Chapter 6: Waiting with Koda

As Bakugo's blast went off, Toph stood up and yelled, "Koda, get down!"

Toph slammed her foot into the ground and made a barrier of concrete in front and over both her and Koda. As the blast hit, Toph felt completely blinded from the massive shock wave she felt from the explosion. Since she could not sense anything, she trusted that her barrier would hold up.

After a second, the blast subsided and Toph was beginning to feel her Earth sense again. She felt that her concrete barrier had held up to falling debris and that Koda's heartbeat was going crazy. However, her head was hurting because that blast was like an overload to her brain.

She stomped the ground, and the concrete barrier went back into the ground. Nobody seemed to notice that Koda and her were on the other side of the blast.

Toph yelled at Bakugo, "Hey, Lame Brain! Watch where you are firing your shots! You almost killed people out here!"

"Shut up!" Bakugo yelled from the open hole in the wall.

Toph picked up the watch pad and said, "Hey, Koda, let's move somewhere else, so that exploding idiot doesn't nearly kill us, again."

Koda, still shaking, got up and followed Toph.

Then a soft male voice said, "Thank you for saving me."

Toph registered that Koda spoke to her.

"So, you do talk." Toph said with a pained smirk.

Toph continued, "It's no problem, it's easy to save somebody who's nice."

A sharp pain Toph got from experiencing that blast still rattled her brain. In reaction, she closed her eyes and gritted her teeth for a few seconds.

Koda noticed, "Are you okay?"

Toph continued, "I don't know what it is about explosions, but they seem to mess with my Quirk and blind me."

"Your Quirk is how you see and also how you made that wall, right?" Koda asked.

After walking about a block away, they got near a building, and both sat down.

"Yep, my Quirk is called Earth Connection. It really is a two-part Quirk. The first part is being able to sense objects or items around me through vibrations through rocks, dirt, concrete, or anything that has any earth material in it. For example, when I met you during our entrance exams I "saw" you from further away than you could have heard me yell at you. I can also sense objects being thrown at me that have Earth materials in them. My vibrations do sort of work on solid objects that do not have any Earth material in them, like wood. I could tell if you were in front of me, but I would have no idea it was you. But I am completely and truly blind when it comes to soft items like rubber or carpet. When it comes to anything written on paper, I am blind as well."

After a moment of silence, Koda said, "Okay, I think I have an idea on how you are able to "see" things around you. So, how does the second part of your Quirk work?"

"The second part is controlling items that have Earth in them. It doesn't matter what the material is from dirt to concrete, as long as it has Earth in it, I can control it and bend it anyway I choose to." Toph said.

"Is it harder to use it in larger portions?" Koda asked.

Toph said, "Actually, it is easier to use it when I'm using my Quirk for something basic like that barrier that protected us. The more complex use of my Quirk would be more taxing on my stamina, like if I were to make our barrier have spikes on it."

Koda asked, "How come you didn't use your Quirk during the exams yesterday?"

"I did, but I was being sneaky about it. That's why several of my scores were higher than most of our classmates. I'm actually trying to keep the second part of my Quirk under wraps until the Sports Festival. I want people to be shocked when I go all out in the one-on-one battles the Sports Festival usually has. It'll be like a Quirk Wrestling moment!" Toph explained.

Toph asked, "Have you ever watched Quirk Wrestling?"

Koda shook his head and said, "No, but I have heard a little about it."

"Well, we'll have to hang out sometime and I'll show you some of the best stuff!" Toph said excitedly.

Koda nodded his head and Toph sensed his heartbeat pick up slightly. It was then that Toph realized that she could sense the heartbeat of other individuals, which would be interesting to explore later.

Then another loud explosion came from the building where the current battle was at.

All Might's voice came through the viewing pad, "Team A is the WINNER!"

"Cool," Toph said, "What happened."

Koda got the option to watch the replay and explained what happened.

"Good for Broken Bones and Twinkle Toes." Toph commented.

Soon, the next Battle Trial was scheduled. Unfortunately, it was Team B and Team I, which disappointed Toph because she wanted to battle.

It ended quickly as Todoroki overpowered Ojiro and Sato in a single instant with ice. It surprised Toph, she was intrigued how she would fare against Todoroki in a battle with his Quirk.

The next match was Team H against Team E.

"Come on! I just want to fight!" Toph shouted to the air in frustration.

Toph sat back down and began to listen to the screen as the next battle began.

"I suppose we should get an idea of how we should handle our next battle." Toph said.

Koda nodded.

Toph said, "How far out can you control animals?"

Koda said, "As long as my voice can reach them. However, they are animals so they only move as fast as an animal can."

Toph said, "Then maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to start gathering animals to the area now so that you are ready when it's our turn."

Koda nodded and started talking to the sky.

Toph paid attention to the current battle, both Tokoyami and Asui outsmarted Sero and Mina to capture the "bomb".

Koda sat back down and said, "Birds should be in the area shortly and if we aren't the next team up, we should get animals like squirrels, raccoons, and deer to show up."

Toph laid down and said, "Even though I really want to fight now, I guess I'll hope that we'll be last."

The next match was Team G versus Team C. Toph did not know whether she was happy that she would be fighting last.

However, it did not matter because she had to focus on figuring out how to battle Team J.

"Okay," Toph said, "Team J is made up of Kirishima and Hagakure. So, it seems like from what I sensed yesterday that Kirishima's Quirk made his body harder, am I correct?"

"That's what I saw as well." Koda said.

"What is Hagakure's Quirk? Because I still couldn't understand it other than it has something to do with her being naked." Toph said bluntly.

Koda was caught off guard as he said, "Well… you-you see… umm… her Quirk is uhh… that she is uhh… invisible."

Toph grinned and said, "But because I don't "see" like other people, she is completely visible to me."

"That would be accurate." Koda said as he scratched his chin.

Toph said, "Then we need to use that to our advantage no matter if we are the good guys or the bad guys."

Koda, unconfidently, said, "I sort of have an idea of how we could fight them."

"Well, I don't want to lose, so let's hear it." Toph said.

For the remainder of the other fight, Toph and Koda talked about their strategy. It was simple but they had the element of surprise.

Soon, Kaminari and Jiro ran out of time against Momo and Aoyama. Then, All Might called out.

"Team J will be the Heroes and Team F will be the Villains in this next match!"

Toph stood up and said, "Ready to be the Villains, Animal Boy?"

Koda nodded as they made their way to their battle building.

AN: The Battle Trials have already begun!
