The Color of Your Soul
A Hundred Shades of Blue
Jason Grace had the hugest crush on Percy Jackson.
Not that that was really special; every girl and gay guy had a crush on Percy Jackson. Jason was just one bi among many. Nothing special at all. If anything, he was less special. He was kind of a nerd, while Percy Jackson was the most popular kid at school. He was a jock., the captain of the swim team who had been leading their team to consecutive victories since he joined it. He gave their school a good name, put it in the press. Parents, teachers and fellow students cheered for him because of that. So many admirers, how would Percy even notice Jason?
"Ja—ay. I have a surpri—ise for you."
Frowning, Jason looked up from his books to see his stepsister loitering in his doorway. Honestly the best thing that had happened to Jason like ever was when his mom had met Tristan McLean on the set of a movie. His mom had been a huge starlet in the 80s but then her career came to a stuttering halt when she had Jason's big sister and three years later him. The situation was made worse by the fact that their father was a married man who wasn't going to leave his wife. Beryl started drinking and getting worse. Until she met Tristan McLean, who was also a single father and actor, though a far bigger name than Beryl. They shook hands on the first day of shoot and that was when they knew. They knew they were soulmates. Finding him, finding the one who was destined to be there for him, to stand by her side, it was the wake-up call Beryl had needed to check herself into rehab, knowing that her children were safe with Tristan.
Soulmates. Oh, what a fairy tale, what a dream. To one day meet the love of his life and when they touched, their touch would leave colorful prints behind. The prints weren't permanent, but they would always linger for about a day. Colors painting the skin where the soulmate had touched them. Jason knew, he was still young, it might be many, many years before he'd meet his soulmate. Still, he couldn't help but dream of the day. And it wasn't unheard of for teens to find their soulmates.
Like his stepsister Piper; she had found her soulmate not long ago. Annabeth Chase. Probably the smartest girl in the school, maybe even beyond.
"Hello? Earth to Jason? You still with me?" asked Piper amused, waving a hand in front of his face.
"Oh. Uh. Sorry. I just kind of zoomed out there for a moment," Jason grinned sheepishly. "What kind of surprise do you have...? You know I'm not a big fan of surprises."
"This is a good one. Promise," Piper was grinning so mischievously, Jason wasn't sure he could truly believe her. "Just, be ready on Saturday, we're going somewhere."
There was just no way Jason was going to enjoy this. Piper was up to something.

Percy was excitedly bouncing on the balls of his feet. Races always had him buzzing with even more energy than normal. Which was ironic, considering his parents had signed him up for sports teams to get rid of some of the extra energy he had. And that itself had been a bit of a trial and error process. Baseball? No. Basketball? Too short. Running? Ew. But swimming – swimming was it!
So they found a high school with a swim team and signed him up, after they finally found the right sport for him in middle school. He was glad that his two best friends from middle school, Grover and Annabeth, also ended up at the same high school as him.
He worked hard. He worked so, so, so hard. And it paid off. He won competitions, became captain of the swim-team. He was the popular kid in high school. Never thought he'd be. He had been the bullied weirdo in middle school, after all. And now, girls would bat their eyelashes at him in the halls, giggling when he passed because they liked him. He was... beloved.
"Okay! Breakfast of champions. Blueberry pancakes and bacon."
"Thanks dad," Percy grinned broadly as he accepted his plate.
As always, there was a proud sparkle in Paul's eyes at that. Technically, Paul wasn't Percy's dad. Technically, Percy had barely known the man for four years. But he was the only dad Percy ever met, the only one who actually cared about him. His biological father had been a no-show from the get-go and his first stepfather had been... not a good man. And then, after countless school-transfers, he ended up in Goode, where Paul Blofis became his teacher. When his mom and Paul met at a parent-teacher-conferrence, they shook hands – and that was when color showed up on his mom's skin. Finally, she found her soulmate. After all these years. It was easy to grow attached to Paul after that, because the man loved Sally the way she deserved to be loved – and he never looked at Percy as a hindrance or annoyance. Paul had been kind and encouraging even before he found out he was Sally's soulmate. They so easily became a family and Percy honestly didn't think he'd ever been happier. Especially when Paul and Sally went looking for a sport for him.
Right now, his life was pretty close to perfect. Well, there was of course one thing that would make it better and that would be if he found his own soulmate. Sometimes, he'd close his eyes and imagine what that'd be like. But he knew just how long it had taken his mom to find her soulmate, so he wasn't really expecting it any time soon.
"You nervous about today?" asked Paul with a smile.
"No. I mean. Maybe. The usual, I guess. Mostly just buzzing with energy," replied Percy with a thoughtful frown. "I can't wait to be in the water again. And also, Annie is gonna meet her soulmate's family today. She invited Piper to the race and Piper said her parents would come too and they'd go get dinner afterward. She, uh, kinda asked us to be puffers?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Paul frowned at him.
"Join them for dinner. She says everybody loves my mom so she'd be very useful," Percy grinned.
"I'm sure Annabeth is capable of impressing them all on her own," argued Sally as she walked into the kitchen. "The fact that she's their daughter's soulmate should do the trick."
"I know that. You two know that. Annie is fretting," argued Percy. "Especially with her dad away for work. She just wants some... family backup."
"Tell her we'd be delighted to go to dinner with them," Sally smiled at him.

"Mom, dad, Jay, this is... Annabeth," Piper flushed nervously.
She knew there was no reason to be nervous, because Annabeth was perfect and how could anyone not love her? Annabeth smiled and brushed her hair behind her ear. She was clearly as nervous as Piper, which was partially helpful and partially really bad because it only made Piper more nervous.
"Annabeth! It's wonderful to meet you!"
Tristan laughed excitedly and just hugged her and lifted her up in the hug. When he put her down again, Beryl pulled her into a briefer and less invasive hug. Jason simply waved at her.
"It's nice to meet you," offered Annabeth with a smile. "Ah, and these are Sally and Paul Blofis."
"Uh..." Tristan trailed off a little lost as he stared at them.
"They're the parents of my best friend. I'm... kind of living with them, whenever my father is away for work for longer, because I didn't want to change schools again and move to San Francisco with him and my stepmother," explained Annabeth. "And also the reason why we're meeting here. Because my best friend's – ah, there he is! Captain of the swim team!"
"Ah. So that is why our daughter has such an interest in swimming lately," Beryl chuckled.
"I mean, it's important to my soulmate, so it'S important to me," Piper shrugged flustered.
Though her words also flustered Annabeth. And while the four adults were busy being amused by the two girls, Jason was busy staring at shirtless Percy Jackson. This was Piper's big surprise. Going to watch Percy do the swimming. He'd never been to one of these before, because swimming involved Percy half-naked. And that was just a little too much for Jason. He didn't know how to handle all of that, so he had avoided these so far. And yet here he was, staring at Percy Jackson, smiling brightly, nearly naked. He was so handsome. And that six-pack. Was that legal? It shouldn't be legal. Jason could feel his brain slowly dying as all function was shut down.
They sat down with Percy Jackson's parents and watched Percy swim. Thankfully, Jason had his own family between himself and Percy's parents, because the way he was gaping at Percy might give him away and that would just be decidedly too awkward to handle.
Not that what followed was any less awkward, because Tristan and Beryl had apparently been spending the game talking to Percy's parents and when Percy's parents went down to talk to their son and congratulate him for winning, Jason and his family came along. Jason didn't want to, but his feet just automatically followed his parents over to the dripping wet, gasping Percy.
"You did great, kiddo," praised Percy's father proudly.
"Ye—eah, I did," Percy grinned broadly and then looked past his parents, his expression turning more curious. "Ah. Piper's family, right? Annie said you guys would come watching."
Tristan and Beryl praised him with polite smiles and suddenly, Jason stood right in front of Percy Jackson, who was staring at him curiously. That wasn't good. Say something. Anything.
"Good game!" he heard himself say and then awkwardly patted Percy on the back.

Percy had seen Piper's brother before. They had Latin together, but Jason always sat all the way in the front with his friends, while Percy was hanging in the back. Jason was a total nerd, Percy knew that. But like, the super cute kind? With the golden-blonde hair and sky-blue eyes and cute little smiles. Also his glasses were totally looking hot on him.
All that went through his mind when Jason told him "Good game!" like he had genuinely no idea what swimming even was – like calling it a 'game', what a total and utter dork – and clapped him on the shoulder. The dork was cute, was the last thought on his mind before he heard gasps.
Frowning, Percy turned to look at Annabeth, who had her hands over her mouth now. Okay...? When he turned back again, he caught a glimbse of Jason's hand as the blonde moved it away from Percy again. Huh. His entire palm was a bluish purple. Wait. No. That couldn't-
Percy nearly dislocated his neck as he tried to look at his shoulder. There was a blue spot going over his shoulder so he could still see it and he suspected there to be a full hand-print on his shoulder. Immediately, Percy's head snapped back to stare at the cute blonde nerd and without thinking about it, he reached out to pat Jason's cheeks with his hands, just full plams on cheeks contact. When he removed his hands again, there were two amethyst purple hand-prints on Jason's face, nearly covering the bright blush lighting up his cheeks. Turning his hands over, Percy checked and saw that his palms were now a soft baby-blue. Without hesitation did he reach out and poked Jason's collarbone, leaving behind a reddish-purple spot, his finger now a darker blue than the rest of his hand. Percy pressed a second finger against Jason's collar-bone.
"Percy. Percy, stop finger-painting your soulmate," Annabeth noted pointedly.
"But look! He turns purple, I turn blue! We turn each other different colors!"
Percy grabbed Jason's hand and pressed it against his own chest. The blonde squealed like a dying whale, his eyes widening. He left a beautiful cyan-colored hand-print behind. Percy's grin grew as he started bouncing on the balls of his feet. He had found his soulmate. And he was cute.
"Percy," Sally cleared her throat. "Why don't you go get showered and changed? We'll meet you out front. I promise I'll keep an eye on your soulmate, okay?"
Right. Percy was kind of wet and half-naked. He should get a move on. But also this did explain the excessive blushing Jason did – Percy had to make a mental note, because blushing Jason was cute.
"Sure! I'll just be a minute, see you then! Don't lose my soulmate!"
/break\
Jason watched Percy run away, first his eyes caught the blue hand-print on Percy's shoulder and then his eyes trailed down to stare at Percy's ass. Wrong place to look. He could feel his cheeks heating up again. He tried to distract himsefl by looking at his hands, now purple.
"Holy everything," whispered Piper excitedly, tugging on Jason's sleeve. "You're soulmates with your crush, that is amazing! Oh, you two and Annabeth and me can go on double dates!"
"Pipes," interrupted Annabeth amused. "Slow down some. Let your brother digest this."
With a sheepish grin did Piper step back, instead coming to stand next to her soulmate so she could kiss Annabeth's cheek. Her lips left a blue mark on Annabeth's cheek and in return, her lips turned a dark shade of pink. Grinning more pleased now, Piper linked pinkies with Annabeth.
"So, our sons are soulmates now," stated Paul, looking over at Tristan and Beryl.
"Yes, that appears to be the case," Tristan laughed delighted.
While the adults led the way out of the building, Jason was still staring at his hands. "I touched Percy Jackson and he turned my hands purple..."
"You congratulated him for a 'good game' before that," noted Piper with a teasing grin. "You... You know what a swim race is, right? That that's not a game, right? You should know that."
Jason made a small, mortified noise. "He's gonna think I'm a total dumbass!"
"Then why did you say it?" asked Annabeth, one judgmental eyebrow raised.
"My brain died! He wasn't wearing a shirt and he was all dripping wet and smiling at me and how was I supposed to formulate actual coherent sentences?!" countered Jason frustrated.
"Oh boy, you have it bad," Annabeth sighed and shook her head a little.
"Well, at least he's your soulmate so I'm pretty sure he'll excuse both the awkwardness and the dumbassery," Piper chuckled softly to herself, nudging Jason.
Grumbling, Jason buried his face in his hands. Hopefully, Percy was not going to think he was the biggest weirdo. Which, he totally was, at least when it came to Percy Jackon. This was going to just keep being awkward, wasn't it...? He peeked out between his fingers and stared over at his soulmate's parents, pleasantly talking to his own parents. What a way to find out.

As soon as Percy left the building, showered and clothed, he spotted his family – and his new soulmate. With the broadest possible grin did he simply tackle Jason. There was something electric, not uncomfortably so but like a buzz under his skin, when they touched. He slowly trailed his fingers along Jason's bare arms, amazed by the colors he was leaving behind.
"Hi, I'm Percy. I'm your soulmate," offered Percy, aiming his grin at Jason now.
"I... I'm Jason and I swear I know swimming is a race," blurted Jason out.
Oh, his nerd was adorable indeed. Percy's grin grew at that and he grasped Jason's hand, holding it as he turned to follow their families. Jason's hand felt good in his own and he liked the way he could see the colors forming on their hands as they moved. Percy let his hand slip a little to hold Jason's differently, leaving lavender tracks on Jason's skin.
"I've had a crush on you since forever," blurted Jason out, eyes on Percy.
"I... uh... really?" Percy blinked a couple of times, surprised.
"Yes! I mean, who doesn't? Have you seen you?" asked Jason, letting go of Percy's hand to motion at all of Percy. "You're – you. And you're not just pretty, you're also sweet and kind! I think it is impossible to not have a crush on you with all your... you-ness."
"My me-ness?", Percy blinked a couple of times, staring at the blonde.
"Yes. You have a lot of you-ness and it's... it's a lot..." Jason frowned at him before adjusting his glasses out of habit. "Also like without your shirt you look like one of these Greek hero statues."
Jason glared at him like this was some grand accusation, but all it did was make Percy laugh.

Jason had never been a big swimmer. He could swim, sure. He'd been to the beach before, and of course pools with his friends. But he didn't like the act of swimming excessively. What he did however like a lot was watch his soulmate swim. This summer was the first time Jason got to take Percy with him to LA, to the second McLean home – because Tristan was currently shooting a movie in LA. The way Percy's whole face had lit up when they first went to the beach together.
"Pe—ercy. Come out of the water," called Jason out loudly.
"What? No. You can't give me a beach and expect me not to be in the water!"
Percy looked at him like a wounded baby seal, which was just way too cute to deny. But Jason didn't just want to look at his boyfriend. What was the point of a private beach if he couldn't enjoy it with his soulmate? Raising his eyebrows, Jason held up the plate of water-melon he had brought. Within moments, Percy was at his side, licking his lips.
"Ba—abe," Percy groaned pleased and grabbed a slice.
Before he took a bite, he leaned down to kiss Jason's cheek quickly. Jason grinned at the blue on Percy's lips and nose now. Finally, Percy sat down comfortably with Jason. Rolling onto his side, Jason supported his head with one hand and reached out with his other. He pressed two fingers against Percy's side and started drawing a heart. It was azure-blue.
"Stop drawing on me, dork," complained Percy with a mouthful.
"Mh... no..." Jason drawled thoughtfully and wrote Jason's next to the heart.
"Oi. You can't just mark your territory like that. Also, that tickles."
Percy squirmed a little and leaned in to kiss Jason again. Wow. Jason never thought he'd ever get to date Percy, much less that he'd end up being Percy's soulmate. How was he this lucky...?
