Chapter 8

Thou art I, I art Thou... So canst thou Please stop Acting the Court Fool and Ruining my Reputation?

Just as I was about to begin my journey, a somehow transparent warning pop-up appeared in the corner of my vision.

[Notice!]

Strange. What is it?

[System notice]

So, it turns out I forgot to mention HOW you apply your jobs. You need to go to the job menu, then select it. However, there are some moogles out there that you can buy grids from, for you to stack multiple jobs on to; the main difference there being that you can unlock job combos which give bonuses. While, yes, there is a wardrobe change, people won't FULLY notice that it was actually a vast difference. The best way to explain this would be that people understand as if you were simply changing a jacket or coat. The different jobs ALSO cause a shift in your personality, as they carry a metaphysical weight to them equatable to the sky that Atlas supposedly carried. I did my best to slough off some of that weight, but we can't have it all, can we?

[System notice]

Oh. This was a very much needed notice. Thank you very much. [Menu].

[stats]

[important persons]

[items]

[jobs]

[skills]

[guidebook]

[perks]

[inventory]

Wait, why do I only have an inventory now? Is it because there wasn't really anything to own in that void I was born in to begin with?

[Yes. Rather perceptive of you to realize that.]

I didn't make it through college being a ignorant fuck... Or, at least, that is what I say. Anyways, time to get on with the ceremony. [jobs]

[jobs]

[active job: jobless]

[Priest]

[jobless]

[jobs]

What? What is "Jobless"?

[basically, the Freelancer but worse. No skills, no passives, no stat boosts, only good thing is that it counts as max level at level 1 for passives that use maxed-out jobs.]

Ah. I see. Do I just select the job I want?

[indeed.]

Alright, [Priest.]

And then, for what I believe is the second time this month, my brain clocked out.

Falling.

I am falling in another void.

There is a stained glass floor beneath me.

I slow down, landing in the center.

In front of me, at the edge of the circle, there is a mask.

This is what it manifests as.

I reach for the mask-

[Job selected: Priest]

Huh. That was certainly an... Experience. Now then, to find some time when everyone is asleep, and then test my new strength. If it is as it says on the tin, then it will truly set me above and beyond. Especially in this world, where a simple Spirit Ward would grant resistance to over HALF of the entire type chart. A fitting result for me. Now...

"How, exactly, are we going to take care of our sleeping arrangements?"

The poor girl probably got whiplash from turning around so fast. Makes sense; almost nothing tried to creep up on us.

"Uh, what... What do you mean?"

Sigh.

"Child. It's been roughly 5 hours since we set off, and it was roughly 3 PM when we left. Do you honestly expect us to find a worthwhile encounter AND the end of the forest before nightfall?"

"I- w-well, maybe if we're quick-"

"And if we aren't?"

"Well, I brought a tent with me! It's a bit on the small side, but if we squeeze in..."

Well, at least she thought ahead.

"Honey, no. You are a growing girl, and you need room to become great enough to deserve the title of "Champion's rival". You keep the tent, I'll be fine."

That got her sputtering. Deary me, this child... Too pure.

"Wh- I- huh- n-no, no, it's alright, you don't need to-"

"I said no, and that's final. I know what to do in this scenario; there's no need to worry."

After all, wouldn't be the first allnighter we pulled off. The fact I don't need sleep makes things that much easier. Actually, wait, did Mira give me a tent in the supplies? Or just rations, balls & pots? Thoughts for later.

"Uh-I- Sigh. Well, if you do know how to go about things in these situations, I guess there's nothing to worry about."

"Exactly. Now, let's go find ourselves a Pokemon worthy of being called ours."

And into the thicket we tread forth.
