The Union of Romans and Greeks
Writer's Month 2021
Percy's best friend was a lesbian, that's why he ended up with a husband.
Well, he was getting ahead of things there. Percy's best friend was Annabeth Chase, they met when they were twelve and when Percy was on the run from a Minotaur, leading to them finding the Master Bolt – and the rest was, quite literally in this case, history. Percy and Annabeth became heroes, the kind that would be talked about in centuries to come, as they led the Greek army in the second great Titan War. The two had even tried to date for a bit, because people expected them to and Percy was very clueless about these things so he went with the flow. The flow led to Annabeth coming out as a lesbian, realizing so after a few weeks of trying to make it work. Part of Percy had been really glad about that, because Percy wasn't really feeling the romance either. He had somehow expected things to just... work out, once they were dating. Naturally progress. But it didn't feel right, Annabeth was his best friend and that was what he wanted with her.
So the two of them broke up again, went back to being best friends and leaders of Camp Half-Blood. There was a lot to do, after the war. New cabins to build, new demigods to claim and bring here and train. Recovering from the war. There was a lot to overcome, to deal with.
It was roughly five years after the Titan War that the gods, in their finite wisdom, announced the existence of a Roman camp with Roman demigods and Chiron sat them down for an alternate history lesson on the infighting between Romans and Greeks. They had won the Titan War while fighting it from two sides without knowing about the respective other side, which just didn't seem very wise. So the gods had agreed that, to avoid that for future prophecies, Greeks and Romans needed to be united and learn to work together.
Their proposal was a simple one; in fact, the oldest way of uniting warring nations. Marriage.
There were two Roman leaders and two Greek leaders. Two unions would be formed, one Roman to move to the Greeks and one Greek to move to the Romans. It had been discussed at large between Percy and Annabeth and Percy assumed, also among the Romans. Duty to their people and to paving a path to the future was what made them agree in the end.
However, Annabeth was a lesbian. And though she was ready to agree to an arranged marriage to make life better for their people and for future generations of demigods, she was not willing to marry a man. The Romans were, just like them, a guy and a girl in charge. Percy was pansexual, so he didn't mind if he ended up with a wife or a husband, and it turned out both Romans were bisexual, so they too didn't object to the switch up. Either way, they'd end up married to a stranger.
And that was how Percy ended up with a handsome, blonde Roman husband in New Rome (it seemed the Romans weren't really the most creative when it came to naming things...).
The wedding ceremony itself was beautiful, even his mom and Sally could attend it because New Rome was an actual city, one that could be visited even by mortals. His husband was cute and sweet and very respectful as they danced and made idle small-talk. Turned out his husband was Jason Grace, as in Thalia's long lost brother. Which now made Thalia Percy's sister-in-law. Which sounded like fun and great ways to tease her. It was, however, also oddly reassuring. Even if Thalia hadn't seen him since he was two years old, this still felt more like marrying someone who wasn't a total stranger. Everything here was new. He lived in a new house, with a new husband, in a new city, surrounded by new people and a whole new culture. It was a lot.

The hunters of Artemis stuck around in California for a couple of weeks. Now that Jason knew the truth, the truth about himself and his sister, he finally got a chance to get to know her properly. She wasn't there every day, but she dropped by to talk to him for those weeks, bonding with him, telling him the good about their mom. And also the good about his new husband. Which was so reassuring, because he had just married a stranger. She also knew Reyna's new wife – though also, Reyna and her wife had hit it right off. Well, so had Jason and his husband, in a way. They had become great friends in the past weeks, they actually worked well together as praetors, once Percy got used to New Rome and the Romans. The son of Poseidon was quirky, snarky and very cute.
Also really hot. Being the son of Poseidon, Percy really liked swimming. Which involved very few clothes. Jason found himself thoroughly enjoying that view, just as much as he enjoyed Percy's general company. They didn't just work well together on the job, they also worked well together at home. Taking care of chores, cooking with each other, they even agreed on entertainment, well, most of the time at least. Other times, they'd introduce one another to their favorite things.
Or, in short: It was incredibly easy to fall in love with Percy Jackson. Something that made Thalia laugh when Jason told him that. Apparently, Percy had left a trail of broken hearts at Camp Half-Blood too. Then again, savior of Olympus and all that also left quite the impression.
So here Jason was, in his own living room, sitting on his own couch, hopelessly pining for his own husband. And wasn't that just ridiculous? But how could he confess...? This marriage had been an arrangement made by the gods and all four of them had agreed to be professional about this. Commit to it for the good of their people. No one mentioned love. What was Jason supposed to do?
"What's with the heavy sighs, Jay? Something wrong?"
Blinking startled, Jason looked up from his position on the couch, seeing Percy come out of the kitchen with a blue apron on and a tray of blue cookies in his hand. He liked blue food, one of the cute little quirks that Jason had fallen in love with.
"I. Uh. Nothing. Just. Thinking stupid thoughts," Jason laughed awkwardly.
Percy did not look convinced. Understandably so; Jason was a really bad liar and he knew that. It had earned him many deadpans from Reyna too over the years. So before he could say anything else compromising, he grabbed a cookie and stuffed it into his mouth. A moan escaped him at the taste. His husband was a really good baker. Once he swallowed, he licked his lips pleased.
"I love you," Jason sighed dreamily, before catching what he said. "Y... Your baking. I mean."
But the way Percy was staring at him with raised eyebrows and flushed cheeks told him that there was no saving himself now. The truth was out there. All he could do was wait for the reaction.
"I love... your baking... too," Percy grinned and gently kissed Jason on the lips.
"But I don't bake," argued Jason confused before he caught on. "Oh."

Author's note: Because the diplomatic way of uniting two warring fractions is MARRIAGE not kidnapping and place switching. HERA, as the freaking Goddess of Marriage, should appreciate that ùû
