The compound was quiet as Wanda Maximoff used the communal kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee with a splash of milk but no sugar. Wanda had not experienced such a profound silence since she had moved to the United States. The tower where the Avengers had lived when she had first joined had always had a buzz of activity to it, no matter the hour. It had also been surrounded by the ever present bustle of the City that Never Slept.

But the compound had a great deal of land around it and then a national park right next to its border. Despite having multiple buildings which had dormitories for the staff, the compound had significantly less people than the Hydra compound outside of Novi Grad had had. Something about the design of the buildings also made the mental presences of people fade into the background so long as they were not in the same room as her, and even then, they seemed muted slightly.

That was a kind of quiet that she had not experienced in years, not since she had volunteered for Baron von Strucker's experiments. She couldn't help but wonder if joining Hydra had even been worth it. Thanks to those experiments, she finally had the power that she was always meant to have, and they had done much to cleanse the world its impunity. Yet at the end of the day, Stark still lived and Pietro did not. She had lost everything while Stark continued on as if he were not at fault for it all.

Even with an investigation led by three different agencies, Stark looked like he would soon be cleared of anything concerning Ultron. She had been so careful in placing all the pieces of the Baron's plan. She had managed to do nothing beyond giving Stark a little scare before allowing him to take the specter with its implanted coding. She had let him live, coldly comforted by the knowledge that just killing him would not have been enough. She had to make sure that everything he had built was destroyed alongside him.

It had all gone so wrong.

And on nights like this, she couldn't help but fume about the unfairness of that.

At least she had managed to turn the rest of the Avengers against Stark. Not that it was exactly hard. It wasn't like Stark was really a part of the team in the first place. It wasn't even as if the Avengers were truly a close-knit team like they pretended to be to the public either. They were just a bunch of loosely acquainted misfits desperate to see the world as they wanted it to be instead of how it really was.

The green beast had run away right after the battle with Ultron. That wasn't Wanda's doing, no matter how perfect it was. Romanoff had forcefully triggered the beast, and as protective as the creature was, he had taken himself and the man he sometimes masqueraded as off to who knows where.

The alien had likewise left soon after the battle. Wanda knew from the Baron's dossiers on the Avengers that Thor spent more time off planet than on it. A little thing like a change in base and roster probably didn't even register to him. It was only a pity that he hadn't succeeded in killing Stark when he had tried. She loved watching the memory of the alien choking Stark while everyone just watched.

Rogers, Barton, and Romanoff were perfect for her needs. Each of them only saw in her what they wanted. She didn't even have to twist anything with her powers. Rogers wanted her to be a copy of himself, a girl who just wanted to defend her homeland, while Romanoff and Barton assumed that Wanda regretted anything that she had done while working with Hydra. They were both blinded by their own egos. Wanda had joined Hydra because she had believed in them, both for the power that List had promised her and the way that Hydra wanted to change the world.

Things had gotten out of hand with Ultron, of course, because the stupid murder bot hadn't focused on exterminating just the riffraff. He had been determined to erase all humans, not just the ones that didn't deserve the label. The Avengers had been useful for taking care of him.

Deciding that she felt a bit peckish, she pulled out the fixings for a sandwich. She spread mashed avocado on the bread before layering slices of zucchini on it. After a careful sniff that left her still unable to identify it, she placed a slice of cream colored cheese over the zucchini. Then she piled on a generous helping of roast beef cut from what Wilson had made for dinner last night. As a final measure, she cut the sandwich in half (down center like a civilized person instead diagonally like Natasha always did).

Wanda was not certain if she fully trusted the new additions that had been added to the Avengers after they moved to the compound. Wilson might be tolerable. He followed Rogers around like a well-trained dog and didn't ask too many questions. Those were good traits for a mutt to have. Rhodes wasn't around a lot, as he was still active with the American Air Force as well as being the military liaison to Stark Industries. Wanda hated him on principle just for the latter.

Vision also wasn't around a lot, which was an actual disappointment. His mind was the most complex one she had ever touched. It felt like it contained infinite possibilities. She loved the feel of it under her power, even if Vision tended to block her out as soon as she touched it. If he was around more often, Wanda was certain that she could overcome that shyness. Maybe she could even build up a rapport with the robot. Maybe she could even override whatever coding made Vision ask so many questions about her work with Hydra and Ultron before drifting off to check on Stark.

There was an idea.

Stark had taken her family from her. It would be fitting if she took his away, too. She could slowly convince Vision to view her in a romantic light, and reject Stark at the same time. Regrettably, Rhodes was probably too far gone to convert to her way of thinking. His loyalty to Stark ran too deep to be redirected to Rogers or herself without raising any suspicions. Compounded with his unfortunate complexion, he wouldn't be of any use to her.

After settling the blanket she was wearing like a shawl more securely, she picked up her mug of coffee and the plate with her sandwich. She could take both back to her room.

She smiled to herself as she imagined the unfortunate accident she was going to have with her powers the next time Rhodes was present for a team training session. Rogers would not realize that anything was amiss when she used her magic against the armored man. Perhaps she shouldn't kill Rhodes. If he lived but was so grievously injured that he couldn't pilot the armor anymore, then he would be forced to allow someone better suited to take over.

"You are just as vile as reported," a voice said with a British accent from the shadowy corner of the commons area.

Wanda spun towards the area, dropping her coffee mug and the plate with her sandwich at the same time. She hadn't sensed anyone, that damnable design flaw of the compound muffling too much. The Indian man was leaning casually laying on the lounger in the corner with his arms crossed over his thin chest. He had on an all-black business suit. Between the outfit and the shadows that the lounger was in, the man was just barely visible in the light of the full moon outside, muted and diffused by the night fog coming off the river as it was. His green eyes glowed similarly to how hers went red when she used her powers. She felt a shiver of dread work its way up her spine.

"You shouldn't be here," she told him heatedly. "This area is for Avengers only."

"Then you shouldn't be here either," he replied as he stood up., just as cool as she had been hot. Wanda flushed with rage. How dare this dirty little mongrel suggest anything about her? The man tisked at her. "No sense arguing over what we both know to be true. You may have fooled your precious parade of idiots, but thankfully, they are not the only organization in the world."

"Who are you?" Wanda demanded. She slowly shifted her weight to the side, hoping to get at a better angle to summon the large desk near the door leading to the hall. It mostly served as a dumping ground for junk mail. Rogers wouldn't mind if Wanda broke it to crush this invader.

"I'm Harry," he answered with a roll of his eyes. Then he pulled out what appeared to be an old-fashioned pocket watch and flicked its cover open. He frowned briefly before flicking the lid closed once more and placing it back in the pocket of his waistcoat. "I am also running late for something more important than cleaning up after Nazis."

"How dare—"

"Oh, easily," Harry interrupted mockingly. He rocked on his feet. "You see, it's my anniversary, and well, frankly, Luna is prettier than you. Not to mention nicer." He clapped his hands together. The unexpected sound made Wanda jump slightly. "So here's what is going to happen. The international organization that has the fun task of dealing the mundane aspects of this case will be here at any moment. They'll take you into custody and make sure that you stand trial for all those crimes against humanity that you seemed to think you could get away with."

Enraged, Wanda threw her hands out to the sides and then sharply brought back to in front of her. She intended for the desk to her left and the television to her right to crash into each other with the strange man crushed between them. Neither object moved. The man did not look impressed.

"Did I forget to mention that it wasn't a choice?" he asked. "You will be facing the consequences of your actions, sweetheart. You will be doing it honestly, too. No falling back on magical influence or the idea of potentially being useful down the road." Harry gave a satisfied smile. "I hear the trial is set to take place in Berlin. Remind me how Germany feels about Nazis again?"

Wanda could only glower as the room filled with lights and people. In the chaotic shuffle of being arrested, she lost sight of the man who had cursed her so thoroughly. She still vowed that she would get revenge on him just like she would Stark.

She would make them all pay.
