Moon in the Darkness
Draco Malfoy looked at himself in the mirror, taking in his dress robes and perfectly coifed hair, as well as the boutonniere attacked to his robes, satisfied with what he saw. He almost couldn't believe that today had come. It had only been a year since had had proposed to the love of his life, Luna Lovegood, and now he was going to be marrying her today. He never thought his life would lead him here, lead him to a point of true that he had never had before. But he supposed being with Luna did that to him, and she made him happy.
He could remember when he had first taken true notice of the blonde witch, him having bumped into the dreamy Ravenclaw after leaving his Potions class. He had apologized, followed by Luna saying something about as nonsensical as they were cryptic. Despite this, he found that she smelled like the Amortentia he had just brewed that day. He had encountered her again later following the war, her having found him in Flourish and Blotts and greeted him kindly. Draco had been quite aware of the stares and whispers they were getting, but Luna seemingly didn't mind being seen with him despite his bad reputation and the disgracing of his family name.
Ever since that day, he had found himself thinking about her often. Draco would think about how she had become his friend when he didn't have any, how she didn't judge him for what he had done and how interloped he had been with Lord Voldemort, when he had been lost in the dark and didn't know how to get out. Even when she had been held captive at Malfoy Manor, she didn't hold that against him. Luna cared nothing about his torrid past, and she saw the real him. The one moment that always stood out to him in their friendship was when she had stood up to the blasted Daily Prophet writer Rita Skeeter for him. When that had happened, he knew in that moment that Luna was someone truly special in his life. He knew he didn't deserve the blonde witch's friendship or her forgiveness, but he was glad that he had gotten it. They had grown closer, his feelings for her growing until he eventually asked her out on a proper date, as well as to be his girlfriend. Her accepting to being his girlfriend was shocking, but it had been one of the happiest days of his life.
As Draco thought about his fiancé, he couldn't help but smile. Yes, asking her to be his girlfriend had been nerve-wrecking, but it didn't compare to when he had asked her to marry him. Now that day, he had been nervous out of his wits, but he didn't regret it at all, especially now that they were finally about to wed. He chuckled softly as he remembered when he knew that he wanted her to be his wife and decided to propose, as well as the place he had decided to do it.
(Flashback…)
Draco stood staring at the ring nestled in the fancy little box, his heart pounding in his chest as he stared at it. This ring, he had had it especially commissioned, and he planned on using it to propose, propose to his girlfriend of two years. The ring was an opal stone, opal having the meaning of love and passion. It was ovular in shape and surrounded by tiny moonstones, all set in a gold band that he knew would fit perfectly on her finger. The ring really was beautiful, but what made it special was that he had infused some of his magic into it, and the ring would pulse in time with his heartbeat whenever they were away from one another. It would pulse in time with his heartbeat so that she would always know that his heart is hers and would only beat for her. Merlin, he really hoped she would say 'yes' when he asked her to marry him.
He had just put the box away in his pocket when a familiar blonde witch skipped towards him, her dirty blonde hair swaying behind her. Grinning, he wrapped his arms around her as she greeted, "Hello Draco."
"Hi Luna," he replied, giving her a sweet kiss. "I'm glad you could make it; I know you've been busy with work lately."
"Of course. I wouldn't miss a lunch date with you, especially knowing you have been busy as well." Luna gestured towards the entrance of the pub they were in front of, the Leaky Cauldron. "Shall we go in?"
Draco nodded and took hold of his girlfriend's hand, the two of them walking inside and being greeted by Hannah Abbott, soon to be Hannah Longbottom, who was working behind the counter. The two of them soon found a table and sat down, Hannah coming to take their food and drink orders. It wasn't too long following that they got their lunch and began eating, talking and laughing, and simply enjoying each other's company. Draco listened in interest as Luna recounted to him of how she had helped a Mooncalf deliver its babies the night before while observing a herd for her research as a Magizoologist. Her partner had been there to help her, as the Mooncalf had been in distress, but luckily she and her babies had survived. As for Draco, he worked as Potioneer (while working to become a Potions Master soon), and he told her of some of the potions and potion projects he was doing for St. Mungo's, as well as the Ministry. It was interesting how the Ministry seemed okay with him making potions for them, though he was always under supervision; they didn't completely trust him, despite Potter sticking up for him during his trial following the war and not serving any jailtime.
The couple finished up having their lunch and seeing that they still had some time before having to return to work, decided to go to Fortescue's for a bit of ice cream. They ordered ice cream sundaes and sat eating them out of little ceramic bowls, continuing to talk and laugh with one another. After a while, Draco looked around the parlor for a moment, as well as the other patrons, before asking, "Remember when we first came here together? We were confronted by that Skeeter woman?"
Luna nodded as she took another bite of her sundae. "Yes, I remember. I kindly told her to leave you alone."
"Yes, you did," Draco replied with a smile. He looked into her pale silver eyes before saying, "You may not know it, but when you had stood up for me that day, that was the moment that I knew that you were who I wanted to be with, the one that I wanted. I know it took me a while to get that across to asking you to date me, but I'm glad that I did and that you said 'yes'. I'm honestly surprised I've convinced you to stay dating me this long."
The two of them laughed softly before Draco continued. "Listen Luna, I honestly cannot imagine my life without you in it anymore. And to be frank, I don't want to. I know that I don't deserve you, and probably never will, but I will try to prove that I'm worthy of being your partner for as long as you'll let me. And I'm hoping that you'll let me for a long time, preferably the rest of our lives. Therefore, that leads me to ask you this."
He pulled the fancy box out of his pocket and dropped out of his chair onto one knee, opening the it and revealing the ring to Luna, presenting her with it. A hush went over the parlor as the other patrons took notice of the proposal happening before them. Lillian Fortescue couldn't help but smile at the sight, remembering what she believed to be the first moments of love between them years ago in the ice cream parlor. To see Draco Malfoy and Luna Lovegood come full circle back here was adorable for her.
As grey eyes looked into pale silver, Draco asked, "Luna Lovegood, will you do me the honor of marrying me and being my wife for as long as you live. Or can stand being with me?"
Luna giggled at his words, knowing he was simply playing despite the seriousness of it. Draco loved her and she knew that he she loved him. Still, she couldn't believe that he was proposing to her. Even so, as she gazed between the beautiful ring, as well as the hopeful expression on the blond wizard's face, she knew there was only one answer for her as her heart swelled in her chest.
Nodding, Luna answered, "Yes, I will marry you, Draco Malfoy."
As the patrons clapped for them, Draco grinned before slipping the opal and moonstone ring onto Luna's finger. Once it was placed on her hand, Luna kissed him passionately before hugging him close, his own arms wrapping around her, his face buried in her neck. There were some patrons who were sneering and even leaving following the loving moment, but Draco didn't care in the slightest. He didn't care what they thought about him or Luna accepting his proposal, because he was immensely and truly happy for probably the first time in his life. Then again, whenever he was with Luna, he knew true happiness.
(End Flashback…)
A knock on the door brought Draco out of his musings and he called for the person to enter. The door opened and Harry Potter stuck his head inside, dressed in a pair of dress robes as well. He was Draco's best man, a surprise to both of them. But they had formed a friendship during their last year at Hogwarts, so it made sense that he was the one Draco had asked. Walking over to the blond, he said, "It's time for the wedding to start, Malfoy. Are you ready?"
"Yes, I'm ready," Draco replied to the bespectacled wizard. "I'm just still in wonder that this is happening."
"Hey, Luna loves you, and you love her. Everyone deserves happiness, even you, and I'm glad you've found it with Luna. But just so you know, if you do anything to hurt her, I'll hex you so bad your insides will be on your back."
Draco couldn't help but laugh. "Duly noted, Potter. Alright, let's go."
The two of them left the room Draco was in, his godfather's old quarters, and walked out into the Dungeons of Hogwarts. Draco and Luna had decided to have their wedding on their wedding on the grounds of Hogwarts, particularly next to the Great Lake. The two of them had spent a lot of time together at the lake during their final year; it was the perfect spot with perfect memories for them. Upon finding out that was the venue for their wedding, Marcus and Hermione Flint had mentioned that it was at the Great Lake where they had made their relationship official as well. It seemed the Great Lake really was a perfect, romantic spot.
Draco and Harry made their way out of the castle, onto the grounds, and towards the Great Lake where the venue was set up, the guests already seated and waiting. They headed down the aisle to the altar where Professor Flitwick was waiting to officiate the ceremony—per Luna's request—and Draco waited for the wedding to officially begin, smiling at his mother who was smiling at her only child proudly. It wasn't too much longer before the traditional wedding march began playing, the audience turning towards the end of the aisle where fairies began flying down the aisle, dropping flower petals along the way. He had no idea how Luna managed to convince them to do this, but it was truly a beautiful sight. However, that was nothing compared to the sight of Luna walking down the aisle with her father Xenophilius Lovegood, following behind Hermione Flint who was her maid of honor.
Luna was dressed in a pearl white satin wedding gown with a Queen Anne neckline and long sleeves. A beautiful light blue embroidered pattern traveled from her waist to nearly the bottom of the skirt, a light blue ribbon tied around her waist with a bow in the back. Her long dirty blonde hair was completely down, not at all pinned back in any sort of way. She was sporting a forehead tiara made of pearls and tiny diamonds, with a veil hanging from the back. In her hand she carried a bouquet of roses and peonies, and she had the most beautiful smile on her face, her pale silver eyes shining. Gosh, she was so beautiful, but she always had been.
She soon made it to the altar and gave her bouquet to Granger before taking hold of his hands. As Flitwick began to officiate the ceremony, Draco couldn't help but wonder how his life would have been different if he had never encountered Luna after the war. He had been in a dark place with no one to turn to, and then she came along. Luna had sought him out, being his light in the dark. She was his moon the darkness that was his life, his moon in his dark sky that brightened everything up for him. He didn't deserve her, but he just loved her so much and was glad that she loved him in return. And as they exchanged vows and rings, Draco knew that he always would love and continue to love her. And just like Luna had been to him, he would be a positive light in her life and make her happy for the rest of their lives.
