Summary/Disclaimer: Time for another chapter of Ghost Jedi. enjoy the 1500-word chapter. I don't own Star Wars, Disney and Lucas Arts.
(Rodia, 19BBY)
Gremal hummed and shook his head. Gregor was a good warrior… But leading an entire military charge? He didn't know if the clone captain could handle that duty.
"Did someone manage to get a signal to the Vigilance?" Gremal asked as he turned and watched the gunships slowly approach the planet.
He knew they'd be outmatched… If this was a droid base? Then they had way more soldiers then him. He could order his fleet to bombard the moon, but he doubted the Rodians would be ok with a Republic fleet laying waste to their moon.
Still? He was curious as to what had actually brought the Separatists to Rodia. Yes, the world was a republic planet, but it was STILL outside their borders. Then again? Gremal guessed that the Separatists either didn't care the more that he thought about it.
Or they were quite desperate to end this war…
"Sir, Admiral Dron is attempting to contact us." Gremal heard before he turned to wave the transmission through.
"Patch it through." Gremal ordered as he flicked his lightsaber, deflecting blaster fire as he went. "And someone request reinforcements, we need to…" Gremal started to say before something cut him off.
More droids continued to land, forcing the Republic defenders into closer lines. He turned to cut open a Super Battle droid and quickly realized the machine was deactivated.
He turned to see Gregor as the duo started to cut into the battle droid lines. They looked at each other.
"General? We've run into some bad news." Dron responded to which Gremal could only roll his eyes.
"Name some news that ISN'T currently bad." Gremal muttered as he sliced a B1 in half. "Admiral? We're pinned down by droids right now. Tell Master Yoda I'll deal with the base when I can, right now I'm trying to keep them from breaking our lines." Gremal pointed out, throwing the remains of the droid into another squad of the machines.
More encroaching platoons of droids forced the Jedi General back. He almost questioned how many soldiers were willing to be deactivated just to try and kill him.
"I think I regret complaining about the lack of action." Gremal heard from Gregor, causing him to chuckle with amusement.
"I think I do as well, Gregor." Gremal stated before watching a pair of vulture droids land. "See if you can get some air support in here, we need to punch a hole in their defenses." Gremal pointed out as he turned to the side.
It wasn't like he was he was wrong, not about this at least. He did question what had brought so many forces to here.
"General we've detected several separatist vessels in orbit." Gremal heard from Dron, causing him to curse at this. "It appears their planning for a full invasion… We've been ordered to deploy in full. General Kenobi won't be arriving for a while and it seems they plan on slugging this out. I'll be sending what we can spare, but I have orders to also be prepared for a full strike on the moon." Gremal heard from Dron as he looked at Gregor.
The duo couldn't believe this. The separatists were plotting to commit to Rodia? Now Gremal wanted answers, and he suspected he knew from where.
"You starting to think that Tactical Droid knew things they don't want us to know?" Gremal questioned, watching clones desperately blast away at the dozens of encroaching droids. "I'm starting to think they might know about that droid… Which means its good you found it now instead of when they did." Gremal added while they ducked behind a piece of rock.
"Well, if they did?" Gremal heard from Gregor as the duo slowly looked upon the battle, Gregor firing and downing a pair of B1s. "Then you should get back to the Vigilance, sir. I'd assume whatever these tinnies want? It's related to whatever that clanker knows. You figure it out, I'll try and hold them off here, sir." Gregor added to which Gremal could only shake his head.
"Did you NOT hear me talk about how I'm not going anywhere?" Gremal questioned with shock evident in his voice.
"Droids aren't going to stop anytime soon, General." Gregor pointed out as a faint roar of engines signaled good news.
Gremal watched a pair of BLT-B Y-Wings swoop in, pausing only to fire a pair of proton torpedoes into one of the landing craft. The craft spun, it's engines slowly dying out as the craft spun towards the ground, losing power. It smashed into the ground, exploding in a massive fireball and taking its soldiers with it.
Gremal watched as the Vulture Droids chirped to each other before both transformed and take flight after the craft. Gremal could only sigh as the approaching columns of droids paused their advance at the sight of their sudden losses.
The clones popped from cover firing as droid after droid fell to their fire. A pair of the clones collapsed, blaster bolts burning into their chests. Gremal cursed before turning to greet another pair of B1s.
"Gregor, keep the right flank open." Gremal ordered and got a nod from the soldier in question. "Blast it, I guess I am going to have to deal with that base." Gremal stated and shook his head.
The remaining 3 landing ships unloaded rows of battle droids. Gremal watched as the clones retreated from their lines to find better cover.
"Fall back to the swamp!" Gremal ordered as he realized they wouldn't be able to hold this area… Not against the hundreds of droids here. "Gregor, I hate to… I have to shut down that base, if there's more then this many droids?" Gremal Asked only for Gregor to pause and shake his head.
He knew more then anything that Gremal couldn't protect Rodia without dealing with the supply base. The general didn't want to abandon his men, but if he didn't destroy the supply base?
Then more droids would come, more of his brothers would die. Gregor considered a tactical retreat better then a strategic defeat for their forces.
"Take some of those tinnies for me, sir." Gregor stated, getting a nod from Gremal. "We're hold them off as long as we can." Gregor added which caused the Jedi to shake his head.
Damn these droids, he'd make sure to remind them of their sacrifice and give whoever died a proper burial if possible. He turned on his comlink and linked to Dron's channel.
"Admiral, I need a gunship and reinforcements." Gremal ordered, shaking his head. "How bad are things in orbit?" Gremal questioned, knowing the space battle would also be a deciding factor in things.
"It seems their dispatching what fighters they have." Gremal heard from Dron. "Our fleet is holding steady, but it's quite clear their in this for the long hall. Their holding position near the moon, seems they know exactly what's going to happen." Dron stated, causing Gremal to curse in annoyance.
If they held off the republic long enough? It wouldn't matter if the fleet was defeated. They would land enough droids to cripple the Republic forces. Gremal doubted they didn't also have more reinforcements on the way.
"We need to make sure that base is taken care of, Admiral." Gremal stated as they made a retreat, the droids slowly continued a march after them.
"I'll make sure their capital ships are delayed, general." Dron stated as a LAAT approached their position. "However? I would hurry, there looks like the droids might be launching another wave of landing craft." Dron added as Gremal turned to Gregor.
"Make them pay for every inch, but don't do anything reckless." Gremal ordered as the LAAT slowly landed, its doors sliding open. "Don't do anything insane. I don't want to come back to seeing a bunch of dead heroes." Gremal ordered before slowly approaching the gunship.
He knew they'd be ready for the jedi. They weren't stupid… Well, that stupid, Gremal expected a fight for the republic forces invading the planet, it wasn't like they wouldn't be prepared for his arrival.
Gregor said nothing, knowing the assault down here came down to him. He saluted the Jedi General as he boarded the gunship.
He turned and started leading the clone way, their forces routed but not defeated at the moment.
This was not going to be a battle dedicated by power, but by cunning and skill.
"Let's go, men!" Gregor ordered.
