancy, with Walburga breathing down her neck and making sure that the next Black heir stays healthy.

While Walburga didn't approve of Amelia's relationship with her now deceased son and took all opportunity she could to show her disapproval, she never actually attacked Amelia in any way due to her pregnant state and because, as Walburga put it, while the Bones family wasn't an ancient noble house, it was well-respected and pure enough for Walburga to hold back her tongue. It also helps that the Bones family holds sway and power in the Ministry.

After finding out about both of her brothers' and their wives' murder, she had a premature birth, the baby was born one month before term, but was thankfully healthy. So, in late January 1980, the new Black heiress formally named Aquila Regis Black, of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, named after her father and his family's house, the only daughter of the late heir Regulus Arcturus Black, son of the late lord Orion Black III and dowager lady Walburga Black, and his wife Madam Amelia Bones, was born. With Amelia naming her daughter's godparents to be Sirius Black and Andromeda Tonks née Black, just like what Regulus would've liked, Amelia's relationship with her mother-in-law remained cold and stilted. Considering who her choices for godparents were, even if they were made to honor her late husband's wishes, they were still thought by Walburga to be passive-aggressive moves against her.

Following the unfortunate events of her brothers' deaths, the responsibility of managing her family falls to her. Seeing as the two other Bones' that remain aside from her were her newborn daughter and her infant niece, Amelia decided to retain her maiden name. As she and Regulus, expecting from the worst of his mission, never had it magically changed to attune her to the Black family magic more, and distancing her away from her original connection to her family magics, as most brides are often expected to do when marrying into another family. Her lack of a magical name change gave her the right and authority to be able to take over the Bones family.

When the news of Voldemort's fall reached her a year and 10 months later, in Bones Manor where she now lives with her daughter and niece, she rejoiced with the two babes, glad that they would be able to have a normal happy childhood without the threat of war constantly hanging above their heads. But she was also worried about Voldemort's possible return, remembering what Regulus had discovered that led to his death and determined to not let him die in vain, Amelia was set to not only ensure that her husband's name be cleared from the mud of being an ex-death eater but also let the wizarding world know of his heroic death by defying Voldemort, without of course letting the public know about his discovery, and she could only think of a person that could help her with the task, Albus Dumbledore.

Amelia told Dumbledore the entire story, confirming his suspicions of Voldemort having created something as vile as horcruxes, suspicions which he got from examining the boy-who-lived, Harry Potter's cursed scar. But, nonetheless, despite the terrible knowledge, Dumbledore happily spinned half-truths of Regulus' secret contributions to the war hiding, clearing his name and getting him an Order of Merlin 1st class award for his heroism.

Apparently, according to Dumbledore's grand retelling of events to the public, Regulus was some sort of vigilante wizard, who bravely joined the death eaters to spy on them and attack them from the shadows. He later came across some valuable information which he immediately acted on, striking a massive direct blow against Voldemort himself. But he was sadly killed by the dark lord for his actions. Amelia was a bit impressed by Dumbledore's not-lie, but not-truth either, it tells the public everything and nothing at the same time. The public immediately ate it up considering Dumbledore's vouch.

Being busy with her job in the ministry and managing the Bones family especially the busy years after the war, Aquila is usually left with her grandmother, Walburga Black to babysit until her unfortunate death in 1985. While not the kindest or sweetest grandmother, Walburga doted on her only grandchild, in her own slightly insane way, and was especially proud when she was revealed to be a metamorphmagus at three years old. While not a full metamorphmagus like her older cousin Nymphadora, being unable to change parts of herself into that of animals and other creatures or switch into a different gender altogether, Aquila is still able to change her hair and eye color, and change her features as long as they remain human, which is still a formidable trait. Being the first child of the Black family who actually bore the name Black to receive the Black family gift in centuries, Aquila unknowingly solidified her place as heir to the family.

After Walburga's death, she is usually dropped off to be with either her godmother, Andromeda and her family, or her great grandfather Arcturus Black, who instructs her on how to be the next head of the Black family. Aquila was instructed by various tutors as was the norm for any heir to an ancient and noble house. Growing up with the basic knowledge of magic, languages, politics, and everything else a member of a traditional pureblood family should know. With this, Aquila's love for magic, books, and learning was born.

Throughout her life, she is accompanied by a loyal house elf called Kreacher, whose devotions to her late father, Regulus, were transferred to her.

Amelia raised Aquila and her niece, Susan, together. But while Aquila is dropped off to her Black relatives whenever Amelia gets too busy, Susan is dropped off to her godparents', the Abbott's place to hang out with her best friend Hannah. Both Aquila and Susan were also instructed by Amelia on what was expected of a witch from the Bones family, but as Susan will be the one inheriting the family, Amelia put more time into instructing her how to manage it. Aquila didn't really mind as she understood the reasons why. But, while she and Susan got along well, they still weren't as close as Susan was with her best friend, as they were just too different from each other. She gets along better with her cousins, Dakota Malfoy and Heloise Lestrange who she often sees in Black family gatherings and visits. While she also gets along with Draco, she just has the insane urge to smack some sense into him at times out of annoyance.
