Night 2, 14 minutes until access to A-Wing is lost

Seeing as how there's less than fifteen minutes until we no longer have access to A-Wing, I try to amuse myself by watching my classmates.

Masaki, of course, is nowhere to be seen. There's only two places I find the endlessly shivering boy now that we don't have our blankets: outside in the 2nd Wing Yard or covering himself with the beanbags in the Rec Room.

I can't see them either but Armen, Ryu, and Valentin have already shut themselves inside their cells. I don't know what Armen does in there because I'm ninety-nine percent sure that creature doesn't sleep. Ryu just doesn't care for social interaction and Val is eternally tired.

Last I remember, Kensuke and Toshiro are playing some kind of game in the Rec Room and, of course, Yosuke is in the Church.

At a nearby table, Sting and Hitoshi are having an odd debate on whether or not they're related…going off physical appearances, Sting and Hitoshi look nothing alike but for some reason Sting is insisting that they have the same father.

Anyways.

Last but not least, Takeshi is-

I frown.

What on Earth is he doing?

I was watching him out of the corner of my eye while I was looking around and for the past five minutes or so, Takeshi has been pacing back and forth across the 2nd Wing entryway. Every so often he would look up at the hallway's ceiling but why?

"Luan Delvina!" Takeshi suddenly says, turning on his heel and smiling at me.

I guess I'm about to find out why.

"Do you recall exactly what Monokuma said about being in A-Wing when we weren't supposed to?" Takeshi asks.

Um…

"It...It was one of the rules, yes?" I say, trying to think. "Rule number six, I believe."

Takeshi nods and starts pacing again. This time, he starts thinking out loud as he does so. "'Any attempt to stay in A-Wing when your twelve hours are up will result in a punishment befitting of your sin.' is the rule," he says. "meaning that when we have to leave, we're not allowed to stay."

I stay silent, letting him work out whatever is on his mind.

"But, it doesn't say anything about going back in after we've been locked out." Takeshi says and once again looks up at the ceiling of the 2nd Wing.

Wait.

Wait wait wait wait wait.

I stand up, going over to see whatever he's been looking at. "What do you mean by that?" I ask. "What - why - how would we get back into A-Wing?"

Takeshi points up at the ceiling. "By a vent, of course."

"Mallkoj." I breathe out, panic starting to set in.

"Of course there's no way to know for sure that the vent leads to somewhere in A-Wing." Takeshi says with a frown. "Besides, most of us won't be able to reach up there, even with a ladder." he points out.

"...Why are you looking at me like that?" Takeshi asks.

"You are the second tallest person out of all twenty-two of us."

Takeshi bursts out laughing and pats me on the shoulder. "Relax! I know! If I had any plans to even go up there, why would I tell you? Even then, why would I make the comment about having to be tall enough to get up there?" he says with an easy smile. "Rest easy, Luan Delvina. The Tragedy was hard on me as well but I'm not so weak as to go crazy because I'm being forced to live through a simulation of it." Takeshi says, puffing out his chest.

...Hm.

"Takeshi," I say. "May I ask you something?"

Takeshi nods and pulls out his hair tie to redo his little ponytail. "Sure. Hit me." he says.

God he really does look like a girl sometimes - anyways - "Why is it that you refer to everyone by their full...their whole name?" I ask. "You said I may call you by your first name but you still call me Luan Delvina." I point out. "And there was also that...incident in A-Wing."

"...Huh?" Takeshi mumbles looking around frantically. He looks up, his eyes widening. "Luan Delvina, get your arms out of the bars right now."

"Wh-What?"

"NOW, Luan!" Takeshi shouts, grabbing me and pulling me away from the cell door with a tug. "Get her away, Sora!"

"You just called me Luan - w-which I have no problem with - and you referred to Sugawara by her given name as well."

Takeshi freezes, his hair in his hands and his hair tie between his teeth. He stares at me with a surprised look on his face. Takeshi stays like that for a minute while I stand there awkwardly before he finishes retying his hair.

"Well," Takeshi finally says. "I suppose...I panicked." he says and taps his chin. "I realized what that alarm and that rumble was signalling and while we all aren't the best of friends, I didn't want you to lose your hands. Sora Sugawara and your little girl included." Takeshi says thoughtfully, like he hadn't ever thought about that incident again. "To both of you, your hands are vital to your talent. And, well, Yukiko Ishihara is a baby compared to the rest of us. I suppose protecting her is just natural, yes?"

I cross my arms. "I...suppose." I agree. "But you did not answer the first part of my q-"

DING DONG BING BONG!

Our attention is drawn towards one of the many monitors in M-Pod. Monokuma appears on the screen. There's a police cap on his head and he's swinging a pair of handcuffs on his arm. "Rise and shine, inmates! It is now 7 AM and that means nighttime is officially over! Gentlemen, please report back to M-Pod and get a good day of rest. Ladies, the door to A-Wing will open in sixty seconds. May M-Pod have sweet, sweet dreams about the crimes they've committed and may F-Pod have a beautiful day of reflecting on the consequences of their actions." he says with that oh-so irritating smile of his and the monitor shuts itself off.

I shake my head and turn back to Takeshi to finish what I was saying but the boy in question is already yawning and stretching.

"I guess that's goodnight, then." Takeshi says with a yawn. "I will see you in the evening. Goodnight, Luan Delvina." he says with a smile and heads off towards his cell.

I sigh and follow after him.

I still find Takeshi incredibly odd but I feel like I understand him a little bit better.

Key word: a little bit.

Day 3, 12 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

Kasumi and I stare down at our 'breakfast' with distaste. Compared to the slop from yesterday, this is…

"This looks like vomit." Kasumi cringes, her face turning green.

...Yeah.

I ate some questionable things during the Tragedy but that was only when I was literally starving. Whatever this is, it was intentionally made to be…

I shiver.

Yeah, no. I'm not eating this.

Kasumi and I push our plates away in unison.

One good thing that came out of the Tragedy is that I'm used to going without food. By the look on Kasumi's face, I'm guessing she has the same idea I do. We could either make ourselves sick now by eating this or make ourselves sick later by not eating.

Later seems better.

"So what's on the agenda for today?" Kasumi asks with a tired sigh.

I tap my throat and nod in Juriya's direction.

Kasumi makes an 'o' with her mouth and suddenly she's several inches too close to my face. "Is she going to give you the green light to speak!? This is so exciting! I feel like I haven't heard your voice in ages-"

Kasumi stops when I put my finger on her forehead. I slowly push away until her face is suitably two feet away from me. I shake my head and - recalling the lessons from Nemiko I dragged Kasumi into yesterday - spell out C-H-E-C-K U-P in JSL.

Kasumi frowns. "Boo." she pouts. "Fine. Go ahead, I'll make sure she finishes eating." Kasumi says and scoots closer to a sleepy Yukiko. "C'mon, Yuki, we can't finish this for you and there's no snacks, remember? Eat up!"

"Sugawara, good. Finished eating?"

I shake my head.

Juriya clicks her tongue and shakes her head. "...Neither have I. Yesterday's slop was tolerable. This is...I just doubt it lacks any nutrients." she says with a look of disgust. "Come, I'll check you out in the Medical Ward." Juriya says. Without waiting for me, she stands up and leaves F-Pod, heading into A-Wing.

I sigh.

"No sighing, Sugawara."

What the f-

My head snaps back towards the entry of A-Wing to find Juriya looking at me, annoyed. "Well? Come on then." she snaps.

I resist the urge to sigh again out of spite and follow the good doctor to the Medical Ward.

Medical Ward

Day 3, 11 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

"...Good." Juriya says as she drops her hands from my neck. "You're recovering just as I thought you would." she says, looking pleased. "You should have little to no trouble speaking by the fifth morning here but even then, please do not go overboard until, say, another two or three days after." Juriya says and crosses her arms. She looks me up and down silently, a judgmental look on her face.

I cross my arms, giving her the same look right back.

"Tell me - in JSL, there's no need for the notepad - do you have any idea why Hanako and Taro decided to showcase the shock collar on you?"

I frown, deflating when I recall the odd memory that surfaced when I was talking to Kanna yesterday.

"IT'S YOUR FAULT! YOU DID THIS!"

"H-He tried to - he tried to kill my brother!"

"AND YOU KILLED MINE!"

"I-I-I-"

"Don't give me that 'I didn't do anything' crap! You doing nothing is exactly what killed him!"

I can't explain what that 'memory' is yet because I don't know what it is. And the first person I tell certainly isn't going to be someone with dextrous, knife-holding hands that knows the weak points of the human body.

I shake my head and explain that while I might have some idea, I don't want to say anything without being one hundred percent sure because that might put an unnecessary target on my back.

"Hm." Juriya says with that ever superior look on her face. "And you can't tell me why you're here either because even Monokuma couldn't pick a specific reason for you to be here." she says with a thoughtful look on her face.

I nod and sign, What about you?

Juriya blinks, staring at me for a moment. "...What about me?" she asks.

Why are you here? You may have a holier-than-thou attitude sometimes but you are a doctor. A good person. You are helping me even though in this situation it would be smarter to not to.

Juriya stays silent for a moment, going over to sit down by the counters. There's not much else I can do besides wait.

Eventually, Juriya speaks up again: "I made a necessary sacrifice." she says with a frown. "A cruel, but necessary sacrifice. I didn't have any choice." Juriya says, a troubled, guilty look on her face.

So she did do something.

That means everyone else - including me - has to have done something bad enough to get the attention of Hanako and Taro.

...

How does someone become a surgeon so young anyways?

"It's the family business." Juriya responds instantly, taking the subject change in stride. "As I said yesterday, the Inaba family was quite...affluent before the Tragedy. All Inabas are involved in the medical field in one way or another. It was only natural that I came to be too." she explains.

Did you want to though?

Juriya stares at me in the same way she did before: like someone has never tried to get to know her before now. She's not surprised or anything, it's more...I can't tell what it is, actually. Something that I've noticed about the Ultimate Surgeon is that she likes to keep a tight leash on her emotions. The only genuine feeling any of us have managed to get out of Juriya is annoyance.

Juriya leans back in her chair and crosses her legs. She mutters something under her breath, shuts her eyes, and continues speaking. "Of course I did." Juriya answers. "When I learned how to read, I was reading medical journals. When I was seven, my parents taught me first aid and I helped treat the cuts and bruises of my peers at our family clinic. I was a natural." she says, a prideful look on her face when she opens her eyes. "Why wouldn't I want to pursue something I was so easily good at? I could help people and I did so easily."

...Yeah I can definitely see how Juriya falls under the sin of Pride.

"But enough talking. I'm done examining you and I have a game of chess to attend to." Juriya says and stands up. "Evidently, learning the mannerisms of those she copies helps Yoshino to, ah, 'get into character'." she says with a slight frown. "I have no interest in helping her do that, I just wish to play chess. Perhaps you and I could play together someday."

Day 3, 3 minutes until access to A-Wing is lost

The rest of the day passed by without any trouble. Most of us - including myself - noticeably started to slow down because we didn't eat the breakfast, lunch, or dinner provided.

The two people that seem to be the most active are ones I didn't expect at all: Kanna Kawagiri and Harumi Gen Cho.

(After I returned from the Medical Ward, Kasumi told me that Kanna made quite the scene of forcing the 'food' down Harumi's throat. I had the chance to see her do it again myself when it was time for lunch.)

Ignoring the slight green on their faces, I guess the slop does have some nutritional value after all.

I'm still not eating it.

Just like they were yesterday, Kanna and Yume have been whispering to each other (when Kanna isn't force feeding Harumi) all day. That plan Yume apparently had in mind still hasn't come to fruition quite yet-

"Rise and shine, inmates! It is now 7 PM and that means it is officially nighttime. Ladies, please report back to F-Pod and get a good night of rest. Gentlemen, the door to A-Wing will open in sixty seconds. May F-Pod have sweet, sweet dreams about the crimes they've committed and may M-Pod have a beautiful night of reflecting on the consequences of their actions."

"Alright girls! If you wouldn't mind, please gather in the Yard - Yume and I have something we'd like to talk about. Yes, you too, Greyface. Don't look at me like that - no I don't want to play air hockey right now."

I stand corrected.

Night 3, 12 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

I sigh as I wash the toothpaste off of my finger. As annoying as it is to not have a toothbrush, it's just that. Annoying. Nothing to commit murder over.

The food is tolerable as well-

I am used to going without food. Not only did I live through the Tragedy, but my childhood as well…

It's time to go meet Armen.

1st Wing Yard

Night 3, 12 hours until access to A-Wing is regained

...Hm.

I give our hosts an uncaring smile and two thumbs up.

Shun yawns and stretches as she responds to Yume's and Kanna's proposal. "That's it…? Yeah, sure, that's not a problem with me." she agrees.

Kasumi beams and clasps her hands together. "Obviously that's fine with me! Like I told you all before, you can call me Kasu-" she starts but she gets cut off by the Ultimate Bitch.

"Tch. If it'll stop you from killing me, go right the fuck ahead." Harumi grumbles and crosses her arms. "But like I said, my father...he'll be here soon…" she trails off, sounding less confident than she did when she first insisted that.

"I have no issues either, ladies." Candace says with an easy smile. "Whatever y'all are most comfortable with is fine with me."

Juriya glares at her. "Of course you don't have an issue with it, you stupid American. All of you call each other by your given names all the time." she says and pinches the bridge of her nose. "That being said, I do not care either."

Greyface flashes us her pearly whites (who knew a serial killer who looks like they just crawled out of hell would have such good hygiene?). "If you ever happen to find out my government name, you're welcome to call me whatever you want! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" she laughs. "Good luck with that!"

Kaori has that same strange, dark look on her face whenever a certain comedian is around. "Fine. Whatever." she says and crosses her arms. "Can I go now?"

And last but not least, our second youngest inmate surprises us all: "Y-Y-Yes…" Nemiko stammers, her face beet red and looking the most anxious I've ever seen her. "That's...o-okay." she says, shy but determined.

Oh. Wow.

So, not mute then.

Selective mutism, maybe?

Nemiko only said three words but her voice was trembling the entire time and sounded so, so weak. I don't know what her story is but if she can speak but her voice sounds like that, something has to have happened to her. And then there's the fact that Nemiko was kidnapped because she committed some kind of crime...

But what could someone so small (ignoring the fact that she weighs a little bit more than me, I'm still taller) and innocent like her do that's so bad?

When Nemiko starts to recoil from all of the attention, we all simultaneously turn back towards the ones who called us here.

Yume clears her throat and smiles. "R-Right. And, as we were the ones who invited you here, this arrangement is also okay with us, right Kawa - ah, Kanna?"

Kanna gives us a practiced, influencer-esque smile. "Right, Yume." she nods.

Yume continues, "Seeing as how the majority of us are Japanese - including the boys - we both think that if we break that family name barrier we can start to become closer and build trust faster!" she says cheerfully. "If we trust each other…"

"...then we won't kill each other!" Kanna finishes. "During our trials, we were asked if we want to repent and atone for our sins - although I still don't understand what that means because I didn't do anything wrong-"

"Kanna." Yume hisses quietly, lightly nudging her partner.

"-right, sorry. Um. So yeah, they were asking us that so that means there has to be another way out of here, right? Why would they want us to repent and atone if the only way out of here was murder?" Kanna asks. "And if that really is the case, they can't watch the majority of us starve forever."

Everyone's eyes widen.

That possibility never came to my mind.

And judging by the look of shock on the resident big brain's face, Juriya never thought of that either.

Rec Room

Night 3, 11 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

"So Takano, Sakamoto, and Haruki are still your number one 'most likely to snap' suspects." Armen says as more of a statement than a question. "Kamiyama is still in the clear?"

"Yes." I say. "I have not spoken to Kamiyama a lot but I have observed-"

"You've observed me, huh?"

Armen doesn't look the least bit surprised by the interruption. "And this is why I think you're nothing more than a filthy rat, Kamiyama." he sneers. "It's no secret I don't trust you Class 80-B lowlives."

Ryu steps out from behind one of the shelves, his expression as blank as ever. "Ouch." he sighs. "May I ask why exactly you've observed me?"

Before I can answer, as though Armen were the one watching him, he answers in my place. "It's quite simple, actually." Armen says, staring down at Ryu. "I think you and the rest of 'Class 80-B' are plants." he says simply.

"How so?" Ryu asks, sticking his hands in the pockets of his jumpsuit. "I'm a student at Hope's Peak Academy, same as you." he says. "I was kidnapped. Same. As. You." Ryu says, punctuating each word. "I haven't done anything to be suspected of-"

"Did Monokuma not compare you to the serial killer girl?" Armen interrupts him. "I'd say that's plenty to be suspicious of."

Greyface and Ryu are next. It's an...interesting combination, for sure. I don't know much about Ryu but what could the guy possibly have in common with a serial killer? Maybe the sin of Pride but evidently these two aren't guilty of that…

"Greyface!" Monokuma says joyfully. "I can't wait to see what you produce for us!"

"Monokuma!" Greyface replies just as happily. "Happy to oblige!"

"Ryu." Ryu deadpans. "Let's get this over with. I get what she could've done, but what exactly do I have in common with a serial killer?" he asks the exact question I was just thinking.

"Well I'm so glad you asked, Mr. Kuro Kamiyama!"

"Ryu."

"So, Kuro Kamiyama-"

Ryu sighs.

"-we don't need to go over what our lovely neighborhood Greyface has done so I'll get right on to talking about you, Kuro Kamiyama." Monokuma says. "Are you really telling me you don't know what you have in common with Greyface?"

Ryu frowns and stares Armen down. "And as I told Greyface, don't presume to know what the bear is talking about." he says, slightly raising his voice.

Armen smirks. "Ooo. Did I touch a nerve?" he taunts.

"A-Ah, perdon, I am sorry for interrupting but I heard Ryu yelling - he does not usually do that, so…"

We all turn to see our friendly neighborhood fireman approaching us. Valentin moves to stand beside Ryu, looking between the three of us. His expression is kind enough but his body language says he's ready to defend himself and Ryu if need be.

"Everything is fine, Valentin." I say, doing my best to give the Ultimate Firefighter a reassuring smile. "Ryu and I were just leaving, yes?" I say, looking pointedly at the plain looking boy. I don't mean it as an insult - he is the Ultimate Spy, after all. Looking plain is what he does for a living. More power to him.

The Ultimate Spy…

Hm…

"Val, do you know where Takeshi is?"

Ryu, Takeshi, and I stare up at the ceiling of the 2nd Wing.

"You want me to go up there." Ryu repeats.

"That's right." Takeshi nods. "You're a little bit smaller than Luan Delvina and you're the Ultimate Spy. Wouldn't it be better for someone like you to investigate up there?"

Ryu shrugs. "I guess. Let's do it in the morning then, when everyone else goes to sleep." he says. "It'll be easier to tell if it does lead to the girls if they're up and awake making noise."

I nod. "Tonight, then."

Takeshi smiles. "Tonight! Gosh, isn't this exciting?"

Day 4, 12 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

I yawn and turn over in my bed when Monokuma's morning announcement finishes playing.

I turn back over in my bed.

"Come ooooooon, Sora!" Kasumi coos and physically turns me back over (how does she still have enough strength for that?). "Aren't you excited? Tomorrow you get to talk again!"

I resist the urge to sigh and sit up, quickly signing some choice words at my roommate.

I was excited until I turned around to see you staring at me. Were you watching me sleep?

"...No?"

This is exactly why I didn't want her to know where my dorm was.

2nd Wing

Day 4, 12 hours until access to A-Wing is regained

I hold the ladder steady as Takeshi removes the vent. He cranes his neck as he tries to look inside and beams. Takeshi securely leans back down against the ladder and calls down, "It's just like I thought, Luan Delvina! Someone small can fit in here no problem!"

Ryu stretches out his limbs and glances at me. "Steady?" he asks, glancing between me and the ladder.

"Steady." I nod.

Ryu nods and starts climbing.

He meets Takeshi at the top and the tall Tailor lets Ryu use him as another stepping stool, carefully standing up and heaving the Ultimate Spy into the vent. "So! What's it look like up there, Ryu?" Takeshi asks.

Ryu is silent for a moment before we hear movement and he sticks his head out of the vent. "There are two paths that head towards the general direction of F-Pod. I'll take one path today and the other tomorrow. Which one should I take today?"

Rec Room

Day 4, 11 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

Seeing as how breakfast was even worse than yesterday, Kasumi and I made our way to the Rec Room after Yukiko was finished eating. She fell into a little food coma after so she's peacefully sleeping on one of the bean bags across from Kasumi and I.

The two of us were sitting in a peaceful silence - peaceful until I noticed the sad look on Kasumi's face. She has her PDA in her hands and she's staring at it like it just told her it killed her puppy.

I nudge her lightly.

What's wrong? I sign at her when she looks up at me.

Kasumi shrugs and looks back down at her PDA. She's silent for a couple of minutes before, "I had a dream about my aunt and uncle last night." Kasumi says, her eyes turning glossy.

Her aunt and uncle? Then why is she staring at her PDA like that?

I lean over to see exactly what she's looking at. On her PDA she has the file of one of our peers pulled up, their picture displayed beside their information.

Oh.

...

...Oh.

You think…? my hands slow down, my mind still trying to catch up to what I think Kasumi is trying to say.

Day 4, 10 hours until access to A-Wing is regained

Takeshi and I turn our attention towards the ceiling when we hear odd clanking sounds. A second later, Ryu sticks his head out of the vent.

"Ryu." I smile in relief. He's not dead.

That means Takeshi's loophole theory was right.

Takeshi looks just as relieved as I feel. He starts climbing the ladder to help Ryu get out. "Did you find anything?" Takeshi asks. "A-Wing? F-Pod? A way out?"

Ryu shakes his head. "No. The entire path was silent - no sign of the girls or a way out. There were also several branches leading to other vents, I'm guessing." he sighs. "I'll have to check out the other path tomorrow."

Tomorrow.

Rec Room

Day 4, 10 hours until access to A-Wing is lost

I...see…

We can talk about it more tomorrow if you want. Then I can actually try and help you with my words. I sign.

Kasumi gives me a weak smile. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right." she nods, wiping unshed tears from her eyes. "Thank you…" she trails off, a smirk replacing her smile. "...baby raccoon."

This damn gremlin-

"Suga - ah, that's right, sorry. Sora? Kasumi?"

Kasumi and I turn our heads towards the entrance of the Rec Room.

Shun smiles, waving at us with less energy than usual. She's one of the ones who haven't been eating either. "Come on, Candace has a game for us all to play. It was going to be Yume's own version of telephone but seeing as how we're all barely able to think and two of us are barely able to speak…" Shun yawns.

Kasumi and I nod in understanding and stand up. I'm not too far gone because of the lack of food just yet - I'll be fine for a few more days.

I scoop Yukiko up in my arms and Kasumi and I follow Shun out of the Rec Room.

Tomorrow.

Kasumi and Yukiko look at me expectantly, excited looks on both of their faces.

Huh?

Kasumi screams and quickly throws herself in front of Yukiko, shielding her from looking at it any longer.
